Every time I come here, there's a babe behind the bar no matter what time of day (including Darren). They have a good selection of music on their jukebox. Billiards to take peoples money. Baseball on the TVs. I have the best time of my life, every time. Leaving here sauced up and fully torqued, there's nothing like it here at The Elwood

    Cheers friends

From the start, our server was inattentive and seemed completely dismissive when we mentioned we were celebrating a birthday. There was no acknowledgment at all, which made the occasion feel overlooked. To make matters worse, on a Friday night they were out of all draft beer, which was surprising for a restaurant and bar that promotes its tropical cocktails and lively atmosphere. Dessert was the biggest letdown. The mango sticky rice was honestly one of the worst versions we've ever had--poorly prepared and lacking flavor. The chocolate cake was so dry that it was practically inedible. The tropical décor and hidden tiki speakeasy "X" are interesting concepts, but the poor service and disappointing food overshadowed what should have been a special birthday celebration. We left feeling let down and will not return.

The inside has a nice jungle/plant vibe -- warm, inviting decor that feels intentional without being overdone. Service stood out right away. Our waiter was attentive and checked in often without hovering. I ordered the Pupu Platter during happy hour, and it's a smart move if you want variety. It's just enough food for one and gives you a sampling of different menu items. The Korean-style wings had good flavor and just the right level of spice, though I wish they were a little crispier. The sliders were straightforward -- nothing groundbreaking -- but well made and satisfying. Fries came out crispy, which I always appreciate. My wife had the poke nachos, and those were the sleeper hit. I was skeptical about the pico at first, but it actually added depth and balance. The sauce tied everything together nicely. We also ordered a mocktail and one of their signature drinks, and both were well crafted. Overall, a great dinner with good energy, solid execution, and attentive service. A few small tweaks could push it to five stars, but we'd definitely come back.

Tender Hooligan has been in business since 2024 and it's known for its unique blend of high-fidelity vinyl listening, specialty coffee, craft beer, and cocktails. The audiophile cafe and bar is located next door to La Pesca Cevicheria on Third Ave. We had a 45 minute wait time for dinner at La Pesca and ordered a few drinks while we waited for table. Tender Hooligan functions as a community hub with a record store, themed spaces, and events like live music and game nights, offering a cozy, eclectic atmosphere for working, socializing, or enjoying music. The menu features unique drinks like the Ube Espresso and Jeepney Latte, alongside food and a selection of soju cocktails. I ordered a beer michelada. It's such a fun hangout check it out!!

We got everything in it, and added avocado for $1. The peperoncini was free to add on the side. The sandwich was yum, but for $7, it is the best I've ever eaten. Service: 4.5/5 The person who took our order was so kind, offering us water when we didn't order any drinks and making sure we needed nothing else while we ate. Atmosphere: 4.5/5 It's so so cozy in here! I think it turns into a bar after dark, and the place is the right ambiance for both AM and PM. It was decently packed, and there are games to borrow! I would recommend this place for a casual lunch, a coffee run, or a third-space hang out. Amazing, no notes. Final rating: 4.67/5 (rounding up to 5 on Yelp)

There's cool Mexican art on the wall and table was clean and wiped down. There's not too big of a menu and what they have is made really well. The chips and salsa were good. I like how light the chips are. The free salsa had more and better flavor than the red, but both are good. I got El Bàsico burrito and it was like how I used to eat it growing up when my parents would make it for me. I asked for a side of the poblano salsa they use for the chilaquiles and it was so good! It became with a side of plain crema. I left full and happy! My wife got a Quesataco with a side of frijoles and papas. The taco had a lot of meat and was super tasty. They gave you a small side of consume and that didn't disappoint either. The papas didn't have too much flavor but were nice and crispy. The beans were my wife's favorite. They have a slight kick and bomb flavor. I'm glad to have this place in our neighborhood and I look forward to coming back again!

Stay for the unexpected talent!…read more As my girlfriend & I walked the chilly, quiet Sunday night streets of Downtown Chula Vista, as enamored couples do, we came across La Patrona (The Lady Boss to my non-Spanish speaking amigos). "Is...is that people singing," she asks. "Oh, my dear it is," I chimed back. We had been talking about going to karaoke about 2 streets prior. Destiny, like when you wonder why it's never worked before, but now, everything is clear. Right off the bat, this place is as bare bones a bar that you will see. And that's a good thing. I don't mind no flair, but the drinks better be good. And they did not disappoint. The drinks were great. I got the Mexican Candy (think I'll be calling my GF that also) & she had the Skinny Margarita. We thought about food, but were too busy enjoying the semi-pro karaoke performers belt out the ballads. That did not stop us, however, from signing up post haste! My girl can saaaang! The service was stealthy. And we believe we were sitting next to La Patrona herself, which we may have to revisit to make sure. They do have food, but hard to sing with a full belly. All in all, it was a fun unexpected night with my baby, when we would have just been sitting at home watching tv. What better way to spend an evening than crooning words of love to each other, while tossing back some refreshing drinks?! TL:DR - Cozy bar lit dim. Order drinks between singers. We found so much more than that. The burgers were outstanding, the drinks were ice cold (exactly what we needed on a hot day), and the service was exceptional. As we were leaving, the manager stopped to ask how everything was and when we'd be back. We told him we might return to SD the following Tuesday if we win the game the next day. That's when things got interesting. He smiled and said, "You're going to win tomorrow, and when you do, come back Tuesday and dinner is on me." Then he went one step further and predicted the final score: 6-4. My wife laughed and asked, "By the way... what's your name?" He replied, "Angel." Fast forward to game day. It was an absolute nail-biter. Late in the game, the score was tied in extra innings when our son stepped up to the plate and ripped a line drive to center field, driving in the two winning runs. Final score... 6-4. We couldn't believe it. Whether Angel has a crystal ball or was simply sending us off with some incredible encouragement, we'll never forget that experience. It's one of those stories our family will be telling for years. The Balboa South earned our business because of the delicious food and outstanding customer service. The unforgettable prediction was just the icing on the cake. If you're looking for amazing burgers, genuine hospitality, and maybe a little good luck before your next big event, this is the place to go. Thank you, Angel, for making our family's baseball tournament one we'll never forget.
