What a treat while visiting Regina for work. This is one of those places that are true institutions. Right when you walk in there are celeb pictures on the wall. Its like taking a trip back in time. This is a first class 5 star steak house. I had the 14 ounce dry rubbed rib eye. It tasted absolutely delicious. I like my steak rare, and it was cooked perfectly. It was obvious from the taste that this was a fantastic piece of beef. The service was impeccable. I have absolutely nothing negative to say. The bottom line is this is a first rate steak house. I eat here while in Regina, and recommend that anyone who comes to Regina should definitely make it a point to eat here at least once. read more

They deserve about a 3.25 stars. The good: ambiance def. Attentive service. The appetizers with ribs and cheese delicious. A filet mignon cooked a perfect medium rare. I ordered an old fashioned which was served with a million small and crushed ice cubes watering down the drink. That's sacrilege. Albiet when asked I did get another one with a large ice cube. This isn't the place I should've needed to ask something so basic. The main reason for the star removal was my food I'd ordered. An 8 oz Kobe Wagyu Steak. $75/ piece ordered medium rare. Incredibly overdone for the first inch all around. Close to well done. There was no real taste of the Wagyu. The marbeling was lost. It was truly sad. The server took too long to come by at that time for me to ask for a replacement. Ate what I did. I did inform the server and showed him the steak ( brown on the inside). To his credit he did ask to replace. I didn't have time at that point and just decided against it. My wife's $25 steak tasted better. That's just wrong. There was no comprensation with the Wagyu steak about taking it off the bill, complimentary dessert. Nothing. I was expecting much more from Diplomat. read more

Every once in a while you stumble across a gem. We went out for Easter dinner in Regina to The Diplomat. What an awesome restaurant. The decor is amazing. Photos of all the famous people that have eaten there. And there are a lot. They have been in business for over 40 years in the same family. Chatted with one of the owners for 20 minutes There wine cellar is extensive. They have the largest bottle of wine in Canada. Equal to 24 bottles. The service was 10/10. The food was amazing. The Diplomat is deceptive from the outside which looks like a gentleman's club. However, step foot inside and you'll find that it is a TRUE gentleman's club. I immediately felt underdressed as did my copilot. We were dressed somewhat casually coming from the Hilton across the street. I opted for a glass of Canadian Pinot Noir to pair with my $98.00CAD dry aged ribeye. The steak was perfectly cooked, though it could have stood another week or so dry aging. That wonderful rich, nutty, beefy flavor found in most dry aged meats was somewhat lacking. Only somewhat. The a la carte sides are typical for most steakhouses. Our server was knowledgeable, professional, genuine and a bit comedic which made the dining experience even more enjoyable. I order the steak and lobster, my wife the Peppercorn steak my daughter the child's menu steak and our friend the Pickerrell. The meal was cooked to perfection. For dessert we had peaches Flambé . I'm not gonna lie, I'm in town from the San Francisco Bay Area for work. SF being what many to consider a foodie Mecca, i wasn't initially impressed with my options in Regina. Work was footing the bill, so I asked around for a good place to get a steak. I was told either Golfs or The Diplomat. I'm pretty sure even trying Golfs would be a disappointment now. The Diplomat was just a rock solid experience, far exceeding my expectations. I eat meat in large quantities. I'm your typical excessive American :). I go for the ribeye... Always. The Diplomat had 3 choices of Ribeyes. The 19oz bone-in, a 14oz dry aged and this ridiculous "Kobe Tomahawk" - 32oz?!? 19oz bone-in was great. I ordered rare. It came a perfect rare. Perfect salt and pepper combo - not too much, not too little. It wasn't the absolute best steak I ever had (Vito's Chophouse in Orlando), but it was close enough to want to go back for a second. Meal came paired with a twice baked potato and a fresh medley of steamed veggies. I spoke with with the owner and his son for a bit since it was slow. They opened in the late 70s and short of some of the plates and such, the decor doesn't look like its been updated in a while. It's definitely old school, dark wood steakhouse. But that's cool, this ain't Vegas. Last but not least, these guys know their wine. I saw a bottle of 2006 Cardinale. That's an impressive bottle. And if you know what they've gotta go through to get some of that stuff with the provincial alcohol laws up here, even more impressive. It wasn't cheap (about $80 after tip for the meal and a drink or two). But it was a damn good meal. read more

I started with warm bread which turns out to be your supermarket rolls ciabatta style. The $44.95 19 oz ribeye with bone is no more than 13oz. The flavour was ok but the meat was of average tenderness. Like aaa quality of a supermarket. The rice pilaf served in a very small ramekin. Since i was traveling alone i wanted to order some half orders of side dishes.The kitchen said they wont do have orders of side dishes. Thats really smart (sarcasm) because i ended up not ordering any side dishes. The servers are friendly but not super knowledgeable about the menu. For dessert the saskatoon berry pie was microwaved with the soggy crust. The restaurant is clean and has the celebrity photos but doesn't live up to the potential. Incredibly disappointing, horrible food. We went here on Valentine's Day this year. Me and my wife each has a 10 oz steak with potatoes (due to it being Valentine's Day they limited items on the menu that you could order) each plate cost $48.00. The steaks were absolutely TERRIBLE. It's as if they went to sobeys and purchased some 5 dollar fast fry thin steaks, fried them up in a frying pan, dumped some butter on them didn't bother with even a single grain of any type of seasoning and sent them out for us to eat. I have never had a more disappointing meal on my entire life. And this place is supposed to be a fine dining restaurant? I didn't bother with telling out (very old, and incredibly awkward man) waiter about how horrible our food was as I didn't want to ruin the supposed to be nice evening with my wife. I will never return to eat here again. The food is disgusting and I cannot believe they charge the insane prices for items on their menu (ours 48$ steaks were the cheapest on the menu) Would 1000% not recommend eating here. read more

Every year, my close friends and I get together for a nice supper around Christmas time. Last year we decided to try the Diplomat. I called several weeks in advance to book one of their private rooms, since there was going to be 16 of us. I received a confirmation call the night before to confirm numbers. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were informed that we had been 'bumped' from the private room, but they had a table ready for us (even though they failed to mention this during the confirmation call the night before). The table was a booth, with 2 more tables added. The added tables stretched across a very busy area, so that staff was constantly squeezing past the person at the end of the table and occasionally pushing the person forward to get passed. The service was also painfully slow. Granted, we were a large group, and it was very busy since it was the Christmas season, but when we get together as a group, we like to have several cocktails and enjoy the evening. Unfortunately, our waiter did not come around to check on us often, and all of us were quickly left with empty glasses. Eventually we ordered several bottle of champagne so that we could serve ourselves. The food was very good, though again it took quite awhile to take our order, and even longer to bring out our food. I spoke to the manager and informed him that we were not very happy with being bumped from the private room and with the slow service. He said that he would be sure to do something for us. The 'something' turned out to be free shots for the table (even though there were 4 pregnant women at the table) and gift certificates for 2 for 1 appetizers that had to be used within 2 months. To top it all off, there was a gratuity added to the bill. I realize that is common with a large group, but as far as I'm concerned, a gratuity should not be mandatory when service is sub-par. I actually tried not to pay the gratuity, but I was informed that I was required to pay it. Needless to say, we will not be returning, and I would certainly not recommend the Diplomat Steak House for large groups. read more

Here for the Agribition show, ate here 3 nights in a row and had the best 3 cuts of meat I've ever had! Ribeye 1st, Prime rib 2nd, 12 ounce fillet 3rd, all three were the tops I've had. I'm from Kansas and travel the U.S. For work and hit all the steak joints every trip, puts even great places to shame. And Dimitri, aire to the thrown here is absolutely 1st class! **Worst Meal To Come Home To** I will start by saying that my family is not wealthy. However, after flying home for Christmas from Toronto, to have a meal with my mother, she treated me with a meal at the Diplomat. It was my first time there. For a fine dining restaurant, one would think that a simple order of a steak sandwich and fries, and my mother's burger and fries, would be fresh--especially when combined, the bill totalled over $50. However, the fries were crusty, old-tasting an appearing to have recently thawed out. And upon being asked by our waitress how the food was, I said everything tastes fresh except for the fries. She would go on to tell the owner's son this, who, in turn, walked by our table a gave a snickering laugh. He followed five or so minutes later by saying he heard there was a problem with our meal, to which I explained the aforementioned to him. I said they taste old, frozen, not fresh. The man replied that they were, indeed, frozen, and that's what patrons at the Diplomat, purportedly one of Regina's finer establishments, liked the most. I replied that after travelling home from Toronto to be treated for a nice meal, I was disappointed that for over $50, not all of our food was fresh. At this point, the man became increasingly defensive by raising his voice--keep in mind, there were other people eating at tables nearby--and asking what else he could get us. He talked over my mother, and said "Another starch?" as he gazed at her burger and fries. He then called me out for my comment about the old nature of the fries, to which I explained honesty is important and for an expensive restaurant, this was a disappointment. I will never eat there again for what happened to my mom and I. I would have never mentioned anything about the privileged meal we shared if it hadn't been for the fact that it was my mom spending a lot of money on our meals and that part of our meals were old. Not to mention, the owner's son was an arrogant, loud-mouthed bully who tried to embarrass my mom and I through the scene he caused. Stay away, people. read more

This was my favourite steakhouse in Regina. However, my recent dinner there was less than memorable. My steak Neptune ( although I was pretty sure I had ordered the Peppercorn steak ) was overcooked, The sauce was cool and slightly curdled, the sauce had no flavour and all I got was a crab claw with no meat whatsoever. I was with my son and he asked me not to complain. He enjoyed his meal thoroughly although it took five minutes to get his peppercorn sauce which should've arrived hot with the meal. Wine selection is excellent however as were the garlic fries and table side Caesar salad. Within the top 20% of the steakhouses I've been to. Got the strip steak, as that was 1 of the fewer options which are around 10oz (didn't want to waste food, since I don't eat that much these days). Their Caesar salad was amazing with their home made dressing, which put it over the top. The vegetables were cooked perfectly and the rice pilaf was very tasty. We celebrated our 51st Wedding Anniversary at this restaurant last night. I had the chicken Parmesan and it tasted rather spongy and fake - not like real chicken breast meat. This morning I woke up with swollen lips from an allergic reaction to something I ate - suspicious of the ingredients in the chicken. The steak was cooked unevenly. It was well done in places and rare in others. The shrimp was undercooked. Rice was undercooked. All of the sauces tasted like reheated Sysco garbage. We are never heading back. Even with a gift card. I'd rather sell it to get cash in order to cook for myself. The decor was out dated and dusty. The vibe was stuffy. There is an option for a 10oz New York steak on the regular menu for $31 and a 10oz New York on the children's for $14. There are no difference between the dinner except the regular menu came with a garden salad. The potatoes are the stuffed kind you can get at M & M's meats, no sour cream, or additions offered. - Waitress knew nothing about the wine, and for a higher end restaurant she should have a little bit of knowledge - I ordered a paralyzer and both curdled and I has to send one back for tasting like water - meat has not seasoned well read more
