We needed someone to rebuild our 28 yr old Trex deck and wanted to go with Trex again, as we were so happy with the product in the past. Trex, however, does have specific foundation requirements that support the boards and we needed our foundation updated. We met with 3 companies all of whom had good reviews/referrals. We chose California Fence primarily because of Bill. This may sound silly but part of the reason is because when he come over to meet with us and provide a quote, he was covered with dirt and sawdust, which reinforced what he was telling us - He is on the job working with his crew all day unless running out to do a quote. He listened to our needs and gave us experienced feedback. We had a medium sized tree which needed removing and killing, which he also did, and he needed to work around a gas line to our fire pit. We liked his attention to detail and his straight to the point matter. After answering our questions he immediately brought out his tape measure, little book and pencil and worked out a quote. His crew is composed of his family and a couple of family friends that have been working with Bill for years. They were all very friendly and respectful and seemed to share Bill's attention to detail. Bill and crew were always available to us and responsive to any questions we may have had. We were impressed with the quality of their work. When they were done we had a beautiful new Trex deck and the area was nicely cleaned up. Bill and his crew just replaced my old fence with a brand new, beautiful fence plus two gates. They did everything I asked for: crown post above ground, 2x8 kickboard, 1x1 to eliminate gaps from board shrinkage, and board on board construction. Bill uses construction heart grade redwood so the finished product looks fantastic. See picture below. Bill's pricing is very reasonable, but the best part is their workmanship is very good. I wanted to install some GIGANTIC metal posts in my backyard for a large sun-shade (similar to the roof structure you see at Shoreline Amphitheater). California Fence came out very quickly and instantly gave me a bid, and was able to start very shortly afterwards. I asked for them to lay out the poles in "close to a square" formation. After they finished, the poles exceeded my expectations! They were EXACTLY in a square formation (down to the 1/8th inch), and PERFECTLY plumb. I was able to meet And talk to Bill multiple times and explain exactly what I wanted and he gave me some excellent advice which improved my project. Bill and his guys built us a retaining wall runing from our back fence to the front sidewalk, a little over 100 feet. The wall turned out better than we expected. I'm usualy a big "do it yourselfer", but this job was something to big for my father and I to tackle. I have no idea how I found Bill and his team, but I'm really glad I did. Several years ago, I needed a long fence fixed - quick and cheap, because I had a dog that was doing her best to knock it over. He was happy to take my shore-up job, even if it wasn't a fancy/nice new fence - and for a great price. I called him back later to do a small gate and again, he was happy to help out. When the winter took out a 75' fence, They were my first call. Took a bit to schedule, thanks to them being busy, but the fence they built is gorgeous. They did more work in a day, better than I could have done in a month. Its worth every penny and every bit of the wait. I'm a bit of a pest, but everyone on the team was happy to indulge my watching them work and asking questions. The crew are craftsmen. How naturally and easily they're able to level and cut is impressive, since I have done it (I built the fence that needed the scrappy repair 20 years ago) and know what it takes. Thanks again to Bill, Katrina and the team for a quality job, cheerfully done, very quickly! Last year in March we decided to replace the fence between us and the back neighbor. I had 3 contractors and them 2. The Yelp reviews and the "I tell you want you want to hear" made me trust this company and when they accepted the medium price of all 5 bids I hoped they are client focused business, Wrong. They used cheap materials. A week or so after they finished the work I have notice that I could see in my neighbor garden. They came, cut all vertical boards replaced them with a even more cheap boards (I had to glue all the knots before painting) and overlap them with a fix 1in measure (as the code requires ???) and used 2 screws in the middle of the length not let the boards bend in time. I was sorry for the neighbors money and trusting in my choice. This year we are remodeling the garden and by removing the old deck and plants I had noticed that there are gaps between the vertical board and the base board. I could not believe. It was the nightmare that did not want to stop. Called this company. As I could not speak directly and left few messages and no reply. Called again to be told next week (this week) Bill will come, As I had my own work in the garden to do I did not want to wait on them. Requested to come this last weekend. He came this Monday and said the wood was bended ???. He said he will cut the nails between the posts and base boards, will lift the base boards and put bolts to close the gaps, There are 5 out of 8 base boards that have gaps. Today at 4pm he supposed to come and repair them. About 1/2 hour ago I called them to inform that I do not want to came at all. I am done with them. Not only the wood will be weakened but the distress caused by their poor quality work has to stop. If small companies are only looking for work/money and not client satisfaction they will not survive long.This was a very bad experience poor quality work, poor quality materials and poor client satisfaction. read more
