I've always been an advocate for giving gifts of experience versus gifts of material things. Last Friday, I decided to surprise my husband to David Minkin's magic show as a birthday gift, and man the show did not disappoint! From start to finish, my husband and I had our jaws on the floor. The magic show was intimate (around 40 people or so in the room), original, and absolutely mind blowing! We could not believe our eyes. For the entirety of the show, it seems as if our vocabulary was limited to "WOW!!!!" "HOW?!?!" and "NO WAYY!!!!" We simply did not have the words to express our amazement. We were seated on the second row, and I recall forcing myself to keep my eyes open and not blink just to see if I can catch him, but to no avail. The magic that David performs is truly next level. They're so original and creative and completely unpredictable! You simply cannot anticipate the outcome of each trick. You THINK you know what he'll do with a deck of cards, or a marble, or even a packet of sugar, but in reality, you never know. The entire performance was 5-STAR all around. Highly recommended! Excellent show. Appetizers was very good Nice variety and combination. We had 5 flights of wine. First two was white. Last two were red and the fifth could be any wine you wanted. They did a very good job at explaining each glass of wine. I felt like I was at a wine tasting lol. Oh and the appetizers was all very good. Especially those stuffed mushrooms. Super delicious. . I must have eaten at least 5 or more. :) David's magic show is up close and personal. He actually interacts with his audience so that you can see everything. They ask you to sit up on the stage with him. I actually saw him perform in Anaheim, California. It's where he performs every friday. He also is a very funny guy. I don't want to tell you the show but let's just say he was able to tell me what card i was thinking about and that was from my seat. That was pretty impressive! His assistant Caroline was very nice and informative. This is perfect for Date night or just hanging out with family and friends. I would highly recommend this show to Tourist and locals. I even saw two kids in the audience enjoying the show. Minus the wine of course. Wow I'm so happy to be an adult I get to enjoy a good show and adult beverages.. lol. So enjoy the show. It's a magical event! LITERALLY. Wine, appetizers, a wonderful staff and an excellent magician make this a day to remember. I brought my 21 year old niece, I wanted her to experience Malibu and something different. She was pretty happy that Robert Kardashian was filming a reality dating show and they ended up joining us however at the end if he day the magic was more exciting and David was the star. After wine upstairs we head to the wine cellar for the magic and we are up front and CLOSE - David is FANTASTIC, turning around every skeptic in the audience. He did some amazing card tricks with my niece, bent MY quarter, I could go on but GO and see for yourself. Worth very penny. Simply memerizing! Came here tonight to cash in on a present from XMas. The wine portion of the evening was well worth the admission. Allen and Caroline were both friendly and knowledgeable. After an hour of wine tasting, we were led to the room where David performed his show. I don't want to ruin it for anyone, but take a look at my rating and you can tell that I walked away impressed. The settings were intimate since only a limited # of seats are sold each evening. The illusions were refreshing and different than others I've seen in Vegas; it was really amazing to see a master magician at work. I had the privilege to get to see Minkin's outstanding performance firsthand in a private show for my proposal due to my fiancés romanticism. He astounded my friends and me and I just knew I had to go visit his show one day. I ended up purchasing two tickets to Magic and Wine for the hubby's birthday. They first start you off to relax and unwind with couple of wines and appetizers which includes fruits, snacks, crackers, skewers, and etc. They also explain the wine in a detailed manner. After you get a little tipsy, they then lead you into a separate room to enjoy the magic show. I thought that since I already saw him perform once, I wouldn't be as impressed. But I was wrong. I sat in the front row and I watched him intently without blinking to make sure there was no funny business. There was none and he performed perfectly. I think he sold his soul to the devil. Magic show review David has put together one great evening. I found out about this show while searching the web for events that included wine and magic. Two of my wife's favorite things. First off the wine was delicious. It was very cool to be able to talk to the Vintner while tasting the local wines. After the wine you are led down to a basement were the real "Magic" begins. I have always been very skeptical about magic. There has to be some way to explain it, right? But after seeing David do his thing, I am completely blown away!!! This is one magic show that you do not want to miss. Tip: Bring a business card. If you leave it in the bowl at registration, you may get an invite to the Magic Castle. David Minkin is truly a master of magic. Every time he puts on a show, it's awe-inspiring. I've seen him numerous times, and I always go away wondering, "how did he do that??" He is best seen up-close and in person, where you can keep a close eye on what he's doing and try to discover his secrets (though you never will). His performance at the Evening of Enchantment provides the perfect opportunity to do exactly that. The small, intimate setting in the cellar of the Beaurivage restaurant puts you right in front of him, where you can scrutinize his every move. The wine tasting is a nice prelude to the show. The Beaurivage, on the coast of Malibu, provides an intimate and romantic atmosphere. It's an excellent choice if you want to impress your date. I myself, am extremely skeptical of magic, and was curious to see how the night would unfold. I took my boyfriend to this event for a gift, and I had such great reviews I thought it would be great! To me it was, okay. I did the event at Bardot in January 2013, and the so called 'food' was quite literally crackers with cheddar cheese, grapes, and mediocre chicken skewers. I read these reviews about the good snacks, so I was disappointed and we left hungry. My boyfriend enjoyed the wine, so that was good. The host rushed us through the wine tasting because they were behind on schedule, so that was a little tacky. Everyone had to chug their wines in a sense instead of enjoy them. The pre-get together was boring. We were just in a room sitting there for 2 hours before the show. David's show was cool, and my boyfriend enjoyed it very much. I have seen David perform 4 times, but this was the first time I have been to his Evening of Wine and Magic show in Malibu. 1. Beau Rivage is a beautiful, rustic, Mediterranean restaurant, with great views of the ocean from their dining room and 2nd floor patio. A very romantic atmosphere. 2. The food/appetizers served were fresh and delicious. 3. The wine was from Rosenthal Estate in Malibu and surprisingly good overall. A wine expert from Rosenthal gave the tasting presentation, and the pours were plentiful. 4. David's delivery of close up magic is simply amazing. He has an understated personality, but don't let his easy going charm fool you - you will be blown away by his magic, left scratching your head wondering "how'd he do that?". The owner of the place and his wife are so very friendly! The place is beautiful in an old Italian way! I love love love this place, everyone should go at least once! The top floor over looks the ocean, and it's really pretty... you can even rent it out for a private party, as we did and made the place really special! We had sooooo much fun!!! My bf loves magic so I bought him these as a gift. We're not much into wine and the red was vile to us cheap sweet moscato drinkers (we're unsophisticated) but there was plenty of food (cheese crackers skewers bread bruschetta grapes samosas) to keep us full. The pours were generous and the white wine was pretty good. The magic show was awesome. He got the audience involved and we were even lucky enough to get a souvenir which made the little kid in my bf very happy though he wouldn't admit it. My bf loves magic and knew a lot of the tricks but there were sooo many that even he was impressed and stumped at times. Overall experience very worth it. So when I knew I was going to be able to get an entire evening with him, I was beyond thrilled. The night starts in a gorgeous Hollywood building where you sip wine, nibble and chat with friends. It had that old Hollywood feel. When the magic started, my girlfriends and I sat up in the front row. I saw it all up close and personal and STILL COULDN'T BELIEVE my eyes!! I took my boyfriend to see David Minkin last spring, when he was still performing in Malibu. Unfortunately, the venue suffered fire damage and Minkin was forced to find new places to perform. I hope that the venue reopens, as it was a very cool place for the event. We started the event with wine tasting and hors d'oeuvres in a patio on the second floor of the restaurant. There were four different wines from local wineries, liberally poured and buffet of little bites. Each wine course came with an introduction to the wine and manufacturer. We didn't feel rushed and made friends with the other guests at our table. We were relaxed and tipsy going into the magic show. The show took place in the wine cellar, which held maybe thirty people. It was all close-up magic with lots of audience participation. There was not a bad seat in the room, as it was all very intimate. I do not want to give away a single moment of the show, just to say that Minkin blew me away. I have zero idea how he did any of his tricks, each more impressive than the last. In addition to being an utterly amazing magician, he was very warm and chatting with all of the guests. I had an all around great feeling leaving this event. My only complaint, is the magic portion seemed a bit short. Maybe it just flew by because it was so dazzling and I couldn't help but want for more. If you want to see magic close up and personal then go and see David at his Evening of Enchantment. I am a bit of a sceptic when it comes to 'Magic' so was interested to see if I could 'work out how it was done'. Well I came away convinced that Magic just might be something real. You cannot get closer to the action in the intimate small group setting that David has here, and it is very audience interactive. So when you see the magic performed it will suprise you and convince you. David is the best. Couple this with the nibbles and wine tasting before, and the great setting by the ocean and you will have a wonderful evening. We topped it off within Dinner upstairs, making a really nice evening for the group of us that went. This is the way to see Magic, you have to try it - we were pleased that we did and will not doubt try it again some other time. read more

It was a great venue and definitely a wise choice on my wife's part. The place is really great for couples and for wine lovers. I couldn't say enough good things about this place if I tried, if there is a show when you're in Los Angeles it is definitely somewhere you should go. The magic show was pretty good too, it was definitely a very enjoyable part of our time there apart from the alcohol. I would definitely recommend trying to get seats on the front row, meaning you are much more likely to get involved with the performance. David was definitely an interesting character which is exactly the right kind of person for Magic tricks and he was super friendly and welcoming. To see David work is to see some of magic at its finest.

Sometimes less is more, sometimes it's not. I'll happily admit to being from the MTV school of Too Much Is Never Enough so I have mixed feelings about this show, however David Minkin is one outstanding magician and in fact one of the best, a consummate performer and a true gentleman so I'm rating this higher than I probably would considering everyone at the show seemed wildly enthusiastic about it. The one thing I noticed from the reviews here, are that none of the reviewers seemed like big magic fans or particularly knowledgable about the craft, so keep your expectations at bay if you frequent a lot of magic shows. The setting is lovely, Beaurivage is still beautiful even though you can see the rough edges, the upstairs patio where the wine tasting and hor d'oeuvres are served is comfortable and boasts a gorgeous view of the Pacific. The magic is down in the wine cellar and it's so reminiscent of the settings at Magic Castle, it's uncanny. The food was pleasantly surprising, simple but effective hor d'oeuvres, maybe 8-10 varieties. The wine is courtesy of Rosenthal who used to have a cute little wine tasting room on premises but have recently moved on to new digs. I wasn't a fan of their wines from my previous experiences so I wasn't expecting much here, but they did a nice job of picking four decent tastings. It's supermarket quality wine, but it's adequate. I must admit a little disappointment as somehow I had mistaken the tasting concept for all you can drink in my head. The setting for the show is intimate, our front and center seats were only a foot or so from David himself and the furthest are no more than ten. He gets almost everyone involved at some point which makes it a pretty memorable evening for all. The tricks are small, there are no flamboyant show pieces. Coin tricks and card tricks abound, some very common but so well performed and so closely imagined that they take on a new sense of wonder including a stunning version of levitating and orbiting playing cards. Others are quietly astounding, from a water conjuring trick to a glass bending illusion that I got to keep the resulting wine glass from. There's even a musical interlude involving only crisp guitar playing and no magic. Still, the show seemed somewhat short to me, maybe I just enjoyed it a lot and wished for more but I couldn't help feel that it could have been longer. The magic was stunning and crowd pleasing yet I was a little surprised there wasn't a bigger set piece finale to really put the show over the top. It's quite possible I'm just jaded from some amazing visits to The Magic Castle where you can indulge in as much magic as you can stand in an evening for about the same cost. Looking at the faces of the other patrons as we were leaving and hearing their glowing verbal reviews, I'd say the show is a fabulous success. I'd recommend coming here before a visit to the Magic Caste though, it's hard for one great magician to compete with an ever changing roster of them once you've seen it. One great by product of seeing this is that if you sign the book or leave a card, they'll get you passes for the Castle when David Minkin performs there which he does quite often. David Minkin does a rather shockingly good magic show at the seaside Malibu restaurant, Beaurivage every Sunday -- but don't think Statue of Liberty disappearing -- this is the real stuff -- up close prestidigitation (two feet away from you!) in the shadowy, gran cru packed wine cellar of this grand dame of Mallibu French cuisine. I am not a magic buff, never did a thing for me -- but then I had never seen a man send cards levitating in thin air -- from two feet away -- helicoptering around his hands and the body of a audience member like a fluttery, glittery manic Tinkerbell, for seemingly minutes on end -- from two feet away I could see no visible support, nothing at all, pure air around the flying cards! And Minkin did this with his sleeves rolled up. Rolled up! It makes CGI effects on screen seem absurd. If Minkin had worn long sleeves, Pig woulda simply imagined he had 19 machines jammed into his armpits, firing various crap down into his waiting hands -- but Minkin had bupkus -- bare skin forearms. Drunk as a skunk on local color from four flights of wine upstairs, we sat in a mesmerized dazzle in the wine cellar, sozzled on rather excellent Malibu reds and whites furnished by local winery Rosenthal, whose long-haired biblio-winemaster resembled a black suited rocker for AC/DC. Apres magic, rockervintner schooled us vino-expertly in the upstairs dining room, including an impromptu exegesis on what a 'corked' wine smells like -- mushrooms! - while we ate tasty canapes -- mushrooms! -- and drank before we all tromped to the basement, trooping past the Monsieur sitting at the front desk, looking rather bemused at the upstairs/downstairs fablieux."He (Minkin) will be good, you will see!" Monsiuer chuckled, before explaining to us that no, Beau Rivage has NOT closed -- Monsieur was selling it, but after an eight month escrow, the buyer dropped out, and Monsieur never stopped cranking out the oysters and caviar...and now with Minkin doing a show on Sundays it feels like one of those haute bourgouise holiday hotels in San Sebastian, but with less stern matrons. If upstairs was a cruise ship first night experience, landing at tables at strangers, everyone was quite happily palsy-walsy by the time we hit the cellar, where David's comely/hot partner AJ welcomed us. In the past, when Pig has seen magic on television or in Las Vegas it's always been dull to him -- Pig is so far away that who cares? But when you're watching Minkin live, with his sleeves rolled up, bare armed! - materializing four big coins literally out of thin air, you are so close you could hit him with your merlot, you...just...can't...credit it. Where did the coins come from? It's like taking mescaline -- the effects are lurid, purple, and palpably impossible. Minkin has a water trick which strikes me as gobsmacking, too -- producing it from his palms, with what I assume is some sort of tiny ballon sling shot fired from a secret compartment in his chest cavity -- who knows? Who wants to know -- the trick itself must be so sublimely difficult, and so effective, that all one can do is sit back and be in awe that he could do it at all. Did I mention slow, hovering helicopters of cards that have no visible means of support? These cards do langorous orbits around Minkin, as well as the girls from the audience. Okay, there's probably string somewhere, but again, who cares? You are two feet away. You can see nothing. That is, I believe, called magic. Pig is not that visually sharp, but Party Girl is lightning fast, and she simply couldn't see how Minkin did his bare-armed coin palm materialization, nor his card magic. It's as if Minkin conjured up that transporter from the Trek films, and hooked it to a psychic crystal ball... Lit like a Christmas tree, partying in the Beau Rivage wine cellar... I have a sentimental attachment to Beau Rivage, it's echt Johnny Carson Malibu, and Minkin's show is a perfect way to come back to the venerable grande madame' of Malibu French. The restaurant may be older, the bloom faded, but she's still got good bones, and sets out good silver and fine food, and this fun magic party is a perfect way to enjoy it. Went there mid July for my boyfriends birthday. He loves magic and since there isn't much adult magic events in Los Angeles besides Magic Castle I decided this would be perfect. You walk into Bardot which is the outside side part of Avalon nightclub it looked like. It's outdoor but covered (still warm for Los Angeles, dress casual and light, it's cobblestone like outdoor flooring so high heels get stuck! Flats all the way ). You sit with other people in groups at tables with benches and chairs. At first it was a bit odd but a couple minutes in, it forces you to socialize and meet really great people, and that's what LA is all about. This part will grow on you and you might even make some amazing connections! You are served 4 different wines ( with refills as you choose) and there are grapes, crackers, cheese, and BBQ satay skewers (chicken and beef) You do have to go get up the food buffet style (there's a 5-10 min wait at first, but people start to come up not all at once after that so it's not so bad. )Don't expect a full dinner, but you are paying for nice wine and appetizers and entertainment of course. After an hour of wine and appetizers you go inside a room for close up magic. The room is pretty intimate with about 50 people max it seemed. Its first come first sit style, so we moved quickly when the announcement was made to start sitting , and we got to sit in the front tow literally 5 feet away from David! (Even if you sit in the last row you still are up close) The magic is amazing!! I was so close and still could not figure out what or how he did those tricks. He is an extremely nice guy with a easy going personality. My boyfriend was truly impressed, and David often interacted with the audience which made it more fun. I literally had my face hurting from smiling so hard and so much, I felt like a kid again. The theme itself is very adult, so you don't feel that cliche magic show feel, more of close up entertainment. There was only one huge downfall... DRUNK OLD LADIES. Wow epic fail, there was a group of about 8 of them and boy did they annoy! They started getting too drunk during the appetizer and wine part and of course were laughing hysterically, dropping things, acting belligerent. Then during the show they sat in the front and kept interrupting the magician, kept yelling out random stupid things, just being distracting and embarrassing. The real magic trick was how David the magician didn't strangle these old drunks. He kept extremely professional, and just did the best he could with that mess in the front row. Bravo! Magic and wine is one of the best concepts ever created, not only do you get mentally played with but get an abundance of happy juice at the same time.... Plus a great mixture of cheese, kabobs and fruit. Needless to say this place is magical from the ambiance to the hosts, the location and the decor all have the perfect touch (bottomless wine, well it seemed like it) .....David is incredible and very funny! I was surprised how intimate the show was, it was magic in your face and left us all with a question mark on our forehead!!! I was looking for a unique outing and this place did not disappoint. We had a good time here last night. It was something different to do for a night as a little surprise for my hunny bunz birthday; so glad he enjoyed himself. It took a few minutes for us to recognize where exactly this place was, because we had never been to the Bardot before(needs more/better signs). So we find the entrance and I didnt have to show my ticket, they had a list already printed out with all the names,cool. When you first enter there's wine tasting and hors d'oeuvres(about 5 or 6 different cheeses, chicken and beef meat sticks, veggie pot stickers, crackers, salsa and grapes) for an hour. We tasted 4 wines, 2 reds 2 whites,and of course had the option to buy at the end of the show; but I'm a YELPER so I got a free bottle yaaay!! Lol Next was the magic show. You might want to try and get seated as soon as you can so you can sit up front although there is an intermission so the second half of the show you have another chance to grab a front seat. The intermission is also time to refill your wine glasses, and if you don't drink wine they also had some water and juices available. When the show was over everyone took pictures with the magician, and bought wine, if they ran out they could also ship it to you. They also have a sign up where you give your email or contact information and they will send you invites to Magic Castle, which is by invite only. Magic Castle is another spot where David Minkin the magician also performs. The magic was really good too, especially for being so close up.
