The Downtown Grill - a bar with red neons - American Near Me - Starke, Florida

This is the third Friday night my husband and I have spent here and the third time he had the New York Strip which is always cooked to medium rare perfectly. The live music again is wonderful and easy to carry on conversation. We did come here here during the week and sat at the bar. After ordering a Vodka martini the bartender admitted she was only eighteen and did not know what vermouth was, in fact, she was looking for it in the refrigerator with the juices!!! That is small town living!! Lol. Ordered vodka and grapefruit juice instead. read more

Visited Downtown Grill 10/13/18 on a Saturday night around 8pm. My group of 3 took a seat and waited sometime until initial drink order was taken. The service was slow but that was not the waitress' fault. It became clear that she was the only person working the floor of the whole bar side on her own at that time... including the bar. Upon noticing this, we decided we'd just need to be patient. There may have been 5 other tables occupied with a few people at the bar itself. There aren't many options in town for food and good alcoholic drinks. Fortunately, there was a talented singer/songwriter with an acoustic guitar entertaining the bar side. The sound carried well in the building and the audio wasn't "too loud". We could hear him well and talk to each other if needed. Back to the bar, they had a small but interesting selection on tap. I had Stella Cidre' and my companions had Sam Adams Oktoberfest. Both were a surprise on tap for me in this small town. Food order did take some time but it was hot and fresh upon arrival. Menu was mostly fried bar food but it's effective if done right. I had chicken fingers and fries. The chicken fingers were not compressed processed mystery meat. The fingers were whole strips of white meat chicken. They were delicious and juicy. My 2 companions were pleased with their orders of jalapeno poppers (not very spicy but tasty) and philly cheesesteak. It seemed like another worker did show up about an hour later so I hope the wait for service improved as the night went on. I just would've hoped an owner or manager would've pitched in more at a peak hour on a Saturday night to keep things flowing smoothly. The ambience was standard Southern Sports bar ( Nascar and football decor with beer branded neon lights) with prominent recognition for the US armed services. The place seemed very military and biker friendly. It could be a comfortable place to catch a game on tv. There is also a dining side to this establishment that I did not check out. Restrooms were clean and well stocked. I would go back on a day when i'm not in a hurry. read more

Two stars only because the food was decent. The service was terrible. The staff was polite they just took forever getting our order and getting our food to us. Not a big review writer but it was bad enough for me to take the time to write one for here. Not sure I'll give this place a second chance. You may have better luck if you are just sitting at the bar. read more

The food is decent average fare. Nothing to shout about. Not one dish I've had there had any original pizazz that can be talked about. The whole place could use a little more cleaning. Fun on trivia night, decent live music at times. read more

My husband and I just stopped here on the way to Tampa and we are pleasantly surprised by how good the food is!!!!

I went to this place with some coworkers for lunch last week. We were seated right away and the waitress was polite. I ordered the shrimp Alfredo and a side salad. When I got my side salad you could tell that the lettuce and tomatoes were old and tasted as much. When I finally received my shrimp Alfredo I noticed that the shrimp was extremely small and some of the shrimp still had the shells on them. The Alfredo source had no flavor at all. I complained to the waitress by telling her that this food was nasty. She apologized and still charged me for the meal that I didn't eat. I would stand clear of this place! read more

If you are traveling Route 301 North or South in Starke, Fl. and do not stop at the Downtown Grill you are missing a diamond in the rough! Great drinks, fantastic staff, wonderful and always changing menu, live music, and a true feeling of Southern hospitality, highlight your stop at the Grill! I recommend the Shotgun Shrimp and Ahi tuna but the entire menu is full of tasty appetizers and entrees. Our Armed services are treated to a free first drink and patriotism is alive and well at The Downtown Grill. So for a great, fun, and very tasty time do your tastebuds a favor and stop in for lunch or dinner at The Downtown Grill! read more

We happened upon this place while traveling with our dog so we needed someplace with a patio. There wasn't a lot of shade on the patio, but the food and service were great and the prices were very reasonable. read more

Our 3rd time visiting and worse than the previous 2. First let me start off by saying our server was friendly, seemed happy and greeted us promptly. The burger came out as ordered this time, med rare. ( our first 2 visits they were well done each time even after being sent back so at least that was an improvement). However, highly disappointed with the Reuben. Just 2 thinly sliced pieces of meat with cheese and very little sauerkraut, on two dry pieces of heavily toasted rye, with no thousand island dressing. We tried to get the attention of our server or another employee for at least a drink refill to try and wash it down but to no avail. We then went to the bar to ask for our check only to go back to the table and wait. Where the server apologized that she could hear us due to a party of 30 in the back dining room that was loud, although we never heard anyone and only saw another party of 2 as we were walking out. Overall friendly service in the beginning that led to a highly lackluster performance in the kitchen with cooks that just cant seem to get it right. Sad to say it will be quite awhile before we come back. Perhaps they will have changed kitchen staff by then and we ll have better luck. read more

Just went there. I was really looking forward to this, turned out to be the worst dining experience I've had in years. I love live music and the band was not bad, but I guess someone told them they were playing Dodger Stadium. If you have to yell your order to the waitress, you too god damn loud. Ordered a burger medium-well. They tried twice and still couldn't get it cooked. My waitress was hit or miss during the meal, then disappeared altogether. Found her outside polling people about her boyfriend drama. The opinion rings were great. That's the one star. I left with a head ache for a variety or reasons. Save yourself the trouble. read more

Good food & friendly service! We have driven past many times and it always looks busy. Tonight we tried it out. We had the corn nuggets for an appetizer, then a ribeye steak and Cajun pasta for dinner. We shared an excellent chocolate cake for dessert. Our only complaint was having to deal with a couple flies at the table. The food was good, the service was friendly. We recommend it! read more

Mediocre isn't quite the right word, but my time and brain case doesn't afford for the spatial awareness of a better adjective. Alexa (Tiffany) aka Monica also sometimes Amanda, is a legit bartender on Thursdays, but somewhat ineffective on days that end in "day". I would hope that she could navigate the subtle, but iconic differences between Mich Ultra and the delicious hues of Shock Top, otherwise known as the nectar of the citrus worshippers. Ultimately I'll be back because of proximity and the ability to pick my proper seating arrangement. However, I do expect to have my southern charm honored by a complimentary piece of Ally's zip code famous Pecan Pie. read more

I ordered a simple hamburger cooked medium and It came back burnt very well done. I ordered onion rings and got french fries. The waitress didn't act like she cared a whole lot, but brought me my onion rings anyway. The hamburger wasnt very big, but tasted okay even with all the burnt crust on it. The onion rings were good, but the fried batter was falling off the onion which means it was not prepared correctly. read more

Great food. Onion rings were hand battered and fresh and the blackened fish sandwich was super tasty. Service was very polite and friendly. Only downsides were lack of shade on back patio and they were out of several of the beers on tap. Very reasonably priced considering how delicious the food was. read more
