I went here yesterday. First of all, Google says open at 5pm but they didn't open until 6pm. Fix that. A lady made our hookah I ordered white grape mint and it wasn't pulling. You know after maybe 10-12 hits, a hookah should be pulling...! We tell the woman our complaint and she gives us another hookah head this time it was blue mist. No change, it was not pulling. I've been smoking and making hookahs since 2013. I don't smoke it anymore but wanted to yesterday, just reminded me how it's not worth the money. I was pleasantly surprised by this hidden lounge in Jenkintown. I was surprised to see how well decorated and comfortable it was once you are inside. On the outside, I was very skeptical about it, but once in, I really appreciated it. It was HUGE lounge, lots of walking space, comfortable chairs and lots of room for you and your friends. The lights were also nice, the Arabic inspired decor was on point. I went on a Friday night and they had a DJ. The music was nice but I wish it was just a little more versatile...I wanted to sing along, but did not know any of the songs. My friends and I did not order food, but we did get hookah. The hookah was ok at first, but when I told the waiter it needed fixing, it was fixed and fine after that. My only concern, the waiter did not come to check up on us once, they didn't even change the coals on our hookah ONCE. I was mildly irritated especially because the lounge wasn't busy yet, it starred getting busy at the time I was leaving. Overall though, the staff was nice and the vibe was very chill. read more

Hidden hookah lounge in the middle of Jenkintown. Unfortunately it needs to stay hidden. The good: The staff is friendly, the hookah is reasonable, the place is cozy. The bad: The ventilation is poor. The food is awful. The bathroom is downright disgusting. After braving the frigid temps to find a cozy relaxing spot where my husband wanted to smoke some hookah, we found ourselves in a tiny, hidden spot that didn't even look like it belonged there. We ventured in and though it was very dim, it was cozy with minimal decor. It did have a TV towards the back of the room for those (myself) who don't smoke and wanted other forms of entertainment. Though they put some work into the room with some fresh paint and comfy couches, the kitchen and bathroom was severely lacking some attention. It was scary trying to use the bathroom as it was filthy and looked like it hadn't been cleaned since the dawn of time. They had a couch turned on its side just outside of the bathroom to be used as a pedestal for a lamp. Unfortunately I placed our order before going to the bathroom. Had I seen the bathroom and kitchen beforehand, I would not have ordered anything to eat. But since I wasn't smoking and wanted to nibble, I ordered some light snacks for us - the hummus and falafel. The hummus was so bland. I could get better tasting hummus from the supermarket. The falafel came wrapped in a pita and was downright awful. I've had better falafel at the food court in the mall. It didn't taste mediterranean or authentic at all. My husband thought the hookah was just ok but the price was fairly decent. Maybe our standards are higher because we've frequented other authentic hookah lounges and have traveled to the middle east where hookah is top notch and like a ritual for some. I want to like this place, and I do, I just won't go out of my way to go there. This is one of the older hookah joints in the area (that I know of, anyway) so they have a loyal customer base. The hookahs themselves are a little overpriced, and the pipes are often cracked with flimsy plastic hoses. Maybe I'm way out of line, but you'd think a hookah place (which is a luxury experience) would invest a little more in their equipment. Shisha offerings are just average; Al Fakher, Starbuzz, and a few other uninspiring brands. It's really dimly lit inside, and loud because of the acoustics. Service is hit or miss. It's a BYO which is always great in my opinion and the overall energy is pretty chill. After a certain time, they have a DJ on the weekends also. Some reviews on here are not great but I still came in here tonight just to see for myself. 1) bathrooms were fine- it wasn't as dirty as people said it was. Fig cafe is a great little spot, but maybe not for the faint of heart. It's tucked away very well and may require a few trips around the block to find, the ventilation is not the best, and the couches are indeed in slight disrepair, but...if you're looking for a cozy, casual place to smoke hookah and drink tea (in my case -- they are BYO and have a light menu) without spending a lot, it's perfect. The waitstaff is pleasant but again, casual (that is, they're not going to kiss your ass), and I found very attentive (it's a hookah bar, not McDonald's, everyone is supposed to be leisurely). The hookah itself was good, made well by you can tell veteran smokers (my only wish is that they used Coco Nara coals instead of quick light, but I'm just spoiled from smoking at home), and they do fruit bowls which I recommend, particularly mango Al Fakher with pineapple bowl, and the mint tea is delicious. Bottom line -- if you're looking for a low key, comfortable place to smoke, this place is perfect. I love this place as much for what it isn't, as for what it is. So many hookah bars today are trying to be nightclubs, which is fine if you are in the mood for loud music, and flashing lights. On those occasions when you aren't, though, it's nice to go to a place that is comfortable just being a hookah bar. The Fig Cafe is one of those places. The night we went we were pleasantly surprised to find a live jazz performance. It's possible that live jazz isn't keeping with the tradition of hookah lounges going back through the ages, but I am willing to indulge them this one violation. The jazz band was great, and I often myself nodding my head or tapping out the rhythm while still conversing with my companions. The space is a little run down, which accounts for the one-star deduction, but even that contributes to the feel of an authentic middle eastern hookah bar. Perhaps most important, is the great service we received from the staff. They were super-attentive to all of our needs, and made us feel right at home. I'm looking forward to going back. read more

This is one of my regular haunts. The Fig has a very relaxing atmosphere that allows you to sit back and enjoy. The interior is very cozy and dim. They have tapestries hanging off the walls, dozens of comfy couches and some very interesting videos playing on their TVs. The hookahs are by far the lowest price I have ever seen at a lounge ($13.00 at the highest). Great selection of flavors, which you are able to mix together, and you have the option to get your hookah 'iced' if you desire! The food is strictly Mediterranean. I haven't tried it all, but the hummus and salads are very good. Most definitely worth trying. The best part, in my opinion, about Fig is the smoothies. Fresh fruit and a decent amount of options that are also mixable! (May I recommend the strawberry banana?) The servers are the most down-to-earth, friendly people who you can meet, too. You could drive by the Fig Cafe a million times and not know it was there OR that it was actually in business, (from the outside, it looks like a bunch of ratty couches and rugs). Always wanting to try out a new place, I dragged my husband here (of course no kids should come in here) and had a great time. It's BYOB so you can bring some drinks (an cheap bottle of champagne was my choice--and a perfect choice I should add); relax and smoke the hookah! We chatted it up with a friendly couple nearby and also got great, friendly service. My only complaint is that the ventilation could use some work, and the place is a tad on the ratty side, but I think you kind of expect that in a hookah lounge. The Fig Cafe was my first experience in a Hookah Lounge. It was early 2012 and I had just moved to Jenkintown for work. I found the experience to be very welcoming to newcomers. My exposure to Hookahs was pretty minimal. The staff was very helpful. I had a lemon mint hookah, which is perfect for beginners; not too heavy leaves a refreshing sensation. I believe I also ordered some stuffed grape leaves to snack on, which was also a pleasant first experience. They often have good live music and a great social environment. My only real complaint was the ventilation not being particularly great, leaving the cafe full of smoke most of the time. It's close to a couple of nearby bars in walking distance and is a overall good experience. If you're in the area and haven't been to a hookah lounge before, you should give them a shot. read more

Place is an okay atmosphere. But the lady who was there made it clear that we were not welcome or she was not happy to work. I read good reviews and decided to give it a try with some friends. I understand that there are regulars but making it clear that we were not welcome made it very disappointing, especially because we were the first group there. She was very short with us and then proceeded to be very friendly with others that came in after us; clearly they seemed like regulars because she greeted them with a big smile. I love the Fig Cafe. Its open every day from 7PM to midnight, staying open til 2AM on Friday and Saturday. It is a hookah lounge, serving large hookahs with a multitude of flavors of tobacco to choose from, $10 for one flavor and $13 for mixed. There is also Middle Eastern cuisine, my favorite being the feta cheese and grape leaves which run about $6 a plate. They also have deserts and the baklava is homemade. If you want music, many nights live bands and singers serenade the place, with music videos on 5 large TVs keeping the atmosphere otherwise. Keep in mind that if there is music playing you may have to pay a cover charge anywhere from $2 to $5 per person. Tuesday is an open mike night with anyone who shows up to play getting a turn (and no cover fee). The staff here are friendly as are the other patrons. Many people who go here are regulars and know one another. The easy camaraderie can be seen in the seating with both booth and sofa circles available. The owner Waleed can be found towards the back of the store every day, chatting with customers and ringing up orders. If you own or would like to own a hookah, the Fig can help. They sell hookahs as well as a wide variety of tobacco flavor and coals. I personally love the banana :) The Fig Cafe is a pleasant experience without a curfew. I wish I could give this place zero stars. What stared off as a promising spot ended horribly due to outright disrespect and terrible customer service. I'll paint the picture...Its a pandemic rn so there's no food options, but not to fear my friends gave it a try anyway for my friends birthday. I was the first to arrive at 7pm, and there was literally no one, not a soul there. Even the staff were in the back, and there was no music playing. When someone finally comes out to greet me she asks me when my guests would arrive. We were all supposed to be there at 7 and I didn't know how late they would be. But she repeatedly asks me what time they will arrive about every 5-10 minutes. I even offered to leave and come back if it was a problem that everyone wasn't there, but she let me stay. Remember, there is absolutely no one here. So my friends trickle in and by 8 pm the woman comes over to tell us that we would have to leave by 10. So the 4 of us enjoy us ourselves for a while when my friends ask the manager to extend our time. At this point, there is 2 other groups but the place isn't crowded at all. They get clearance to allow us to stay until 10:30. So we go back to enjoy our hookah (which was good hookah) and the music (mostly hip hop) when at 10 pm on the dot the woman from earlier comes over to yell at us to kick us out. She points her finger in my face indicating that she told me that we had to leave at 10 pm. I am not exaggerating when I say she was literally yelling at us with all the hostility she could muster. Apparently these people don't talk to each other to know that our table time had been extended. We try to politely explain this to her, but she becomes hostile and brings a male coworker, or perhaps owner, over. He stands there while this woman continues to yell at us telling us to leave. Mind you, my friend works in hr and she has a way of handling conflict with professionalism that was not reciprocated. I have never in my life been so disrespected in a place of business. Also keeping in mind, the entire time, this place was pretty empty even for a pandemic. Needless to say I will never come back here and I suggest you don't either. Theres no hookah bar quite like the fig. Definitely one of the most relaxed, chill environments in all of philadelphia. Theres nothing like lounging out on one of the couches, and smoking a hookah while watching some crazy videos of people doing reckless things. The waiters and waitresses are all really cool people (although the guy chris is fugazi and doesnt know anything about baseball). I've been going there for years. Perfect spot to go to relax. The seating is comfortable with booths and many soft couches. Hookahs are the cheapest and best you can find in the area with a large selection of flavors. There is no rush and very often live music. They also have multiple screens hung up around the place showing various video clips so theere is always something to talk about. I've been going to the fig for a little while now as a place to go when I get out of work and don't feel like going straight home when I have nothing planned for the night. The hookah's are the cheapest I've seen (unless you're trying to buy one; In which case it might be better to go elsewhere since they have a markup), the servers are INCREDIBLY friendly and attentive. They have booths and couches, depending on how comfy you're trying to get. The lighting is low to the point it might be hard to read, but bright enough to see your friends, your food, and your hookah, which just enhances the relaxing atmosphere. They have television sets that are always playing pretty ridiculous videos, from sports bloopers over time to middle-eastern music videos (and VH1 hits from the 80s+90s). This place is the oasis of Jenkintown. The only reason they don't get 5 stars is because the bathrooms are in a bit of disrepair. But I'm a guy; I don't know the state of the women's room, and I go to dive bars all the time, so personally, I don't mind. read more

But, if your in the 30's to 40's range you can still have a good time and not feel out of place. My friend had the falafel which was really good. They served us with disposable plates and utensils. But, I guess that's how they keep the menu prices so reasonable. I only ordered a "Middle Eastern Tea" since I wasn't hungry. The tea wasn't Middle Eastern tea at all. Rather, it was just a regular lipton mint tea bag placed in a tiny tea pot. However, this little fact was quickly overlooked when I remembered that this place is a BYOB. So, my friend and I cracked open a bottle of wine and I forgot all about the tea. The prices of the hookah are very reasonable and they have a variety of flavors and brands. This is especially a good place to go if you're trying out a hookah for the first time. The waitress was especially patient when explaining how to use the hookah and describing the different flavors and blends. She also offered up some good suggestions. There is a parking lot behind the building and another one a few doors down. This is nice touch if you don't feel like trekking into center city, only to drive around for 20 minutes searching for parking and then paying for it. However, you should expect to pay about $5 extra per table for added gratuities and minimum order fees. Not bad.... but I'm just saying. This is probably the only place like it in this neighborhood. I specifically looked Fig up on here to see if they're even still open for business, and apparently they are. I used to go here years ago, late night and play chess with the owner Walid and just chill with some hookah. I'm also vegetarian so theres plenty I can eat. True , its not a 5 star restaurant, but its also not trying to be. But let me tell you something I learned from the owner while playing chess with him. He was royally screwed over by the local legislation and the landlord for the building. He signed a lease for 5 years for the place, only to be told by health inspectors that hes NOT ALLOWED to cook food on the premesis because of zoning on the building having to do with the prior business. Everything about the deal was sneaky, and they took advantage of a man who isnt as fluent in English nor savy in politics the way a seasoned American propriertor would be who grew up here. Walid was interested in just making the best of a bad situation and offering whatever it is he could to ride out the long term contract, or else he could be sued. I think the atmosphere is cozy, he supports local artists and bands, and gives under 21 people a place to hang out other than on the streets creating trouble. I'm glad hes still open for business, and the next time Im in town, I look forward to stoppin in to smoke some hookah and relax for a bit. Places like this are a gem in my opinion. American culture is so focussed on alcohol and partying yourself into a vortex of overindulgence. I always liked coming to The Fig, but after awhile I found places that were much more exciting and atmosphere was much better. The Fig does have a cozy/hidden atmosphere, but the the same times its awfully ventilated. The bathrooms aren't the best, actually there not very clean. The prices are a little high for something's, especially bubbles to use while smoking. The only thing I'm not happy with us that there's so many flavors and you can't try them all like other places I been to. For the amount of money you pay, you should be able to change in a agreeable amount of time. The smoothies are awesome, especially the piña colada one! I don't like the fact that of you have a group everyone has to spend 5$ minimum even after you all chip in to smoke. The other plus is that it's BYOB. Never going back here. Went here for a late date night. We were the only customers in the place. The music was ridiculously loud. The price on the menu said $10 per person, the waitress explained the menu was incorrect and it was $15 per person but her accent and the obnoxiously loud music made it very difficult to understand her. The hookah took over 15 minutes to arrive (I fell asleep waiting) and they brought us cups with ice (I didn't ask for ice as we brought red wine) and a busted looking corkscrew. We didn't order food or drinks. And the hookah was unstable and felt like it was going to fall over every time we moved the hose. When we were ready to leave, the bill said $20 per person and they explained that they charged us for 2 disposable tips for the hookah. I used to go the the fig all the time. But the last time I went, the service was horrible. I saw my waitress maybe 3-4 times out of the 3 hours being there. When it came to getting the check, it took 15-20 minutes to get her to come to our table and ask for the check, and in that time she walked past our table at least twice without giving the check until about 25 minutes later. A tip was included for just 2 people and in no way was the service worthy of a tip. I'm never going there again read more
