I eluded to things that my mom and step dad were saying about this place in my last review. Stress was high and trying to find a place to care for my mom seemed to be the hardest part of this journey. This place is in a nice area and it is nestled in the woods where you feel removed from your everyday stress. As my mom stayed here, both her and my step dad were complaining. They like to complain anyways so I took it with a grain of salt. This was our only option to take her at the time. This is the only place in town with a bed at the time. I gave my family a heads-up that this place good care of my neighbor, Doug about 10 years ago and it seemed like a gem at that time. I thought this place was going to be beautiful for my mom to stay and live out her final days. The more I dug into the allegations, the more I learned. The place is not very clean when you look around, that isn't a secret. We just wanted good care for my mom. My mom was placed on the lower level where it was very cool. With my mom losing about 120 lbs in the last year, she gets cold easily. She was cold in her room. It was a crisp 64 degrees. My step dad asked to increase the temperature of the room, they said they would try. The AC units ran all the time. The AC units were also plugged up with debris. They still kept the place cool but seemed to run non-stop. They were putting so many blankets on my mom to fight the coolness that my mom complained of the weight of all of the blankets on her feet and legs. We asked if we could bring in a heater, heated blanket or anything else to warm her room. They told us that we couldn't. What they are saying is there is no solution to my mom feeling like she is freezing, so she will have to deal with it. The people seemed friendly and caring. I am not sure if it is strictly a staffing deficiency or just not a good system in place. They tied to remember my mom's birthday, got her some cup cakes and then they didn't give her any. They seem to staff with 1 person upstairs and 1 person downstairs but many times when you are looking for any assistance, it seemed like no one was available and you would have to look through the entire house looking for help. My mom would press the button for help and she would get a response in about 45 minutes. That seems to be a long time but i know they have other people to tend to. The meals were made and served but they seemed to always be cold for my mom. We took my mom to the U of M for an appointment because the nurses could not find transportation to the clinic any other way. This is their business, don't you have a list of providers? Is this the first time that you needed to transport someone laying down? There were several things that exposed lack of procedures and nobody seemed to be in-charge. When we were at the appointment, every person we saw, were told the horrors of this place and the stay from my mom and step dad. I asked the social worker to help us look for another option. They decided to hold her for a couple days while we tried to get her into another place. We were close to getting her into an assisted living but they said they couldn't care for her there. We were back to square one. The hospital didn't want to give up a bed to her anymore. We were forced to move her back to The Lodge until we could figure something else out. We explained to my mom that we had no choice even though she begged us not to send her back there. It was sad. She arrived back at the lodge around dinner time on a Friday. They fed her and after that, I guess she started to throw up non-stop. I get a call around 11:30pm telling me that she has been throwing up since she arrived and ate dinner. They were asking ME what to do. I said call an ambulance, what do you normally do? My mom was not on Hospice care until the next day I guess and that changes the rules. They seemed to have waited too long to get her help. I could hear my mom yelling in the background to get her out of there, it broke my heart. It was the last fight my mom put up and after that it was a fast downhill slide. I started to look more into the things they were telling me. I found that many medical professionals like hospice nurses say The Lodge used to be good but now they wouldn't let them watch their dog. How sad. My step dad said that when he would try to call there, they wouldn't answer or if you followed the prompts, you didn't get a person. He is hard of hearing and can't hear his cell phone too well. I decided to try and I followed the prompts only to find that I also couldn't get through to anyone. I believe that is a problem. I would be leery of staying here. May my mom not haunt me for putting her here. We finally got my mom moved to a VERY nice place in Edina.

So glad my mom escaped their cult-like prison safely. They actually told me that Red Robin would be her home permanently. Then they pulled a stunt saying it would be shut down and moved her to the more expensive house to steal her money. The other house never shut down and the other 2 residents my mom lived with still live there. They wanted my mom's money. Thank you to the Guardian and the Ombudsman. You saw their true colors. My mom is free and safe and I get to love on her non-stop. The staff at her new facility are amazing and so understanding and loving. Night and Day Difference! Stay away please!

I do not recommend this place for your family as far as communication and med issues as well. the social worker is suppose to be supportive and on your side when these issues arise instead they turn their heads to this! I have made reports! not great if you want to get answers, you have to figure them out yourself And fight for your family members no one else will!!! this is horrible so much stress to go through when all you want to do is spend that energy on your sick mother! I'm sad for my mom to have to go through what she endured I was the only one to save her from harm. You trust your family with compassionate people and that's not always the case so sad! She was heavily over medicated on morphine! Than told me she was actively dying which she was not and giving last rights because we thought we were near the end when she was over medicated! My loved one walked into Gianna's on his own 2 feet (an important distinction), with the idea that…read morehe was going to get more focused attention and individual care because of a smaller ratio of residence to staff. Our family was told there would be active interaction with the residence, music therapy and other therapeutic methods that would be used to achieve the proposed individualized/focused care. The actual result is that NOTHING could be FARTHER FROM THE TRUTH! The REALITY is that immediately after moving in, while our loved one was getting adjusted to a new place, people and surroundings in the first few days, the immediate course of action from the Gianna's staff was to medicate him to the point of extreme sedation, so that he did not disturb the staff! This sedation was to the point of him being asleep in the chair all day every day and not moving, not eating and inability to be mobile when he had just walked into the place days earlier. At the direction of the Gianna's nurse, the staff issued PRN meds (as needed med's) automatically when they were not needed. He was in the chair asleep in the chair, and they continued to issue sedating medications. This was so severe, that one time I walked at dinner time and our loved one was laying on the floor with the staff walking around him, like nothing was wrong. Not helping him up or attempting to help him. The staff did not exhibit any compassion or attempt to find alternative solutions. This continued. Simultaneously NONE of the therapeutic methods promised happening. I am not saying this lightly as someone who was hearing this from afar. I witness this firsthand as I was there 22 of 28 days he was in Gianna's. This persisted and he did not come out of nor was able to recover from the extreme sedated state the Gianna's nurse and team put him. He paid the ultimate price died 28 days after entering Gianna's. Save your loved one! DO NOT believe what they tell you! DO NOT PUT YOUR LOVED ONE IN GIANNA'S. They too may pay the ultimate price like my loved one did! PS: As someone who was there nearly daily, I observed that of the following: Of the 14 residents at Gianna's ONLY 1 person was mobile on her feet and verbal. ALL others were confined to a wheelchair, nonverbal and appear to be sedated with no movement, verbal or physical interaction with staff. This was observed throughout many different shifts. My dad lived at Gianna for only 28 days: from the first day when he walked in on his own 2 feet…read more(able to ambulate, eat, and interact) to the day he passed away. We moved to Gianna because we were promised low staff to resident ratio, more individualized care, a "medication last" approach, experienced staff and a warm environment that treated residents like family. While the ratio was as promised, I felt the care, staff competency and medication approaches were not. Often, I found my dad sitting alone, in the corner, unable to move or open his eyes from sedation. With drool down his cheek and leftover food on his face. He would often have globs of liquid medicine in his mouth from staff trying to give medication while he is unresponsive to verbal commands and touch. I would often find him in this state with no interaction from staff leaving me to advocate for his needs. We felt like outsiders and an inconvenience. This was not the care I was promised. We had multiple instances of their staff not following hospice medication orders. We witnessed staff administer anxiety medication labeled for as-needed use when my dad was already so sedated that he was unresponsive. I was able to intervene while present, but who knows how much extra, unneeded medication was given when I wasn't. It was also administered incorrectly. Instead of administering sublingually (as stated on the medical order), they were dissolving the meds and shooting them down his throat with a syringe. This is incorrect and can be very dangerous especially if the person cannot swallow as medication can be forced into the lungs. I believe this was occurring as my dad would often cough after being given medicine this way. There was an instance where the doctor ordered a stop to a medication, yet staff continued to administer it for four days! For four days my dad was given discontinued medication IN ADDITION to the medication that replaced it. The head RN at Gianna locked the medication in a cabinet in her office to prevent staff from continuing to administer it. Apparently, she was not confident enough in her staff to be able to verbally tell them not to give this medication. When my dad was bedridden at end-of-life stages and NEEDED this medication, it couldn't be accessed. This caused a 2.5-hour delay while we waited for the medication to arrive. If that wasn't bad enough, once the medicine arrived, staff administered the medicine incorrectly. My dad began vomiting and choking after a few doses. We immediately alerted staff. There was no urgency by them to help which is VERY alarming in this type of situation. I would hate to see what would have happened if he was alone during this episode. After alerting the hospice nurse of what occurred, she had to call Gianna's staff to educate them on how to give medication sublingually as written in the medication orders. After the medication was given correctly, relief was seen almost immediately. I believe that none of the prior doses were effective due to incorrect administration. All this to say there was so much prolonged and unnecessary suffering that took place because of mistakes that should never have happened at a facility of this caliber. Sublingual medication at end-of-life stages is extremely common. It was shocking to me that their "experienced" staff were not familiar with how to give medication this way. These events support my experience of lack of competence and compassion within the staff and lack of proper RN oversight/direction. Medication mistakes are unacceptable and can be life threatening. This was far from the end-of-life experience I wanted for my dad and family. It certainly was not the experience I expected given what was advertised to me and the price that came along with it. While I should have been focused on enjoying what little time I had left with my dad, I felt forced to monitor staff to ensure they were performing care properly, giving the right medications, and administering medications correctly. I feel robbed of this time. The only silver lining is that my dad and family didn't have to suffer through the poor care and experience of this facility for long. Although our stay was brief, the damage caused by this facility was large. If you care for your loved one and the end-of-life experience you have with them, I recommend you steer clear of this facility.
