We just had a gas log set and burner installed to convert our unused wood burning fire place to gas. The process was absolutely perfect and seamless. Lindsay was super responsive to my emails and helped me pick out the unit we wanted at their San Carlos showroom. She helped us decide with Ryan what option was the right fit based on heat output and intended use. She also arrived promptly at our home to measure and take pictures. The recommended plumber for the gas line install did impeccable work drilling through a very challenging metal firebox. This was one of the easiest home improvement projects we've tackled and it makes such a difference to the ambiance of our family room. We're using the fireplace daily now and are so thrilled with it. It's so nice to find a local company with an outstanding reputation that keeps all appointments and deadlines. I can't recommend them and this gas conversion highly enough. I spoke with Nikki today for an urgent service call on my DaVinci 72x20 single sided fireplace which was installed in early 2016. I have a friend visiting for 10 days and have been checking everything to make sure certain items are in good working order. I live at the Coast and the salt air and other elements in nature make appliances have shorter working lives. Nikki was able to squeeze me in on short notice due to another cancellation and as I was waiting for the service technicians I kept trying to turn on the unit which I could not get to turn on the night before. Finally it kicked in and started up (may have been a spider in the line or by the starter). Nikki graciously cancelled my service charge for 2 techs ($375) and we discussed future service plans when I'm not so harried. Energy House installed a great device and it's been working well for 8 years - I do need to turn it on more frequently to keep it in tip top working order and she gave me some helpful advice. They are a high quality business that is there for it's customers long beyond the initial purchase and installation. My contractor only used the best vendors for this very reason! read more

I can't recommend them more highly. Fireplace was delivered and installed correctly and on time. Unfortunately, the installers of the uneven surface wave tile surround did not follow the directions for tiling around the fireplace insert. There was an unsightly gap around the fireplace. After describing and emailing pictures to Frank to see if he could recommend a fix, he made a personal visit, as it was hard to see the full problem through the pictures. He concluded that they could provide a solution. A new surround was stalled today and it is a perfect solution. The error was not Energy House's fault, but our tile companies'. However, Frank took ownership. He didn't have to and I know it was more of a nuisance than it was worth to them, but they never made me feel like I was a nuisance; he took it seriously. I had bought a fireplace from them in 2008 and all went well. Even helped me correct a starting issue I had over the phone Fast forward today. My daughter remodel her house and we replaced a wood fireplace with a gas one. They customer service is not what it used to be 1. Frank was not helpful He fouled up the order three time. Fireplace arrived without the extra two fans 2. Fan arrived but only one 3. Had to call for second fan 4. In the meantime my contractor recommend a different fan. So I called Frank, he was very rude and said there would be a 15 percent return charge and I said fine and then he hung up on me Installation of fireplace The installers were good. They did break a few tiles on the roof installing the fireplace cap. I do not think they know how to walk on tiles so they do not break. Finish installation I told my contractor about my problems and his comment was interesting. He said he used to use them but because of his experiences he no longer uses them. I am in an HOA and in the past I have recommend the Energy House. But no longer. In fact just yesterday I had one of our owners asked me about Energy House and I did not recommend them. Gosh I wish they could get their act together but based upon the past reviews it does not seem like they are taking the Yelp reviews seriously Some things went well but things should go well and did not. Today the chimney cap came off after a few months. I bought anew chimney cap an installed it. After looking at the cap they did not even screw it on. Know wonder it blow off As I indicated in a past review the guys broke three tiles when they were on the roof and I had to hire someone to repair the tiles. One problem is these guys were very heavy and did not know or care about how you wail on a tile roof. We had a great experience initially - the sale itself was a five star experience. However, we had our own guy install the unit, and we had to order a face-plate that was going to take a few days. So we were depending on the contractor being able to make some phone calls to Energy House further down the line. Our sales lady told us she'd have no problem with that and walk us through it. Unfortunately, perhaps due to overload of work at Energy House, our contractor was waiting two days for a response to messages. When he did get the sales lady on the phone, she was very knowledgeable and very helpful. I cannot criticize that, and I am grateful for her help. But having a guy sitting there waiting that long for a phone call before he can proceed with getting materials for a job is sort of an issue. There seemed to be an implication that she'd be available during business hours if we needed anything at all, and in fact that was unrealistic. I wish we had known that, because then we would have placed calls earlier or worked around it. We had our own contractor do the job because a) we trust him and b) we had him install the new gas line for this fireplace insert so it made sense for him to do the connections and finish the job. Energy House was very good about making sure to have the contractor's name on the pickup information. And they were thoroughly understanding about the size of our fireplace. The opening of our fireplace was sized between the larger fireplace insert and the smaller one, and it was unclear which one was going to fit, so we started with the large one. Ironically, the insert fit perfectly but the insert face attachment required us to grind out an extra inch of marble to get it on there (not too cool in my book, actually, but that's Lopi's design issue). Unfortunately, the installation instructions included with the unit were terrible. The dimensions listed were wrong on the hose clamps and several other items. It seemed like generally these were for a different unit or an older unit and yet were still included, unrevised, for this unit. I don't think that's Energy House's fault (it's Lopi's) but it would have saved us some trouble if they had warned us, or our contractor, to look for inconsistencies. Those poor instructions cost a couple of hours' worth of repeat trips to the local hardware store. At $45 per hour, that's really not cool. Plus, how difficult would it have been for Energy House to include 4 proper hose clamps at $1.50 each? The unit itself cost over $3K. But it did not come with the small screws, nuts, bolts or clamps required to install it. Even IKEA includes that stuff... Also, when the face plate did come in to the store, I had to call the Energy House to find out about it. They did not call me at any stage on that. I called to confirm it had been ordered, confirm that it was on its way, and to confirm its arrival. None of these phone calls were Energy House initiative. They had my email address and could have dropped me a line anywhere along the way as an FYI. But they didn't. Again, there is this sales implication of "hey, we're totally on it" but really, they can't deliver on that implication. It'd be better if they told me up front that I would need to call and follow up with them. All that said, I love the gas insert. I love the way it looks and the way it runs. We are happy with our purchase. We would send friends to Energy House, but perhaps with the caution that getting someone's attention after the sale might take a little work. They were really good about working through the issues of our particular situation, so they get 4 stars instead of 3, but they would have 5 stars from me if they had done a better job managing expectations of their availability. read more

This place is complete garbage and scam artists. DO NOT SHOP HERE! Worked with sales guy Frank, who sold me a complete fireplace insert unit with installation. Had the installers perform the installation, which took months to get scheduled. Upon their installation into our brand new house, and finally trying to use it when they were completed, there was no way of turning it on, nor did they leave any instructions in how to do so. When I called Frank back up, I find out that the installers never completed the installation stating that there was a damaged screen and missing remote control. Frank then tells me that I will have to buy these pieces in order to complete the installation?!? Bear in mind that the house is brand new, never lived in and no one has touched any of the fireplace unit equipment, except for the installers. read more

When we went in, Christian helped us look at a few inserts. Then Frank came to do the measurements a few days later, and to give the quote. Well then after that, everything went downhill due to the lack of communication between Frank and the rest of the guys at the shop which resulted in delays, wrong parts/faces being ordered etc., mulitple visits out to my home. By the time we had it fully installed and functioning, it took about 6-8 weeks - even though Jorge and his guys did their best! Then the unit started acting up so thanx to Alan's help and understanding, a new control unit needs to be installed. I purchased the Fireplace X high end unit in October. I had a good knowledgeable saleslady, Stacie, and received good installation services. Installers arrived and finished the job on time. The custom sized fireplace surround would come in a couple weeks. I had a problem right away with the controller as the installer noted. The service folks came out right away even though Thanksgiving was upon us. They replaced the controller (a common unit used my many other fireplace vendors) and all is well. I am very happy with my fireplace insert as the weather turned cold the next day. I originally started with Penguin Fireplaces as I was put off by some of the negative Energy House Yelp reviews (though most are old). I was promised a factory rebate by Penguin but they required first a $100 inspection before I could order (not so by Energy House). So I had the inspection and tried to order but the factory rebate had expired. And Penguin would not fully cover the rebate amount so I felt cheated. So I went to Energy House and I bought the Travis Fireplace Extraordinaire for $1000 less than an equivalent model at Penguin. This was slightly better than the original Penguin rebate price quoted. I am very happy with the appearance and functionality. I would use Energy House again. read more

Energy house did a sub par job on installation that my contractor had to complete. Since then the appliance worked well for six years. The unit failed to light from the remote control. I went to the Energy house and FRANK told me that I didn't need a service call, but I told him I would be more comfortable with one. He said he scheduled it with Nikki. I called Nikki several times, on different days and did not receive a return follow up. Desperate I went to the websites FRANK recommended only to find that the model they reference in the resynch the remote is not my model. All attempts made to have the remote operate the fireplace failed. More calls to Energy house, no response. Called Ryan the manager and he told me that Service would call back. Still waiting! I had a fireplace insert installed two years ago from the energy house. Christian came out for the original consultation. He was nice, professional and informative. a few weeks later the installers came with the fireplace insert (fireplace extrodinair, awesome fireplace!). that went fairly smoothly, except the door did not quite align with the shadow box. They said they would need to come back and fix. I called and emailed several times but could not get someone to come back. Eventually I got a call asking why I had not paid the balance. I explained the situation and said I'd be happy to pay when my very expensive fireplace was installed correctly. A week late two guys came out and fixed it, they were great. The fireplace has worked flawlessly ever since. the moral seems to be to make sure you get what you are paying for before you make your final payment! read more

I went in and met with Christian who was very helpful. I bought a fireplace that day and arranged the delivery to my half remodeled home. It arrived on time and Energy House men installed it. Since then my contractor arranged for our Granite guy to install the granite but they didn't open the boxes holding the fireplace surround before doing so and the surround was round at the top and now the granite is straight! So I rang and spoke to Alan who was pretty helpful but sounds pissed off all the time, never the less, he made arrangements for the fireplace surrounds (we have two for the see through) to be switched with a restocking charge!! They called to say the new ones were in and I went and did the switch without any problems. Now we are just waiting for the house to be finished so we can have them come out to light it -fingers crossed. Overall a pretty good experience. read more

Loved this place. Went in on a Saturday and there was one person working the store. Jana was professional, kind, and knew her stuff. AND when things got busy she kept kept her attention on us, making sure that we had the information that we needed. I personally thought their showroom was very nice. I was also pleased that when we asked about a specific finish or style, Jana whipped around and pointed at what it would look like. We ended up buying a very nice unit that day and it's now being installed. (She gave us the option of having our contractor install it or they could install it for us.) (In fact - there were many options to choose from for the actual unit itself - many of which can be added later if we want. Very cool.) I had a good experience with the customer service at Energy House. Lindsay was my main sales person and she was communicative and reachable via phone and email on a regular basis. She was also knowledgeable and able to provide her honest recommendations about glass doors and burners that would be the most cost effective but attractive for my project. The rest of their team Paige and Stasha were helpful in getting a variety of install and demo sessions scheduled for me. They were very flexible as I had moving timelines due to my renovation. I was able to reach them via phone and email easily. Lastly, my installer JR and and his team were a joy to work with. He was kind, professional and was very helpful in getting my questions answered. I am not surprised that Energy House has 3 stars. The customer service I received was not just bad, I could possibly deal with that, but deceiving, and inaccurate information on the product I was researching and intending to buy. I went to the shop with questions and an idea of what I wanted. The salesperson who helped me explained nothing to me. I had to ask multiple questions just to get the basic product information on the Peterson log set that I was interested in. He ushered me over to the desk and asked for my email so he could email me a quote. Not sure why he couldn't tell me then as I had all my measurements with me. I waited a couple of days and no response so I called and got another sales person who offered to give me a quote. I received his quote and then he emailed me to tell me his colleague had also emailed me a quote ( for some reason I didn't receive it). Well, the second salesperson's quote was a few hundred dollars cheaper than the first salesman. I asked that they honor the first lower quote. No I was told because the more expensive quote was a "bigger, better flame....it's a higher flame" hence the price difference and " you are getting the better unit". They were also selling me a 24" burner and a 30" log set. Not sounding right to me I got online and found a Peterson log dealer that was so nice and informative and told me that a 24" burner could not be used with a 30" log set per Peterson. Not ONLY did they help me by explaining what I was buying but I SAVED $700 dollars and no shipping or tax charges. Energy House said 3 weeks and my EXACT same log set arrived within a week. Please do the work to look elsewhere where you will be helped with good customer service and not gouged on pricing. * and by the way, to the guys(Frank & Chris) at Energy House, flame height is controlled by turning the gas key. read more

My contractor purchased 2 fireplace inserts (864 TRV GreenSmart Fireplace) from THE ENERGY HOUSE, **** IN SAN CARLOS**** when I had my house remodeled a few years ago. I had to go into their showroom about a year or two later and thought maybe the person on the floor was just having a bad day because he was not helpful or willing to be helpful and made it clear I was bothering him, so I shrugged it off AND LEFT! I went in today for a part for my neighbor's fire place and the person we spoke with on the floor seemed irritated or annoyed we came in to purchase a part. We showed him the Owner's manual with what we needed, he said we'd need to purchase the whole unit, then he said the parts guy was out and he can't help us unless we have the part number. When we asked further questions about someone else helping us he said the owner was also out AND THEN GAVE US A NASTY STARE LIKE WE WERE BOTHERING HIM! I will never go back in this business! Not even remotely customer friendly the 2 times of my visits. We went back home, got online, found the part and ordered it. I will never recommend this place or ever go back. I guess the worst part of this is after reading other reviews here on Yelp, it's apparent this is their normal mode of operation and they just don't care what customers think! Avoid The Energy House and especially Alan Karcich if you value your time, want to preserve your credit rating and don't want to end up in court. Long story short, one of our contractors bought 2 units from The Energy House. The units were released to a third party without my consent or that of the contractor. You can guess the rest...I ended up in small claims court - my first time. Alan on the other hand had three pending suits where he was the plaintiff on that same day and he knew everyone-the judge, the bailiff, everyone. He was quite comfortable in that environment. He should never have released the units to someone without full payment-so his unscrupulous business practices costs my family more money to pay for his mistakes and a day of my time. Do yourself a favor and buy a Mendota or Heat N Glo from Jimmy at Santa Cruz Spas, or go to Extreme Heat Source in Campbell, CA, but avoid The Energy House. read more

Energy House is the worst contractor we've worked with with respect to customer service (but at least they're outrageously expensive!). We had them remodel two fireplaces in our home. The Living Room fireplace works fine but is overstuffed with the giant log set they told us to buy so it looks weird. The Master Bedroom fireplace system make a hissing noise, so we shut off the pilot light and can't figure out how to get it back on (would be worthless anyway because who wants hissing in their bedroom?). We contacted them and they have no solution nor do they have an apology for misleading us into a bedroom system that isn't remotely appropriate. We went to San Carlos twice (!!!!) to pick up correct parts; no dice. Overall the end result was good, however, getting there was not. After they measured our fireplace and took our deposit, this is where customer service simply ends. Energy House said it would take about 6 weeks to make the doors, after 6 weeks no phone call. My wife and I left 3 messages in 3 days with no return call. I decided to drive to Energy House. I explained the situation, and they were very apologetic. They looked into when the doors would be delivered, and then we scheduled an installation day. The day came and no one showed up, so I called Energy House, and to my surprise someone answered the phone. They informed me the doors never arrived to their shop. Wow! a phone call would have been nice letting us know they would need to push back the installation day until the doors arrived especially since I took a vacation day When speaking to Energy House about this whole situation, and I believe it was of the owner, however not sure. I was amazed by his attitude in trying to justify the chain of events. Not once was Energy House proactive in informing us " The customer " of anything. My wife and I were the ones calling them, calling them, and calling them, or driving down to their shop. I was a little surprised with the lack of customer service since they have 3 locations and have been in business for awhile. Hopefully Energy House will improve in this area. We bought a gas fireplace through Rudy Salinas, with Energy House, during our home major renovation last year. So when we needed a replacement gas stove for my office, we did not hesitate to call Rudy again. Rudy is efficient, responsive, and a really nice guy. He is a pleasure to work with, he gave us a good price, and he goes above and beyond. Without being asked to do these things, he: (1) dropped off a vent cap to save us a trip to Energy House; (2) he called the manufacturer to find us a smaller exterior vent cap that would not protrude so far into our stairwell; and (3) he talked to his supplier to find out the correct color of "gray" paint, so that our vent pipe would match the Heat n Glo Paloma heating unit we purchased. He did all of these things on his own initiative, and we were so pleased! The installers, Jr. and Adam, were efficient, helpful, and did a nice job. I am really surprised at some of the reviews, as our experience was very good. We can highly recommend Rudy and Energy House!! read more

Bottom line: Check very carefully on your warranties and on how much service to your unit will cost you just one year after you buy it. I wish I had checked that with other dealers before choosing this one. If they aren't friendly when you are buying the unit, they won't be when it starts to need repair. I bought a gas fireplace insert from Energy House in Mar 2013. The delivery and installation took some arranging, and the timing with our remodel was a little tricky, but they got it installed and set up well enough. I wouldn't exactly call them friendly, but they were competent. A couple of weeks ago the fireplace started being tricky about starting, and not turning off, even when I turned it off at the base switch. I called Energy House to ask for assistance and was informed that it would be $195 for them to even come look at it. Although my unit has a two year warranty, the Energy House claims that their warranty only covers for one year. After some arguing, they have agreed to come look at it without the service fee. It remains to be seen if they will actually be able to get it functioning reliably. read more

Update Aug 27. Went to pick up the top at San Carlos. No one knew of the order and didn't know who Alan was. A mystery. Maybe the top and Alan are at a different branch. I'm investigating. I contacted them by phone and within 24 hours had some pretty difficult chimney flue parts in hand and installed in my home (7 x 4 vent pipe) picked up and installed by my contractor. I have just had a gas fireplace insert installed by Energy House, and I am happy to share my experiences. SHOWROOM: there are lots of fireplaces on display. I had no idea how much heat an insert puts out until they turned one on! We could see all the trims, etc., so we could home in on what we wanted. SALES: I don't know about other salespeople, but ask for Jana (calling ahead is not a bad idea since she is sometimes in the field). She is incredibly knowledgeable and incredibly nice. She explained all the details and did not rush us. Working with her was a real pleasure. SCHEDULE: We had to get a gas line installed, but we were able to able to schedule the insert installation shortly after that. INSTALLATION: One thing we liked was that the installation was done by Energy House personnel--they don't contract that out, and any service needed will be done by them as well. It is reassuring that the company that sells the fireplace is also standing behind the installation. There won't be any finger-pointing if there is a problem. Apparently all their installers are trained at the factory of the insert manufacturer. The installation took half a day and went very smoothly. We also got good recommendations for a plumber for the gas (Doug Behr) and an electrician for the optional use of the blower (Foley Electric). RESULT: We have a beautiful fireplace that we love. It's nice to be able to have a fire of short duration, which is difficult if you are burning wood. The heat is amazing! If you've wondered about realism, just go to the showroom and have a look.
