Purchased Ostrich feather duster and a pretty hand thrown white ruffled edge clay plant pot. I l o v e this oasis. The building and interior is a little spot in paradise and I always look forward to visiting and browsing. The owner is so very nice, and she wraps each item you purchase in such a special way. We spoke with the owner who was very nice, friendly, and engaging. I ended up purchasing a hand carved and painted wooden wall decoration made by "Joe." I enjoyed shopping there. I'm glad I stopped in and got a chance to purchase a unique souvenir and meet a very pleasant lady.

The worst, most dishonest experience we ever had. We purchased an antique frame with a painting,…read moreand the frame needed a little bit of repair. The person who said she owned the place, Deborah, offered to repair the frame so long as we left the purchase price. We gave her $200, and she said she would call us in a week or two to let us know we could pick it up. Not getting a call, we called her, and she said she had been sick or something and would get right to it. We called again a couple of weeks later, and we got the same story. Then, we called again and she told us that she "forgot" we had purchased it and sold it to someone else (imagine that !!), and that she would immediately refund us. We awaited the check, and it turned out to be the proverbial "check is in the mail." We called (when she picked up it was "oh, I'm sorry, I forgot, I'll get it out right away"), we wrote, we even had a lawyer send her a certified letter. Bottom line - we got stiffed, never saw a penny in refund. Run for your life from this "business." We wonder how many others she sold it to . . . at least now we know what "friendly gifts" really means. Gifts from us!

I fanned out on the boat when I heard that factoid and then later in the store - to my husband's amusement. (I grilled the two staffers who were working that evening about Nicolas Cage ) Scrimshanders is a small store, but it is packed with what you could get as unique souvenirs/gifts but also inventory for more serious collectors ($$$). As a personal trinket for myself, I bought a nautical knotwork bracelet. For my musician husband, I gifted him a whalebone guitar pick that had hand painted illustration on it; it was a perfect gift that would serve as a way for him to remember our first trip to Newport together.
