We got there around 3 on a Friday afternoon and no hostess was at the front. Almost no customers there. Should have been an obvious sign of trouble. Waited few minutes until hostess arrived and rushed us to our table. Waitress friendly but all lunch entrees were $12 each so we expected quality sandwich and sides. My sandwich was good but my husband's was 2nd rate Chick- fil-a knockoff. Fries were cold and burnt. Roasted corn salad was cold and not roasted at all (tasted like frozen corn). I thought it was a fine place, though the menu was pretty limited. I had the fried chicken sandwich--good, but not a very generous portion. I was hungry an hour later. The best thing about the Fitzroy is sitting outside on the downtown mall on a pretty day. You can't help but run into people you know, and its a very pleasant experience. Unbelievably good All-American food done right. I had what might be one of the best burgers I've ever eaten here - dry aged beef, house made sauce - it melted in my mouth. The duck fat potatoes are not to be missed. The price is very good for being in the downtown pedestrian mall. 10/10 would come back again and again! read more

I was excited to see New Orleans style BBQ shrimp on the menu. And if you like smelly, small, rubbery over cooked shrimps soaking in melted margarine with no spice and no rice, for about $2 per shrimp then you will love this dish. But the Fitzroy cook better not try to serve that in Nola. He'd get his ass kicked. read more

The restaurant looks really great and has a nice atmosphere. Unfortunately, the food wasn't great for Saturday brunch. The food was a bit pricey for the quality, the club sandwich had chopped turkey that fell apart from the sandwich and the baked onion dip didn't come with enough bread and was cold before we got more. The fried chicken sandwich was great however. I'm giving it a three because it was a weekend lunch menu and the food may be a lot better for dinner. read more

I had my post-wedding breakfast at the Fitzroy during their Sunday Brunch Buffet and it was wonderful! Rich (the manager) was really nice and was quick to respond to me by email when I contacted him about my 30-people reservation. He opened the restaurant a little early for us as well to accommodate our big party. The breakfast buffet was filling and delicious! All my guests were so pleased and the staff was very nice to us. If their other meals are as good as breakfast, I look forward to coming back on a normal day when I'm not getting married haha! read more

We ate there for Saturday of restaurant week. Service was very good. Everything else went downhill. My chowder was average, no complaints. The dinner was terrible. It was the worst fish taco I have ever had in my life. It was on a flour tortilla and it contained a large chunk of mahi. Typically fish tacos are more flavorful and the fish is in smaller pieces with nice sauces and maybe some shredded cabbage. This one had almost no vegetable and no sauce of any distinction. Both of us had it and we both thought it was terrible. A diner one table over had fried chicken with mac and cheese. That looked appetizing; don't know how it tasted. So, kudos for service but the food was bad enough that I plan to never return. read more

Three stars for a pet peeve of bars/restaurants that I have. And I'll bet you do too. Fitzroy does an excellent Sunday Brunch buffet. The food is excellent and @ $18/head isn't too pricey (at least compared to the Boar's Head brunch). We were there this Sunday, sat at the bar and had a lovely time. Only afterwards did I realize that the Diet Coke I ordered did not come with free refills. $3/each. OK, annoying. But what really irks me is that the glass was mostly ice with some Diet Coke sprinkled over the top. I literally had three sips of Coke before it was just ice. So, I didn't think twice about ordering another. And another. $9 for the equivalent of one actual Diet Coke. Total nickel and dime move I'd expect at a Tourist Trap restaurant on Fisherman's Wharf in SF or at a Guy Fieri restaurant in Times Square (Oh, wait? That closed down? Too bad) But at Fitzroy? Just charge me $5 and make the refills free. I'm kind of done with this place until that changes. The food is good but I feel like I was pickpocketed while I sat at the bar. Bartender never mentioned that the refills all cost $3. At least do that. Or at least change the ratio of Ice to Coke from 90/10 to 50/50. Anything. What's the point of this, really? What is the Cost of Goods on a fountain diet Coke? $0.10? F&ck me. Compelled to avoid this place out of principal. read more

Everything was nice until we ordered food. We just ordered a pretzel to snack on and it never came. 45 minutes later we just closed our tab, made sure we only paid for our beers and left. Kinda annoying but whatever. A few days later I noticed we had another charge on our credit card for the price of a pretzel that we never received. So is the off the cob street corn. I'm starting to go more often- the service is always excellent and I've yet to be disappointed with any of the food and the prices are reasonable for the downtown mall. Visited for an early Thursday evening dinner and had an absolutely perfect meal! My boyfriend and I split the hanger steak, veggie kabobs with shrimp, Brussels sprouts side, and cauliflower side. All of them were excellent! The hanger steak was perfectly cooked medium rare and came with a colossal portion of fries, also delicious. The veggie kabobs had a heavenly right off the grill taste perfect for a summer dinner. Both vegetable sides were exquisitely prepared. The cauliflower was served in a decadent cream sauce, while the Brussel sprouts had a more traditional roasting preparation. This was a filling meal for two hungry people but allowed us to fit in dessert later in the evening. Bill was $50 plus tip. The service was spot on. Drink refills were perfectly timed without us having to ask, and our food came out within twenty minutes tops. The inside of the restaurant is very pretty and they had some lovely outdoor seating as well. Huge bar with three tvs overhead showing sports channels. We sat out outside on a Sunday morning. Everything was delightful and the food was delicious. The cost was $18/person for the buffet and the quality for that price was very good. The staff were very nice but not intrusive. Any less and they would have been missing so it was a nice balance. We're considering it a gem and so glad we found it. read more

I can't believe this isn't in the top ten of the best restaurants in Charlottesville! Everyone needs to go! While we were wandering downtown on a Saturday night looking for a restaurant without an hour wait, we finally decided to sit down and have dinner here at the Fitzroy after trying too long to find a place. We walked in right away with we're seated at a nice table. We weren't expecting it to turn out this amazing of place!! They had a wonderful selection of beers and cocktails. But the real star of the show was the AMAZING FOOD! I ordered the Fried Chicken and it was one of the best I've ever had! It was so crispy, perfectly seasoned, tender, and juicy. I would 100% recommend this and the fact that everyone wanted multiple bites of my meal was proof. The shrimp po boy was excellent and not too heavy. The Reuben was amazingly done as well as the burger. For sides we ordered the street corn off the cob, the table's favorite, and the macaroni and cheese. The macaroni and cheese wasn't very different from what we have had before but it was still so tasty! We all left this restaurant completely satisfied and happy with the reasonable pricing and great quality of our meal! read more

We arrived hungry & annoyed by another restaurant down the street that did not honor our reservation because they needed a break or something. It was 3:15 on a weekday so we were the only customers when we arrived. Our waitress was friendly & prompt. We ordered the $12 lunch...everything was the same price! We had very good clam chowder that was not heavy but had great flavor & lots of clams. We had a shrimp po'boys & fries. Everything was very good. read more

Horrible service experience at the Fitzroy. Our waiter was stoned or drunk, and restaurant management seemed completely oblivious to the problem. It took 20 minutes for anyone to acknowledge us at our table, and when the waiter finally did stop by, it was clear that something was "off." He took our drink order, and 10 minutes later returned and asked us *again* what we wanted to drink. 5 minutes after that he delivered *one* drink (out of 4) and asked if he was missing anything. He was clearly inebriated. We got up and left the restaurant immediately (having wasted 30+ minutes of our weekend afternoon). Will not return. read more

My best friend and I went to the Fitzroy for dinner tonight and we were reasonably satisfied. Great atmosphere (though the floor tiles seem a little off) that smacks of a much bigger and hipper city. The waitstaff was polite and hella attractive, and there was plenty of seating indoors and out. She ordered the shrimp po'boy and I had the fried chicken sandwich. We also shared the broiled mac and cheese side dish. The mac and cheese isn't very flavorful, which was disappointing to a cheese connoisseur like me. My sandwich was maybe a 6 out of 10, as the pickles were distracting and the sauce didn't go super well with the rest of the sandwich. Plus, it was $10 without fries or anything which I was a bit sad about. Yet, the chicken was very crunchy and had a tasty bun, both redeeming qualities. The waitress said everything was á la carte, which made sense, but was still a bit meh. The po'boy was amazing and delicious - coming from someone who's afraid of seafood, that's saying something. They have a bourbon chocolate cake that we eyed, but ended up not getting. Our bill was around $26, which wasn't too bad considering the atmosphere and the newness of the location. They also have an elderberry drink with lavender honey which I'd love to try when I'm of age to drink. Great place to take someone you want to impress. read more

Considering it just opened, I was very impressed with the Fitzroy. As expected, it has some room for improvement (the service was slow, but the wait staff was very friendly). The remodel is excellent--the restaurant looks huge compared to when it was blue light. The hot onion dip appetizer was excellent. The only veggie entree, the cauliflower steak, was very good although it had a little too much sauce. Overall, it was a great experience for a new restaurant. I'll definitively come back. read more

My hubby and I went to the Fitzroy for the first time last weekend and it was wonderful! I ordered the shrimp po' boy that surprisingly, came on a brioche type roll. Finally made it to this newish restaurant on the Downtown Mall yesterday. It was a lovely and pleasant lunch experience. As I walked into the breezy and welcoming establishment my nose was met with the most delightful scent of potatoes cooking. Sat down with my friend at an ample table for two and had a delicious lunch. Their lunches are a flat $12.00 and the portions generous. I had the burger with sweet potato fries and it came with pickles on it and also a nice pickle on the side. My friend had the po-boy and said it was yummy. Service was excellent; attentive without being pesky. Acoustics and surroundings in the restaurant are very comfortable, also offers outdoor seating. I would definitely recommend this establishment when looking for a special and yummy lunch with friends! read more

The fried chicken here is amazing! The Mac and cheese and pretzels were really good also! The only downfall was the service at the bar- they weren't very attentive or friendly. I don't write reviews often, however, the experience I had a Fitz Roy deserves one. First of all, what an amazing transformation. The decor and vibe reminds me of a trendy, casual NYC/Chicago spot. The food hit the mark in both taste and price point. I went with a group of friends and we share the same likes/dislikes, so this menu allowed us to share! We started off with the NOLA shrimp and Oyster Rockefeller, for entrees we had the pork chop, and FOD - Halibut. We ordered a few sides: mac 'n cheese, and brussel sprouts. How could I forget the banana spit, what a classic! Oh and the drinks were great! Everything was delicious, the waitress was attentive, everything was on point! This is hands down the best looking restaurant in Charlottesville. What they have done with the old Blue Light space is incredible. We ordered just about everything and the favorites were the oysters, clam chowder, sprouts, and pork chop. The chicken wing dry rub was a hair salty for a couple of us. read more
