Wow. I had what I can only describe as the worst customer service experience you could possibly have at a jewelry store of all places. I admit I was lazy and did not bother to look at some of these old reviews but in retrospect I wish I would have because the negative ones are accurate to a T. Let me start by saying we are in a pandemic, so why would you, as a business owner, tell me within 5 minutes of meeting me that you are so excited you just got back from your Caribbean vacation where NO ONE WAS WEARING MASKS? Why does that seem like it's an appropriate thing to come out of your mouth whatsoever? And laughing as if we are just making normal conversation. Another thing, why would you assume I live in the neighboring town when you are guessing my address to put in your computer--when we are smack dab in the middle of Hinsdale--a little bit of snobbery I sense there? Oh well. This lady (CJ--the wife/owner) seems to have zero filter and just kind of holds you hostage talking about whatever stream of conscious garbage comes out of her mouth. Again, another flag I should have minded, but unfortunately didn't. Anyway, long, long story short. The communication style of the store owners is terrible, they have no sense of ownership for possibly making a mistake on their end, and they seem like they could care less about return business. BUYERS BEWARE!!! We were sold a ring that was advertised and invoiced as 14K gold with diamond accents. We were actually sold a gold plated ring with cubic zirconia! We would not have even known until our daughter's finger changed color. We had the ring appraised and inspected by another jeweler and appraiser. We took the ring back to the owners of Caffray, who claimed it was mismarked and that they had no idea! Yet they admitted to using gold plated material to size the ring, when I showed them the different metal color. Dave said of course he uses gold plate on a gold plate ring. I showed him my receipt where he personally typed 14K gold with diamond accents and charged me the price of 14k gold with diamond accents!! I'm sure when they bought the merchandise for resale purposes, they inspected it thoroughly and knew what they had! This is fraudulent! I would not trust this business! They also are going out of business and advertising big "going out of business sales" now! It makes me really wonder why now! read more

I bought my wedding band from Caffray Jewelers a couple years ago after having a wonderful experience at the Hinsdale Wedding Walk. CJ was so nice and helpful that I couldn't wait to work with her on my ring. I bought a beveled band with very small diamonds around the entire band and was ecstatic to wear it on my wedding day. The day of my wedding one of the diamonds popped out. When I returned from my honeymoon very upset, CJ replaced the diamond and told me it was because of all the activities I did in Hawaii. Less than a week later another diamond popped out while I was sitting at my desk at work (NOT doing activities in Hawaii). She replaced the diamond and told me the band was thin and this could happen. After the THIRD TIME the diamond popped out, she told me I should have her cut the ring in half, and make two rings, so that when I hit my ring on a table (normal wear 'n tear) the diamonds wouldn't be effected on the palm side of my hand. I paid $300 for her to do this. Within a week another diamond popped out. I went in and told her I wanted a new ring because this was ridiculous. She told me that was fine, and I picked a new ring. I asked her to melt down my original band so I could keep a metal version of my original wedding band (sentimental a bit), and she told me it would cost me an additional $50. The fact that I had to return 4 times and drive in from the city each time, and then spend extra money for their poor quality rings was enough to make me still angry a couple years later (enough to write this review, which I should have done earlier). Definitely go somewhere else for a wedding band that you will wear on a daily basis. read more

First the back ground story. My mom purchased a 5 caret Aquamaster watch for my 40th birthday 9 years ago. Since then, my watch had need to repairs and only needed a battery replaced a few years ago. Since then, my mother has passed away and my watch means more to me today then when I first received it. Somehow I scratched the crystal and over the years it became foggy. I called Caffray and spoke to Dave and asked how much a new crystal would cost and the price of a new leather/alligator band. He quoted me " $60. to $80. for the crystal (depending on the side) and $25. for a band". I live an hour from their store, but felt it was important to return to where my Mom purchased the watch from and have it renewed to it's glamour!. I brought in the watch May 7th. I was looking for a dark purple/eggplant color band in honor of my mom. Both Dave and CJ looked through their bands and nothing was close. CJ took my cell and said she would call the manufacture and get back to me. She never called. After a week, I called to check the status of the repairs. Dave told me they were "waiting on the crystal" and "would call when it was in". (In the mean time we went out of town and I had no watch). Week two, I call again for status; CJ answered the phone and said they were "swamped with customer's" and she "would have to call me back". A few hours went by, and no call. I called a second time (same day) and again, was told her "the store was four deep with customer's" and again she "would have to call me back". I told her "I was a customer too", and she had to reply. A few more days went by, again I called and got the their recorded phone message (during working hours). I left a message for a return call, looking for the status of my watch repair/band over two weeks. When CJ finally called and said your watch is ready, no mention of total price was given (and at that point I did not think anything about since I was already quoted one from Dave). I had a very special request to have a bracelet designed to be worn as my "something blue" for my wedding day. It was very sentimental because the beads I had provided were made from the flowers at my brothers funeral services. I didn't have any ideas or designs in mind and trusted Cathy to create something beautiful, and that is exactly what she did! They also had some great ideas and ways to add the beads to my charm bracelet. I went here a few days ago to ask about the cost of cleaning my ring- polishing it, dismantling the stone (whatever the verbiage is) in order to completely clean all of it. When I spoke with the woman I started out with saying, "I have no idea when the last time I got this cleaned, but I'm wondering how much it would be?" As I handed her my ring, and before I could continue she looked at it and, with a shocked expression on her face, asked when the last time I had it cleaned was. I said I wasn't sure but what would the cost be? She said, "well we are just going to steam it." As she continued to look at it, while mentioned multiple times how dirty it was, she saw there was a chip in the stone and asked me multiple times when that happened and what could I have been doing that I chipped the stone. I felt embarrassed as there were other customers in the store, and she spoke to me as if maintaining my jewelry should be a priority. Sorry I work two jobs, both with children so my hands are always in and out of soap and constantly playing and cleaning and shelving stacks of books, and I don't set aside time to have my ring cleaned on a regular basis. I have also been planning on replacing the stone and the setting on of these days with a diamond from my great grandmother, so I haven't taken much notice of the stone anyway. While it was fairly clean after she steamed it, any jewelry store would have done the same thing with the same results. However, her interactions with me will keep me from returning. Had it been a more positive experience, I would looked into them doing the work on the ring, but I won't be doing that. They missed out on money that day from her being more concentrated on my imperfect ring than with speaking to me about what I wanted done, and possible money in the future with changing the stone and setting. read more

I was doing some comparison shopping for some custom made earring jackets for my wife's push present. I visited two other jewelers in Hinsdale before walking into Caffray's. I wish I had just gone here first although I think my experience at the other two store made me appreciate the service at Caffray's even more. This husband and wife owned store is everything you want from a small town business. Great service, honest answers, sensible prices. They took all the right steps to make sure the earring jackets were exactly what I wanted and would fit my wife's diamond studs perfectly. My mom had an heirloom ring repaired and sized for me and I was so impressed with how nice it was that she wanted to take me in to meet the jeweler. Cathy greeted us right away and was so enthusiastic and excited to show us her designs. The jewelry is beautiful and she creates pieces that are all different and unique. Some of the jewelry is more traditional and others are very artistic and creative so I think that anyone could find a piece they would be happy with; I especially love her pieces designed with raw gemstones. What can I say about Caffray Jewelers but wow. They really know their stuff. When it was time for me to pick out "the ring" for my at the time girlfriend, I went to go see Cathy and Dave. Words can't even explain how happy I was with the finished product. Their ability to walk me through the extremely complicated and confusing process of picking out an engagement ring was flawless. I live in town and have stopped by this jeweler from time to time over the years. I believe the same really nice, married couple have owned and managed this place as long as I have been around--18 years. They are next door to Walgreens in Grant Square. Although I have never given them any substantial business, they are always happy to complementary fix my daughter's broken necklace link, show me watches I would put on a Christmas list, and do just about whatever to satisfy a client.
