When we arrived, only a couple of other guests were inside, but the place filled up quickly within the hour -- clearly a popular local spot. There are about eight small booths plus counter seating, and service was friendly and fast. I ordered the breakfast sampler (French toast, bacon, sausage, eggs, and toast) with a chocolate milk, and my boyfriend had the same. Everything was cooked perfectly and reasonably priced -- our total was only $33 for both! You can tell this place has a loyal crowd of regulars, and we noticed quite a few people coming in for takeout, too. They get 1 star for not posting CASH ONLY anywhere except behind the register in the wall facing towards the interior of the diner. (See Photo) I am sick and tired of these diners not posting cash only on the door before you enter where it can easily seen. I would had went elsewhere as I forgot my cash at home. Prices were cheaper but so was the food. We go out for breakfast around 3-4x per month. We have been to many, many restaurants for breakfast from Manahawkin to Toms River and this was, by far, the worst. The eggs were OK (scrambled and over-easy) and the coffee was OK. The toast was semi burnt. The potatoes were stale and luke warm--pretty awful. The sausage was cheap supermarket grade--sub par for any restaurant in this area. We hadn't been to this diner is a few years and thought we would try it again. Big mistake--one that we will not make again. You literally can go to ANY other restaurant or diner in the town and do better. The two stars are because the service was adequate and the food came out quickly. read more

This morning I discovered the Forked River diner. I wasn't sure if it was opened based on the 1950's diner exterior but a neon sign in the window said,"Open." When I walked in I felt like I was transported back to the 1950's: like time never touched this diner. I sat at the counter and server named Michelle took my order. I was hungry so I went large. I had the pancakes, eggs, sausage, bacon and toast platter with delicious coffee. Everything was great! Food and service were wonderful! And reasonably priced compared to other diners. If you ever leave NJ, one of the things you will miss most are NJ diners. Forked River Diner seemed like it fit the bill for NJ diner experience I've missed so much. Really old school looking place, but clean. Mozzarella sticks and blueberry pancakes were everything I could have imagined them to be. The sticks were divine, and even the sauce was good. Prices are reasonable (although there is an up charge to swap out breakfast potatoes for tomatoes - something most other places don't charge for). Unfortunately, swapping out the breakfast potatoes is an absolute must because they are completely tasteless. Hot sauce and/or pepper don't even help. I assume no one has told them because they've been this way for WAY TOO LONG for them to know! Avoid those potatoes and you'll like this place. read more

Horrible to the younger crowed. Two local young men.. From the beginning the server just was rude not very welcoming to these two young men.. A young man asked for chocolate milk the server just put the glass of milk on the table you could see the chocolate on the bottom of the glass wasn't even mixed. The other young man asked for a straw and the server just turned and left never came back with his straw... she passed by put the check on the table facing the opposite direction and kept on walking.. The young men were locals i could tell i heard them talking about the high school days.. I love this local diner. Walked in last weekend feeling very tired and just needing some morning comfort food and BAM! the smell of deliciousness hit me like a truck. It smelled like bacon and cinnamon and everything good in between. I'm not joking. The people in there eating looked so happy, great cozy atmosphere like, "you found our happy place"! Seriously! Ordered eggs and bacon and it came with home fries and toast. The coffee sure is good too. Enjoyed a few bites of fluffy pancakes that didn't need butter. I go to breakfast to have the food cooked naturally not nuked. The owner asked my how every thing was and I told him after microwaving my eggs they we warm. Love this place on Saturday or Sunday mornings for breakfast. They make their own corned beef hash which is fantastic (nothing like the canned junk). Also really love their eggs benedict, I order it with porkroll instead of Canadian bacon and it's great. My kids love their pancakes, which are huge. Tonight, I found myself at the very quaint, very rustic Forked River Diner. It's a great little 50's style diner with the amazing burgers and disco fries to boot. This very night, however, was a bit different. First off, my waitress Julie was phenomenal. She was very attentive and eager to please. One of the nicest waitresses I've met in my years on this earth. What I as a yelper, did notice, was that our waitress was the only one working in a fully packed diner. That to me tells me that the owners of this establishment are either unable to afford to hire a bus person to help clean tables or a hostess to ring up tabs. Or sadly they are too cheap to do it and expect one person to be the "backbone" of the diner. What also I did notice was the cook leave promptly at 9 which is closing time, and leave our waitress to clean everything herself. Now in my eyes, this is absolutely no way to run an establishment. Julie, however, was unwavered and pushed forward with a smile. She truly exemplifies what true "customer service" is all about. It's because of her excellence and caring service, along with delicious food, the only reason I'm giving this place a 4 out of 5 stars. As for the establishment owners and their "lack there of" to hire a bus or hostess, they get a big 0. Proper staffing is essential to running a well oiled machine.
