Worst cheeseburger ever - processed cheese and no flavor at all - not done to order. Very disappointing

I had the chicken-strips and highly recommended, although I believe it would be better with an complementary sauce that appeases the dish. I would give the drinks at the Fitzroy 5 stars on their own, because out of the 5 or so I've tried, they've all been so delicious! I've consistently enjoyed getting cocktails here as the prices are not too bad, and they have a great taste while still seeming reasonably strong. Plus the interior is beautiful and has a great ambience for late night drinks with friends. Also, they have a quite spacious, socially distanced setup for Covid. I haven't tried that much of their food except for some of the appetizers, such as the fries, which were just okay - I felt they were a bit pricey for the quality. Came here for drinks. It's a fun little bar spot. They were very welcoming - the manager made sure we got seats at the bar. Large TVs above the bar and definitely people of all ages inside. We ordered the French 75, Showboat, and the Fitz Spritz and everything was made very well. read more

For a restaurant with such good reviews, our experience here last night completely dropped the ball. I try to give restaurants the benefit of the doubt, especially during COVID times, but in an area with so many amazing food and drink sites, the Fitzroy is one place I would not recommend. We arrived to a full house on Sunday of MDW, and were seated promptly for our reservation. This restaurant is pretty small and directly on the Charlottesville downtown mall, so it books up quickly and they were not accepting walk ins, so if you DO decide to go here, I would recommend a reservation. We had some reservations about coming here in the first place since the Fitzroy does not have a very extensive menu, but we decided to try it anyways (and since many restaurants were already booked for the holiday weekend). As soon as we were seated, our server informed us that they were fully sold out of 2 types of specialty cocktails, the wings, the shrimp scampi, salmon and the mac and cheese. It seems like they really need to get their supply management under better control because that wiped out half the (already limited) menu options! We thought about leaving but didn't know where else to go, so we stayed and ordered some burgers and the scampi (just without shrimp). Our server came back to tell us that "luckily" the kitchen found some shrimp to put on the scampi. However the food was just awful. When it came out, the burgers were small and plain and had literally no toppings except ketchup and mustard. I could have literally saved my money and got a better quality burger down the road at the Cookout drive through. The scampi was pretty inedible because the shrimp was over cooked and rubbery, and the sauce tasted like watered down lemon juice. Also bucatini noodles in shrimp scampi is just ... not good. Overall we were so disappointed and wished we had dined literally anywhere else than here. In a city such as Charlottesville with a plethora of fine dining experiences to choose from, I would highly suggest choosing somewhere other than The Fitzroy. read more

The food is pretty decent here - I thought it was solid both times I came, once for lunch and once for dinner. The lunch menu has a good price for a combo set (e.g., sandwich and side). I had the portobello mushroom burger for lunch with the corn salad as a side, and I thought it was all right. It wasn't particularly flavorful, but it was filling and lasted me two meals (always a plus!). For dinner, I had the fried chicken sandwich, which is definitely an impressive-looking affair. It was a bit too buffalo-y in my opinion, but I personally prefer a bit of cayenne-type heat, something a little sweeter perhaps, with my fried chicken to balance out the batter. This also lasted me two meals so... what can I complain about? My friend who got the quinoa salad was a little confused by the sparse quinoa, considering it's a ....quinoa salad?? We also got drinks, and one of us asked for an amaretto sour, but was brought the chamomile apricot sour, which is on their cocktail menu. I was considering getting it, so I told the waitress I'd just take it instead of her having to throw it out. I was still charged for it, and while it's not a big deal, I do generally think that most restaurants would've taken it off the bill since it was ultimately her mistake. Other than that, we had a pleasant time and enjoyed our food and drinks. I think the chamomile apricot sour actually could've used some more tartness running through it, but it was fine. The Fitzroy was the perfect choice for a Thursday night out with friends. Had a really good experience at Fitzroy. Went for a UVA Club of Charlottesville happy hour with a few friends from work - the interior is really charming, with an industrial, 1920s feel. We sat at the bar and ordered a few drinks - tried the Southside (New Amsterdam gin, mint, fresh lime, and angostura) and the Hermosa (lunazul silver tequila, grapefruit cordial, Campari, San Pelligrino Grapefruit) which were super yummy!! The Southside kind of tasted like a lemon drop - delicious with a balanced tartness. The Hermosa was also good. I'm usually hesitant to drink grapefruit flavored drinks because of the bitterness but this was definitely worth it (Also really visually appealing). For food, I tried their $10 fried chicken sandwich. I was pleasantly surprised with how big the sandwich was. The chicken was juicy and well seasoned. I do wish it had a bit more of the aioli and it doesn't come with any sides, but nonetheless I enjoyed the food and it was a really good accompaniment to the drinks I ordered. read more

The Fitzroy is one of my favorite places to recommend to friends when they ask for a fancier dinner, delicious brunch, or great happy hour. The interior is stunning. It reminds me of the 1920s, giving off a retro, Gatsby-like vibe. Grab a cocktail and seat at the bar or take a spot in a comfortable booth or high-top table. They offer happy hour drink and appetizer deals in addition to full lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch service. I went here with a friend for a prix fixe Valentine's dinner and was blown away. Their options were phenomenal. Bacon-wrapped dates, spring salad, fried chicken and waffle bites, or oysters for the appetizer; choices of meat, fish, or truffle risotto for the entree; and option of cheesecake or a raspberry flourless chocolate torte for dessert. We were even given a complimentary glass of champagne to start with, and the service was prompt. The highlight, of course, was the actual food. I've truly never had such a delicious flourless chocolate torte - it was like fudge drizzled with fresh raspberry reduction. The truffle mushroom risotto was amazingly good and filling. My only regret is that I never made it to their brunch buffet ($18/person) on Sundays. It's at the top of my list to try next time I'm in Charlottesville! read more

What a complete treat it was to dine at this fantastic local spot! The Fitzroy offers nostalgic ambience with a modern flair. First and foremost, the COVID precautions were above average - very impressive policies in place to create a safe and comfortable environment for everyone. They have limited seating as it is so be sure to call shrewd for reservations. The bar offers seating - with a direct view to 3 large screen TVs - perfect for sports. The high tables are free standing tables with barstools heights seating. Then booths. Our party of 3 was super comfortable in the booth with clear views of the TVs to watch Football. The service is fast and friendly. The food is rich and amazing! I had the fish tacos - and would hands down get them again. My son had the famous fried chicken - it didn't disappoint and lived up to the hype. My husband got the smash burger. While it was tasty, he said he'd likely not get that again, and instead get the fried chicken :) They don't have dessert, but no worries! The downtown mall has you covered! The fried chicken sandwich is everything I could've wanted from a weekend trip down to Charlottesville, and it was only $10. Sure it doesn't come with fries but honestly, it doesn't need em at all. It's gigantic, crispy, and comes with 2 pieces of juicy fried chicken, not just one which was a nice surprise. It's got great balance too, just needs a little more hot sauce if only because the hot sauce is dope, adding a little bit of kick without being overpowering. The wings sounded incredible and they were enjoyable but didn't blow me away. I just wasn't crazy about the rub that was on them. We recently did a Sunday meal from Fitzroy during Quarantine. It was 8 pieces (probably 10 actually but some were small) of fried chicken, 4 biscuits, a large side of Mac and cheese, a small side of pimento cheese, and a small side of slaw. Oh, and a bottle of sparkling wine. It was amazing. Seriously. I can't even eat dairy and I still ate more than I should have between the chicken, biscuits and slaw. The waitstaff was friendly and catered to our needs well. For example, we sat outside to immerse ourselves in our surroundings, but as the sun set, we eventually got too cold and asked to move inside. They gave us no hassle with that move, and made it clear that they valued our comfort and experience. I was disappointed by the pricing of the food, as the portions were small, and no entree is served with a side dish. Although I did enjoy my fried chicken sandwich, I paid $10 for it plus $5 for a side of fries. In total, I paid $15 + tip and tax (about $20) for what was essentially a fancy chick-fil-a meal. Thank you, Fitzroy, for the lovely dinner I had on my last night in Charlottesville! What a treat! I was fortunate enough to stop in during restaurant week so I really had the deal of a lifetime. First of all, the Fitzroy is located in the outdoor mall area of Charlottesville. The building has a nice 20s feel to it on the inside and a lovely patio outside where you can engage in some great people-watching. Since it was restaurant week, I was able to try a number of items from the menu. I started off with the French 75 cocktail which was delicious and perfect for the warm summer weather. As an appetizer I tried the buttered shrimp and it was fantastic! The shrimps were large and succulent. I followed with the fish and a side of their duck fat potatoes and those potatoes were so good! The fish was also very fresh and pleasantly seasoned. I really enjoyed my meal! While I barely had an space for dessert, I made a go with it and had the strawberry shortcake - it was the perfect dessert portion and I really enjoyed it. The menu had so many additional items that I wanted to try and I really cannot wait to go back next time I am in Charlottesville. I should also add that our service was excellent. We came to Charlottesville for an during a weekend getaway hiking Shenandoah National Park. We were looking for a cozy spot for pre-dinner drinks and The Fitzroy was exaclty that! We arrived around 6:15, and managed to snag 2 cozy chairs at the end of the bar. It was great seats, truly, right next to the bar so we had privacy yet views of the entire restaurant. The place was cozy (except as the frigid air blew in as the door opened) and intimate, low lighting and fun ambiance. The demographic was a mix of couples-night-out, first dates, and friends out for drinks. Like I said, we came here for drinks, and were planning to do dinner afterwards - so we fought our temptations to order everything off the menu, and instead just opted to share one small plate with our drinks. We ordered the Nola BBQ Shrimp. This was AMAZING! Looks simple at first glance, grilled shrimp, nola seasoning, goodwin creek baguette - but NOPE. There's a warmth to the flavor, with some hint of sweetness (almost a balsamic?), the flavor is intense yet not overwhelming. Thank goodness for the baguette, because even though the shrimp were gone, I managed to scoop up every ounce of that sauce that I could! For drinks, my husband ordered the House Old Fashioned (surprise, surprise) - Bullet Rye Bourbon, malted barley syrup, angostura, and orange bitters; he said it was great. I went with the House Tonic, which was homemade tonic with muddled citrus and Hendrix Gin. It was really yummy! A bit on the sweeter side, as if they added simply syrup, so might be hard to drink without the accompaniment of a small plate for snacking. Super solid american food. Everything I've tried here has been pretty good. The hanger steak is probably my go to. Cooked medium to medium rare... super juicy and the perfect amount of chewy. One person in my group got the shrimp boy and totally raved about it. I tried a bite and it was super flavorful and crunchy. We're visiting Charlottesville for the night and decided to stop here for dinner. We made reservations which are a must, the restaurant was very packed and busy which makes sense for a Friday night in a college town. We sat at the high top tables across the bar because those were the only seats available at the time and let me tell you - this place is a hot spot for UVA students. Our reservation was at 7:30 but it was LOUD the entire time. We could barely hear each other over dinner and we kept getting pushed and shoved by younger students the whole time so we could barely enjoy our meal. I totally get it's a college area and downtown is the spot to be, but I wouldn't recommend The Fitzroy if you are looking to have a nice meal and good conversation because you won't be able to hear over the screaming and yelling. The food was pretty good, we ordered the fried chicken, house salad, and burger - the fried chicken was really good but I was disappointed because the burger came out ~10 minutes after the fried chicken and it was cold. Brilliant restaurant week menu with wide variety of dishes to choose from and good price - $29 per person. Highly recommend the rockfish dish - fish was cooked to perfection. Fried oyster sliders for appetizers were great as well. Recommend booking in advance for the weekends as tables sell out fast. My colleagues and I came here 3 times for lunch in the summer of 2019 while in Charlottesville on business. The $12 lunch menu is a good deal for the quality and quantity of food you get. The restaurant has a pretty swanky interior, with beautiful tiling, very solid hightop tables, and booths along the wall (including a few of those round ones that remind me of Mad Men for some reason). There are also a few hightop tables outside, which make for good people-watching if the weather's nice. The 1st time I came here, I got the fried chicken sandwich, since it seemed to be The Thing To Get. It was a pretty massive sandwich, like a make-you-want-to-nap-after-lunch quantity of food, especially since I went with the side of sweet potato fries. It was good, but not as great as I'd hoped. I found the chicken to be a bit dry and maybe I would've preferred more aioli. The 2nd time, I got the Waldorf chicken salad sandwich, which I really enjoyed. I got a kale salad as my side that time, and when I ordered it without croutons or cheese, I was warned that the salad came with dressing in it and that the dressing had dairy. Not sure if you could ask for it to come without dressing, but the dressing already on the salad + the thing of dressing on the side felt a bit like too much dressing to me haha. My 3rd and last visit, I got the "Perfect Sandwich" BLT. It was very satisfying, but somewhat less memorable than the Waldorf chicken salad sandwich, which wound up being my favorite of the 3. The food and ambiance made up for the service, which was very slow, although the staff were friendly and seemed to be working hard. Disappointing experience. Arrived for a late lunch pre-movie and we were literally the only people seated in the dining area, a few couples at the bar. Music so loud we could barely talk. Waitress brought us water promptly and then completely disappeared. Finally flagged down another waiter and our waitress eventually emerged from the back to serve our food, which had been sitting on the pass for five minutes. Staff far more likely net rested in each other than their customers. Burger was very good, no blue cheese available, only American. Club sandwich well- prepared. All sides extra, which seems greedy given the prices. Fries were left over from lunch, reheated in oil and served barely warm , seriously over cooked and chewy from their double oil bath. Go to citizen burger bar-- you'll eat better and the service will be better, too. One year later..., Seduced by the outdoor tables, we have this place another shot: both food and service dramatically improved. Went there today for brunch. I tried everything except the grits and the veggie frittata (didn't eat because they are just not my cup of tea). Everything else was delicious. Fried Chicken thighs were seasoned perfectly and waffles were soft and warm. Eggs could have been better, but definitely not a deal breaker. Now I only gave it 4 stars because the cinnamon buns had good flavor but were wayyy to hard. I think the holding container continues to cook them instead of just keeping them warm and soft. They gave such good potential, but just miss the mark. Maybe they should consider a stem table or something else. If you want a good brunch definitely try here. read more

The Fitzroy has the best fried chicken in Charlottesville, hands down. My first few visits I varied my order, but the fried chicken sandwich, or fried chicken entree are where it's at. Everything else I've ordered (pork chop, shortrib stroganoff, risotto) were all okay, but they weren't worth ordering twice. Now when I recommend the Fitzroy to anyone I specify that I'm telling them to go here to get fried chicken. The indoor portion of the restaurant can be pretty loud, but they have two outdoor sections as well, one right outside the entryway with high top tables, and one in the middle of the mall with regular tables. Dogs are welcome in either outdoor section. They also have a pretty great brunch on Sundays. It also heavily features fried chicken (and waffles). They also have biscuits and gravy, bacon, sausage, eggs, cinnamon buns, breakfast potatoes, and fruit. It's all set up buffet style and you pay $18 and can go back up as many times as you'd like. It's a pretty fantastic deal. TLDR: Go here, bring your dog, eat fried chicken. read more

I was pretty excited to try out this new place where Blue Light Grill used to be. Drinks are good, food has too much butter/cream/salt to taste any of the natural flavors of the ingredients. Companions had burger, which was decent looking. However we got a huge pork roast that was undercooked in the middle. Beef stroganoff was lacking in umami from the flavor of the meat itself and instead was propping itself up with butter. Overall, you'll be lured here by the 4 stars...but think twice. read more

We were in Charlottesville on a day trip and arrived around 2 pm so decided to have lunch first. There were plenty of choices on the historic pedestrian mall and the Fitzroy looked like the best casual place for a quick bite. For one thing they had a $12 lunch menu served till 4. This is a fairly traditional sports bar with an attractive interior - green walls, black and white checkered tiled floors, nice rounded booth seats, narrow long high tables parallel to the bar with three big TVs. There is also a patio in front with high tables. The lunch deal lets you choose a sandwich and a side, or just salad with protein. Service was very good even though the waitress was new but was friendly and quite willing to find out answers to questions she couldn't answer. I had a shrimp po'boy and sweet potato fries, others had burger and chicken sandwich with sides of salad (the kale Caesar was not bad), and one had Cobb with chicken. Portions were good, sweet potato fries were great, but the shrimps in the po'boy were just about the smallest and toughest I'd ever had and not at all tasty - I actually didn't think it was the right order at first because I couldn't find any shrimps. My friends dishes seemed to be ok - they at least looked like what they were supposed to be, but the shrimp po'boy was so shockingly substandard they should do something to improve the shrimp quality or just take it off the menu. read more

My friend and I chose The Fitzroy after browsing a few brunch menus, and The Fitzroy offered plenty of delicious options, buffet style, at only $18. I am usually skeptical of buffets, but the menu wasn't too extensive so that they could execute each dish well. We arrived a little after 10:30, and by 11:15, when we left, the restaurant was packed. Once seated, our waiter gave us plates. I tried everything on the buffet line-- everything was extremely delicious but also extremely rich. Scrambled eggs - super soft, buttery, and creamy Fried chicken and waffles - didn't care that much for the chicken itself and found it very greasy especially since it was dark meat. The waffle was fluffy and tender and they had soft whipped butter and maple syrup to serve with it. Vegetable frittata - didn't care too much for this either and preferred the scrambled eggs Bacon and sausage - you could tell the bacon was very high quality and cooked perfectly between crispy and chewy. The sausages were succulent and tasty, but a little too greasy for my taste. Sausage gravy and biscuits - both were very flavorful but both were a little dry. Shrimp and grits - by far my favorite part. The shrimp were large and cooked perfectly and the grits were super buttery and creamy. I thought individually each dish was good, but all together, the whole meal was very rich and greasy to the point that I felt very heavy afterwards. I wish they had more vegetable items to cut through the fat and richness of the meal. We sat inside the restaurant, which was very dark and kind of gloomy-- not ideal for a morning brunch. Service was very, very nice and attentive. I also got a mimosa which was very tasty (and strong!). Overall, I am unsure I would return because of the food and the atmosphere. read more

French onion dip was outstanding. Reuben was ok, no complaints but would get something else next time. Had 4 oyster rockafeller for $12 very costly dish and didn't care to much for it. This is one of the only traditional breakfast buffet in Charlottesville; for $18 per person you get an all you can eat southern breakfast buffet - shrimp & grits, fried chicken, biscuits, eggs, waffles, breakfast potatoes, and fruit. The food was all OK, but we did wish there were a few green or fresh options, like a salad or avocado etc. I'll admit that we're vegetarians and it seems like the fried chicken was the real appeal here. If you're not feeling particularly hungry, you could easily split this with a friend. The sides are à la carte, so make sure to try the brussel sprouts! A few other highlights would include a pretty solid gin and tonic, as well as a tasty cookie in a skillet for dessert. This places has good American fanfare. The decor was classy and casual. I stopped in Charlottesville for lunch before heading to the blue ridge mountains. The pictures on yelp looked amazing, so I decided to stop by. They have a great lunch menu and I opted for the shrimp po boy with the roasted corn salad. YUM! Instead of a French roll, they use ciabatta bread with right amount of lettuce, tomatoes and jumps shrimp. The corn salad is chilled, perfect on a hot afternoon. It's a great portion with corn, tomatoes and cucumbers. I was with my dog for lunch and we sat on the patio. There wasn't a big lunch rush while I was there, so we were in and out pretty quickly. I love that the restaurants on the mall all have extended patios and it's pedestrians only, great for people watching. read more
