All diamond virgins have to attend Guy's Diamond 101 class. This is where he sits you in one of his offices, teaches all the C's, and the leaves you to inspect and learn through practice. There are a lot of skanky jewelers out there, this will at least help you see through their scams. When the search for your perfect gemstone begins, you get to tap into Guy's expertise and his network of dealers to find the right stone with the right price. I had a great time working with all Guy and his personable staff. He helped me design a custom engagement ring based on my pictures and sketches and made sure everything met my exact specifications. Of course I love my ring, but unlike many women, I wanted absolutely no part in designing or picking out what kind of ring I wanted; I didn't even necessarily insist on a diamond. I trusted my guy implicitly to select the perfect ring for me, and more importantly, I wanted to be surprised. And with the help of Charles (Charlie), he did just that. My fiancé knew from the start that he wanted a ruby as the main stone (to go with my red hair!) and there just aren't a lot of ruby engagement rings to be had. He went to Jeweler's Mall on S. Wabash Avenue (or as my mom calls it, "The Den of Forty Thieves") and asked around as to where he might be able to purchase such a ring. He was directed to Charles Horberg. As soon as he met Charles, he knew he was in the right place to make such an important purchase. Together, they chose the perfect stone and setting, which involved transferring a stone from one ring to a setting from another, until my fiancé was happy with the finished product. I couldn't have been happier with my ring, but the band was quite large and needed to be re-sized. Fortunately I work close by and was able to take it in immediately. When I walked in, I immediately loved Charlie (for some reason I naturally gravitate towards aging Jewish men who remind me of my grampa), and when Charlie told me the reason my fiancé selected a ruby (http://jewishmag.com/67mag/aishetchail/aishetchail.htm), my heart melted. When my correct size was determined, Charlie asked when I wanted my ring back. Duh, I wanted it back as soon as possible! Normally these things take some time (usually a week), but Charlie was able to turn it around in twenty-four hours. That was much appreciated. My grampa used to be a jeweler in the same building many, many years ago, and since Charlie has been in the same building for fifty years, I thought I'd ask if he knew him. Turns out my grampa's store was only one floor up. And then Charlie showed me a picture of a jeweler's banquet reception taken in 1957 to see if I could find my grampa in it. Since the picture was grainy (not to mention I couldn't really distinguish the men from one another), I couldn't find him, but I was so touched that he still had the picture. Charlie loves what he does and seems to have no plans to retire. He always sees people at their best (well, jewelry purchases tend to be reserved for happy occasions!) and enjoys making people feel good. I admit I was lazy and did not bother to look at some of these old reviews but in retrospect I wish I would have because the negative ones are accurate to a T. Let me start by saying we are in a pandemic, so why would you, as a business owner, tell me within 5 minutes of meeting me that you are so excited you just got back from your Caribbean vacation where NO ONE WAS WEARING MASKS? Why does that seem like it's an appropriate thing to come out of your mouth whatsoever? And laughing as if we are just making normal conversation. Another thing, why would you assume I live in the neighboring town when you are guessing my address to put in your computer--when we are smack dab in the middle of Hinsdale--a little bit of snobbery I sense there? Oh well. This lady (CJ--the wife/owner) seems to have zero filter and just kind of holds you hostage talking about whatever stream of conscious garbage comes out of her mouth. Again, another flag I should have minded, but unfortunately didn't. Anyway, long, long story short. The communication style of the store owners is terrible, they have no sense of ownership for possibly making a mistake on their end, and they seem like they could care less about return business. Thankfully there's like a zillion other jewelry stores in the area to go to in the future. Stay away from this one if you value your time, energy, sanity and money.

BUYERS BEWARE!!! We were sold a ring that was advertised and invoiced as 14K gold with diamond…read moreaccents. We were actually sold a gold plated ring with cubic zirconia! We would not have even known until our daughter's finger changed color. We had the ring appraised and inspected by another jeweler and appraiser. We took the ring back to the owners of Caffray, who claimed it was mismarked and that they had no idea! Yet they admitted to using gold plated material to size the ring, when I showed them the different metal color. Dave said of course he uses gold plate on a gold plate ring. I showed him my receipt where he personally typed 14K gold with diamond accents and charged me the price of 14k gold with diamond accents!! I'm sure when they bought the merchandise for resale purposes, they inspected it thoroughly and knew what they had! This is fraudulent! I would not trust this business! They also are going out of business and advertising big "going out of business sales" now! It makes me really wonder why now!

There are moments in life when you realize you have made a terrible and costly mistake. I never…read morethought this would happen to me, but here I am. Every time I think about my experience in custom designing a ring at this place and the ring that was delivered to me, almost $2,000 later, my stomach turns. We purchased a setting and (2) 4mm diamonds from them. We don't know the actual quality of the diamonds individually because they just gave us a generalized estimate/average of the two. I went into Love & Promise Jewelers with so much hope and trust. We had consultations with many other jewelers and ultimately decided on Love & Promise as the place to custom make my dream engagement ring. We paid $150 in addition to the cost of the custom made ring ($1825 total), for a VIP Custom Rush so we would receive our engagement ring before our 3 year anniversary. Putting the ring on my finger after a month of stress, sleepless nights, hours on the phone and emails with them, and two trips to Chicago, was heartbreaking. Our 3 year anniversary, which I had been looking forward to for so long, was one of the worst days of my life. All my fears and concerns that I raised with them during the design process, although they assured me it would be fine, became a reality. In addition to the overall design, the height and width of the brackets on the two side stones are uneven. Visually, I could see this right away up close, in addition to blurry photos they sent me. I could see the error and Laura assured me "the ring looks beautifully straight." I confirmed with another jeweler what I was seeing was indeed correct. The jeweler asked if I noticed that multiple prongs on the side are not actually touching the diamonds. I could easily slip my finger nail under the prongs. Besides their error in never listening to any of my concerns with the design, the ring is blatantly flawed in quality. A week into the process, I realized that this was a huge error on my part. I should've ended the process there. I raised my concerns multiple times with 3 people at Love & Promise...they all reassured me that my custom ring was going to be great. I based it off the design "Gloria" but wanted to make it my own. Ten seconds into trying on my ring, I took it off, crying. That was the first and last time I put the ring on my finger. We have worked with multiple jewelers over the past few years in preparation for the wedding, and in all honesty, they are the first business who refuses to accept responsibility for their shortcomings and will only consider fixing their mistakes at an additional charge. This is not a mark of a business with integrity. Spend your money wisely and invest in a business who you trust will be there for you if problems arise. I could have put $1,825 towards a payment on a car, 3 months rent, or our wedding, but instead I chose to purchase a ring with Love & Promise. Love & Promise is very clever with words, responses, and they were attempting to make it right but ultimately I could not trust people who wanted to take the easy way out in the beginning and not address my concerns. They wanted over two hundred dollar in addition to everything I've already paid, to fix the angle of the side brackets and the clear evidence of poor quality workmanship. The angle of the side brackets was the #1 concern I raised after seeing the CAD, they reassured me and told me it would look bad if I went through with the changes. I had read all the reviews before starting this process and even in the bad ones, it seems like Love & Promise was sincere and the customer did something wrong which resulted in the customers issue. Whatever they reply to this review I want to be the first one to say, yes, I did do something terribly wrong. My fiance put all his trust in me, as I did with Love & Promise, and I immensely regret designing a ring with them. There's two key pieces of advice I will leave anyone reading this...trust your gut and look at their business on the BBB website. This is the second claim that has been filed against them. UPDATE: I'm adding an email sent to BreAnne addressing my concerns with the CAD. The email includes THREE examples. I'm not sure why Shirley is so hung up on the jeweler Vrai, it was one of the many examples all showing a 3 stone ring. Photoshoot? I'm sure you meant our once in a lifetime engagement pictures that I won't have a ring to wear in. I never said I wanted a redesign for free on the phone; Julie flat out told me the redesign would be $220 to fix the ring. Julie also might remember I told her the jeweler said the ring was well made for it being hand made. I went back to the jeweler and he noticed all the flaws and even took pictures to show other jewelers. Shirley said I exhausted over 7 hours...yes, I spent a significant amount on the phone asking them to fix ONE thing about the ring. Custom design rings allow up to 5 changes, they wouldn't allow 1.

We were just thankful to have the rings in our hands, as we thought we'd have to have Visa get our money back. Avoid this place. Update: we just had our rings appraised by another jeweler for insurance purposes. Now we know why Peter evaded our requests that he give us written appraisals. They are worth hundreds less than we paid. I hope you read this before doing business with Peter Malnekoff so you don't get taken advantage of like we did!
