It may be inflation Christmas this year, but as far as I'm concerned this means you just buy more for the animals in your life! I don't even have any of my own at the moment, but I discovered Fish & Bone and have treated the dogs and cats of my friends to the following: lobster-shaped toys (squeaky for dogs, catnip-stuffed for the felines); super stanky treats that taste like lobster, cod, and Icelandic fish (note: I did not actually taste these myself but the critters sure seemed to love them); dog and cat "wine" (stinky liquid in little wine-shaped bottles, I mean c'mon you can't resist); and other random little toys and things to bat around and chew on. Truly, this is a pet emporium of wonderfulness and treats, along with all the basics too (pet food, leashes and gear, etc.). Very friendly staff too, and each time I've been in there were cute dogs wandering around or snoozing behind the counter, so what's not to love? Fish & Bone is my go-to for dog equipment recommendations. I have gotten a couple excellent Ruffwear harnesses here and the staff is so nice and awesome with helping size my lab mix. They even reply to short notice Facebook messaged questions! Highly recommend shopping local if you're unsure what your dog needs. Wanting to get my pup something for our long drive back to NY, we stopped here prior to getting on the road. At first, I was hesitant to bring my pup inside, as there didn't seem to be other dogs inside. I was proven wrong. There were a ton of other dogs taking refuge from the heat inside the shop! My dog, the ever curious one, was quick to walk in between the treat and toy sections. Their diverse selection of treats must have been wonderful to smell; she seemed like she was having the most wonderful time! The staff were excellent, both to my pup and I. One of the ladies on the floor gave her treats, which she seemed to really enjoy. Shout out to the young man with the short hair behind the counter, Shane, whose exceptional customer service skills make me wish Fish and Bone were closer to us. I've been coming here a while and forgot to post this review. I work in the Old Port and I love this shop. I first stepped in out of curiosity to find out what kind of pet store is in a tourist area. I'm glad I did since they carry all kinds of high quality pet food and treats. My pets eat Taste of the Wild which is hard to find and these guys carry almost every flavor. They have Primal and several other frozen foods and broths. Their treats are great quality and I grab my dog a salmon skin anytime I stop in. They have the necessities as well. Poop bags, litter boxes, collars, tags, food and water dishes, leashes, etc. Finally, they have things for humans. First, they have clothing, jewelry, and accessories. More importantly, they have a reward program that is pretty good. Definitely shop here for your pets if you work anywhere near the Old Port area. read more

Stopped in with our 6 year old yellow lab after spending the day on the beach with him. Had read you can "take the salt off your dog" after a day at the beach and didn't quite know what that meant. We first looked outdoors for a hose/shower but learned that meant they have an indoor do-it-yourself dog wash. The room is visible at the front desk via a glass door. There are two side-by-side self-wash stations in a room that fits probably 3 people max. The room does not have a ceiling which is helpful as the humidity doesn't build as you wash your dog. We have only used one of these once at a chain pet store and it was so hot and humid in that store. Towels, shampoo, aprons, brushes and a dryer are provided. We brought our own shampoo but used everything else. The staff pretty much pointed you to the room and left it to you to figure everything out. We're glad we had used one of these before so had a little clue. The positives; the staff leaves you alone, everything you need is there, the room is comfortable in terms of temperature/humidity, you don't have to clean up after you finish, the price is reasonable ($16 for a 60-80 pound dog). The cons: if you needed assistance, you would have to go out and get their attention, the dryer blows cold air and was making a loud, distressed screaming sound on high and a rattling noise above the room accompanied the sound. This must be "normal" as none of the staff ever came in to see what all the noise was. We turned the dryer off and then back on low but it still continued to sound distressed. We did buy a small bag of dry Fromme dog food for our lab (which is his "regular" brand of food) and it was reasonably priced. Convenient for anyone who is bringing a dog to the ocean but does not live locally. We would return again under these circumstances. read more

I really liked being able to shop at The Fish & Bone on Commercial Street in Portland. They have a wide selection of all things pet supplies and they feature many items that I have not seen anywhere else before. It is fun to check out all of the different supplies that they have available and I was able to find many things that I wanted to purchase as gifts. I like how this store was organized as they are able to fit so many things in the space they have available. The vibe and atmosphere here is fun and free and enjoyed being here among it all. The Fish & Bone is a nice little pet store right in the heart of the city. It's across the street from the harbor. They have just about everything you need for your pet. Include Kong products and Blue Buffalo! A dog is not a dog unless it has a Kong in its life, trust me I know! Yogi & Benji play more with there Kong toys then they do with me. The staff was very helpful and courteous for us. We honestly just walked in because we were thinking of our dogs which were back home since we were on vacation. Yogi loves playing with chew rags and Benji pretty much chews on anything that squeaks. So in memory of our dogs and our trip to Maine from Miami. I LOVE Fish and Bone and my dog love it more. There's a great range of products, the store is well organized, and the staff is wonderful. They are super helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. A couple staff members know my name and my dog's name. I needed some toys to distract my dog and I realize they close at 5 on Sundays not 6. I HATE being that person who comes in 15 minutes before closing. They were so sweet, and didn't rush me or the couple who came in afterwards. Please support them! I was intrigued by the name alone (I love it!) and we decided to head on over to pick up some things for our new puppy. What an adorable and friendly store!! The customer service was wonderful, the staff so helpful and attentive, and the selection is great, love the diverse! Picked up a fleece jacket for our new puppy to keep him warm this winter, I love and can't wait for long walks knowing he will be nice and warm in his smart looking coat! I can't remember how long this place has been a place (formerly Fetch from Munjoy Hill) but my oldest dog is 14 and we've always gone there for his sweaters or coats or toys, food or snacks. For Xmas we got a gift certificate from Mother who misplaced it before getting it into my stocking. She also had thrown away the receipt. All is lost right? Enter Sylvie. My wife and I were in shopping for jacket for our new puppy who upon meeting the bigger dog Dorrie, promptly wet the floor. All good. Sylvie just disappears for a second and pops back with paper towels, spray cleaner and a smile. She (and Dorrie) assist in trying on all the coats that fit our Picnic and at one point asks how much we wanted to spend. My wife mentions a number and laments that if we had our gift certificate we would spend more. So here's the thing. We don't even know what day the gift card was purchased. After some discussion we noted that a rubber chicken in a bikini was also gifted and that was all Sylvie needed. She found the purchase in the computer and credited us the $40! Seriously. They showered both of them in treats, and when one wouldn't eat her treats (she gets shy and sometimes just gets overwhelmed with all the things) the cashier put extras in my bag to give to her later when she felt more comfortable. Was in Portland, ME recently and ran a quick errand for a friend (whom I was visiting). He had suggested Fetch as the place to pick up some food for his pet who has a special diet. I decided to make it a fun outing, and took a short walk through the city to Commercial Street to this store. The location is beyond cute, is easy to find, the prices are reasonble, and the staff is incredibly friendly. The best part was the help offered by one of the staff in getting directions to the nearest bookstore. (I found it without a blip due to that person's help). What could possibly top being able to bring your completely adorable cat with you on a weekend getaway to Portland staying at the Portland Harbor Hotel? (you can imagine the strange looks in an elevator with a carrier, luggage and a litter box for a 2-night stay haha) Fetch, that's what! We found so many cute toys and snacks for our 'fuzzy child' here, and I can't wait to go back to stock up on more goodies. Nice little pet store that seems to be having an identity crisis. Sign says Fetch, FB page says Fetch, Yelp page says Fetch, all of the bags, etc you get inside say Fish and Bone. Despite that, it's a solid pet store. It's small, but has a lot packed in. For the first time in my life I witnessed a "tasting" at a pet store. Yep, they were giving out tastes of Weruva to any dogs that came in. They also offered some to my husband. There is a decent selection for cats, which isn't always the case. My cat has allergies and I am always in search of different foods to try. While none of the cat food they carried would work for her, there were plenty of premium options for a cat with a reasonable diet. The staff were friendly and helpful. Probably the only pet-related place on the peninsula worth visiting. They don't carry anything low quality here, eith the exception of one or two food brands. You can choose from a great selection of frozen raw food for cats and dogs here! They have re organized the store recently and added some beautiful shelves for their sweaters and coats, and treat jars are now out of "dog level." My dogs love the mix and match treats sold here by the ounce, and I love that they add new things to this selection from time to time! My pets have allergies, and this store offers more grain-free and single ingredient treats than any big box store around. Prices are also great here! Trust me, locally owned doesn't mean you're paying any more for your pet's food! Staff is overall well educated, though two employees (Shane and Sylvie) notably excel as far as customer service and knowledge goes. I always look to see if these two are working- both are friendly and so helpful, they're willing to answer any question or concern! Both have gone above and beyond in the past for me, and I've seen them do the same with others in the store.
