Great lunch! I got the shrimp po'boy sandwich with fries and my wife got the club sandwich with the kale Caesar. Both sandwiches were phenomenal! The po'boy was lightly fried and not greasy at all, with a perfect fluffy and crispy bun! The club was the perfect blend of chicken, bacon, and avocado with a hint of mayo. We also got some Gin and Tonics with the house tonic water which was $1.00 extra. We both didn't really notice anything that would warrant the extra charge so in my view stick with the cheaper tonic water and better Gin! This was a fantastic choice for our dinner last night. We enjoyed a French 75 and a legit Sidecar and both cocktails were prepared perfectly. I decided to take the plunge on the pretzel appetizer and was delighted by tangy mustard and a flavorful beer cheese dips. A hanger steak was well-prepared with nicely done fries. I ordered a seasonal feature - butternut squash risotto and it. was. excellent. The kids enjoyed a skillet cookie with ice cream. I feel like all of the items we ordered often miss the mark at other restaurants but everything was really, really good. It was too dark to take photos. Had an amazing meal for restaurant week here! The atmosphere is great for a date or small group of friends. We ordered a bunch of the dishes on the menu to share and enjoyed all of them. Particular favorites were the Brussel sprout and bacon warm salad, short rib with cheesy egg noodles, butternut squash bisque, and flourless chocolate cake. The wait staff was extremely friendly and attentive, and we never felt rushed at all even with the fixed three course menu. The bar menu, with a great selection of beers and cocktails, is also great. Bottom line: the food is mediocre, poorly prepared and unimaginative. My wife and I had lunch mid-afternoon on a Friday. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich and roasted corn salad. Both dishes were poorly prepared. The sandwich was 2 huge pieces of chicken piled between 2 pieces of bread. It was 6 inches high! What is the point of serving a sandwich that cannot fit into one's mouth? So I had to deconstruct the sandwich, remove a slab of chicken, and then reassemble it. That's the cook's job, not mine. Regarding the flavor: nothing special. The roasted corn salad lacked flavor entirely. Lots of watery liquid (too watery and bland to be called dressing) and the corn didn't taste roasted at all. My wife's french fries were horrible. They were barely warm and tasted burnt. Also, they were just bits and pieces of fries, not fresh and meaty. After complaining, the cook sent another serving, which were good. Surely the cook realized the first batch was unacceptable. Point to Fitzroy: my wife's sandwich, called The Perfect Sandwich on the menu, was good. But when 3 out of the 4 dishes are sub-par, I don't want to waste my time or money again. read more

I got the Fitzroy burger with the sunny side egg add-on. Very good! ESPECIALLY the egg. Loved loved the egg. I also got the macaroni and cheese side, which tasted pretty good. My friend also got a burger, but he made the terrible mistake of picking the French fries for the side. What a terrible, tragic mistake. The fries were overcooked, hard... like yellow-orange colored sticks! Considering how the fries cost $5... I would have expected far better quality than the crunchy abdominal they were. Also the place is packed and loud when we went (late evening), so you might have to think twice before picking this place for any type of conversation because it gets to be extremely difficult to hear what the other person is saying without half-yelling. read more

The Fitzroy remodel was a great addition to the downtown mall aesthetically speaking. I was really excited when I saw the restaurant going in, and it succeeded in having a trendy, cozy vibe inside. Location, atmosphere, service, comfort, food and drink - all on point. There are a few drawbacks, but ultimately I highly recommend checking out The Fitzroy next time you're out on the downtown mall. We stopped in for dinner the other night and were greeted quickly by two hosts. While the place seemed a bit crowded, we were able to put our names on a list and take a stroll. We received a text message when our table was ready. We were given the option of waiting for a table or sitting at long, communal high-top tables. So glad that we went with the two-top. The Fitzroy can be a bit...loud. Given, it was a Saturday night and the place was full, but they haven't fully figured out the acoustics yet. It's a dark, moody space with hard walls and ceilings that cause noise to pop around the room. If you're into that kind of thing, it's fine for you, but be prepared that you'll have to speak up to be heard. Ivy, our server, had the perfect mix of service and solitude. She was prompt and polite, but knew when to give us some space to chat and dine. Very happy with the service from Ivy, front desk, and food runners. On to the housemade tonic. Let's just say that if you consume alcohol and you leave the Fitzroy without trying their tonic, you've failed. It is INCREDIBLE! Both E and I had a couple of gin and tonics and they are perfectly made - New Amsterdam gin, housemate tonic, citrus, and grapefruit. Wow. Just wow. We started with the spinach and cheese dip. A nice starter - not too healthy but after a G&T, all bets are off. E had the Cobb Salad, which was slightly underwhelming, though both the housemade ranch and oddly, the corn, were tasty. I had the hanger steak w/ beurre blanc and housemade (yes, a theme has arisen) fries. The steak was cooked to a perfect mid-rare and the fries were out of this world. E spiced up her salad with a few fries, not gonna lie. The abundant "pros" for The Fitzroy far outweigh the few "cons," so we'll definitely go back. The glasses were clean and the outdoor area was clean as well which was a plus. We enjoyed major people watching and chatted with a couple bus boys and security guard as well. Me, my wife, and a friend went to dinner at The Fitzroy on 6/26/2016. Among the other restaurants at the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville, we chose this restaurant because the menu seemed decent, they could seat us quickly, and prices didn't seem too high. Unfortunately, we were all disappointed. I ordered The Fitzroy burger, and my wife ordered the fired chicken sandwich. The burger was small, maybe 1/3lb, and the fried chicken covered only a portion of the bun it was served on. The sides are extra, so I ordered a a side of hand-cut french fries for $4. The burger and fries I ordered were $13 before tax and tip. The chicken sandwich alone was $10. With my drink, our entrees, my side, tax, and tip, our bill came to $34. The burger was good, but it wasn't *that* good. The chicken sandwich was small, and the flavor was mediocre. The service and atmosphere was excellent, so if that's what you look for when you go to a restaurant, they have that covered. However, $34 is the most I've ever spent on fast food in my life. Please look past the hype, the new facade, and the novelty. Overall, it's Blue Light with the makeup it needed badly years ago. The Fitzroy is more of the same, just with a cowardly cop out as to their identity. They have none. At least Blue Light took a stand on what it was. A look through The Fitzroy's menu shows they have no idea what they are supposed to be: a baked pretzel, oysters, meatloaf, and street corn (The Club was quite good, admittedly)? There is a dog chasing its tail in the kitchen, unsure of what to put out. And having the customers "customize" their own orders with sides of their own choosing further shows they have no ability or interest in constructing a dish. The cocktails and beer selections are good however, and the decor is very nice - up to par now with its downtown brethren. It's only a matter of time before it's back to being a dirty, late night drink spot and nothing more. read more

They have a decent drink menu, but I still prefer Alley Light for old fashioned libations. Great place. They just renovated it (formerly was Bluelight Grill), and the bar is amazing. We went in the day they opened, and the staff was incredibly friendly. The owner even came by just to say hello. We tried a few different types of the oysters and the shrimp po boy. I was hoping for a warm welcome and conversation and that didn't happen. The food was ok. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich and the quality of the chicken was disappointing.. stringy and came apart in chunks, but the flavor was there! You have to order sides separately so it was $10 just for the sandwich. A bit steep for what it is, I think. I asked for beer recommendations and the bartender seemed a bit bothered by my questions. Went once for dinner, seated on stools, couldn't hear over the deafening Friday after 5 crowd (but no happy hour here), waitress never asked how our orders were, tiniest cocktail ever received and wasn't well made -- I know this cocktail -- ordered fried chicken which was served with NOTHING else, not even a little piece of parsley as garnish, just blah there on plate, partner's shrimp and grits meh, and chocolate cake not really. But the completely disinterested waitperson with a momentary fake smile was the most surprising -- had to ask hostess for salt and pepper. And bread with your meal? Forget it. They don't do. Summary -- dive aimed at young (loud!) local workers who are there mainly to drink (beer, not cocktails), and get a bite. read more

The vibe is that of a 1920's speakeasy brought into the 21st century with subway tile detail, beautiful white marble bar, and large community tables. The food is new American with comforting twist featuring a decadent short rib stroganoff that absolutely melts in your mouth. As far as cocktails go, the Apricot Sour is a must with chamomile infused Tito's vodka. However, Blantons and Knob Creek Single Barrel are highlights of the drink menu for any bourbon lover. read more

This was my 1st time in Charlottesville and the selection of places to eat is endless! We decided on Fitzroy. The menu didn't impress at first look, but I must admit the food we ordered was delicious. I also noticed that all the plates leaving the open aired kitchen looked phenomenal and fresh. I had the club... Delicious! We also ordered the NOLA shrimp and they were thankfully tasty but not spicy. Lastly we ordered the Kale Caesar salad... So good! You could tell the garlic was fresh. The ambiance is trendy, the music is good and the service is impeccable. I would definitely come again. I 100% recommend Fitzroy if you are looking for a fun casual place to eat. I was super pleased with my experience at The Fitzroy. I was under the impression that it was all oysters/seafood, but that's actually a small part of their menu. There were so many things on the menu that appealed to us, so my husband and I decided to order one entree and three sides and split them all. Our fried chicken was gorgeous. The plate had three large cutlets (a mix of white and dark meat). It had a lumpy (vs. flaky) breading that was super crunchy and delicious, and it was drizzled with honey, a small amount of hot sauce, and sesame seeds. One person could have eaten it all, but they would've had no room leftover. The mac and cheese was awesome and for some distinct but unclear reason, it reminded me of my childhood. The duck fat potatoes were probably our least favorite thing we tried--not bad, just kind of boring. We brought home the leftovers and plan to spice them up and turn them into breakfast potatoes! We also split some brussels sprouts which we both enjoyed, though I wish the pieces had been a bit smaller and a little more charred. For our next visit, I have my eye on the baked pretzel, pork chop, and street corn. The environment was pretty cool. It does seem loud when you're standing outside, but it wasn't as bad as I anticipated when we got in. We went on a Friday night at 6pm and had no wait (awesome). Our waiter was absolutely, genuinely excellent, even going out of his way to clarify an ingredient with the chef (without us asking him to). Our dinner for two, which had way more than enough food, was about $40 including tip, which was really reasonable considering the quality. There's a large bar, a few large booths, some high top seating, and several regular tables. This would be a great spot for after work cocktails, dinner with friends, or a date. read more

Very interesting vibe here...I would say this place reminds me of a dim lit sports bar. I wouldn't call this place a cocktail bar, even though they have all the essentials to be a great one. A comfortable atmosphere with good beer/drink selections and good food. This isn't a place to go get top of the line dishes - it's a place to wind down and enjoy yourself. We sat at the bar for dinner and drinks and the barkeeps were attentive and nice. They engaged with us without being overbearing and were always on top of our drinks and food. I liked it. Every Sunday I'm home in the summer from college, I try to make it up to the Fitzroy for brunch. The quality of food, atmosphere, and customer service are the best around. I have never experienced a sausage gravy like theirs. The chicken for the chicken and waffles are amazing. I cannot stress enough the importance of giving this place a shot for brunch.
