How hard is it to mess up a hot dog? Well apparently at…read moreBill's Hot Dog Stand, it's fairly easy. Me and my dad were stopping in Washington, NC, to grab a hot dog before arriving at Goose Creek State Park to camp over the weekend. We heard about Bill's Hot Dog Stand on North Carolina Weekend PBS, but that was 100% outdated. This place just down right sucks. Walking in there was a line in the small establishment shaped like a horseshoe, so we believed it to be good. People were also ordering about 20 of them. How? I don't know. The 3 women behind the counter were rude. 1 was going painfully slow at taking hot dogs out of the boiler, the 2nd had an attitude about putting some chili (slop), mustard, and onions on a hot dog, and the 3rd practically was yelling in everyone's face at the register. When it was finally our turn, my dad ordered a hot dog with chili and mustard, and the individual said "So no onions?" Lady, they're the same thing. The chili was discolored (brown) and was practically paste. I don't know how you call that chili. When we ate our hot dogs, they were just downright gross. They both had a weird taste, and the chili was overly spicy and just gross tasting. The tea was so overpoweringly sweet (and I like SWEET tea), and customer service was just horrible. Do not come here. Just don't do it. Want a GOOD hot dog? Head to Hap's in Salisbury.

The hubs and I stopped by for an early lunch, and we tried: their BBQ (slow-roasted prime pork shoulder in pulled pork form, served in a potato bun with coleslaw; wasn't a fan of this, as while the buns were generously packed with the pork, the pulled pork was just too wet and vinegary for my taste), the Junkyard Dog (sloppy joe, cheese sauce, shredded cheddar, and red onion; this was just okay), the Kim Dog Un (kimchi and wasabi peas; really enjoyed this, as the kimchi was super well-fermented to perfection, and the wasabi peas added a very nice touch to it! Kind of reminded me of a kimchi jjigae/budae jjigae in a bun!), a side of Mom's Mac 'n Cheese (kind of bland), and the red bliss potato salad (too dill-centric). They use Oscar Mayer all-beef dogs. The place was super cute, with various dog statues, cookie jars, figurines, and cute posters hanging on the walls. Staff were friendly and welcoming! I'd love to try out their other dogs and maybe their chicken sausage options the next time around! +Kim Dog Un :D +great kimchi! +friendly staff! +cute decor! +small private lot for your car

I've had the hotdogs and burgers here too and they are worth the trip! The prices are phenomenal! This is no greasy spoon, as the pops sign says... this is good eatin' and great service!! We got a special treat because Patsy, who was the previous owners sister, now owned by her niece, came by every table and said hello. She was cute as a button! Worked here for 50 years and she's still as spry and friendly as ever! She told us about Fried Chicken Thursdays, very popular! And she makes the pies! We got a lemon meringue to go!! It then it looked so good, we ate it there!! Come on get you some!

Service here is quick and friendly with the Southern hospitality you'd expect. I ordered two hot dogs, one with chili, slaw, and mustard and one with chili and cheese. CDI is one of those funky joints that puts the cheese of the chili cheese dog under chili. Does it matter? Probably not...but also...maybe? On the way out, the cakes on the counter were calling my name. I got a slice of yellow cake with chocolate icing and ate it that night in my hotel. Delightful! I'd definitely return to Community Drive-In and sample some of their other menu items.
