We made reservations but not sure if we really needed them, we were seated right away and the atmosphere was lively. Felt like I was in a different country (in a good way of course!) All the dishes were great, unique, and cooked perfectly. I deducted a star because they don't offer tap water, I feel like that's unethical to force people to buy water. I ended up ordering a lemonade but it wasn't really a lemonade but a pear soda - a cultural difference, I guess. I would return to try more dishes. read more

A true hidden gem that's been serving excellence for over 10 years! Maria and I walked in almost an hour before closing, and the staff couldn't have been more welcoming. They sat us right away with smiles and treated us with genuine courtesy no rush, just great hospitality. The food was outstanding. The chalahach was cooked perfectly, the tandoori bread was soft and fresh, the chicken soup was rich and flavorful, and the fried wings were perfectly seasoned easily some of the best in Northeast Philly. This was my brother's favorite restaurant. They hosted a gathering I organized for my brother after his death, and it couldn't have been better. The owner, Arthur, is an amazing host, and his staff are cordial and positive. The environment is beautifully warm with all of its lights and natural woodwork. And the FOOD? Heart warming, flavorful, and vibrant. ONE unique place to eat. I have nothing but HIGH praise for this restaurant, and I have been around--and to many a places to eat. Food still good, but they insult you by saying you must buy water, parking lot is very dark, out of certain items and prices online are less than when you get to restaurant. They should match. We've been eating here for decades. We've tried all the competition over the years as well. At this point, I'd go out on a limb and say that Samarkind, at this point, is their only competition. The menu is EXTENSIVE, and I have yet to be disappointed with anything we have ordered. Dumplings, potatoes, bread, Plov and ESPECIALLY real wood-grilled kabobs have been flawless and generally less expensive than at other places in the area. It may be a post-pandemic thing, but thestaff and management seem to be going out of their way to ensure that guests are having a good experience (but this has gradually improved over the decades, as they used to appear very "Soviet" in their approach to customer satisfaction.) Bottom line, they are the standard for this type of cuisine, and there MAY be reasons to try others in the area. But if you are looking for a "sure-bet" where everyting will be perfect, Uzbekistan is a guarantee. read more

First of all, parking on a Saturday night was literally impossible! The sign for the restaurant is hidden from the street, & I passed it twice: all I saw was "garden seating in the front & rear" Not a great start. I drove to the back of a parking lot that was dimly lit, poorly laid out, & looked like a construction site with dumpsters, tables & chairs stacked outside, taking up precious space. I had to back out, turn around, & was going to park illegally on the side, when I was approached by a disheveled man with a thick accent telling me he would park my car in a lot next door & bring me my keys. Was I being duped? I hoped not, but didn't have another choice. I went in & wanted to ask about the man that took my car, but there was no one at the hostess area. I asked a waitress to help me find my party, but she spoke no English. Fabulous - two strikes against you. Finally seated in the back with my party of 12, but I was now 1/2 hour late, though I arrived on time. The man brought me my keys & I later found he was an owner! The noise from the party in the next room was ear shattering with a few children who invented new levels of ear pain with their shrieks. My friends had already ordered & were just getting their appetizers, so I looked at the large menu & decided to start with the mushroom barley soup, thinking of the thick soup typically offered at Jewish restaurants. I asked her to give me a minute before I ordered my entree. That's when I found out that water was not free! What?! Bottled water only, so I ordered a Diet Coke for $3.50. The large soup came with a tiny creamer filled with a warm, thin sour cream (I think.) The soup was a thin but tasty broth with some mushroom slices & 2 large boiled potato chunks. I saw nor tasted any barley. Hardly the thick, tasty soup I was hoping for. When I ordered my drink, I ordered the beef stroganoff for my entree. Everyone offered me tastes of their food while I waited for mine. The eggplant salad was deliciously different. The hummus & bread was good, but nothing very special. Many people had ordered kebobs, mostly lamb, & they were served with marinated onion slices...period. I tasted the beef stroganoff & was surprised that it was served with thick, tasteless mashed potatoes & not the noodles to which I'm accustomed. People were looking for a waitress to ask for our checks. When she finally came, I told her I never got my beef stroganoff- "oh, I didn't know you wanted it. Do you want it now?" "No thanks. Everyone is done." The good news? My soup & soda with tax & tip was $12.50. Also, I tasted a few dishes & was not impressed. Maybe if I drank liquor it would have been more fun. It was certainly loud & raucous, though not at our table. The man that had parked my car was in the front & quickly brought my car to me. I was out of there & got home in time to get something good to eat from my fridge! read more

On a beautiful summer evening, we were looking for a new spot with outdoor seating to try, stumbled upon Uzbekistan Restaurant on a "best of" list, and headed toward the northeast for dinner. So glad we did: greatly enjoyed sitting on the covered patio* and trying as many dishes as we could. A number of families were dining and you could tell there were a number of regulars enjoying large pitchers of Compot with BYO mix-ins. Some highlights: the pickled green tomatoes on the Pickled Vegetables platter were out of this world! Also memorable, the Potato Vareniki (small potato dumplings similar to pierogies), the Lamb Kebab, the Pilaf Uzbekistan, and the Honey Cake. Though it was a bit of a trip from Center City, there was ample parking in the parking lot around back, and the food was worth the journey. *Open windows let in both breeze as well as a fair amount of traffic noise from Bustleton Avenue. read more

Food 5 stars! I took off one star because of the initial interaction with a staff person. First impressions are everything! I'll get to that later. First, if you drive by to fast you might miss it! Especially if it's night time and all the lights from other cars are glaring. Also, from the outside it looks like your driving up to someone's home. The restaurant looks like a house with a patio. There was even a speed boat in the parking lot (once we actually found the parking lot). The entrance to the parking lot is narrow and easy to miss from Bustleton Ave. So if it looks like your about to turn into the private driveway of someone's home then your going the right way! *laughing emoji* Initially things got off to a rocky start, I was slightly off-put by the "hostess." The person worked at the restaurant but I'm not sure who he was, might have been manager or owner even. Before we even got inside the restaurant, he asked us whether we had a disabled parking permit to park in the handicap spot we were in. I was slightly offended because I would never park in a spot I didn't have a permit to park in but we kindly let him know that we have a permit. Then shortly after that he asked whether we had a reservation. I said oh I didn't know we needed a reservation, I saw that we could have made one but we didn't. He looked around the patio (which only had two parties dining) and said usually on a Friday night you need a reservation but come this way. I thought that was strange, it felt like he was making it an issue, almost like a "shame on you for not making a reservation" even though it wasn't even packed that night!! Anyway I tried to overlook it and not take offense but the parking lot situation had already started grinding my gears. Fortunately, the food was phenomenal and made up for everything! I was happy that I went with the Chefs Special Moscow Fish. This was a hearty meal, my soul felt well fed. The sea bass was filet, cooked just right, nice and moist and baked with mushrooms, tomatoes, potatoes and topped with cheese. Baked Branzino was good but not as good as the Moscow Fish to me. The Branzino was nice and moist but it didn't have as much flavor as the Moscow Fish. The Branzino had a fresh fishy taste and relied heavily on the lemon slices for much of it's flavor. The Branzino is a really good fish however more herbs and spices would have done it a bit more justice to me. I'm a BIG rice eater so I had to order the Pilaf Uzbekistan to accompany my fish. The rice was fluffy, nicely seasoned and cooked just right, the meat and carrots were a nice compliment to the dish. If you love dumplings try the Manti! It's large meat dumplings with a drizzle of butter. You could make a meal out of them alone but if you want to have room to try other foods I recommend sharing because they are quite filling! The meat was well seasoned and moist. I was given a dipping sauce of sour cream on the side but I didn't need it for this dish. The eggplant salad was delightful to the palate! Bursting with intriguing flavor and texture as the eggplant is baked and garnished with finely crushed walnuts. I'm not a huge nut eater so I especially loved that the walnuts were finely crushed. It added a nice element to the dish and it wasn't overbearing at all. Overall a great experience, I loved that it felt like we were dining at the home of Uzbekistan friends who were giving us the most authentic Uzbekistan food experience (once we settled in and got better acquainted *laugh emoji*). In a lot of ways it felt like we were eating foods that were familiar but with a unique twist of delicious flavors and so much variety. I also love that their menu has pictures! So you get a sneak peak of what the dish actually looks like. I wish more restaurants would do that! Don't forget it's BYOB! read more

My family and sister's family had a great time at CU except for the half hour wait after being seated to be greeted and given menus. However, once we did get service, we had some great food. CU is a BYOB and we had a lot of vodka and Cointreau, wine, and beer. We had a lot of highlights that we all liked; all the kabobs especially the skirt steak, all the varieties of potatoes, the samsa, and rice with meat. Everything else was really good and I provided a bunch of pictures. In today's COVID-19 times, all staff were wearing masks and seating was still all outdoors but covered. We had very nice weather. Staff was difficult to understand while wearing masks but that's fine with me. For four adults (two and two teens), our bill came to $135 without tip. We brought our own alcohol. They charge for bottles of water and did not have tap available. There were numerous families eating out at CU this Labor Day weekend. Overall, it was just more fun to be out with family. All of the woodwork and everything else is done with his hands and he always makes sure his guests are treated like life long friends..... I absolutely adore this restaurant. We went there for Ramadan iftar. My husband was breaking his fast and craving a homemade soup and stew. We literally got everything on the menu!!! We had Mushroom Soup Kharcho Shurpa Eggplant Samsa Cheburek Veal Kebab lamb chops and lamb stew. Honey Cake, tea and coffee. Also got the Russian style Virgin punch. The food came out so quickly. Everything was so delicious and impeccably made. The manager checked on us several times. The eggplant salad is to DIE for. The soups are amazing. Lamb chops were so juicy. Don't let the exterior fool you. This restaurant is OUTSTANDING! The atmosphere is very eclectic, but the food and service are unmatched.
