I traveled with friends to Blacksburg to watch our alma mater, Virginia Tech, play Marshall. We took the 460 route and planned to grab lunch in Lynchburg. My friend, Neal, spoke of a new-ish BBQ spot out there, so we (the three of us) agreed to check out County Smoak. For the CoVa residents, County Smoak reminds me a little of Ghent's Redwood Smoke Shack - a small venue that churns out plenty of delicious food. CS is located next door to a putt-putt golf place which, according to my traveling companion who's frequented Lynchburg, has been open for at least 30 years. CS's establishment is clean, organized and has plenty of real estate for outdoor seating. Inside, there are only 1-2 tables and a small bar for individual seating. Also inside is a soda fountain, their register, 2 individual bathrooms and the kitchen. An adjacent building houses their smokers - you can see staff going back and forth from the kitchen to the smokers (and vice versa). Next to the register is a chalkboard that displays all of their menu items. They also have physical menus and sport a small chalkboard on the floor with dessert specials. Since there is no table service, the ordering process is simple - get in line, order, pay and then wait for your name to be called. When we arrived, we wanted to stay out of the car, so we ate lunch there. CS has tables and chairs set up outside for al fresco dining - that's where we sat and enjoyed our food. And when I say we enjoyed their food, I mean it. I had a platter for 1 in which you could pick 1/4 lb (total) of 2 meats (pulled pork, prime brisket, smoaked chicken, smoaked turkey, pork spare ribs, Scooby snacks [pork rib tips], smoaked sausage). I chose smoked turkey and brisket, and the platter came with pickles, a choice of a side (mac & cheese, pit smoaked baked beans, collard greens, red bliss potato salad, bacon & blue cheese slaw, mustard slaw, fire & ice pickles), a choice of one of their homemade sauces and a piece of cornbread. Their brisket, hands down, is the best I've had in a while. It blows away both Bar-Q & Redwood, imo, and CS's turkey is outstanding. I was impressed with the potato salad (excellent coverage on the potatoes without being runny) and I was extremely impressed with their fire & ice pickles. Finally, their cornbread is so smooth, buttery and tasty. The best part - it was moist and far from dry. The item that stole the show was their mustard BBQ sauce named Liquid Gold. It's both sweet and tangy, and worked perfectly with their meats. We were so impressed with County Smoak that we decided to visit them on our way back home from Blacksburg. This time around I ordered a pound of brisket to take home to mom and a chicken sandwich (Alabama pulled chicken, fire & ice pickles, Alabama white sauce [The Don] ) for the road. All of the food I tried was delicious to the point where I'd seriously consider another trip specifically to dine there again. Just in case, County Smoak sells their BBQ sauces in bottles, and they also sell their "County Smoak" rub. Finally, County Smoak caters - mmmmmmmmmm!!! County Smoak offers the best BBQ I've had in a long time. I can't wait to visit them again. Thank you, County Smoak! JV

First time at County Smoak after passing it many times before. So glad we came in to this tiny outfit with close seating for maybe 8. 1 table for 4 and a few chairs along the window. We chose to eat in. As we waited for our food, folks streamed in and out to place orders or pick up called in orders. The salad was hearty, with lettuce, bacon bits, cucumbers and cheese, and topped with my choice- the brisket. Hubby had the brisket sandwich and was also very pleased. The side of smoked based beans- among the best I've had. This place will see us again and I'll be glad to try a few more things.

The locals swear by this place!!! I must admit , It's good ... really good!!!! While in town , my family and I came here on a Friday afternoon to grab lunch. Literally, we arrived moments after they opened. We blinked and the place was packed!!! This isn't a big establishment. Once we ordered at the counter, we opted to just eat outside. They will text you when your order is ready. I really enjoyed my brisket sandwich! Definitely some of the best brisket I ever had. Most of us either had brisket or pulled pork. No regrets! There was a little mix up with one of our orders. The manager quickly resolved. I will say I wish the ordering process was different. Order pick up for call in orders get all muddled up with people placing current orders. It's oddly inconvenient. Overall, this was a good first visit. Although the inside is rather small. Staff is friendly enough. I will definitely be back to try more menu items!

Delicious - as Always!! This place has phenomenal bbq. The staff is very friendly and we love eating outdoors here, when the weather permits.

The BBQ here is the best I've had. Service is quick, friendly, organized the stuff well everything I want in a restaurant. They know what they're doing they have it down to a science. I have to appreciate the Liberty football

Look no further for barbecue and all the fixings than County Smoak on Timberlake! I've passed this place almost everyday for years until finally stopping in (and wish I did sooner). My husband was a huge fan of the brisket, but as a vegetarian I of course opted for some of the sides. The potato salad was delicious and flavorful. The macaroni and cheese was so creamy. I especially liked the outdoor seating that is perfect for a nice day in spring/summer. I recommend stopping by if you haven't already!

Had to try this place and see what the hype is all about as my coworkers recommended it. Since my mother is currently visiting from Hawaii, I wanted her to experience Southern food. We both liked it, but I just don't think this is all worth $65. The brisket was tender, ribs was not fall off the bone, and the grilled chicken eh....we didn't like it so much. Unsure what kind of flavors they were going for with the poultry. Also, unsure about the sweet pickles. I found that weird, just weird. I really liked the corn bread and Mac n cheese though. But anyways, it was alright. Definitely not affordable lol.

Very good service, staff was extremely helpful/knowledgeable. This was my first time at County Smoak and they were able to make recommendations and answered all my questions We were picking up food for a late lunch. Food was delicious ...I got the baked potato and added pulled pork, I didn't even need supper as the portion was humongous. Everyone else said their meals were delicious too. We will be back when we are in Lynchburg

2 meat platter - Beef sausage link with good smoke flavor and pulled pork so good, sauce is truly optional.

Summary, it's about a 80 miles from my house and I will definitely be doing it again and again. I love BBQ, so I have had BBQ around the world...not all good but all claim to be. This is different, it is so incredible, it takes you back to the days of food quality meant something! Potato Soup - occasionally available but often sold out....for a reason, so incredible, it takes you back to the days of food quality meant something! Buy it, even if you are not hungry and don't like potatoes soup...this will change your mind! Pulled pork with solid smoked flavoring. Save some money, no sauce needs to be ordered, it is amazing enough that the flavor needs no make-up to be beautiful! This pork is simply remarkable. The salad has the pulled chicken, the salad is solid and enough to easily feed two people and three if it is a side salad. The Clucky Mac Bowl is large enough to satisfy the hunger of a mid-20s man with a big appetite. The noodles are done right, not a pasta mush but good noodles with texture and flavor. The meat was generous and added just enough to make this a solid meal. The inside is small with one table and 6 seats facing the wall with a wall mounted table. There is a lot of seating outside as well. The service was quick and within 10 minutes food was ready and served. BBQ tip, if you can't see a smoker, smell a smoker, then the place probably has some high end microwaves and you need to leave quickly. This place has some massive incredible smokers! Overall, 80 miles away or not, we will be back! So, Come, Eat, Be beyond satisfied!

Great to see representation for Korean food where we would least likely expect it…read more The banchan was tasty but weirdly limited (we were only given four for a whole family), teeny tiny portions (each normal-sized banchan dish was not even 1/3 full...come ON!) , and they never got refilled either. The Caucasian waitress did not seem at all familiar with the menu, so that was weird. The food was very good for the most part but could be better. So many options--nice offering! Strangely, the bibimbaps (we had 3 different ones) do NOT include fried egg on top. You have to ask for it and pay extra for it, which is ridiculous. If the cost of eggs hurts you that much, just raise the price. The menu even LISTS egg as an ingredient which makes it more confusing, but that apparently refers to the scrambled eggs that is chopped up inside the dish. Those scrambled eggs were kinda dry. Also, the veggie bibimbop was missing any flavor..had to add some banchan in there to get it up to par. Chicken katsu over rice was decent. Side of cream soup was ok. Waitress had absolutely no idea what ingredients were in it when we asked, AND she did not even offer to find out for us. We asked her to ask in the back and she never did come back with an answer. The beef kimbap/gimbap was really dry somehow. Like maybe the scrambled egg in it or the meat or both were overcooked and the rice not so fresh. Also it was missing flavor...it did not come with sauce or the pictured fish cakes. No sauces were available on the table. I had to steal some sauce from the banchan bowls to help choke it down. Also they're made just HUGE so it takes two bites to eat each and then of course that makes them fall apart. Really pretty to look at though. The miso soup sides were really good--usually at our local place they give us mild egg drop type soup so it was a welcome change. Would we eat lunch here again? Probably, since we just absolutely love Korean food...but we will learn from this experience and order differently next time. The mochi donuts on the way out..the cinnamon sugar ones were hard and dry and much smaller than the other flavors...so that was super weird. We ordered via the kiosk but when we got home we realized the humans got our order wrong so that sucked (the order is printed right there ON THE BOX, come on people) soooo...check the box before you leave!! The donuts could be way better...we usually get them in Newport News and those are bigger, fluffier, and chewier, but this was a decent attempt anyway. Oh, and the bible verse on the insides of the boxes was off putting. Because of that, we will not buy from the donuts/boba shop again. I feel like this place could do better but they're just not striving to, because they have no competition in the area.
