I've stayed at Abpópa Hillcrest a few times and love it more each visit. The rooms are striking--especially at night with glowing paper lanterns and floor-to-ceiling windows. TRAVELERS BEWARE We read the reviews before booking. They were mixed. I figured we were reasonable adults who could handle a quirky boutique hotel and decided to give it a shot. I was wrong in a way I am still processing. The guy who checked us in runs the cafe downstairs and is genuinely lovely. He is in no way responsible for what follows. Standing in that courtyard I thought okay, cute, this is going to be a thing. We were briefly charmed. We were catastrophically wrong. The room is worn. Scuffed walls, that particular feeling of a place that hasn't been looked after in a while. The bathroom is open to the room and the toilet is flushed by turning on the sink. I stood there absorbing that information for longer than I'd like to admit. Let me tell you something about this building. It is constructed around what felt like a shared utility core with every headboard in every room bolted directly into it. There are no real walls between units. Sound travels through this property like it is looking for someone. Whatever happens in any room happens in every room. This is not a quirk. This is a design failure and it is entirely the hotel's responsibility. I was sleeping soundly. Dead to the world. Then a push from my husband and I'm half awake, groggy, blinking at the ceiling. Then I hear it. A woman. Moaning. I lay there thinking okay, people have sex, we'll get through it. I close my eyes. Then the moaning builds into a full throated, wall shaking scream that I can only describe as the most theatrical climax I have ever been forced to witness as an unwilling audience of two. I think okay. It's over. I start to drift back off. It was not over. It happened again. And again. And again. Five separate climaxes over an hour and a half. None of it believable for a single second. This was not passion. This was a performance and not a particularly convincing one. At the very last one she started singing. With one of them. I have no follow up to that. I simply heard it and now I am telling you. My husband had been awake for twenty minutes before waking me up. He said I wouldn't have believed him if I hadn't heard it myself. He was right. Though at some point it absolutely would have woken me up on its own. When it was finally over we could hear people in other units rustling around in their beds. We were not the only ones. We drifted off around 3am. At sunrise the light poured straight through the windows and jolted us awake. Then the smoke alarm started beeping. Dead battery. That slow rhythmic beep arriving with the morning light like a message from God himself telling us to get the hell out. We grabbed our bags and went to the Marriott. read more

When we found this place online, the pictures make it look very new, spacious and clean. The pictures are deceptive by the angles they show. When we checked into our first room, there were dirty towels on the floor and dirty sheets laying on the chaise chair in the corner. We let the manager know and he apologized and told us it would be a little bit. He put us in a different room. We had trouble with the security code and had to call him again, he was able to fix that as well. They should mention that rooms may have a loft bed with very steep steps and are difficult to climb. They are not accessible for anyone with knee, back or physically handicap issues. In the loft, we could not stand up or sit up because there was only about 3 feet to the ceiling, if that. There could easily be a full sized bed in the downstairs as to avoid the climb. The walls had a lot of marks and scrapes and could definitely use a paint job to make it more presentable for guests. There was also a metal object hanging by a screw out of the wall. We don't know what that was for, but again, it's unbecoming for guests. The bathroom is extremely tight and has a foldable door that gives no privacy, which is very awkward for anyone in the room. The location was a plus because it was so convenient to everywhere we wanted to visit during our stay. Michael, the manager, was also very kind and you can tell he is trying his hardest to make it work and make people happy. There's a cute little cafe on the bottom floor and outdoor lobby. Everything is contactless with check in, checkout etc. I'm not always a fan of that. I like employees around. We liked the area. Found it to be safe any time of day or night walking around. read more

Very little good things to say about this place. I have stayed many many places and rarely have had problems but this is absolutely somewhere I would not return. The decor and finishing in the rooms just seemed cheap and rushed. Bathrooms, well there are plenty of reviews about the terribly small bathrooms, so I was prepared for that. But definitely worse in person. There was an odd small toilet/sink combo in my room, I had never seen one like this before and I definitely was not prepared to brush my teeth over a toilet like I had to do. The sink in this odd little invention got stuck with the water running nonstop and I could not turn it off, eventually it mysteriously stopped. So after that I was scared to use it, so began to brush my teeth in the sink in the little kitchenette area. Well, that drain was stopped up and fairly quickly filled with backed up grey water that would go nowhere. I had read the reviews about the homeless in the area so I was prepared for that. But again, worse than I expected as I found myself having to mentally prepare myself for hostility each time I left the room. There were many homeless wandering around Hillcrest but they congregate right around Abpopa in particular. Evidently management does not care to do anything about it, maybe they enjoy the company so just let them be. Leaving the hotel is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get. Was there going to be someone sitting on the corner smoking drugs, was there going to be someone yelling at you, or yelling at the voices in their head? Were they going to ask you for money? Only one way to find out. I had a billing issue and management was not helpful at all, even though they had verbally and through text acknowledged that I was due a credit. They were, in fact, extremely rude with me during the SEVERAL times I had to call to get this fixed. I've never been treated this poorly by an establishment I had given money to. I kept getting the run around and being told the credit had been issued and it never would come through until eventually they told me there was nothing they could do. I had to dispute with my credit card company and eventually received my money back. When I told a couple of locals where I was staying, they just laughed and reiterated what a dump it was. It's a shame there aren't many more places to stay in this immediate area other than in this dumpster fire. Next time I'll just get something a little down the road in Little Italy or one of those areas. read more

TLDR; cool in theory, mediocre in practice. I was very excited to stay at Abpopa. I lived in the area a few years ago, but I found that I never got to enjoy the Hillcrest neighborhood as much as I would have liked, so I figured staying in the area would be a nice treat. I was also drawn to the unique architecture and interior design pictured on the hotel's website. However, there were a few issues with the room that were difficult to ignore. While some may have been a matter of preference-- I didn't enjoy sheer blinds and the fact that I was on the third floor made it feel like I was in a fish tank-- many of the other issues-- the roll up blinds on the biggest window in the kitchen/bathroom area being completely missing-- were hard to ignore. Lastly, I'm not sure if this was an issue for other guests, but the building's guest WiFi did not show up on any of my devices. Unlike some other reviewers, I didn't mind the unconventional bathroom situation; I found as far as to say that it's a clever use of space, but definitely don't stay here if you're expecting a full sized situation. The linens used on the bed were high quality and quite nice, and the lofted bed area was fun and kitschy. I will say that, otherwise, the furniture feels dated. You can also see the wear and tear in the paint, rugs, and wallpaper in this particular unit if you take more than a cursory look. Ambient music from the cafe in the first floor can be at times heard from the third floor. All of these factors aside, the individual managing check in was very kind and responsive; I appreciated how he allowed me to store my luggage when I arrived early and allowed me to check in a few minutes before the scheduled time. In addition, I had the best açaí bowl of my life in the cafe downstairs-- a definite plus in my book. read more

I always go to 7-Eleven on fourth and Robinson. When I went through Airbnb, this place popped up quite a few times. I thought hell why not. To my surprise the building next to my favorite 7-11 was a hotel. For the most part, it seems to be a residential street. This place was secure and clean. The few times I stayed here. I got to check out different rooms. They were all loft styles. I really liked the design in the rooms. My only complaint is being the beds were high they had a ladder type of stairs. I stayed here for one Saturday night to attend a show about 10 minutes away at the Observatory. Apparently there was a convention going on that weekend and this hotel was the only one I could find available and reasonably priced in the area. I also found no mention of bed bugs, so that was definitely a plus. This place comes off like a giant Airbnb made by remodeling a warehouse that they are now they are passing off as a hotel. With that, there are pros and cons. What I liked: The location is great. There are a ton of great restaurants in walking distance and the cafe at the hotel "entrance" is one of them. Good food and nice people. As far as the room, I appreciated the amount of space, the clean linens, and the warm shower with good water pressure. I saw someone else had an issue with the water pressure, so I was dreading that, but it was great for me. I also appreciate that there's an empty fridge in the room as well as a microwave (though I didn't use them). I also really liked that the place is gated since there's no lobby. Again, it's also in a great location. Besides the walkable area, you can get to a ton of other places in a quick uber/lyft ride. What I didn't like: The "bathroom" is the worst. Like others mentioned, there's no privacy, so I'd never even want to share the room with someone I'm super close with. I stayed by myself, but the bathroom is so small, I would leave the "door" open. I'm a pretty averaged sized person, so the bathrooms could really use some work. I also wasn't a fan of the lack of blinds. Luckily I'm an early riser, but good luck napping during the day. I really don't understand why they just don't invest in decent blinds. The walls are also too thin. I could hear what sounded like a couple arguing next to me, and I was woken up around 2am by what sounded like a drunk person above me walking into their room and knocking things over. I also only spoke to one person associated with the hotel the entire time I was there - I believe she was just there to clean since she asked me what room I was checking out of. The lack of people didn't bother me a ton, but if you're looking for that touch of human presence, this is not the place to stay. So, long story short, I'd only stay here again if I absolutely had to. I would never go out of my way to stay here. If you're by yourself and you're not a light sleeper, this place might be perfect for you. Otherwise, I don't recommend for more than 1-2 nights, max. Side note: when leaving your room, the door doesn't automatically lock, which I'm not a fan of. You have to hit the * for it to lock from the outside, and deadbolt on the inside. Also, if you plan to do your makeup, i recommend bringing your own light up makeup mirror. read more

When you got into bed, you become a human taco. There's nowhere to hang clothes. There's nowhere to store clothes. The bathroom looks like something out of a cabin up by the lake two by fours showing when you flush the toilet water comes out so you wash your hands over the top of the tank. The only really good thing is the restaurant down on the bottom level gooseberries Café. I believe it's called the food. There was really fantastic. No one is really there, you enter with codes, you ride the elevator with codes, you get in your room with codes. Outside entry is unlit, at night, a risk. It's next door, or a door up, to a place like a 7/11, full of junkies, folks sprawled on the sidewalk, or standing about, you walk past this, to the dark gate and enter an entry code (suggest you do it quickly!) I would rate it, high risk at night and I'm a big guy. They should at least have a motion light. I had to use my phone to reference the gate code, when there is a gate code, an elevator code, a room code, you don't have hem all memorized, so there you are, at the entrance, with your expensive phone lit, check the cote to punch in. The room seemed like it might be cleaned weekly. The sink is part of the toilet tank. You straddle the toilet bowel, to wash your hands, face. The view, is not like the photos. I rented the better room " "Premier Studio, City View"and my windows looked into a CLOSE adjoining property, I to keep the shades down. I had prepaid my room through Expedia $368.54, for two nights. I have my credit card set, to immediately notify me of a charge. After I checked out, a charge of $801. popped up on my Visa, it took several calls to get them to acknowledge the error/charge. Then a few more to reaffirm it wasn't put on my card. it, by no means, looked like the one in the photo, if there is one like that, it's a bet you'll get it, even though you are paying more, my room was quite small. There is free street parking in the neighborhood, a block away, glad I didn't pay the parking fee (2 hours parking after 10AM, so, just get to your car by noon ;) read more

Quirky ( in a good way) hotel with super friendly staff. I called staff several times about minor things and they responded immediately. Located in the Hillcrest neighborhood with all kinds of restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, bars, bagels and cute stores all within a short walk. The hotel has public spaces with-tables and chairs downstairs so you can relax and watch people stroll by. My room had 4 large windows which made my room feel more spacious. Yes the bathroom is weird, you brush your teeth in the kitchen sink, carpet not that clean. BUT super comfortable bed and plush towels.the TV was also tired and hard to program. My new favorite place to stay in San Diego. A staff that is on site and responsive is always a big plus. read more

Not sure I would ever stay there again. Maybe. I literally just checked out this morning. Here are the good and the bad. The good... Location was close to everything in Hillcrest. The fact that there was parking was a huge plus. The bed, although was just a queen size was quite comfortable and being in the penthouse top floor room it was enormous. Way more space than we ever could use or need , and the room practically 360° views of San Diego, which were pretty amazing. Also, the person I communicated with via texting was attentive and polite. I also liked that you can enter the building as well as the elevator and apartment all with a code, so there was no need for a physical key. Love that. The day we got there, the drapes were not connected to the police system, and I alerted the person via text about it and the next day someone came and fixed it. So that was nice. But here's the bad... The entire apartment, which was very long and narrow, is completely surrounded by windows. Other than a couple of very thin, white blinds and one set of curtains near the bed that were also white, you would wake up to the bright sunshine as soon as the sun rises each morning. There was no escaping the sun light unless you had an eye mask. The tiny shower had absolutely horrible water pressure even though it had a huge rain head. The bathroom had no shelving or anywhere to put anything really except for just on the sink itself. The toilet room was right next to it and has a sliding door that sticks and basically locks you in. This happened to me twice where I was getting very nervous that I was not gonna be able to get out of the toilet room without breaking the door. Luckily each time, after a few minutes, I was able to open the door. There was a kitchen, however the microwave is enormous and Italian and doesn't have any of the standard or numbers or dials of any normal American microwave. We could not figure out how to use it until we found a booklet in one of the drawers that deciphered the images on the dial. Even then we really didn't get it to work. There were no paper towels or hand towels in the kitchen at all. The kitchen sink faucet is literally loose and falling apart. Many of the windows are actually sliding windows that let air in all around them. So you can hear all the noises and feel air coming through them very easily. And as I mentioned before, the majority of them have no blinds on them. They offered no extra towels, so we ended up having to go to a store to buy beach towels when we went to the beach. Oddly enough, the one area that they had drapes was in the very narrow far section of the apartment near the bed area and bathroom. They had the white drapes next to the bed that allowed light and heat through, which made taking an afternoon nap very difficult and uncomfortable. But by the bathroom area, they had black curtains. That did a much better job at blocking the light. Seems as though those curtains should be reversed. Also, the bed area is fully exposed to the rest of the apartment. It would really be nice if they had some kind of inside curtain to separate the bed for privacy and at the very least light. Also, with three shear enormity of the space, why would they only offer one queen bed. Really should be a king. We were on the top floor so we didn't have any issues like I've read on some other reviews with hearing other guests in their rooms. But we were woken up multiple times by people screaming on the streets or sirens because as I mentioned the windows don't actually fully close. They basically just hang in front of the opening with a space around them directly to the outside. The apartment seems like it's an event space or some thing because behind the TV were stacks of folding chairs and in some of the closets there were loads of coffee cups and glasses. So that was a bit odd. Overall, of all the bad parts mentioned, the biggest complaint was the sunlight. I could deal with almost all the other stuff, but the sunlight was the biggest problem with napping during the day or sleeping past 6 AM in the morning. We go to Hillcrest to go out at night and party and get home late and then to have to be woken up by the brightness is really uncomfortable. And I guess the other most challenging issue was the incredibly poor water pressure in the shower. So as I mentioned way up at the beginning of this review, I may consider staying again if I really needed to be close to Hillcrest, but probably not. I might consider just staying in a hotel further away and just Uber it over. read more

My wife and I stayed here about a year ago and honestly this place is dreadful. It is 100% style over substance. The "hotel" such as it is is a bizarre and unwelcoming mish-mash of poorly executed design cues standing on top of incredibly cheap execution. There is no front desk. There is no front DOOR. There's a gated courtyard that you can't enter until you text the "concierge" that you've arrived, assuming you can even find the unmarked entrance. Once "inside" there's an elevator from the open air courtyard that takes you to your floor. Your "room" closely resembles a walk in closet with a bed and bathroom shoved into it. A cheap bed, and cheaper bathroom. There is no turndown service, there is no housekeeping, there is no restaurant, there's not even a lobby. Every fixture and appliance in the "hotel" looks like a cast off from the loading dock of an IKEA. Everything is cheap, featureless and only minimally functional. It's honestly hard to go into any further detail because there's essentially nothing here. There's no staff. There are no phones. No bar. Nothing. This place is a joke, a laughable attempt at something modern and sleek. Instead it feels like something dated and pointless. Go to a motel 6 instead. At least then you'll be greeted by a human being standing in an actual lobby. read more

I found this "condo" loft/hotel via an online booking service and it was such a surprise. It's an amazing architectural gem in the middle of a residential area in the fun and hip Hillcrest district. The location is ideal and there's even a 7-Eleven right next-door! There are tons of restaurants near by as well. It's a very walkable and fun neighborhood. They do charge $25 for parking but I managed to find parking right in front at a metered spot which is free at night. I believe that if you can find a spot in the surrounding areas you can park overnight for free but I would check beforehand to make sure. Once you book they text you a code for the gate and the elevator and also a code for your room. The rooms are really fun and different and I felt like I was in Europe at a design hotel in Holland or Scandinavia. It's all a bit industrial, with some rooms having fun quirks like plaid carpeting, red Chinese papered walls and upstairs sleeping lofts. There's a cute vintage looking microwave in the room and a full kitchenette. There's a coffee maker with coffee provided, toiletries, soap, and a hairdryer. The shower was great. Plenty of clean towels. My room had a nice view of the surrounding streets and while some of the neighbors in the nearby buildings could definitely look in, it was easy to cover the large windows with the shades. My comfortable bed with sparking clean sheets was upstairs in the loft in a nook and you took a little ladder to get to it. I don't know if this will be the best place for people with mobility issues. However I fully enjoyed it and it's just a close walk to all the fun shops and nightclubs, bars, and restaurants in the area. A lot more fun than staying at a commercial hotel in the gaslight district which is what I've done before. Check out at 11am is done via a guest book in the lobby area. I would definitely stay here again. I'd love to check out the different style rooms as they have several different types of studios. And there's also a great gift shop downstairs with vintage clothing, vinyl records and other neat stuff. read more

I had a poor experience here but I want to start with the positives. The staff were friendly and helpful to me during my stay. The views from the room were nice and the hotel uses security codes instead of cards for the main gate, the elevator and the rooms. This hotel has some serious issues. There is no privacy and the walls are way too thin. Just about everything is about style and lacking in substance. The bathroom did not offer any privacy, you can see, hear, and smell everything. Its a very uncomfortable experience if you are not staying by yourself. The bathroom sink is too small to even wash your hands in. I don't know who could have thought the bathrooms were a good design choice but they somehow got built anyway. You can't get a good nights sleep here. The walls are paper thin and I could hear everything in the neighboring rooms. Someone had their tv on all night until after 7am which I could hear with clarity. The only mirror in the place was this small rectangle installed above the kitchen sink. If you're tall or want to check more than just your face and hair you are going to struggle. And for some reason the TV faces the sink instead of the bed or couch. The hotel was also dirty. There were scuff marks along the wall from the door all the way to the foot of the bed. There were stains in the carpet underneath the bed and a bit of rust in the shower. read more

The room looked dirty. The curtain pull was broken. The carpeting was a grey white vs white. There was chipped paint on many of the walls. There was rust and gunk in the window sills and the windows needed to be cleaned. There was some black stuff by the shower: mold? The lamp by the bed was broken. The one plus is that the linens were crisp and clean as were the towels. The mattress needs to be replaced. The check-in process is via text. The female on call was rude and did not provide the best customer service. One major plus is the KAFE at the hotel. It is not affiliated with the hotel, AND the food is fantastic, with some unique items. Everything is fresh and the presentation of the food is gorgeous. Excellent customer service. read more

Planned a trip to SD from LA to visit dear friends. My Mother is ill and I am moving back to Dallas. I booked for the 7th and as it happens, my mother condition has worsened so I have to fly to Dallas on the 7th! Did they fully refund me like every other hotel would within a proper notice of cancellation? NO!! The charged me half of my booking which is insane! DO YOURSELF A SOLID AND BOOK ANTOHER HOTEL!!! They took HALF of a reservation that was properly cancelled. SHAME ON THEM!! I will be reporting them to the Better Business Bureau! read more

Horrible place customer service was the worst they treat people horrible, they try to charger me double a deposit just because I exited my stay and they never return my first deposit. This is horrible, well in fact I had a buddy stay there and ask about extended his room and they told him if he extended that they wouldn't charge a double deposit because that is ridiculous. From what I understand and what is confirmed in their website they charge you the room fee and a returnable $200 deposit. But if you decided to make another reservation and or extend, because there no other way to extend without making another reservation they try to charge you another deposit which is crazy! read more

Bona fide hotels in Hillcrest are hard to come by, so we took a chance on Abpopa. The concept is interesting and if better executed would make the hotel my go-to for visits to SD. I love this place and the owners! I had an issue with Expedia (don't ever use them, their customer service is garbage). BUT the owners here saved the day! They went above and beyond to get me the refund. They could have easily passed it off as a Expedia issue. The front desk is this really cool record store and I hear a wine bar is going in in the courtyard. I actually live in San Diego and can tell you if you're visiting, this is an ideal location as there's so much to walk to. Thank you Paul and wife! Good luck with your adventure in this business. I was looking for a room for one night for my spouse and I, our 20 something daughter and 18 y/o nephew. I was intrigued by the concept and happy to find something with one queen and two twins. I'm adventurous so LET'S GO! Overall, we were disappointed and would not return. On a positive note: -The gentlemen who responded to emails and phone calls was very nice, accommodating and understanding. -The security was good, with codes for all entries, including a separate code, in lieu of a key, for your room. -The neighborhood was fine. There was a bar right next door, but it was quiet and did not cause any problems. There is an Einstein Bagels right across the street, which was a nice choice for a quick breakfast. On the other hand: -Upon arrival, our room code did not work. I called for help and they ended up bringing us a key. (so much for the room code) -The room was the size expected, but appeared unfinished. The upper walls around the loft beds, the floors of the lofts and the ladders to get up to the loft beds, were unpainted/unfinished plywood and 2 x 4's. -The bathroom door had no latch and could be seen into from anywhere in the room. -There is a gap at the top of the bathroom wall that is on the ladder up to the queen loft. You can easily see into the bathroom directly into the shower and toilet. You could stick your entire head through it. -There was a hot water pot with a small cup holding instant coffee, tea bags and a couple of sugars and artificial sweeteners. Ugh, instant coffee. -There was provided a small soap, one bottle each of shampoo, conditioner, body lotion and shower gel. (Room for 4 guests). -There were two bath towels, two hand towels and two wash cloths (Room for 4 guests). My daughter asked how much we paid for this room and then reminded me that she had stayed locally for less with a standard, good hotel. Well, it was worth a shot. This is one of those reviews that you don't want to write but that you feel obligated to because the experience was that bad. I wanted to like this place because of the location and the design but it turned out to be one of the worst hotel experiences I have ever had. To start the construction is so poor that the walls are paper thin and you can hear everything - it is LOUD. The rooms are mostly IKEA furniture and already starting to wear. The room was dirty with scuffs on the wall, patches of paint missing, dirty carpets, etc. The design of the bathrooms have the bathroom sink as part of toilet so that you can only get sink water if you flush the toilet. You have to shave and brush your teeth in the kitchen sink virtually in the dark with no lighting. There are no actual walls on the toilet, only some closet doors that have been hinged together with giant gaps which offer no privacy at all if you're sharing the room with another guest. The heater/AC wall units was very loud and leaking all over the floor (saw the previous guests and mentioned this also and it was not fixed). The sheets were dirty and the windows were filthy. The lights in the public corridors were out and there's no heating system in them either. One night when there was a party that went on for hours until 5am. Every other word was "bro" and "dude" and "check my insta followers". When Paul in management came up to try and break up the party and left the room I overheard the guy say "it's OK man I know the guy personally". Paul did acknowledge and apologize for all this but I would have to say unless you're looking for a nightmare in a frat house this is one hotel to definitely AVOID. read more

Stayed here Thursday-Saturday during the end of April. While the location is terrific and architecture interesting, the design and appliances of the loft proved not well thought-out and problematic. Pros: -Location. This is pretty much the ultimate in inner--city living. Anything you could readily envision is available within 2-5 blocks. -Every exterior door and elevator is accessible through a personalized code that's sent through email/text the day you check in. Super convenient! -Personnel on-site were cordial and pleasant to interact with when I needed assistance at checkin. Cons: -The layout of the unit doesn't lend itself to being quiet. If you have the loft room, your head, resting on your pillow, puts you ~4 feet from the ceiling. This wouldn't normally be an issue but the ceiling is directly under the hallway of the floor above. If there's lots of foot traffic it will be difficult to sleep and you may be awoken at odd hours if those above you are particularly rambunctious. The layout of the bathroom, which others have noted here, renders the space not very private. Not the best option if you're traveling with someone you're not intimately familiar with. -The TV was of such poor quality to the point it's inoperable. Just give me a two-button remote! -The internet, while solid for the first few days, became impossible to stay connected to on Friday afternoon and evening . Just a note if you plan on working remotely from this space. -This particular location seems to be experiencing aggressive homeless, specifically at the 7/11 which this location neighbors. It's really unfortunate to see this and I hope the property managers can come to some solution. Not really a "con", and it didn't bother me, but I could see this definitely being an issue for some visitors. read more
