I am honestly shocked by how great some of the reviews are. It makes me wonder if it depends entirely on the day you go. My husband and I decided to check this place out on a Monday night for dinner. He had been craving a good steak for awhile, and we were excited to try a new spot. Nearly immediate disappointment. It was completely empty when we walked in, and right away we were asked if we had a reservation. We did not. The hostess seemed a little put off by this, but sat us anyway. I do understand that it's possible they had a whole group of reservations about to show up, but it was an off-putting reaction for our first time in. Our tablecloth was a little dirty and the music was a little loud, but we didn't want that to deter us, so we ordered drinks, and started looking over the menu. I decided on the salmon, and my husband was deciding on which steak. It turns out, they were out of the 6oz and all 3 of the 10oz steaks. If we had known this when we were seated, we may have come back another night. He decided on the 16oz Prime New York Strip with asparagus and mashed potatoes as the sides. Oh, they were also out of the salmon, so I ordered the shrimp accompaniment and the side Caesar salad. Already facing disappointment since they were out of so much of the menu. It got so much worse when the food arrived. The steak certainly didn't look like an actual 16oz cut, and was as thin as a cafeteria steak. It was at least cooked as asked at medium rare and had a decent char, but it was also served nearly room temperature. The steak knife was also super dull, which didn't help. The asparagus melted in your mouth, in a kind of over-cooked way, and the potatoes were so dry it was like they had been under a heat lamp for half an hour. The gravy basically tasted like a cheap canned gravy. My Caesar salad was...weird. Yes, it was a side salad, but the bowl it came in was huge, so it looked like a sad little thrown together salad. It tasted fine until I got to the bottom and there were massive chunks of bleu cheese. First of all, the menu did NOT say the Caesar would have bleu cheese - I wouldn't have ordered it. And I'm not sure it was supposed to be there since it was just chunks at the bottom, almost like they started serving the wrong salad and just plopped the correct one on top. The shrimp accompaniment was the star of the whole meal. Decent sized, seasoned well, and not over-cooked. The whole experience was just not good. I'm giving 2 stars since we did eat our food, and didn't complain to anyone, but realistically we probably should have just left when we learned they were out of 4 of their 8 steaks and the basic fish entree. Based on the experience, and how many other restaurants there are in town, I'm pretty confident we won't go back. read more

My friends and I decided to have a girls night here and was pleasantly surprised at the experience! They truly do embody the "casual" environment and is very approachable. They have a smaller dining space, so a reservation is recommended (you have to call, no online option) but when we arrived, they were ready and seated us promptly! We each got some sort of steak, potato and veggie combo and it was all VERY delicious! They offer you complementary homemade bread (this did take a bit of time, but they were warm when they came out) and we easily devoured it! I will say that it was a little slower than anticipated, but still very good. I would hope the bread would come out sooner than our appetizers. I ordered the caesar salad (very large) and included bleu cheese which was not listed on the menu. I would definitely list that on the menu unless it was an accident? We got bleu cheese on the bruschetta which listed another cheese, so again, I do think that they need to disclose this. I like it but most do not! I also ordered the $29 steak deal, which for the size and meal, I am very happy with! I ordered it medium rare and it was cooked properly. More rare than medium, which is how I like it! I think I'd like to come back and try it again, but for a good steak meal, it's approachable without feeling like it's TOO casual with peanuts on the ground. Parking is available across the street, but you do have to cross West River Drive, which can be a lot, but cars were patient while we made our way across. I'll definitely be back! read more

I've been reading rave reviews of Prime Casual Steakhouse since they opened, so I was really excited to visit recently with some friends. We had a reservation, which is highly recommended as it's not a huge space. You do have to call to make a reservation. The space is cozy and not super fancy, which made it comfortable for a long girls' dinner with lots of catching up. Some of us started with salads and an appetizer. They also gave us some complimentary rolls and butter. My Caesar salad was fresh and tasty, and a large portion for a side, but it had a lot of blue cheese crumbles, which wasn't listed on the menu. I personally love blue cheese, so I didn't mind, but it's a pretty polarizing ingredient so it surprised me a bit. The bruschetta was a really big portion and very delicious. I liked the amount of topping and the bread help up nicely. This dish also had blue cheese crumbles on it when we tried it. The steak menu is interesting and varied, and I like that all the cuts come with a potato and vegetable side, which isn't typical at fancier places. I went with the 10 oz barrel cut filet with mashed potatoes and asparagus, and I also ordered a side of the mac and cheese. Our main courses took a little bit of time to come out, but I was pleased with the meal. My medium rare filet was definitely more on the rare side, but I didn't mind. The mac and cheese was tasty but the sauce was a bit broken. It also had peas in it... not listed on the menu and also kind of weird. I liked it though! We were interested in the dessert options, but it sounded like they haven't really rounded that out yet as they just had a couple cupcakes. Our server was very kind and helpful and pretty attentive. This seems to be the West Michigan thing nowadays. High end-ish steak joints looking to offer the Chicago steakhouse menu but with a come as you are, straight from the game (or the beach) attitude. That concept hasn't quite worked (yet) for me. Let me explain. When you go to a high end steak place like Bowdie's, Gene & Georgetti, Smith & Wollensky, etc., you also get a certain PRIDE from the staff. Scraping the crumbs from the tablecloth, serving the steak, refolding the napkin, and so on. It's not stuffiness or arrogance; it's a quiet but unmissable pride. It's a crispness in execution that says "THIS is our profession," and you are going to love what we do. With these new high-end/casual steak joints the pride is still missing. It feels too much like folks just getting cute with their concept. Or restaurateurs who dabble instead of owning their lane. I haven't seen the serious steakhouse bluebloods who live and breathe steak. There's nothing (so far) that convinces me that these people absolutely know what they're doing and that you can lock in for the steak of your life. Maybe we just got an off night. The execution was meh. Too many people in our party needed to have their steaks refired or redone entirely. The cuts of meat looked thin and flat. (And it's not the hill I'll die on, but purists might not enjoy having their filet mignon butterflied.) The lobster tail add-ons were puny, and the à la carte sides didn't portion up to their price. (Honestly, consider family style portions and go ahead and charge more.) Our server himself was cheerful and pleasant. He did what he could with what's available and worked to make things right. What a wonderful experience in a Tuesday night at Prime casual . We definitely will be back ! Fantastic prices with sides included with your steak . Other places up charge for sides but not here . We dined with friends and had the petite filet , wagyu and the salmon . Everyone raved about their meals , steaks perfectly cooked to medium rare , very good cocktails and service was attentive but not overbearing. Really a casual steakhouse with prime cuts of beef ... no chain . The decor speaks of old time steakhouses and the baseball themed photos of Babe Ruth fit right in to the vibe and appropriately harkens to the local baseball team just a block away ! I came here for the first time recently for a girls night. It was the perfect spot for us, very casual laid back steak restaurant. For the price and quality I highly recommend. With my steak, side and cocktail and bruschetta app, it was under $65 with tip! One thing to note is that if you are starving, like we were, the food takes a minute to come out, so just keep that in mind. Other than that, I highly recommend and will definitely be going back on a date night! Another note is that they have very limited parking in their own parking lot, but there is a big lot across the street that many business use for public parking. read more

Went in for an early dinner/late lunch after seeing a play in GR on Sunday, 11/9/25 around 4pm. It wasn't too busy - yet, and we asked to sit at the bar. The space is cozy and welcoming. Our bartender was great and the food was so good! I neglected to take pictures of our food. I was too into my mule and he loved his old fashioned. We need to go back so I can do Prime justice on my review. I recognize this is subpar. But I do know we really enjoyed our cocktails, apps, salads, steaks and service. Let me start with the service. Kristina was amazing and made experience that much better. She went above and beyond to find my wife a few NA options to drink. Next the food. Wow, this place can go head to head with any high end steak house downtown or other big cities and the price points really do make it "casual." The filet was cooked perfectly and so tender I could cut it with a fork. Outstanding decor and setting. I wish I could give Prime Casual Steakhouse 6+ stars! Four of us enjoyed a magical evening celebrating several events last night. Our server Kaila was sweet and very helpful! We loved her. We started off with craft beer and wine all reasonably priced. The menu has several appetizers salads and entrees. The many steak offerings ranged in price from $28 to $80 for a tomahawk. Every entree comes with two sides. Most steak houses upcharge for sides which drives the price way up! Our steaks were grilled to perfection with a delicious seasoning/marinade. Two of us chose a baked potato and one chose mashed sweet potatoes. The asparagus and brussel sprouts were delicious. Each entree comes with roasted and marinated garlic cloves which were delightful and a nice surprise. My daughter chose the Mac and cheese saying it was the best ever. This restaurant checks off all the boxes. Amazing quality food with an upscale feel that is delicious and doesn't break the wallet. My husband has been dying to check it out and it was entirely worth it. The dining room is quaint and lively. Staff is friendly and does t pass by your table without checking to see if you need anything. The menu has everything from onion rings to steaks, salmon and tons of delicious sides. My husband loved his filet and I loved the Mac n cheese and Brussels sprouts. We both got the wedge salad too which was huge, next time we will split it. Food came out very fast too! I kept forgetting to try this place because it is not downtown, but I will say that, overall, it is worth taking the trip 10-15 minutes north of downtown to Comstock Park! First, the prices are fair and the meat/protein seems well-sourced. The ambiance and interior decor is very classic modern steakhouse, but still casual enough for where it's located. We ordered the bruschetta appetizer, and it was very, very good - the focaccia-style bread was delicious, the tomatoes were fresh, and the goat cheese was a nice, unique touch. And it came on a BIG plate! My boyfriend's dad, who doesn't usually eat much of the appetizer, devoured this one. We also got a few pieces of complimentary bread and butter. I ordered the 8 oz Wagyu Zabuton (sourced from Wyoming), medium rare...it came more rare, but I still enjoyed the flavor and it wasn't too chewy, so I didn't say anything about it to our waiter. I swapped the regular potatoes for mashed sweet potatoes (they were sold out of the baked sweet potato), and it came with asparagus & a little parmesan for the veggie. The sauce for the steak (demi glace, I think?), was a little too much than what I needed, but not overpowering. My boyfriend ordered the Porterhouse special, which was 40 or 44oz on the bone, and he asked for brussel sprouts and asparagus with no sauce/toppings and no potatoes; his veggies had to be sent back and replaced since they still added the sauce and toppings, but it was fairly quick. So many 5 star reviews????? Went with another couple, first thing didn't have my drink, menu out of date. If you want a steak sauce (tiny little container for $3) didn't have my wife's choice. No ice in the water. Three of us ordered the 10 oz filet. They were not $63 dollar tender and VERY salty! I like salt but this was over the top. Explained to the waiter who knows classy place might get me another steak, not charge for my drink, half off ? His response I'll be sure to let the chef know Then he came back to apologize that there would be no dessert tonight because the person responsible called in , say what ? First thing is the AC was broken. The server proceeded to tell us all of the things they were out of, yikes even adult beverages unavailable on a Saturday night. Appetizer was pretty good so that was a plus. Was told one of their premium sides would not be available for at least another 45 minutes, this was within a half hour of them opening! Food finally arrived, the Brussels sprout were cold like they just came out of a fridge. Meat was tough and flavorless. Potato tasted musty. Server was very apologetic but none of this was her fault. Wow!!!! What an amazing new find! Prime Casual Steakhouse opened about 4 weeks ago and is attached to and owned by the owner of Mill Creek Tavern. It's easy to pass up if you're driving by. When I walked in I was immediately greeted by three of the friendliest stuff members! I believe they were Dan, Jennifer, and John? I hope that's right. I was there right when they opened so there weren't many other customers in there. They helped me choose a wine and also my cut of steak and how I wanted it cooked. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and not at all pretentious. Because of this, I expected a mediocre steak. However, it was far from that. This was one of the best filets I have ever had. Perfectly cooked and juicy. My meal was served with delicious mashed potatoes and asparagus. I ended up having a lovely time and had enough to bring back to my hotel. I would give 0 stars if I could. We had reservations after I called and asked if they had openings on the 31st. The lady on the phone (which I wish I would have gotten her name) said they were completely booked for the 31st but she said they were completely open for the 1st. I said great let's do a 7pm on the first, she wrote it in and gave me the reservation. The day of, I called almost 12 times from 4pm to 6pm to see and make sure they were open and they have my reservation. I wasn't sure if their phone was down or something was up but nobody had called me to tell me my reservation was otherwise cancelled or changed. So we ended up driving 35 minutes in a blizzard to Prime only to see that they pasted a paper sign saying closed due to mechanical issues. How ridiculous. No one called me to inform me? Whenever we go to Bowdies, or Ruth Chris, or Terra we have never had problems like this. I'm shocked. We were excited to try a new local spot. Now we never want to go back. read more

Right off the bat they were out of New York Strips and a appetizer. Ordered a Manhattan was warm not stirred in ice. I ordered my steak medium it came rare and not real warm. I sent it back and it appeared they did nothing to make it medium. At that point I didn't want the steak anymore so the server did take it off the bill. Because I was still hungry we ordered cheese cake with caramel and the server came back and said they were out of caramel, so we decided not to get the cheesecake. Don't waste your money here!! We ordered two beers and a couple mules. We waited and waited and they were brought to the table 40 minutes later. Waitress was so overwhelmed that she couldn't keep up. Not her fault there should have been more people working. 15 min after drinks we finally got to put our order in. They didn't have 2 of the steaks that were listed on the menu. The steak I ordered med rare and came out med well. My dad ordered med and came out close to rare. After I asked they did give me $50 off my bill, but if I wouldn't have said something I don't think it would have been offed. Hoping management can make some changes. Came with a group. It was AWFUL. Service was so slow. They forgot our drinks. Brought our salads out at same time as dinner. Server complained constantly. Food was served cold. The food could have been amazing if it was served hot, given to the correct person who ordered it, served properly and in order. So not a cook/chef issue I don't think, it was the service after the dish was ready. CP needs a place like this, but they need to replace the staff. None of us have any desire to come back soon. The ambiance is Texas saloon meets Chicago Mafia steakhouse. Dark woods and moderate lighting create warmth and inviting spaces to visit with a friend or romantic partner. Music is light and familiar creating a mood that feeds the soul. We have tried steaks all around the Grand Rapids area and have found nothing that compares to Prime. The meat is clearly hand selected, and after speaking to the chef, found out it is locally sourced, dry aged and carefully curated. Even a simple sirloin cuts like butter and is seasoned just enough to experience the rich flavor of the meat itself. If you enjoy a truly good steak and know how to appreciate a well prepared cut, that doesn't need to be covered by seasonings, marinade or sauces...this is the purest experience in the Grand Rapids area. So much potential but was a huge miss for me. A lot left to be desired. As soon as you walk in the door you are greeted with a full view of the kitchen and all of the meat resting on a bakers rack. The bread was just meh.. missed opportunity to get patrons excited for their meal. Our app, the lollipops, gave a much better visual on the menu via the description than what was served. I ordered the wagyu and was told it was a very lean cut of meat and it was so fatty and a terrible cut of meat, I had to cut around it so much and our table shook every time I sawed another edible sliver off. I've made better brussells and mashed sweet potatoes at home. Food was bland and seemed unseasoned. Entree was served before our app dishes were cleared and they were looking around like "where do we put this on the table"? So we had to make the space for it ourselves. Food should not come out of that kitchen until the table is ready, but in reality they bring it out and set it at the hostess stand and double check which table it goes to before serving. We had less than 1' of space between one of our two seats and the hostess stand. That table should be eliminated from the floor plan. The staff is also casual, wearing sneakers on a Friday night. Was incredibly disappointed and would have rather spent an extra $100 at Chophouse for real service and food you can count on. What a let down for Valentine's Day and a wasted babysitter night. At the end of the meal we opted to skip dessert and they brought out complimentary salted caramels that I swear are just from Sam's Club.
