Thanks to Yelp I found this salon after I decided to cut my hair short back in April of 2017. Prior to I could never find a fair priced and reliable black hair salon/stylist in NY. Ended up setting up an appointment with Kiki - the owner (also a plus to support black owned businesses)- and she legit hooked me up. To this day every time I leave her salon I get nonstop compliments on my hair from strangers. Even referred my coworkers to come to her to maintain their natural hair (I'm relaxed). She also does weaves so you'll be in good hands regardless of what you need done! My hair has been so healthy since coming to her and she's also super flexible about fitting me to her schedule last minute if needed. Couldn't recommend a better salon. First time at a unisex salon! The salon is on a nice strip in Brooklyn that features nice cafes and eateries so location is a plus. It was organized and I appreciate the eye candy ;-). A remodel would elevate the bland appeal but it's definitely welcoming. Zakeya was my chosen stylist and she is awesome! Not only did she have a wonderful attitude and nice stylist to client conversation, but she moves quick (I had somewhere to be, she assessed her timing and nailed it - 2 hours I was outta there!), and my hair was beautiful just like I hoped! She doesn't use a lot of products that weigh my relaxed cut down, so my hair was soft and flowing! (Believe it or not that is challenging for many stylists to achieve.) First of all BIG thank you to Erik. I was in desperate search for a barber to cut my hair. After doing some research calling to different shops, I stumbled across this gem. From my first call the day before to my call that I was chasing trains to get to the shop, I was met with nothing but professional and respectful tones. It seems rare to find lately but clearly it still exists. Nonetheless I explained my dilemma of needing a cut to blend my hair to hide a thinning area as a result to stress. Erik assured me with confidence it could be done and he was the right barber who could cut my hair and keep the style feminine. The next day when I met Erik he greeted me with a smile and the unisex space also greeted me with a sense of community warmth and comfort. That seems to be fading as times change but this gem is definitely keeping that energy alive. I showed him a picture of a style I hoped would blend and hide the area until it grew back. Not only did he cut me to the style it fit my face perfectly. Kiki a stylist also offered her support as the cheerleader for support. I will start this off by saying that I am VERY happy with how my hair turned out. But of course this is about everything I was dissatisfied with. -two weeks in advance my stylist confirmed an appointment time 1 hour before the salon opens. The day before I confirmed but the day of she was 34 min late. -when she finished my hair she told me it was cash only, despite the physical door to the salon saying they take every major credit card (visa, MasterCard, etc). When I told her that yelp and the door said credit cards were accepted she said it was the owners credit card machine that she was not allowed to use??? Not sure why in 2 weeks of contact that wouldn't have been relayed to me. I don't think I would return. I normally never get my hair done, save for a trim every couple months, and I wanted to treat myself. This ended up being the biggest hassle. That being said, the end result is phenomenal but the insanity I had to go through was not. Perhaps the door signage should be amended to, "credit cards accepted at the owners discretion". The haircut I got here made me stop cutting my hair and grow it out... I have super curly and had been having a difficult time finding a salon that could cut this type of hair. However, when I found this salon and saw all of the positive reviews, I was super happy and excited to give it a go. My stylist was Fritz, who assured me that he knew how to cut curly hair like mine and that he would give me the haircut that I had been looking for. Long story short, he did not and months later I was still dealing with the consequences. I came in with a picture of what I wanted, explained to him the dilemma I had been dealing with at other salons, and trusted him to help me, but it seemed like he didn't listen. First of all, anyone who truly knows how to cut curly hair knows that you should cut it dry so that you're able to see the curl pattern, but the first thing he did was take me to the sink to wash my hair. Next, he dries my hair with a regular terrycloth towel, which, again, for curly hair is a no-no because it causes frizz to form. Then he just begins cutting my hair shorter and shorter (mind you, it was already super short), until the shape on my head is way too short and boxy. I wanted an asymmetrical cut that was shorter in the back and longer in the front that swooped towards the left and instead I walked out with a haircut that looked absolutely nothing like I asked. TL;DR: I didn't get the haircut I wanted. Wouldn't recommend. C'est la vie, I guess. read more

I stumbled into The Experience when I was in pinch and needed my hair done one evening. Kiki was done for the day and on her way out, but lucky for me, she stayed and helped me out. I have super long, multi textured, curly, knotty, unruly hair and she gave me the best blow out and flat iron I have had in years. She saved the day. Everything about her service was great. I came across Erik's Instagram page and knew right away he was who I wanted to do my cut. OK, first off, I firmly believe Eric at this salon is a master at his craft and could handle any hair. I needed to get my hair cut down from what was turning into something between prefontaine and Andy Samberg length to something short but not army short with a smooth fade. Though I'm sure like most salons in this part of Crown Heights, The Experience specializes in cutting black person hair, for $20 Eric produced the perfect look for this lanky white guy with insane cowlicks. And he exhibited a pride in his work that made me think that's just what he does for everyone. I needed to get a haircut stat and every other place in the neighborhood closes at 8, while The Experience was staying open until Midnight! It has a nice bright space mostly white with some multi-color modern decor and about seven hair cutting stations all equipped with clean gear and materials. Definitely going back! read more

Hameen gave me exactly what I wanted -- he listened, checked multiple times throughout the process to get confirmation that I was happy, didn't try to push me into getting another style and made me feel comfortable voicing my preferences. Doing good hair isn't just about skill, it's about being humble enough to listen to the client and put their preferences above all else.
