I visited the Duke the same week as the Yelp Elite event. I had such a great time that I had to visit again real soon! My husband and I came on a Friday in the late afternoon and the Duke wasn't busy at this point. We came for happy hour and I was ready for a cocktail and some yummy food! I would say around 6p it picked up quite a bit and had about a dozen plus or so guests either at the bar or the lounge area to the right. It was a bit awkward as the barmaid was being trained by one of the bartenders who were at the Yelp event. She was very nice but obviously she was training, so a little clumsy and we could hear some of the interactions between the two staff. I ordered gentlemen prefer blondes which was my favorite at the Yelp event. The barmaid took her time making it but I noticed she wasn't using the same glass as from the event and the drink was very clear and not the canary yellow color from before. I took a sip and it was too strong and tasted nothing like the drink I had a couple days before. I do not like to complain but I did say that this wasn't the drink I had at the Yelp event. The bartender then worked with the barmaid to figure out what happened and re-made the drink. The second drink I was provided was a carbon copy of the drink from the Yelp event. So, I was very happy!! The barmaid said the cocktail recipe had changed hence why she made a totally different drink. I will say that the drinks at the Duke are handcrafted and a lot of love is put into these drinks. From the decorations to mixology. Service was okay - the barmaid was absolutely trying but the service wasn't great. I felt like another worker was needed in order to take care of everyone. We wanted to order food but the two workers were always so busy making drinks and taking orders that it took a while to get their attention to order food. We ordered pigs in a blanket, crispy pastrami rolls, and crunchy grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato basil soup. The food came out hot and decently quick. Portion sizes are pretty good for happy hour. The grill cheese is huge and very thick bread and lots of cheese. I would say this was the largest portion size. The tomato basil soup had great flavor and the grill cheese tasted even better with the soup. The pigs in a blanket portion size wasn't great - maybe a whole dog was used but if you are really hungry then I would suggest getting two orders. My favorite was the crispy pastrami rolls - deep fried and stuffed with pastrami and cream cheese - hit the spot. I complained to my husband about how I had little service and the bartender overheard - he told me where/how to get wifi. He said the password is Guestp and sure enough the wifi worked perfectly. Single stall bathrooms are down the hallway and to the left. Gorgeous bathroom with the tile and it doesn't feel like a hotel bathroom whatsoever. Beautiful décor, swanky, but also welcoming is how I would describe the Duke. I think once the kinks are worked out with service this place will really be an excellent place for a drink and a bite to eat. Who would've thought it is the hotel bar?! read more

Last night I paid a visit to The Duke and boy am I glad I did. The ambiance was top notch with gorgeous backdrop to the bar, ample seating and relaxing areas with your choice of a fireplace or glamorous lighting overhead. The bartenders were courteous, informative and not bad on the eyes either :) I let the bartender know that I really don't drink that much and when I do I prefer wine but that I wanted to try something different. I left it to the bartender's discretion and he made me a fun, sweet, not too stark in taste, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. I loved it! He added a nice wedge of lemon, which I used to improve the taste, and a pinch of dry ice to add drama to the drink. The bar had a wide selection of drinks to choose from sure to please any adult pallet. Down the hall is a sparkling clean restroom. On both sides of the bar are inviting lounges. This is the ideal place to meet-up for business, friends or just to unwind. read more

Please bring them back. 5 stars for the customer service (the bartender was very nice to explain the new menu etc and rushed to take our order; thank you). Also thanks to the bartenders having to endure random guests long rants about gun control and not wearing a mask.. I couldn't ever listen to that and be sane. PLEASE BRING BACK THE PIGS IN A BLANKET. I never tried them but I know they are good. Also 5 stars because I've stayed at the doubletree for awhile and noticed that they take off all the bottles off of the shelves every single night and restock them every morning. That's really A+ effort for the staff doing that and lining each bottle in the same place. read more

The Duke lounge is the bomb!!! From the time that I talked the mgt staff on the phone I was greeted w superb service. The staff is so accommodating and so nice I couldn't ask for better service. I brought a group here for one of our events and they let me reserve the lounge area for cocktails. I was able to choose from three rooms which I thought was very nice to have options. We chose the colorful room where you can walk downstairs. It was an absolute delightful and lovely night! There was a birthday party going on so we had a lot of entertainment around us. The bartending staff was awesome because they brought our drinks down to us which we all thought was great service. I will definitely come here again for another event, maybe a birthday party. I really enjoyed my night here, the drinks are good, and they even came down to the lounge to serve our drinks to us. Chad, by far is one of the most awesome bartenders, servers, customer service person I have met!! Parking is free. You drive in, turn left, and park in the lot. Joe Muers is on the rt side of the venue in case you want to grab dinner. We ordered cocktails off the menu at around $13 each. There's also valet service in front of the hotel. Based on the YELP ratings we made our way through the hotel parking lot and back door; but found "the Duke" to be completely empty on a Friday "Happy Hour." No patrons, no bar tender except for a guy trying to find a bottle for room service. Is this really a venue? This place has a lot of very modern feel/ design to it, as much as a hotel bar can have. Now I'm a local so I wasn't staying at this hotel but we went for a birthday drink for a friend, just to see what it was about. It's literally right inside the hotel front door, almost as if they turned a common newsstand into an overpriced mini lounge. The ambiance is cool; very dark, loungy, cigar bar- esque minus the smoke. I don't think it's the type of place you'd actually find "The Duke" if he were still alive though so maybe the name isn't quite right. Maybe call it "The Duchess"? Seems more avant garde and apropos for its scene. Menu is kind of limited but upper crust. Louis XIII for $5k readily available, along with some mixed cocktails featuring flowers and orange peel roses. You can also order food from the delicatessen across the hall when it's open, which looked pretty good. Joe Muir is down the hall so bring a blazer to pay for overpriced scallops, and then sit back, relax in the ultra lounge down the stairs with multicolored cushioned love seats and piano, serviced by The Duke. I bellied up to the bar and had the Makers Mark based "Duke Himself" which is a glorified old fashioned. Pretty tasty but overly decorated with a cherry and a giant ice cube and orange peel shaped flower. That's a $15 drink right there for about a shot of liquor. Service was ok; bar staff wasn't overly friendly, as if cracking a smile was too difficult at 10 pm with no one there. At least they could rack a drink and hold a conversation for a bit about themselves. I was more impressed with the hotel than the bar itself. A salt water pool, very modern and clean decor, large banquet room... great renovation. I'd stay here if it wasn't in a weird place, north of Royal oak/ Birmingham and south of Pontiac. Not sure what business you have in the area but hey, that's your business. Overall, if you're looking for a cocktail bar, go to sugar house in Detroit or Johnny's in RO. More of a bar and less of that hotel vibe. I give the hotel credit though! read more

What a hidden gem. I was looking for a place to meet some friends and luckily found The Duke. Don't let the fact this is a hotel bar turn you off: it has excellent drinks, food, and plenty of places to hang out. I travel to many cities and stay at many 5 star hotels... this bar stands above and beyond most. First the ambiance is great, good music and great vibe. Decor is on point. The best part of the Duke are the bartenders. Very courteous and attentive. They know how to make a drink and go out of their way to accommodate your needs. As I was sitting at the bar a request came in for fresh squeezed orange juice and even though the bar was busy, Francesca made time to make to complete the request while not ignoring the rest of the patrons. The setting is magnificent with beautiful furniture and accent pieces.We had the Once Upon A Time In Mexico Cocktail and it was delicious. We ended up buying two bottles to celebrate.
