The Ford may be to The Bowl as a quickie in the elevator is to a rose-petal trail to a big honeymoon suite bed. The "Cinderella" of venues, it takes the grand, outdoor setting of the Bowl (concrete Jerusalem gates carved into the Hollywood hills) and the intimacy of a backyard party. With 1200 seats (opposed to 17500), you're always under 100 feet from the stage. The seats being steeply raked means you are closer to the stage than the Greek. (The Theater, I mean, not loud, hairy Niko guy next to you). And being tucked into a natural canyon makes the acoustics extra crispy, which made Erasure (10 years ago today) one of my favorite concerts. Side note: I found the 3 tickets on ebay for 99 cents, something that pissed off the guy next to me who paid $200. He Loved to Hate Me. He called me "Biggie Fries" all night, referencing Wendy's Value Meal. Built in 1920 by Christine Wetherill Stevenson, a wealthy heiress who wanted to build a space for her play about he life of Christ "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Calvary". No, it was "Pilgrimage Play" It burnt down in 1929 but rebuilt in 1931 to look like stone, making it feel like an ancient, rediscovered space. Anyway, it only hosted Christ plays (I would have called it "Nailed iT!") until the 1964 separation of church and state opened the venue to all arts. It was named after the county supervisor John Anson Ford, who was a champion of the arts. In the late 80's it was the "West Coast CBGB", hosting Ramones, Social D, X, Chili Peppers and Jane's Addiction. If you need more bands, just use your first three Wordle guesses: Tacos Marry Happy opened for Radio Caulk Barfy. It unveiled a $80 million renovation in 2017, so if it was gorgeous in 2006, I am sure it is Gorgeouser now. In 2019, the LA Phil took over, so now it is the little sister of the Bowl and Disney Concert Hall. In 2020, it had its centennial, marking 100 years since Stevenson first staged a Christ play in that canyon. To celebrate, the partygoers turned wine into pee. read more

I've attended the FlyPoet event for several years now with my sister at The Ford Theater. She bought chicken strips and fries from the food court area. She paid extra for ranch dressing. When she got to her seat, she noticed ranch dressing had expired. I offered to take it back & get her refund. I asked for the manager. The staff asked why & was there a problem. I said yes, food quality. They asked what. I said expired ranch dressing. They called & she apologized and said mine was the only one. She opened a new box of dressing & asked if I wanted a refund. I said yes. She said she needed the receipt. I explained I came on behalf of my sister who wasn't able to come back to the food court. She insisted that she needed the receipt for the refund. I asked her where did she think my sister got the expired ranch dressing from. I returned to our seats & told my sister what the manager said. My sister said they didn't give her a receipt; it's on her phone. I didn't return to the food court. My sister said it was not worth the hassle. But she was very upset. VERY unprofessional. Sometimes, I forget how much entertainment is available in LA, from theaters to museums to outdoor excursions and more. I had previously seen advertisements for The Ford LA through various outlets, but I am frequently reminded of my introversion and often avoid driving through LA traffic. However, my wife wanted to check out the The Natural World of Studio Ghibli, and what a night it was! We have seen nearly all of Miyazaki's creations, but this was our first time watching "Howl's Moving Castle" in an outdoor theater. It was lovely! Fresh air, a few butterflies flying across the projector, stars in the night sky, and the iconic backdrop were some highlights to mention. The Ford is as fun as advertised, and I've already begun recommending it to my friends. This place has history, and you can feel it! Additionally, there isn't a bad seat in the house! We sat in Row P, and when I arrived, I took it all in. There's certainly a bit of magic here. The only negative is the parking. It's stacked parking, so you may end up waiting on other visitors to get to their cars before you can even think about moving. It had been several years since I saw the movie Get Out and Halloween was the perfect holiday to reprise its screening. I used the Cahuenga park and ride which had plenty of shuttles and then was dropped off to the venue. The venue is great with lighting and intimate atmosphere. We were able to bring in our own snacks which made the film watching even better. Came with several friends and made new friends with those in our row. Restrooms were well stocked and had plenty of staff checking their cleanliness throughout the screening. read more

Absolutely loved my concert here!. It was my first time here and enjoyed the intimate outdoors setting. The staff was wonderful and helpful while locating our seats. Unfortunately, the concert I attended did not allow phones, so no photos this time. I will say you can bring your own everything, food, wine, snacks. They also have food and wine vendors with pretty decent food an drink choices. I recommend parking and a rideshare lot, and take the shuttle or Uber to the venue. Parking is awful at the venue, they triple park your car, which make leaving a nightmare. Other than parking. Everything else was beautiful. Oh for my stiletto folks, it's not stiletto friendly. I'll admit it, I love my little life! I have an affinity for solo adventures and live music. My recent trip to The Ford was the perfect combo of the two. Although, I have never been to the Ford previously, I've heard many positive things. Someone likened it to a "baby hollywood bowl" and that was the perfect description. Beautiful outdoor venue. Pro tip: Drinks are pricey (paid $15 for a seltzer) so having a few sips of wine before leaving the house was a good choice. I went to see The Mizell brothers produced music, put on by Jazz is dead. Absolutely spectacular show with incredible talent. I am so lucky to have bought my tickets to the show early and snagged such an awesome seat. (Pro tip 2: if you can get your tickets early, do it. You'll be able to snag a great seat) Totally lovely time at the Ford. I already bought tickets to 2 more shows which means i'll be back very very soon. read more

Okay, so The Ford is definitely and interesting venue! I know a lot of reviewers have compared it to the Hollywood bowl, which is legit just across the 101 freeway. However, there were some major hiccups that I found to make it not as desirable as the bowl. Parking: this is the worst experience so far! The show started at 8pm, we arrived at 815 and all the parking was closed. I will explain why this was probably the case. However we live SUPER close and I wasnt drinking, so I didn't mind driving. Not realizing that there isn't much to the ford's parking area. We ended up having to park at the bottom of the hill, and then walk up which took a while and in the summer...I was definitely sweating! Entrance: I don't think I've ever been to a venue in LA where it was impossible to easily spot the entrance. This venue does use a ton of shuttles, and a lot of them block the walkway up to the entrance. So this is probably why. Food and drink: I love that there is a little mini market where you can get snacks and drinks (non alcoholic and alcohol). Seats and show: so I saw Guster with the LA philharmonic. This means that the show actually started at 8pm, unlike any other concert you will see. Which is why parking was full by 815 and the show ended at 930! The venue is an outdoor amphitheater, so the ambiance is amazing and I don't think there is a bad seat in the theater. Overall, my only hang up is the lack of parking. So my suggestion is regardless of how close you live or if you are sober, it's best to just uber to the venue! Also be aware that the show ill be over by 930 and start on time! read more

Great outdoor venue to see a show. The size is much smaller than neighboring open theater spaces but still draws in full crowds. Despitie the small size, there is still great seating options at the venue. The seats are auditorium style seats so you may have to stand up to make room for people shuffling past you. Better to arrive early by a few hours if you'd like to picnic before your show, otherwise the lines can get really long closer to the showtime. There is a security checkpoint at the ticket entrance. Parking options are onsite or from other nearby paid lots that have shuttles waiting. From Ovation Hollywood parking, you can follow the same shuttle signage for Hollywood Bowl attendees; employees will direct you to the correct Ford Ampitheater shuttle. It is not recommended to park onsite because it is stacked parking which means everyone has to be leaving at the end of the show in order to get out of the parking area; however this is still an option to consider if you arrive hours early to your show. read more

What a beautiful intimate outdoor venue on the Hollywood hills!! How does a person (me) that loves live music and concerts did not know this venue existed until August 3, 2021?! Shame on me! We were here to see an intimate concert by LA Phil for essential and law enforcement workers. Conductor Christopher Rountree lead the Chamber Music with the LA Phil. What a stunning performance and we were lucky to have gotten 2nd row seats! I hope some of my favorite artists will start to perform here as we are living in a covid-19 pandemic world now and outdoor venues will be my first priority to concerts, (at least for now) Like the Hollywood Bowl you can bring your own food and drinks inside or you can buy food their. Todo Verde, their cater has delicious tacos there! We got the jackfruit taco and mushroom mole tacos. Outstanding!! It has 2 picnic patios with tables and chairs on the main level and terrace level. They sell drinks and food that you can eat out or take it in the Auditorium. My suggestion is NOT to eat or drink during the show as you can annoy people next to and around you by taking your mask off! read more

Loads of ambience this outdoor venue is such a good place to see music. I've seen a few shows here. I saw Guster here accompanied by LA Phil latest visit. It was so good. The only downside is that parking is a mess so if you could manage to walk here, which I'm lucky enough to be able to, you are set. Of special note, you could bring your own food and wine. Don't bring hard alcohol. They will not let you bring it in and goes for a thermos i.e. hot soup, etc. etc. for security reasons. What are you waiting for? I lived over this way for seven years plus, and once I moved to the other side of town, I finally had a chance to visit The Ford Amphitheater. Although it still appears to be currently closed, there was a recent screening for an AppleTV+ program. I figured I never saw the show, never been to the venue, so knock out two birds with one stone. I knew it would become a little chilly come nightfall, so I'm glad I dressed appropriately. You entered the area and a guy working there directed you down a narrow curvy road to the main parking area. This parking was stacked which i was a little put off by, but several attendants were there to guide you into the spot with no issue. I was grateful to be the very last car in one of those stacked lines, so I ended up having an easier exit. Had to wait outside until they allowed entry but once in, be prepared for a lot of steps, although I'm sure there was an elevator somewhere. On one level were the restrooms (the women's is kind of a trek compared to the men's location) and then up some more stairs where there are several doors leading to seating. As for that, I was fortunate to be on the lower center level and due to safety protocols, there was an empty row in front and behind, and I only had 2 other people in my row down the way. I was very pleased with this as I hate it when people are right on you (yeah, I don't go out much anymore) and someone starts getting on their phone during...don't get me started. Back to the topic at hand, the Ford was the setting for a lovely evening, and I would gladly go back again, even though they may start opening things up more as we go back to a sense of 'normalcy'. read more

This is one of Los Angeles' treasured gems! The Ford Theaters is located in the Hollywood Hills, a bit close to the larger Hollywood Bowl. It is an outdoor theater with a great sound and light system. I can honestly say that there is not a bad seat in the house! I truly love the yearly curated, diverse, all-inclusive program which is a mixture of movie screenings, dance, performance, comedy and music. With the stars above and the trees towering around us, this venue is made for Los Angeles' beautiful weather. Parking is stacked so I always have to prepare myself in leaving the venue. Luckily, there isn't much around the theater so people tend to not mill around after a show. Last night, it took me less than 15 mins, with me sitting in my car for 8 minutes of it. They also have small indoor theaters for more intimate shows. Ford Theatres is a venue we must take pride in and protect, whether you are a tourist, a transplant or a long-time resident of LA. read more

Very cozy venue for small scale events. Looks well maintained and clean. You can bring wine and snacks in here. We didn't get metal forks and knives just to be on the safe side. Security was very friendly and easy going. Staff was very friendly and help us get seated. The sound was pretty decent. Parking was $12. There's 2 parking lots and they aren't big so the cars are parked in a stacking order so you may not be able to leave before the event ends and all the cars in front of you leave. We got free tickets to see Calexico on a Friday night and we had a lot of fun. I'd be happy to be back. read more

Live very close to the theater and was waiting for it to open after the remodel. Came for the first time to watch the movie, the shining in partnership with Street food cinema. Ample parking but stacked parking. Very attentive, well-dressed employees and staff. A special canine to check for bombs, etc. Felt very welcomed and safe there. Watched the Dodgers on the outdoor TV while we ate our food before the movie started. Very lovely display of fog on the ground surrounding the theater. The sound was lovely. It was nearly sold out, and every single staff member was very very accommodating. Beautiful venue I highly recommend this place. My only complaint is the majority of all of their acts that perform here are unknown. Maybe they ought to give us more information on their artist that do perform there. And possibly branch out and get more acts that are different than what they have. Maybe some classic 70s bands or something more mainstream. Hope to come back! read more

The Ford Theater is located near Universal Studios. Make sure you have directions to get there, if you get turned around it is not fun. It is right off the 101. The theater is stunning. It is outdoors and is a smaller venue which is great, but large enough to draw great acts, from Classical to Blues. They have something for everyone and going there is such a treat. The place is just so beautiful. It is built right into the Hollywood Hills, and the stage is backed into a wonderful hill with trees and brush. The stage appears to made of redwood, but maybe it is just the stain color. It is also beautiful. The entire area feels like you have left the City and entered Big Sur, without the redwood trees. It even smells fresh and calming. The seats are comfortable and there is not a bad seat in the house. You will be able to see the stage from anywhere, no view is obstructed. The sound system is amazing. You will be able to hear from where ever you are and it will sound great, it also will not be so loud you want to cover your ears. Now, the parking is stacked, so get there early because it is limited. If it fills you will end up down the street and you will have to shuttle up. So, get there at least 30 minutes ahead of time, an hour if you want to eat at the restaurant, and get over the fact that you will be in a line of cars to get out. It does not take long. And what is great about the stacked parking is it is right near the entrance--no long walk. It also has security for the entire event. At the gate you will see how pretty The Ford is. Every detail is lovely from the gates to the steps. There are quite a few steps so if you have a hard time walking, take it slow and if in a wheel chair, there are ramps for you and an elevator. Once at the top of the steps, you will see an outdoor area to bring a picnic or go into their restaurant. The restaurant they have at present is very pretty but only serves vegan food, to which I say no thanks. But if that is your thing, the chef is semi-famous. I like the Grab and Go little market they have there. You can bring all manner of food to your seats or sit in the patio area before the show. The Grab and Go market is pricey. Can I please just get an actual bottle of water or a coke and not have to pay for the fancy waters and ever so cool cans of stuff. I mean really. And the food is also expensive and not the best, but good. We had a ham and butter sandwich which was great. We also had mini corn dogs, made with chicken and no sticks and spicy chicken. Both of those were fine, but not that good and for the price they should have been much better. They also were not hot enough. But we love The Ford, and I can't take a star for just okay food, now I know to bring in stuff, including some water or just try other things at the market or hope that get a new chef that will make food that is not just vegan. Once inside the theater you will be helped to your seats and you will just relax. The place is calming and fun. We saw a Blues band, Vintage Trouble, there and danced the night away, but there was always this calmness that ran though you. Everyone was friendly. Don't dress like a slob. You won't fit in, even through it is allowed. Nice jeans and a decent shirt are really the minimum. The entire staff is great. They know this place well, will help and direct you and answer any questions. They are also very calm. It must be in the air. Note the weather because it can get chilly outside in that hilly area. The Ford follows all Covid requirements. You will be vaxed or have proof of a neg. test or you won't get in. You will also wear your mask when you are not eating or you will be told to do so, refuse and out you go. I love that. The staff all have proper masks on the whole time. If you are in town and want to see our best outdoor amphitheater you can't go wrong with The Ford. You can find all events on their web page and their prices for tickets are reasonable--makes up a little for the pricey fancy water. I just can't say enough about The Ford. Go there. read more

I'd somehow never been there. Came with some friends for a Gabriels show and was absolutely floored by how well the venue runs. It feels like the idea here is that you arrive early and grab an outdoor table, where you snack and drink whatever you brought with you, and then at show time you find your seats and settle in. There is also a fully kitted out wine market and various food concessions inside. The grounds have a wonderful, modern feeling, a little brutalist, a little FLW-adjacent, and really a pleasure to walk throught. The sound and lighting was great, the seats are comfortable, and overall the venue has an intimate high quality feeling that we loved. There's a depth to the stage, lots of set pieces and the hillside and trees as a backsplash. Pretty cool. Stack parking was $12 and worth every penny. Our time from seats to street after the show was less than ten minutes total. Where does that happen? I'm thinking of the Ford as the Bowl's sophisticated sibling, and I'm excited to go to another show here. read more

Castle vibes - multiple levels with a market place for beer/bottles of wine/snacks - this is ideal especially since the venue welcomes for outdoor seating/picnics and the like. Incredibly clean and very friendly staff! It's a relatively small but intimate and cozy outdoor theatres with the capacity of 1500, I think. You can get a glimpse of the Hollywood Bowl across the freeway as you go higher on the steps near where the restaurant is. The sound system was a bit too loud for the size of the theatres. The lighting in the backdrop was nice and the weather was perfect tonight for a concert. We did not partake in the restaurant offerings but it seems everyone was ordering French fries that smelled amazing. You can bring your own alcohol and food, there are cup holders in each seat. If you drive, you must park in the lot but it is stacked parking which means you can't leave early if you had to because someone's car is blocking you from leaving. So it's best to take an Uber or Lyft. read more

The Ford Theatres has all of the charm of the Hollywood bowl in a delightfully more intimate space. Sitting on the other side of the 101 freeway, pretty much across from the Hollywood Bowl, it is like the Ford is the little sister. But she stands tall in her own right, with 5 different floors (restrooms are on the 4th floor), and a restaurant at the top floor. (I personally did not check out the restaurant during my visit, but will have to next time.) The amphitheater space is set up so that every seat has a good view of the stage. The stage background has a lovely view of some natural landscaping with colored lights bringing everything alive. Acoustics are great, as well. Stacked parking on-site seems like a hassle, so I would say ride share, metro-ing and shuttling, or off-site parking and shuttling in are the way to go. Don't hesitate to grab tickets for the next event you're interested in at the Ford Theatres. read more

How have I lived in LA for so long without coming here? If you haven't been yet, find a show and go! Think of this spot as the Hollywood Bowl's more quiet sibling. It's literally across from the Bowl, an outdoor theatre carved into the hillside, and you can bring your own food and drinks (no hard alcohol). Everything is just smaller: smaller parking lot, smaller parking cost (only $12), and smaller venue (the theatre only holds 1200!). Seats throughout (no benches) that are pretty roomy. Everyone who worked here was very friendly and helpful. You should go!! read more

I really enjoyed seeing "Considering Matthew Shepard" at this venue. Arrived early with a friend, had wine and cheese at one of the little tables outside, casually, for like 90 minutes, went in and got great seats that were comfortable and relaxing, on a beautiful starry night. I think I found my new favorite music venue. Great location, gorgeous, outdoor, intimate, and just plain easy. I went here recently to see The Tallest Man on Earth perform with Strand of Oaks as an opening act. I had seen them earlier on their tour at the Wiltern, which I thought was an amazing experience until I came here! Traffic getting into the area was horrible (always is), but getting here was so easy. The theater is literally located off the 101N. When you enter, you can get stacked (cars parked in front of other cars) parking for a varying amount ($10). The staff there help you guide your car into a spot. There are also various shuttles that run during the summer time from parking lots elsewhere (free). When I left, I thought it would be nightmarish due to the stacked parking. It was actually relatively painless. I got out of there within 2 minutes! The courtyard is really pretty, and I saw a lot of people eating homemade meals and drinking wine. You can also buy snacks and souvenirs here. I arrived relatively early, but I never once felt like this venue was jam packed, even though it was full. The ushers help you find your seat. If you're in the front row, you're in for a treat, because you can literally extend your leg and touch it if you're tall enough. You're so close! It's a fantastic view, too. You can sit and gaze at the mountainous landscape until the sun goes down. Acoustics are great here. And if the weather is nice, you get a pleasant outdoor experience that is really comfortable. Came for the Stranger Things Season 3 screening with a moderated conversation with David Harbour! The venue is beautiful! Parking onsite is tricky with their stacked car policy, even more challenging when time to "leave". Let's just say it isn't a feat for the faint of heart! The upstairs dining had a decent selection but pretty pricey (i.e. 2 sliders were $9 and together did not make up the size of a normal hamburger) and dinner for 4 (3 of which were kids) with no alcohol came to $77 - yikes! Patrons CAN bring in picnics and beer and wine which makes it a delightfully affordable option. Staff were over the top friendly and seemed genuinely thrilled you were there! Can not wait to return for another over the top event! Hard to top Stranger Things 3 screening 4 days before the release - pretty epic! read more

Great venue. Wife & I went to see the 2018 LOST "We Have To Go Back" concert there on 9/15/18. Not a bad seat in the house. Parking is a bit of a nightmare, so I'd recommend finding a shuttle & parking off site. Food & drink are insanely expensive inside the venue, so eat before you arrive. As an example - we got a chocolate chip cookie & a fountain Diet Coke for $12. Laughable. Knowing the small details will make your experience great. Lovely & Newly refurbished Theatre! Nestled in the Hollywood Hills. We took the Park & Ride Shuttle the theater offers which was Great! We arrived an hpur prior to show and enjoyed Pur Picnic lunch we brought with us. Yhere were several Tables spread out so you can eat & enjoy the Scenary!
