With interactive exhibits and displays the discovery museum is perfect for kids and adults. While not an adults museum so to speak I cannot tell you how many time I find myself playing and interacting with the exhibits while our daughter plays. We purchased a museum membership this past year and our favorite thing to do is go on Wednesday morning for the small wonders time. This is a special time for under 5 to enjoy the museum at a slower pace. Hosting a private event at The Discovery is the best idea you could ever have! If you know me, you know I've hosted several myself, but I finally got to attend one as a guest and it was an absolute blast! For starters, it's an interactive museum and there's fun around every corner, whether you're a kid or an adult, or an adult there with a kid. The exhibits are all so engaging, and they're advanced enough for absolutely anyone to have fun. The space is massive. For really large groups that means plenty room to spread out and plenty of space to setup whatever you may need for your guests. During these pandemic times this is extremely nice because you can social distance and everyone can feel comfortable. There are several smaller private rooms too that can be used for the event. During the party I attended one housed all the food and another was setup with an experiment and activity lead by the museum! Lastly, they added a beautiful state and light setup in the recent past and that can be made available for events as well. I haven't been back to this museum for nearly a decade. I use to always bring my nephew here because he loved the cloud climber and the Trucked Connects at the lower levels. Today we came back to see the allosaurus and "Monsterfish" exhibits, and discovered the "Mindbender Mansion" where we all had fun solving some of the puzzles. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by this discovery center. They have lots of science exhibits (light, energy, space, animals, human body, etc) that are very informative for both children and adults. The kids will absolutely LOVE the watershed model where they can learn about the local natural water resource and "race" their boats along the flowing water. Don't forget to check out the "cloud" play structure, which is packed but lots of fun. The animal exhibit is a favorite which has live lizards, and also a sloth (you can watch them get fed sometimes). Parking lot is small so be prepared to drive around a few times. read more

Took the kids here twice this year and every time there is always something new. The staff is amazing: so friendly and informative. Customer service is definitely a plus especially when you have eager kids with so many questions. Also the place is always kept so clean and I'm not sure HOW? with kids all over the place all day LOL. My kids' favorite area is the big cloud structure downstairs where they can climb up to the top.. it looks a little scary to me but it keeps the kids occupied. read more

This was my first time back at the Discovery in years! I forgot how large it is! I took my 2 year old as we were gifted some tickets for her birthday. While the museum itself is a great experience overall and there is lots to do, I wouldn't say it's good for 2 and under. The top floor had a lot of fun exhibits to explore, but again, not for a 2 year old. I was definitely more interested than she was haha. She did seem to enjoy the monsterfish exhibit though. I tried to show her some of the interactive things, but I did find that a lot of stuff wasn't working properly or at all, which was very unfortunate. There was a fun station to move lights/dots around a board so we spent some time there, and I saw behind us there is a giant scrabble board which I think could be so fun! We also had some fun with the clear coloring wall! There is a room dedicated for 5 and under that we spent most of our time in that had a fun treehouse/slide, a car to work on, some foam rocks/mining stuff. She had a really great time in there and I do appreciate the dedicated space for the young ones to enjoy. We eventually made it down to the lower level which was very busy with the different camps happening. I chose to not allow her to go up in the cloud climber because there were just soo many big kids I didn't want anything to happen, but I do recall going in myself a few years ago and it is a very fun attraction! There is a very fun and large water feature for the kids to play in and there are areas that are shorter than others so the young ones can enjoy it as well. Overall the museum has tons to do and as an adult, it is all very fascinating. It's a great place to take the older kids for sure. I just wouldn't recommend if you only have a 2 year old like myself. read more

Came on a Monday and our 2 and 5 year old and had the best time. There was so much to explore and not enough time to see it all. The different rooms had themes, like puzzles, space, and art. There's also a fun physics demonstration. The biggest hits were the climb structure and river feature downstairs. Staff were super friendly. They even told us there's in and out privilege which is helpful since there are no food options inside. read more

Great for toddlers - would really keep them entertained for hours! The exhibits for older kids seemed a little lacking though. My 3 yo especially loved the climbing structure, water area, and PAINTING! They mix their paint with dishsoap so it comes off of clothes easily. Definitely save the water play for last and bring a change of clothes. read more

My first children's museum so I have no basis for comparison, but my almost-3 year-old loved it. Clearly built by someone who understands children, and they even allow you to go in and out as many times as you want for the entire day. The exhibits are amazingly thoughtful and clever, catering to an impressive age range at varying levels. Educational but also very fun, and their cloud climber is so cool. Their newest exhibit even has a live sloth! If you have kids, it's definitely worth a visit, and you'll probably enjoy it too. read more

The Face your Fears event was awesome. Adults only, we had a live DJ and many attractions from a dark room filled with scary/hidden characters, holding a snake or even a big spider in your hands, being buried alive, getting shocked, fear of eating bugs, among others. There was so many attractions and activities to experience. They catered some veggie gnocchi and good beer and wine. We had so much fun playing different games and making friends. read more

Ok so this is the first year I didn't have a membership and now that we are here on a Wednesday for the after 4pm $5 deal, I am regretting my decision of not getting a membership. So that will be happening today. Anyway....there are so many rooms of activities and learning! I can find something for my kids (under 5) in each room which is great. Of course the most fun being the under 5 room, under the stars, truckee connects, and all the crafts. I highly recommend to anyone wanting a day to get the kids energy out and use their brains! Boy, I wish a place like this was around when I was a kid. I took my niece sister and brother-in-law here for my nieces fifth birthday and all of us had a wonderful time here the exhibit we're engaging and informative. I am so glad that they made the monster fish exhibit a permanent addition to the museum. I highly recommend it with one proviso double check the calendar for the Museum Because we had planned to go to the previous day (11/3) but it was closed due to a fundraising event along with that there is at least one small corner of that was previously they're traveling exhibit area, but now is a makeshift play area. I hope they will be adding a new exhibit space in this part of the museum. read more

This place is amazing! So many exhibits that are fun and educational. Upstairs, there are many stations like a marble run and even one that times you to put together platters of food as it moves (think Lucy and Ethel at the chocolate factory). There's a giant electro sketch and my 4 yo was so happy to create energy that launched a magnet. Super pleased and would absouleuly come back. We came here at 1030am, had a snack, and I literally had to drag my kiddo out at 2pm. read more

Forget five stars, this place needs 10. Nestled in a beautiful corner of downtown Reno, this discovery center is great for kids of all ages! Whenever we are within a few hours of this place, we have to make a detour and come visit. The entire center is kid friendly and extremely educational. And each exhibit takes the kid where they are--whether they are just young enough to enjoy flipping tabs and pushing buttons to make things light up, or they can actually play the interactive games built into each room. It was amazing how each room also had sensory exhibits for each type of learner, whether verbal, auditory, reading or kinesthetic. I'm a mixed bag, so I had a great time. During our last trip, our girls had a blast playing auto shop with the replica vehicle that allows you to roll under it to inspect the transmission, engine, etc, to change tires and to check the lights. They also had an amazing time interacting with the Tahoe/Reno watershed exhibit. I could go on and on, but really, there is nothing better than going there and checking this place out in person. Plan for at least 2 hours to make sure you aren't rushed. read more

This place is one of my son's favorite places to visit. I've been here several times with my kids and with students on field trips. They have different areas for kids to explore and hands-on learning is encouraged. From climbing the cloud, playing with boats and balls in the Truckee River watershed, to the various STEM activities there is something for all young kids. They have a room just for kids under 5, which I appreciate as a parent of littles. They have party rooms that are great for birthdays too. We have a family membership and it's definitely worth it! We've had a membership here for a few years, the kids always seem to enjoy themselves while we are here. Some of the exhibits change and there are always things going on. The latest event we attended was the kids trick or treating event. They setup stations around the mesuem and gave out candy and/or toys at each station. Decorations were around the building and all of the staff was dressed up. I think the best part is they spaced everyone's tickets out to avoid overcrowding. read more

Wow, what a great place for kids and kids at heart. We were there for close to 4 hours and could of been there for another 2 if we didn't have a prior engagement. It's great fun for all ages - (the mind bending puzzle room was my favorite). They truly had everything to peak interests. Anatomy, magnetics, puzzles, space, art...Well worth the money, which wasn't much for our family of 5. My pictures don't do it any justice and I would of taken more but I was having so much fun I forgot I even had a phone for taking more. :) All the staff were so polite and friendly. For the COVID concerned-99% of the staff were walking around with spray bottles disinfecting everything touchable. Masks were a must and they had disinfecting stations throughout the facility. read more

It was my first time visiting this museum with my 17 month old. We were very excited. The first thing we did was visit the room that was meant to be for children 5 and under. As soon as we entered, we noticed many older looking kids, once of which almost trampled my child if I hadn't Intervened and pulled my child out of the way. There were many children obviously older than 5 in there and no staff to enforce the rule. Those older kids have the whole museum to explore but we're in the one section that is safest for the littles. I was very disappointed and will be calling tomorrow to follow up. read more

I've always passed by the Discovery Center but about two weekends ago, my room mate and I decided to check it out for ourselves! We at first originally thought this place was for kids, and it is, but we realized it's just as much for adults, too! We took out time while walking through the different areas, observing and learning with the many interactive exhibits. After paying admission, you are welcomed to a vast sculpture where kids can climb from the bottom floor to the top. Below is home to other exhibits, which I'll explain later. We first walked through the exhibit that informed us more about Nevada; about it's history, native animals, etc. I, personally, don't consider myself a true local since I came here less than a decade ago and taking the time to further and better understand Nevada was truly an enriching experience. We then walked through on of my favorite sections. I felt like I was back in high school in a science lab. Or better yet, one of those Bill Nye the Science Guy episodes. There was a lot of cool and fun interactive activities that we participated in. For example there was a vein viewer, a machine that uses infrared to easily see your veins under your skin! Another example would be a heart rate monitor that shows your heart beat on a giant screen for all to see. There was also a color blind test to which we discovered my room mate was partially color blind, or she just has really bad vision. Other exhibits conveyed physics, robotics, puzzles and much more. This review would be a novel if I were to explain everything the Discovery Center had to offer. My best advice is to take a day to bring friends and/or family to enjoy the Discovery Center yourselves! It was such an enlightening experience. read more

Went on a mommy & baby trip this past weekend. The Discovery Museum is only open on Saturdays & Sunday's during Covid. We arrived here around 3pm on a Sunday from Sacramento & was greeted as soon as we walked in. For my daughter & I, it was $24. Which isn't bad at all considering the many different things they had here. My daughter loves their water table and their new slime exhibit. I think we spent a majority of our time here. I love how empty it was as well & how they had a max capacity of 100 people during this time. (There was maybe like 20 people there when I went). A lot of the things were closed such as the slide & the cloud climber, but overall it was still a good place to get your kids out of the house & also social distance between other people. The staff there were super friendly, there were 2 that stood out, one was a girl (which I didn't get her name, unfortunately) & the other was Arturo. They both were so nice, asking questions & telling us if we have any questions about the museum to feel free to ask. I also love that they have a small parking space on the side, some museums I've been to have had street parking or have to park a block away & pay, so this was an added bonus. Overall, when things begin opening up more, I will definitely take another trip back here with my daughter. read more

It's not huge but a good enough size to occupy a few hours. Honestly any bigger would've been overwhelming. The Wednesday night $5 after 4 pm deal makes it extra worth it. And there is something for everyone! I saw babies in strollers engaged with the water play and my husband and tween sons really enjoyed the puzzle room. My 73 year old dad has Alzheimer's and it's incredibly hard to keep him engaged for too long but even he loved looking at most of the exhibits. After a few hours though he was ready to call it quits but I was amazed at how long this place kept him occupied. First time at this museum because the reviews were so good and I am glad we found time to stop by. This was a wonderful place to visit for our 19month old. She loved all the parts of the museum! The staff is so friendly and very engaging with the guests. It looks like the staff does a few demonstrations or share outs for the guests. We didn't get to watch a few of the demonstrations because our little one was so excited to walk around but we heard the cheers from the crowd who seemed to love it. They have a lot of interactive activities for all ages and lots of different reptiles, animals, exhibits on the human body, an area for da Vinci, display of some of the Great Lakes, and much more! We attended my husband's niece's birthday party here on a Sunday afternoon and although the thought of it was cool, the overall venue was not the greatest. Upon arrival, it is difficult to find the room location, once you actually find it, you quickly find out that what they call a 40 person capacity room, should not be. The room was so tiny, all the adults who were standing were constantly dancing around each other attempting to get out of the way. Not to mention the hot room gets even hotter when it hits max capacity of people even on a cold, winter day. When it gets near closing it is constantly announced on the intercom that the will be closing in X number of minutes. This is great for those who are there to just enjoy the museum, however not ideal for a birthday party you are trying to enjoy with friends and family. Lastly, the kids got to do an activity with puffy paint but the instructors who led this were not on time and the artwork was still super wet when it was time to leave so the puffy paint was getting everywhere. I would highly reconsider if you are choosing to have a birthday party here. The only reason I gave it a 3 star was because the museum itself is nice but if I were to give a party venue side of it stars, it would probably be a 1-2 star venue for me. read more

The Yelpstronomy to support the museum was a kick in the pants! We had bourbon, beer, bagels, 'faux sushi', and oh lest ya not forget the wine! We met great people, mingled with strangers, tasted great snacks... oh it was so much fun! Having been a member here for years it is sad to see how far the Discovery has fallen. What once was an awesome place to explore science and technology, has become just a set of woke talking points. The exhibits have not been updated in years, many are broken and not functioning, and the only new one "Energía" is a boring walk through woke liberal talking points. Science should have no agenda or political bias, but just facts and learning. Sadly, we will no longer be supporting the museum or renewing our family membership. read more

If you have kids and are looking to kill some time while you're in Reno, this is the place to be! We came here last Saturday, with my 3 kids. They all had fun with their hands on demos and displays. My little 20 month old seemed more interested in the water area than the other two older ones. He didn't want to leave, had to carry him out of there without having a meltdown, success! What I liked about this Discovery museum is that, each subject has it's own room/station. You move from room to room, less overwhelming that way for the kids. As a Mommy, I've come to appreciate things like that! The kids had their time playing and touching each station before we moved onto the next room. The joy on their faces and the excitement when they entered each room, made this place well worth it! There was so much for the kids to do! The place was less crowded than I had expected on the day we went, which was a much better experience since the kids didn't have to wait long between turns. The convenience of having numerous bathrooms on each floor, made it so much easier for the kids to take bathroom breaks and not be too far from the parents! Win Win! I am from Sacramento, making trips to Reno is part of our family tradition. We are in town several times a year! He's always very excited to go there and go through the whole entire museum. He's especially excited on the weekends and during vacation weeks when they are more activity tables put up throughout the museum where kids can do arts/craft/experiments with a person guiding them through it. I came to the discovery museum with my granddaughter, who by the way, actually does walk on water! She was up for the weekend from Southern California and this is the perfect place to take an eight-year-old! There were some very difficult puzzles that we all got to work on, she got to play a spelling game using her feet, we adults actually had a lot of fun as well! After several hours of rain teasing, we went downstairs and shopped the gift shop. We each got a little something to continue to tease our brains long after we left the museum! I highly recommend everyone stopping in! Kids and adults alike! There are so many interesting facts and games that Even adults will have difficulty figuring out! If you are ever looking for something to do with the kids in Reno besides the hotels and shopping then this is the place for you. I've been coming here for years with my kids when we are in area. It is a large two floor building with a ton of activities to do that can take up the whole day. It's pretty clean and not crowded at all. The exhibit are fun and they newly opened the Mindbener Mansion a mystery room kinda like clue. Each room is filled with puzzles and activities that can be tricky for some adults. On the weekends they even have fun DIY projects. The weekend we went we got to make bath bombs. Our favorite game was spelling fever. The screen prompts you a question and you have to answer it with the letters all scrabbled up on the floor. Each time you have to step on the letter and spell a word with in a minute. Some of the questions are tricky. Notes: No cafe inside, but donut shop located next door. If you want to bring snacks they do have tables and a microwave. They have a community coat rack if you don't want to drag your jacket around. Small store to buy fun items. Bathrooms are on the 1st floor. The museum is good for toddlers and up. Special room just for toddlers as well. I will definitely be going back. read more

It is great that Reno has such a fun and enjoyable museum. Brought our kiddos for a first time visit and had a blast. They both loved the hands on water feature.
