Was a parent chaperone of four+ kindergartners today at the Discovery Museum. Staff have students arriving by bus and set to tour the museum down to a fine science. We were greeted at the bus with colored bracelets for each teacher's classroom. Everything is planned from arrival, lab time, lunchtime, departure, and the free time in between. It was a great visit. The kids had a wonderful time! They learned about vortices, electrical circuits, built group and individual Legos, thoroughly enjoyed seeing the Lego sculptures and displays, and built their own Lego habitats in their Lab experience. Thanks to all for making this fabulous educational experience possible. 5 Stars

Time and time again I get the opportunity to review the discovery museum. I was a volunteer and was able to attend a field trip where local elementary students were able to enjoy the learnings of this center. The discovery museum does a wonderful job at educating children and such an interactive way and the staff is very friendly and able to guide you through each room explaining how to use each installation. This is such a wonderful learning center for Littles and I myself have even attended on adult nights and have learned amazing things about science local city development and it's just the best venue. We really appreciate everything that the discovery museum does for our city and the way that it gives back.

Always a great experience at the Discovery Museum. An enriching experience for kids and adults, the Master Brick exhibit is so much fun to check out and interact with. You can race to put together specific legos, checkout the lab to create your own habitat, and much more. The cloud climbing area seems to be every kids favorite, along with the stars and galaxy exhibit on the same floor. So many interactive spaces for kids to learn with hands on experiences. Affordable and fun, the museum offers free field trips to all Title I schools, as well as interactive summer camps for all ages. Check out their page for more information! Super grateful to have such a unique resource for kiddos in town. An Italian restaraunt by the name of Pasta Fresca is now located next door if visitors would like to enjoy fresh, homemade pasta dishes for lunch also.

This place was fun and interactive for children. A lot of the exhibits weren't working or open. I guess the major ones only open on the weekends so keep that in mind if you plan to bring your kids, the boat feature with the water was amazing. There was a few cool exhibits, but for the cost if you live locally, you should probably get a member membership. It seems to be a lot cheaper in the long run.

We came here since the weather conditions for skiing weren't favorable. While this place is not huge, their exhibits are great and everyone enjoyed their hands on activities. From making box cars to learning about human anatomy and space, this is a great place for everyone to explore and learn.

Had a blast as usual. So much to see. Loved interacting with all the food vendors. They were so nice. Explained all of their dishes. So much to try. It was great trying the new vendors I haven't tried before. I think my favorite was the cotton candy. Its the kid in me. Really like the non alcoholic drinks. Definitely something for everyone. Its been years since I had been to the discovery museum.

My kids are about to go into middle school and we have been coming here for ten years. The thing I really appreciated about this trip with them was the maker space. They were able to use tools like cardboard cutters and hot glue guns to create whatever they wanted to. The creative outlet in the quiet room was a much needed retreat from the loud hustle of all the other rooms with spring break camps going on. One son made a skateboard, one made a pterodactyl and I made a Weiner dog. As an early childhood teacher I'd like to make the suggestion to move from typical "low temp" glue guns to "cool tool" variety, which is are significantly less hot. I know, I used them with my four year olds. I encourage the museum to get one and do an experiment to see the difference. While there I heard many people, including adults and my own son, reel from the hot glue on this skins.

    Loved their costume.

My granddaughter loves this place. Tonight they had a social event for Yelp reviewers. Folks in costume with a DJ. Dozens of local eateries and food trucks had samples available. Actually ran into some friends from a local bar.

Honest kiddo reviews: Do it!!! For the kids! 5/5 So thankful I decided to come in today.... I haven't been in the discovery in years and I can simply say that it's an amazing experience didn't remember... From the 5 and under play place for kiddos, it's amazing to have a place where they can play and explore creativity with other children and get to experience so many sensory pleasing experiences that help stimulate children's creativity and energy. Then you have tech, as well as knowledge for adults to thrive in as well while kids play with stem toys and explore their engineering minds.. Simply amazing to have a place like this for children to find more of their creative nature.

We love this museum and were thrilled when our 3-year-old was gifted a year membership. Unfortunately, every time we visit, it feels overwhelmingly crowded, making it hard for him to enjoy. On weekends, there's barely any elbow room, and on weekdays, multiple school field trips happen at once. The exhibits and water play area become chaotic, and I find myself more focused on keeping him safe than letting him explore. Many older kids run wild with little supervision, snatching toys and pushing past younger ones, while their parents are often preoccupied with their phones or reading on a bench. I really wish there were designated times for younger kids to play safely. Until then, we'll have to be very selective about when we visit.

    Dara W.

Such a great experience. We had friends in town with kiddos. So we headed over there and spent about 3hrs roaming around into each room. Lots of great exhibits and interactive rooms for kids (and adults) to explore and play. The bottom level has a cool display of the Truckee River water flow from Tahoe and a huge climbing "tree" that lots of kids were going up and down in. I'd highly recommend this experience. It was a great time and there's a gift shop. They also have a private parking lot.

    Parker R.

Loved this place! We came here while vacationing. Our little one loved every minute of it. Unlike some of the kid museums in California, most of the items were functional here hahah It wasn't super crowded on weekend which was nice and we got to take our time doing all the activities. The only downside would be the cost but worth it every penny.

This is an example of what the Discovery Museum's main exhibits look like.

Most recently we visited Toytopia. This exhibit offers the chance to explore a hands-on history of toys from the past and into the future. My kids loved the oversized robotic claw, reminiscent of an amped up arcade machine. It was a blast trying to get the individually articulating fingers to close around the ball in order to lift it into the basket for the big reward. We also enjoyed the oversized battleship game. So fun to play and we spent 20-30 min there. Mr Potato Head was old school fun too. We made a competition out of it to see who could make the wackiest example. I think I won... or maybe my kids let me win. But the favorite had to be the mini arcade they had setup with some of the best old school cabinets. Donkey Kong, DK Jr., Dig Dug and so many more are all here as part of the exhibit and you could spend a long time here without realizing it! Oh and there's even a Zoltar fortune teller too! When you're done at toytopia you can go learn the history of Wilbur D May on the other side of the museum. The space is amazing, there is a beautiful park across the street, and the teachers were energetic and had plans for each day. Kids used a different medium each day and did sculpting, 3D printing, etc. They went to the park almost every day and made creative projects where they learned a lot, my daughter loved it. This summer has been completely different. From the moment I brought my daughter in on Monday and asked where she should put her stuff and was told, "I don't know, I guess we can try over there?" I could tell there was no coherent plan. I was also told right away it was going to be tough because there are "a lot more students this year" when it seems like the camp is the same size or even smaller than I have observed in years past. Most of the day is spent in "free time" where there are legos and arts and crafts in a room, there is a yellow piece of tape the students are supposed to stay behind and they are kind of left to their own devices. They have gone to the park once. I asked today if they would be going, and I was told by the teacher they didn't want to get left out if it starts pouring, even though it's an unseasonably beautiful day with a high in the low to mid 70s. There is an 8% chance of rain, in the afternoon, and when I said I don't think it's supposed to rain the teacher told me that her phone said "blaring thunderstorms." The only medium the kids have used is plaster and hot glue, and there is no exploring of the space and activities in other parts of the beautiful space like there used to be. The kids are safe, and it's not like anything is horribly wrong, but there is no creativity or coherent plan, and my daughter, who never complains, said it's boring this year and she doesn't want to go back. I brought this up with the teacher and she informed me it's her first time there, and she's "still trying to figure out the camp and what is and isn't allowed." I'm not sure completely what that means, but for the students who signed up for this week, that doesn't do them much good. She also mentioned "Well, we'll be doing a lot more stuff today," which I guess is great, but also an admission they haven't done much, and it's already the last day of the camp for this session. It is a CLEAR case of making things easier for the teachers over prioritizing the experience of the students. Kids need to be safe, but teachers also need to be proactive and creative, and if there are too many kids for this to happen, there needs to be more staff added.

The theater remains closed, but I have had the pleasure of seeing the Merry War Theater Group perform outdoor Shakespeare on the steps and front lawn of the Lear for two summers now, and damn do they do an excellent job of making the space work for them. Big trees provide nice shade for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening performances. The set construction uses well the front porch and side lawn. And alleyway: a character always needs to make an entrance on a motorcycle! The tickets are $5 suggested donation and one can picnic in the audience area before the show. Chase McKenna is a genius at making classic Shakespeare fun: in 2014 "A Midsummer Night's Dream" had Burners as fairies and in 2015 "Much Ado About Nothing" was set in Texas. So much fun! The cast always does a great job including music and physical comedy in the performance, too. I understand that TEDxReno took place in the Lear in 2014. Maybe in the future more good things besides Merry War's summer productions will happen! But I hear there is also an unfortunate history of failed attempts to restore the Lear. So... yeah. Nevertheless: four stars for an aesthetically pleasing exterior and for being a great site for outdoor Shakespeare.

Love hearing live music in more intimate venues like this where you can really see the performers on stage from all rows. What's great about the RCO is how accessible the music is while not just sticking to the most well-known standards. The conductor, Kelly Kuo (who gave engaging and informative introductions) said all of the pieces were new performances for the ensemble, which is amazing! A last-minute substitution, a rendition of The Nightingale composed by Kevin Lau, was very well done. Also, someone from the audience was given the opportunity to experience the final piece on stage with the orchestra...a rare treat. Subscriptions for the annual performances are very reasonably priced, and include a free talk prior to performances. Student tickets are only $5! They also generously offered free tix to this performance for federal gov't employees. Highly recommend checking out this local gem! TIP: free standard parking is available at the Brian Whalen Parking Complex, a short walk away; accessible parking is right outside the concert hall.

I was sitting close to the front though. The costumes for the kids were cute. Some parts were funny. I enjoyed it. The theater is small. There are three columns facing the stage. I arrived before 7pm and most of the center column seating were not available. Most of those seats were reserved. There are limited bathrooms available due to renovation too. Apple square readers were available at the entrance to accept credit card payment. The play could have been a better experience if there were ushers to enforce basic manners from the audience. One person got up to go to the bathroom at least five times, getting up from the center section in the front. The bathroom is to the right of the stage when facing at the stage. There were seats available near that door so that less people are disturbed when nature calls! There were people late, 20 minutes late! One person from that late group was also late coming back from intermission. And that same person was recording the play with the light from the camera lit up for almost the entire 2nd half! Proud family member, yes. But very inconsiderate. And staff did not say or do anything. The vibe felt like parents watching their kids perform. It was worth $12, but if I had to pay more, I would rate this review much lower for lack of quality control. Great play. Bad audience.

As a theater, it's decent. Think "High school theater where they care about their theater program." It seats about 200 people (I think, I'm terrible at estimating), and I know that the Theater Works of Northern Nevada run their shows out of there. The sound and lighting are adequate, not amazing, but not completely primitive either. On either side, there are doors that lead to either the parking lot or the rest of the Nelson building. These are a little loud for people coming and going during a performance, but overall not super distracting. The chairs and carpets are in good repair and it looks like they work to maintain a clean atmosphere in the theater. At the moment, the bathroom situation sucks. You have to go downstairs and down a hallway to find the one-holer (which, during a well-attended performance is a bear during intermission), but the woman who announced the show mentioned that this was unusual and that UNR had just begun construction on the same-floor bathroom. Overall, it's a nice place to see a show, but don't expect the pomp and circumstance of somewhere like the Pioneer.

Although the information suggested low back beach chairs, most people were in higher chairs, so it was a little difficult to see, but the acoustics were great!. The band was excellent, and the venue was good. They could have cleaned off the outside chairs, prior to the event, as there were cobwebs and tree sap all over them. There were three food trucks, and a full-service bar. There was an array of food (burgers/grilled cheese, donuts, and jerked chicken). Unfortunately, the burger and grilled cheese truck ran out of propane, very early, so there was an extended wait for food, while they waited for another propane bottle to arrive. Overall, a great event! If you're looking for a beautiful location on the river to chill and enjoy an outdoor concert, this is the spot! We will definitely purchase more tickets!
