I wasn't originally going to go to The Dog Pound but when the restaurant I first tried wasn't pet-friendly I ended up at The Dog Pound and boy I am not disappointed! The staff is super friendly and jumped up to assist me when I walked in. It smells amazing when you enter the door like smoked meats. I ordered their pork shoulder special with baked beans. It was so flavorful and so much food. There was enough leftover to make another meal. It was hard to stop eating because it was so yummy. Another couple walked up while I was eating and I was telling them how good the food was. They said they knew and eat there at least once a week. I can see why! Let me start by saying the staff was amazing and the service was great. It's a super cute dive spot. The baked beans were out of this world. But otherwise, sadly disappointing. I was super excited to try the hot dogs that were shown in the photos, so I was surprised to arrive to find just a regular hot dog and a chili cheese dog on the menu. We ordered a smoked sausage, a chili cheese dog, potato salad and baked beans. Everything came out quickly, but the bagged shredded cheese on the chili cheese dog was not even remotely melted, so it made the whole hot dog cold. The smoked sausage was literally a regular piece of sausage that looked like it came out of grocery store, with nothing on it. The potato salad was pretty standard. The only saving grace was the baked beans...I wish I had just gotten a tub of those to eat! Sweet, savory, lots of bacon, onions, peppers. Thankfully the price was very reasonable because otherwise I would have felt cheated. So buyers beware...don't follow the pictures, they don't have the majority of those items. read more

I enjoyed my meal here! Asked what they were famous for and got that- the pulled pork. Comes with side of potato salad or chips and a drink. Very tasty meal and at a great price. Hot dogs are an American staple and The Dog Pound takes them to the next level. They have brats, Italian sausages, hot links whatever you want. The brat had the perfect snap to the casing. My only asterisk would be that the "chili" is more of just a meat sauce but it is still very good. The staff were friendly but definitely a good addition to Cave City. Stopped for the night in Cave City, KY. Long day driving and didn't feel like going out to a restaurant for supper. Directly across from our hotel was the cutest little building called The Dog Pound, a hot dog stand. Neither my husband or myself felt like eating salt-filled hot dogs but it was either that or drive to a restaurant. I walked into the Dog Pound and was greeted by Big John, the owner. The kind of guy who has never met a stranger and makes everyone feel like like they're family. Turns out Big John makes his own hot dogs, sausage and brats - NO nitrates or sugar, and not over-salted! SCORE!! They also make their own potato salad and relishes. There are so many choices of hot dogs, Polish sausages, burgers, etc.! I got my husband a hot dog topped with thin-sliced roast beef, mozzarella and bacon. Also got him a side of potato salad. I got a Polish sausage with sauerkraut and bacon. My husband said, "This is the BEST hot dog I've ever eaten, and this potato salad is OFF THE CHAIN good!" My Polish sausage was very flavorful and I really liked that the sauerkraut wasn't super wet to make the bun all soggy. There is an outside seating area where customers can sign the roof with their name and where they're from. Karaoke on Wednesday and live music on weekends. Such a cool little place! The staff and service were both great. One of their steamers went down while we were there and they handled it very nicely. There's options on the menu that should please most people. They also happily make their dogs without buns if requested. The chihuahua was very good. Definitely recommend. However, the chili dog is why there's only 3 stars. It's not chili. It was completely disappointing. It's basically only ground beef with not much flavor at all. Skip that one. If I'm ever back in Cave City, I'd definitely give some other options a try. read more

I heard about this place while at a meeting of HVAC & Plumbing contractors in E-Town. Since I live in Barren County, Mark R. suggested I try this place out. Sign on the door directs you to the order window on the left side under the covered porch. I decided to try the "Wild Bill." Chili, cheese, onion, & jalapenos. Big Jack, the owner, said they make their own chili. . . no beans! Yay! But then I experienced the hospitality. . . Big Jack invited me inside to dine. When I walked in, there were 2 tables, a 4-top with 5 people, and another 4-top with 1 person. Apparently a regular, Jack told me to join Jim P, and promised he wouldn't bite (Dog Pound humor apparently). But what a treat. I met a new friend, had great conversation, and a fantastic meal. The dog had that great "snap" when you bite in, great flavor, and the chili was awesome. I even met up with a former client of mine sitting at the other table, and re-established that business contact. What more can you ask for? Bottom-line, I will be back. Hard to find a good hot dog place. So, when I saw the Dog Pound and decided to try it, I had doubts. Well, doubts no more! It's not only good, it's GREAT! Had a Chicago Dog with potato salad and a soda called "Ski". The soda was lemon/orange and was very refreshing. I can see how other reviewers gave the potato salad high marks. They sprinkle a little bit of paprika on top. Excellent taste. And the Chicago Dog? Best I've ever eaten! The dog itself is their own recipe which uses quality ingredients. The next time I'm there I'll try a Wild Bill and get some more of that potato salad. read more

Wow a great find! Driving down to Florida from Indy and needed to stop for food. We decided on an adventure instead of the typical fast food and so glad we did. This place may be small but big in service and the food out weighs the size. We were greeted with such friendliness and an awesome sense of humor that made you feel at home. I had the special, a hot dog with Mac and cheese and bacon. Two of my sons had the Chicago special. My other son and husband had cheeseburgers. Everything was absolutely delicious! He also gave us a sample of the potato salad, also delicious. Needless to say this will be our stop every year when we head to Florida. Sadly though we have to wait to next year to have it again. My friend had heard of this place another time she had driven through Cave City, KY, so we decided to swing by on our way back to town. There was a decent sized menu with a lot of delicious sounding dogs. The only things that put me off was that there was only one person waiting and the person at the window said there was a wait because of to-go orders which I can understand but seemed odd despite the lack of people at the actual restaurant as well. Maybe a good idea to keep dogs that are ready to go and assemble? The only other thing that off-put me was that there was an intoxicated truck driver that kept trying to be near my friend and I and talk to us in the middle of a pandemic without a mask on and we were visibly uncomfortable and ignoring the man and the employee (owner?) at the window didn't ask if we were good or for this man to put a mask on. Food was good, would get it again but probably to go so that I felt safer in my car and not having people without masks coming to the table during this pandemic. Stopped in while on vacation. My husband, 8 year old daughter and I tried a little bit of everything. It was amazing. I loved the burger with ham cheese and pineapple. My husband had the slaw dogs and I had the Chicago dog. My only critique would be there was more topping than hotdog and it made it difficult to eat with your hands. We definitely got dog bit at the dog pound. The food was delicious and the service was even better. The owner came out and talked with us and gave us tips about where to go and what to do in town. He was a very friendly man who seems to be friends with everyone and loves what he does. Now, back to the dogs, there is absolutely no way to describe the feeling after the first bite. I had the Wally Mutt and it was loaded with ham, American cheese, and bacon. Everything was perfection! My husband had the bulldog, which was topped with roast beef, provolone, and bacon, and it was absolutely delicious. The potato salad was so creamy and had amazing flavor. The owner must have liked us because he gave us a sample (pretty large) of the barbecue and it was delicious, which leads me to believe the pit bull would be incredible.
