Classic small town charm with some fantastic cooks. First visit for breakfast. Home fried potatoes. Best I've had in 10 years and hundreds of breakfasts. Order them. Side pane cake came out hot and fluffy. The batter was so enticing I shared it with my friend. Had too. Only polite thing to do. Renegade Benedict. Was asked how I wanted my egg, the waiter countered my poached with over easy. I accepted. Gravy was fantastic. The sausage gravy was on top of another whole sausage patty. Dare I say sausage on sausage was too much. Biscuit- fluffy and firm. Will be back for a lunchtime or two. Many of the items are home made.

This is their Hibachi chicken with Hibachi vegetables and rice. They have homemade yum yum sauce too !!

If you want good diner food from a good "diner," The Diner in downtown Smithfield, NC, is the place to go. After 18 years at it, they've got it down to a smooth running family-run machine. I sat at the counter right where all of the food comes out of the kitchen and watched one masterpiece after another flow from the grill. The workers seem to never slow down as they all seem to help each other keep the smiles on customer's faces. A rare find in a fast-food world!

I really wanted to like this place as I enjoy diners. The service was friendly. You can seat yourself and someone brings you a menu and takes your drink order. The prices are reasonable too. I went with the french toast with bacon. The bacon was amazing and really crispy but the french toast was soggy. I've not had soggy french toast before so wasn't sure if it was cooked long enough. It was hot. I'm not sure if they used too much milk or the wrong type of bread. I think I should have ordered eggs and bacon.

It's been a minute, but back again for breakfast. Yummy tenderloin and gravy sandwich, home fries are always hot, fresh, seasoned. Unsweetened, fresh brewed iced tea. Yum. Fried egg, tenderloin for my guy, home fries, bisquit. Can you tell we're breakfast people? Why cook at home when you can get this great fare for a great price, support local! Wish we didn't have to drive to Smithfield for it, but we eat here when in town. Lunch specials on a whiteboard, sodas, Pepsi products, served in can. Today, busy, even a number of NC Highway Patrol dining in. Only a few tables empty, bar full of patrons as well. Glad to see business is booming. Try this place, you won't be disappointed. Open for breakfast/lunch.

Abigail loved her food and told me to give The Diner a 5 star review! And I totally agree with her!

Stopped for Lunch on away to a movie at the Howell Theater and to my amazement the service and food was excellent! It was a great find and will definitely be back and let everyone know of my find today!!

A real local dinner with excellent food. We were to late for breakfast, so opted for some lunch items. I enjoyed a nice juicy cheeseburger and my friend sampled the BLT. They have daily specials and homemade desserts. This is a place where the locals hangout and they do quite a brisk carry out service. Next time, I want to have the breakfast.

Great locally owned establishment where the owner cooks and wife serves. Daily special such as meatloaf on Monday's.

Four-Star Review - Metro Diner…read more Metro Diner offers an impressive variety of menu choices that make it easy for almost anyone to find something they will enjoy. From the moment the meal began, it was clear the restaurant focuses on hearty portions, classic comfort flavors, and a welcoming dining experience. The appetizers were a strong start. They were served hot, fresh, and well prepared. Each item had a satisfying texture and balanced seasoning. The presentation was simple yet appealing, and the portions were generous enough to share. These starters set a positive tone for the rest of the meal and showed consistency in kitchen execution. Moving into the main entrées, the variety truly stood out. The menu offers a wide range of comfort favorites, breakfast options, and traditional diner classics. Every entrée ordered at the table was flavorful, filling, and cooked as expected. The ingredients tasted fresh, and the meals were served in portions that reflected good value. From savory dishes to more traditional homestyle selections, there was a sense of care in preparation and attention to taste. Another positive aspect was the overall atmosphere. Metro Diner has a relaxed and comfortable setting that makes it suitable for families, friends, or casual business meetings. Service was attentive and friendly, helping create a smooth dining experience from start to finish. Overall, Metro Diner earns a solid four-star rating for its wide menu variety, consistent food quality, and satisfying comfort-style meals. It is a dependable place to enjoy a good meal with plenty of choices for different tastes.

We had to wait about 30 minutes, so we knew this place had to be popular for a good reason. Menu was diverse, mostly breakfast options, but got some brunch/lunch options as well. I got the traditional eggs, potatoes, bacon, and waffle combo. I thought the waffle was soft and had great flavor to it. Wasn't like those you taste at Waffle House or IHOP. The seasoning on the other entrees weren't bad, not overly salted, and it just felt like homely cooked breakfast food. I can see why a lot of people are fond of this place & why it's always so packed! Definitely will be back next time I'm in town and if you're from the north and a big diner fan like me, you'll love this place.

The diner's booths are cozy vinyl classics, but every inch of wall space is plastered with Time Square posters, yellow taxi figurines, and souvenir Statue of Liberties. It's like someone raided every gift shop in Times Square, tossed it all into a blender, and poured it over a classic small-town greasy spoon. The coffee's bottomless, the breakfast comes with a side of gossip, and your view is equal parts pancake stack and Empire State Building snow globe. I would recommend the breakfast where the pancake breakfast is less an event and more a ritual. The stacks of golden pancakes share the plate with sausage links that taste like they've been holding down the fort since forever, and the coffee--always hot, always refilled before you can ask--runs like traffic on a green light. It's the kind of breakfast where the comfort is in its predictability: simple, sturdy, and endlessly caffeinated, like the city itself. Worth the trip: big stacks, small town, and enough New York souvenirs to stock Times Square. Cheers!

Y'all, why has it been so long since I've eaten here? I've been wanting fried chicken (yeah, I…read morecould cook it, but so much work), and then my daughter made herself a waffle the other night...........so I HAD to go. We got there around noon, and it was popping. I mean, it's a Wednesday and very busy, but no wait. We each got the chicken and waffles. My daughter had asked if they would give her regular butter, since she's not a fan of strawberries.............but she enjoyed the strawberry butter very much. I'm sure we could have split it, but nope, we each got it. Half a chicken, cut into the individual pieces, and that huge, fluffy, flavorful waffle with that nice scoop of strawberry butter. We brought our limited leftovers home, yes, we mostly ate our food. For a place with a pretty extensive, but not huge, menu, it is good. The chicken and waffles though are awesome. Our server was Jonny, and he was fast, efficient and pleasant. We hope to visit again soon, very soon.

Then, I moved inside to see what the delay was, and the host tried to seat me at the counter. Really? I'd been waiting 30 minutes, and you won't seat me at the empty table. So I declined and said I'd wait for my table. I never got a notice on my phone either, so what was the point of that system if you need to be inside the small waiting area to be called? I could see the open table, but I was not seated for another ten minutes. They didn't want me at the big table. Then it was interesting to watch all the staff walk by and ask who had my table. How do they not know which tables each person has? Someone eventually came by, asked if I'd been helped, and took my drink and food orders, since I'd been waiting quite a while. I ordered a half-and-half tea. I'm not sure she knew what that was, as she kept saying "unsweet". The first tea was half-and-half, but the refill was unsweetened. I went with the chicken pot pie, as that is what caught my eye. I expected a delicious dish, but what I received was disappointing. The ratio of the chicken, gravy and veggies was way off. I'd say there was enough low-quality processed chicken for three to four people, a little gravy and even less veggies. I had a bowl of processed chicken cubes with a splash of sauce, not what I had in mind. I usually skip the pastry part, but I ate that as I needed something other than chicken. I left some of the chicken in the dish. The waitress didn't even offer me a to-go box. It was that bad that I wouldn't eat it anyway. My check was brought out soon after I got my food. I don't understand the rush, but bringing the check early won't get me out any faster and lowers your tip. This was just a really bad experience, and I don't see myself returning. I have liked the food in the past.
