TLDR: this groomer was extremely emotional/overwhelmed, very quick to blame customer when stressed, and was very rude (so how can I trust you will treat my dog well). We were scheduled to bring our 2 old English sheepdogs for all except trim (so, read: large dogs, thick coats). I did tell them they were trimmed down to 1.5" when scheduled. An hour into them having our dogs the female owner calls us and literally called us "dishonest" and asked why I lied to her (when I'm an extremely honest person, likely to a fault...). Literally how she started that conversation before saying more. Blamed me for telling her our one dog (who has show dog quality coat thickness and purebred/strong lineage) had under 1" coat when I for sure did not say that - in fact I had originally told her the reason I didn't want her to trim today was because I trim them myself because I keep them at 1.5" which most groomers don't have (she doesn't, because I asked last time). Interrupted me anytime I tried to talk, then actually hung up on me! When I called back she quickly (before I could say more than like 2 words) said I needed to talk to her husband because she was stressed (and appeared to be crying) - then said she thought we had stopped talking so that's why she hung up (I was literally mid-sentence when she hung up...). Later said phone disconnected (?). Talked to her husband and he was very polite and professional but kept saying he wasn't with her so didn't know what she was saying to me, tried to tell me she didn't expect she needed to do so much today, and tried to say my dog is "extremely matted" and needed to be buzzed down all over (see picture, very much not true! She did have some mats which I specifically told her at drop off she could spot remove if needed - I brush her literally 1-3 hours every Sunday, this breed has a thick coat and she's 2 so is active, she gets a mat like every 3 days). Told them not to do more and I was on my way to get my dogs if she didn't have time to do what I had scheduled with her today. He calls me back several more times with a new story each time for what she "meant to say", which seemed to be like he was damage controlling and trying to explain she apparently had surgery 2 days ago (so why are you caring for my dog right now...) and is "just really stressed" between the surgery and "how the day has gone." Tried to tell me she apparently was meaning to say that my dog's groom would just take longer than expected and needed more things? But at that point I did not trust them one bit, was not about to pay them MORE money for literally calling me a liar minutes before, and I just wanted my dog back because was concerned for their safety (if she was crying/yelling to me - how was she treating my dog when at a fairly new groomer?). If you can't control your emotions towards your (fairly new - this was our second visit, first with our second dog) human customers - how are you treating my dog behind closed doors? I'm sure our dogs were stressed just listening to her yell and cry at us. If she would have been emotionally controlled, professional, and not blaming, just professionally explained my dog needed more than expected - I would have gladly paid more for the care my dog needed or to schedule to bring her back because it's why I brought her to a groomer versus continue to do it all myself, but was not about to give more business after how she spoke to me (nor did I trust her with my dogs at that point). Woman was trying to tell me that if I picked my dog up early she was charging the full price anyways (!) and I had to wait to pick up the dogs - red flags. Also I'm sure my dog was scared (and in hindsight, other dogs were crying when we dropped dogs off) because the woman was literally yelling and crying on the phone to me. Tried to then say they will now do her nails for me today (?) - which felt like they wanted to get more money from me. And said to wait and they would call me in 25 minutes to come, to which I said to do no more, I just wanted my dog back and to rinse her off (apparently she was in the tub) and dry her as much as they could until I got there and was on my way. No apology at pickup. Strongly recommend NOT taking your dog here! This is probably the non-professional part of my review but I'm saying it to warn other dog parents - part of me actually wondered if some of their staff (including this woman) was on drugs (before we dropped the dogs off and had the above problems) - if this is true I genuinely hope they find support. My boyfriend had the same thought on a separate visit at this agency. I hope this woman finds the support she needs, but do not bring your dog here!!! See Google reviews - mine was 6th 1 star review in the last week. Edit; my dog has been not herself all day - stressed and sad, to point of whimpering during a nap. She's typically a spunky, always happy dog so am really concerned how she was treated today by this shop. read more

This place is absolutely terrible. unprofessional, have children work for them, they lie, abuse animals, the owner (Kait) won't even let you get a word in, she belittles you and yells at you. she half cut my dog and left him because there was a "medical Emergancy" then refused to take him back after saying she would finish him. he was in pain crying all night long for 2 nights. they made empty promises about fixing him then completely ignored me all day until I called the 10th time and that's when she said she wasn't doing it. I love the Dog Spaw! The owner takes such good care of our anxious dog. We started with the puppy cut, then got him completely shaved for summer and just got our third face and sanitary area trim and couldn't be happier. She really cares about how we maintain our Havenese Poodles fur and makes sure we brush him in between appointments which really makes it simpler for our dog which we appreciate. My dog, Higgs, wasn't the easiest for appointments one and two but by the third he napped there! What more could you ask than to leave your pet confident that they will be comfortable and come back looking super spiffy! Kate is in demand so make sure you call 2-3 weeks ahead to get your desired appointment day. I highly recommend the Dog Spaw! read more

I brought my golden retriever for the first time to the Dog Spaw. It was recommended by friends. Staff were very friendly when I arrived. I explained how I would like my dog trimmed and when I picked her up she looked absolutely fabulous. Couldn't be more happier with how the grooming turned out. The Dog Spaw is great! Our dog is very skittish and as a result has been cut a few times while being groomed other places. We took him to The Dog Spaw on the recommendation of a co-worker and can't imagine going anywhere else. He always looks (and smells!) great after trims at the Dog Spaw and he seems relatively calm (for being a crazy guy). AND he isn't nervous to go back. That is a HUGE win in my book and really speaks to the care he receives while he is there! Kate was recommended to me by my vet, who also uses her. I figured if she was good enough for my vet, she'd be good enough for me. My Shih Tzu is not well-socialized (my fault), but she seems to love Kate and has no problem going to the Dog Spaw. My previous groomer used to just take a razor to my Shih Tzu, Maggie, without any thought or style - the first time I brought Maddie to Kate, I was shocked when I picked her up. She actually looked like a show dog! My former groomer never even came close to making my previous Shih Tzu look as good as Kate makes Maddie look. My only regret is that I never brought Maggie to Kate. She's very knowledgable, she's great with the dogs, and she's extremely talented. I've found my life-time groomer. read more

Took our senior dog for a grooming. When we picked her up She could barely walk and has been unable to get up this morning. Do I think something happened to her at the Spaw? Yes, but no offer of explanation was offered aside from being told our dog was tired. The lady was acting very sketchy when my husband picked up our dog, like something happened. I have been bringing my sweet yorkie to the same place for 10 years and they just closed, so based on the positive reviews I decided to try The Dog Spaw in East Rochester. Wow is all I can say I literally have no words for what a heartless place this is! I used to love this establishment. NO MORE! They do not deserve your business. I stretched my tight budget to bring my dog there every 8 weeks. The young groomer was excellent, sweet and accommodating. Recently, I returned before my dog was ready. I was on my way back from a post-surgery appointment, and was in a rush because my disabled husband can't safely be left alone for long. I was told to leave so the dog could be groomed safely. I returned because of the 90 degree heat, and was told to leave again. The heat triggered a migraine, so I went home. By the time I returned, I had vertigo and nausea. The owner began explaining why I was told to leave previously, which I already understood. My terse response was, 'I had no choice, I just want to pay' so I could get home and lie down. She got upset I wouldn't let her finish and said, "have you ever been a groomer? I've been a groomer for 20 years." I desperately told her I didn't want to hear it, I've taken dogs to groomers for decades with no problems - I just wanted to pay. This angered her and she said sarcastically, "oh, you're a peach. I tried to be nice." Evidently she felt I was rude when in reality I was lucky to be standing and not vomiting on their floor. She then told me they would no longer groom my dog! I never raised my voice, I was not confrontational. I just wanted to pay, hurry home, help my husband, and lie down. I'm sad I can't continue with a great groomer because her boss was angry at a distressed customer who didn't act sufficiently understanding. I could barely contain my pathetic tears as I gave a final tip to the sweet groomer. Great grooming. Just don't insult them inadvertently or you will pay the price like I did. read more

The Dog Spaw provides great service at a reasonable price. I have been using this groomer for about a year now. In addition to doing a great job, the groomers were very kind to my high strung rescue pup. I explained to them in advance about her anxiety, and the groomers spent extra time with her and did a great job. My vet charges $30 to trim nails and express anal glans. At the Dog Spaw, those services are only $10. I have three rescue dogs and that is quite a savings. I now have a standing monthly appointment so that each of my pups gets a spaw visit every three months. read more

Ive never been guilt tripped more in my life by someone, especially someone I'm paying to do the job! Every time I bring my dog in I'm told how badly matted she is, one time they even brought her fur out after the services to show me how bad her mats were. Do they really think I'm oblivious to it? I brought her in to get rid of them! thats what I'm paying you for!! Every few visits the price seems to go up as well because of how bad the matts are, however why are you charging me more when your clearly not working on the matts and just taking a razor to her. I left in tears the most recent visit because the groomer kate was so rude to me and making me feel guilty and shaved my dog. she went on to tell me "I could have shaved her shorter would you have liked that?" there would be no reason what so ever to go even shorter then she did, let alone how short she did go! Maybe take time to actually brush her instead of immediately going for the razor. If I wanted to shave her I could easily go out and buy a electric razor and do that myself. IF I go back I will never use kate again.The only reason I will possibly go back is because my dog is familiar with the place and last time I tried to take her somewhere new my pup was scared out of her mind. She truly cares about dogs, she remembers each pet and it's individual needs.
