Hotel review: DEXTRO Little Italy, BW premier collection hotel Location: San Diego, CA Rate: 550/2 nights Room: king room, bay view 6.0/10 This supposed premier Hotel in the heart of San Diego, 2.8 miles from Balboa Park and about 3 miles from San Diego International Airport (SAN) is not off to a great start. They have no airport shuttle service to or from the hotel which wouldn't be expected from a "standard" hotel. From a premier hotel, the transportation is supposed to be part of the service. The staff were quite nice, pleasant, and overall proficient. However, i found the restaurant pleasant and it's menu artful though the ambiance could definitely be better. The room, though, was inexcusable. From an antique-style heater/AC unit, to exposed wiring along the walls, a bathroom door with no sliding track along the bottom, peeling wallpaper, strange marks along the walls, and zero housekeeping service or room service; the hotel's ambition is there but they let the typical and conventional "low-quality" Best Western mentality influence their interior redesign which is severely lacking. This is not a premium hotel. This is an average hotel masquerading as premium. The exterior and the staff are the only consistent offerings.

My experience at this hotel was good but not great. Our room was 7/10 clean because it was dusty and when you turned on the ac there was a weird odor . Parking is $45 . It's right next to Italy and 20-25 min walk to downtown . It is a bit pricey compared to what you can get in other better hotels near the same price . Staff is friendly keep in mind I only stayed a day .

We had a nice stay at the Dextro. The rooms were clean and staff was friendly and helpful. We had called ahead for a crib and on arrival they brought it right up we got in later at night with our baby. We booked through my wife's credit card portal I think and we had breakfast included. Which was nice for a quick bite it is just normal hotel breakfast so definitely wouldn't pay for it if it wasn't included in our rate. I did have to work for half a day from the breakfast area and the two ladies staffing it were awesome bringing drinks and helping everyone out as they came down. Rooms are kinda awkward shaped and sized due to the shape of the hotel. No microwave in the room is whatever but they had none on the premise for use is a big miss for me. My wife enjoyed the pool one day but said it was a bit chilly. The best part about the hotel was the location. We were able to walk to it from the zoo and you're right by little Italy and walked down to the seaport area. Price was right as well. Would stay again if the rate is good because of location more than anything.

    Outside dextro at night

The dextro sufficed as a place to sleep for the night. Unfortunately, our television wasn't functional and neither was our phone. Maintenance did their best to try and fix it, but they advised that there was a problem with the system and it could not be resolved. I would only recommend this hotel if it was cheaper than others and you were not gonna stay long in your room. The staff was pleasant at check-in

Booked here for a work conference, and I'd say my stay was just okay. I appreciated the renovated feel of the rooms but there were a few cons that affected my experience. First off, the setup of the hotel is a bit strange, it is a tall cylindrical building, and the architecture of the building felt old. There is only valet parking (I think something like $30-50/day), but my work paid for it so I was happy to use it. The inside lobby is quite small due to the architecture, and the ceilings and hallways are shorter than usual. While the building felt old, I appreciated that the rooms looked renovated. There was also ongoing construction/renovation on each floor. I was not able to get restful sleep at all during my 2-night stay. There were a handful of things that contributed to this: uncomfortable pillows, street lights streaming in / curtains not blocking it out, running toilet noise through the night, thin walls where I heard my neighbor snoring. Thankfully the hotel had earplugs so it helped a little on my second night. But also on my second night, the keycard reader on my door stopped working so I had to go to the front desk a few times to figure it out. They had to call a maintenance person to replace the battery. Quite an inconvenience at the end of a long day. There were a few pros, which had brought my rating from 2-stars to 3: - we had a breakfast buffet for my work, and it was pretty good food (though we were promised lunch catering but they canceled on us) - we booked the conference room on the top floor which had a great panoramic view of San Diego - the location is a short walk to Little Italy! (beware of construction around) - rooms are renovated, as mentioned earlier, and clean and spacious - front desk people and valet people were super nice

The manager on site 3/20/26 was the best! He was so kind and helped us out. I didn't catch his name but he needs some recognition! Our Top of The Dextro King room was amazing. Room 1602 for reference. Only thing I wish is for them to update the shower, other than that it was absolutely amazing. Definitely coming back!

    Soaked mattresses.

The entire hotel is a circular, including the parking garage. Get your Dramamine handy. The moment we checked the sheets, we were terrified. We did get a room change, but as a hotel, renting a room like this is just beyond disgusting. Affordable and cheap if you're just staying a few nights. Would recommend to check the mattresses, or spend a few more bucks on cleaner places.

You can decorate the space however you want so it's very customizable. They also allow any outside vendors for food and drink which is a plus because I know some venues make you work their list of food vendors only. I found the staff very easy to work with. We communicated via email the weeks before our party and they answered any questions I had promptly. The only con I had this place was the parking situation. I toured this place in the late afternoon after work when things were nice and quiet, so I didn't think the parking was bad at that time. But on weekends at around noon, it gets really crazy. Factor in the weekend crowd and if there are any other events taking place in the area, it is a nightmare. Some of my family members weren't able to attend my event bc they spent 40+ minutes driving around. I would definitely recommend getting there early or ride sharing, or maybe hosting your event later in the afternoon to avoid the crowds. It was also pretty warm. They do have air conditioning, but since it's an indoor/outdoor space, it's hard to keep the cold air in. It's not the venue's fault for the hot and humid weather we have been experiencing though. Just something to be aware of. Overall, my party turned out great. I would recommend, but just really assess the parking situation.

A big disappointment for us was the morning of we still saw bird poop all over the deck. No one was responding to us, therefore we couldn't get anyone from the venue to clean it (I asked prior when touring the venue and was told it would be cleaned day of). As it got closer to set up time I had no choice but to ask my husbands groomsmen, my brothers, and our cousins to go buy mops and scrub the deck. Not to mention the venue coordinator for the day of didn't introduce herself until we were eating dinner during our reception, and never actually gave us her name. The package came with beautiful florals and centerpieces, and we were able to view a sample table set up that felt simple yet elegant *Food was included and notably served plated, which is typically an expensive upgrade at many other venues *Clean bathrooms with multiple stalls, which was surprisingly uncommon after touring so many venues *DJ and wedding planner services were already included *Photobooth upgrade was offered at a very reasonable price =CONS= *Very limited parking. We were grateful valet service was included for our larger guest count, but I would strongly recommend this upgrade if not already part of the package *No groom suite. There was a small bridal suite available, though it would feel cramped for anyone beyond just the bride *Limited greenery surrounding the ceremony area. Aside from some shrubbery, there was very little natural scenery and noticeable street noise nearby The pricing was extremely competitive and this likely would have been our choice had I not personally prioritized a venue with more natural surroundings. From both a financial and planning standpoint, this option removed a lot of the usual wedding stress because of how many services were already bundled together. On top of that, Oscar and his team stood out for being exceptionally organized and efficient during both the tour and quoting process.
