Apparently, this store has the largest selection of scale model kits in Virginia. In ALL of Virginia. This. In this Uber-small town of Staunton. I found brands from USA, Japan, China, Italy, and other countries. There's also planes, boats, cars - just about any model kit you can imagine. This is pretty much a model kit store of the dreams - primarily for adults that are into the hobby. Surprised to find this, and found an Italian model kit that isn't even sold online, and at a good value - SOLD!

If you are looking for a certain card in the sports world, there's a good possibility they have it...but plan on paying for it. I gauge card shops by the price of the current boxes they offer - they had the hard to find 24 Optic Football blasters & Mega boxes but the blasters were priced at $75 and the Megas were $120. Even the Topps Celebration Megas were well over priced at $149.95. If I need to waste some time, I may stop back by to look thru one of their many boxes of cards but won't be a regular.

nice little mom and pop shop in central Virginia directly on the beaten path but still a…read moresignificant ways out of the way regardless. after dropping the cutest of chicks off at CLT to go to FLA I have the rest of the afternoon to try to stay out of trouble... it's just a couple hours to get here and I get to meet some new faces and go roundy round for a couple bucks. the raceway is currently housed in a simple building on highway 460 just west of Appomattox with SLOT CAR RACING spelled out in 24-inch letters. yeah, totally subtle... current tracks include road, oval, and straight line. I will generally drive the road courses when I'm out because it's all driver-vs-track with up to seven other contests going on at roughly the same time... high banks mean high speed and the Gerding King road course is both. even the main straight is tilty! thought my car was going to slide off the track when I set it down on orange; it was moving sort of slideways and hanging on the guide as I started my first lap because the tilt is that aggressive! felt totally out classed and way out of my league for a long minute... but that brief bit of uncertainty makes Mach 1 stand out for me and the need to stay fast all the way around builds character - the skill part is knowing when to "fast" and when to brake. drags and ovals are generally better with a couple other racers to taunt and tease and are usually populated by a dedicated and friendly group on race day. circle track racers are a peaceful and happy people, but like all 'cults' it can take up a good deal of your time and resources ;-) Mach 1 has what it takes to get you on the track and keep you there: they have rentals to get you started or you can pick up ready to drive or build-it-yourself cars in your choice of styles and colors, plus parts and accessories to personalize whatever it is you decide to run. I have a basic factory built that can mostly keep up. I'm not likely to win any serious competition but I'm on the track here and there and elsewhere primarily for the adventure...

Hobby Shops. Remember them from your childhood? I sure do. I thought they were gone for good…read more But they aren't! There's one in Rockville that's exactly like you remember it. RC Cars! Toy Trains! Model Kits! And all the other art sets, car tracks, European and Japanese toys and "Stuff." You know how a modern store just has people behind the counter? Hobby Works has staff walking the floor to help you. And they really help. And they know their stuff. And when you're there, it's got that friendly clubhouse atmosphere like you stopped off here while walking home from school in the 6th grade. Sometimes it feels like with online shopping, kids won't ever experience the friendly local stores like we did. Not while Hobby Works is open, it's all modern, but it's a shopping experience that most stores lost over the years- and our kids deserve to experience that friendliness.

I'm not coming back because of your lack of customer service (see the other one star reviews)…read more I came in last month to have a portrait framed. No escalator running up, only elevator, which was occupied. This is a problem for your handicapped customers. When I returned today the up escalator still wasn't working - so this is apparently "regular" service. YOu, Michael's, chose to be on the second floor in this mall. So YOU, Michael's need to keep your escalators running. When I came in six weeks ago, the service at your custom framing desk could NOT have been less helpful. Two men behind the counter were arguing (see other one-star post about custom framing employees being angry at each other). I stood waiting while they finished their spat and finally noticed me (invisible woman over 60 problem?). The young male who "attended me" was clearly new and didn't have a clue what was going on. He told me that frames the size I wanted could only be had custom. I told him he was wrong, that they could be ordered online - from Michael's. He didn't get it. I explained again that MICHAEL'S had it in stock online. He didn't get it. So I unnecessary ordered a "custom" frame I could have ordered online just to get the matter done. I never got a call back telling me the item was done so had to call myself. The explanation was a flood in the store, etc. No apology. So I returned to pick up today. First was the ongoing escalator problem. Second was in absentia workers. I went up and down the paper aisle looking for Japanese rice paper. Never found it. Not one person was available to help me find it. Two employees were dithering at the front desk. Went to custom framing. No one is there but a senior citizen couple. After about four minutes I asked them if there was someone working. They said they thought so but she had disappeared in the back. We waited longer. I finally hit the button for nonattendance which said "buzz here we will happily assist you". No one happily assisted us. The woman finally showed up. She couldn't help the senior citizen couple. They had nine small frames in front of them. They asked for a bag. She said she didn't have one (but didn't try to get one, either, or call the front) and left these poor people stuffing nine frames in their pockets. Unbelievable. My turn wasn't much better. She clearly doesn't want to work. At one point she muttered something and I said "were you addressing me? I can't hear you" and she had telling me to sign a receipt. She opened both orders (apparently upon instruction) without a comment so you learn you have to say "that's fine" I even had to ask if I owed Michael's anything. I didn't. I then asked her where Michael's might have rice paper. She said she "didn't know - it's out there if we carry it". Didn't offer to call the front desk. So I left (two employees at front desk were still on their phones) and checked - yes, Michael's does carry rice paper for $25.00++. I went on Amazon and ordered it for $3.99. This is why your store is failing.

Was driving through Strasburg, VA on U.S. 11 - and Strasburg Hobbies caught my eye…read more Stopped in to check out the place. They have several interesting and somewhat unique elements that I've not encountered at other hobby shops: (1) They have constructed a steep rock adorned grade to radio controlled cars and trucks to attempt to navigate; (2) They have a long dedicated drag strip for side-by-side drag strip racing; (3) There is a large oval slot car track in the back for slot car racing. Not sure what the size/gauge cars the track is for. It's clearly for larger than AFC style/size cars. Looked to see what they had in the way of O-gauge train cars. They don't currently stock much of that - but they offered up that they can order stuff, The guy running the place was nice. Cool shop! Check them out! #StrasburgHobbies

The owners are fantastic and very attentive not just to what mom and dad are looking for, but their engagement with our young son. Cool little hobby shop in Old Towne Warrenton, VA!\…read more I was looking for some very specific O-gauge model train set related stuff - but at the time - they did not carry a lot of product in that area. In addition to the various hobby shop related wares - there are lots of neat little bits to the store - a miniature old school pinball machine; a little red wooden wagon mounted on the wall; upstairs on a door - a sign that painted with the words: "The Speakeasy," harkening back to an earlier time when a previous business conducted wine tastings and such upstairs at this location.
