We put our name down and waited for 30 minutes while multiple tables were open and ready. Once we were seated we had to ask if we had a server as no one approached up for water or drinks for 15 minutes. Our drink order was taken, half came out and half didn't for another 30 minutes. Our appetizer was apparently "out" after we put the order in. Half of our party ended up leaving early as they had prior commitments and we had been in the restaurant for almost two hours. Went into the Friendly Toast for Brunch and had an overall good time. The atmosphere inside was fun and it seems like a good college town restaurant. However, the one thing is it was busy and we waited about 45 minutes for our food to come out. Once the food did come out, there was a pancake that was not cooked all the way through, but they were really good about remaking a new one quickly. I decided to try the monte madame, which was interesting. It was so close to being amazing, because I loved the sauce it came in, and the chile sauce over the egg. The Gruyère cheese with ham was also great. However that cheese and ham was on a croissant that had been cooked like French onion toast. A plus for ambiance. Such a fun atmosphere. All the art is very whimsical. As is the menu, I liked the section called "friends with benedicts." Hilarious and tasty! The service was super friendly. Even when I was leaving several workers said bye and thank you. Food was serviced reasonably quickly. Everything was very tasty and they get extra points for being vegetarian friendly. My husband ordered his special and told them to just leave off the bacon (which is what we do at other brunch restaurants.) Who doesn't like a good brunch on a vacation!? Absolutely love this place. The host was very nice, informed the waiting time (20min) and let us waited inside by the bar. We picked the Friendly Toast for Sunday brunch during our trip. Upon arriving at the restaurant around 9:30 am, it was super full, including the bar. We joined their waiting list that had live update for the wait time. While we waited, I looked at the restaurant. It was so colorful, with its red/green colors, gaming themed arts, paintings, decors and sparkling cushion seats. We got our table after about 25 minutes of waiting. I ordered the bulgogi steak and cheese sandwich, alongside side of two eggs. It was a delicious sandwich filled with complimentary ingredients like slaw and aioli. The eggs were cooked perfectly as requested. We also got the cookie monster pancakes. It came with a bottle of maple syrup, that was so cool. The pancakes were fluffy and sweet. The mango lemonade was a good drink as well. Overall the brunch was amazing. The staff were friendly. They forgot to bring couple of our drinks until we reminded the waitress. I used to think this restaurant was the best brunch spot in Burlington with no doubt in my mind, however I'm extremely disappointed with my experience today. My first observation was that the menu has gotten significantly worse: 1. Much smaller 2. At least 20% more expensive 3. Their staples were no longer - they have 2-3 types of 'sweet stuff:' pancakes, and French toast. The pancakes were either standard or standard with *chocolate whipped cream!* 4. The non-alcoholic drink menu is firstly difficult to find, but that's attributed to the fact that there ARE none! Like 3 or 4 options. Most of which revolved around lemonade (which, granted was very good). Secondly, not to the fault of the restaurant per se, but our server was impatient, slightly rude, unhelpful, insincere, and quite frankly neglectful. We were barely checked on, my partner didn't get her coffee until after we all had our water and other drinks... And we had to ask her. The coffee was already brewed and right next to our table. I'm going to start getting a little nitpicky as I was once a server. She didn't give us 5 seconds to decide on something before she said "I'll just give you a minute." We didn't need a minute, we needed 2 seconds of patience and respect. She didn't ask us if we wanted a box, or if we wanted a to-go cup for our still-full drinks. But was able to place the check on the table and say "whenever you're ready!" After she sat there while we put in our tip, she then gave me a snarky look after she glanced at what we provided her. Onto more important things... 1. The portions were SMALL. I mean noticeably smaller than it used to be. I got the megs American, and it used to fit solidly in my hand; I wasn't able to finish 1/2 of it. After having the laughable 'plate' of chicken for the appetizer and some tots (which we actually solid!) I still was able to finish the burrito and the also laughable amount of potatoes. The French toast was actually pretty good, but the fresh berries came with a whole 1 1/2 strawberries and maybe 6 blueberries. Overall, I can confidently say this was the worst experience I've had at this restaurant, and the changes they did to the menu, prices, and portions will be the downfall of this once exceptional establishment. read more

The decor inside is super fun and I could spend all day looking at all the items around the restaurant, and I love the bright colors. I started with the Watermelon Faux-Jito Mocktail to drink. This was so flavorful. I would never have thought to put Doritos on top but they were a perfect crunch. In addition to the decor, the service was great. Our server was quick, knowledgeable and friendly. I love how all the servers kinda had that 'just woke up' look and the whole style of just "I am being me!". I love that! The service was excellent, from the host to our waitress. The place is cute, right off of Church st with a nice little outdoor patio. The food was great. For the past two years, The Friendly Toast has been my go-to brunch spot after the Burlington Marathon. I'm vegan, and after a race, I always want pancakes, so this had to be the spot. Last year, I remember the pancakes being super fluffy and satisfying. They may have changed the menu in the past year, because now they're vegan and gluten-free, and you can tell. A bit dry, not as fluffy, and smaller than I recall. Definitely need syrup, but I do love that you get a little bottle of real maple syrup with them. Some vegan butter could help them but this place doesn't stock that. I also ordered a side of tofu scramble (again, just ran a marathon) and it was very dry. However, I asked for hot sauce and tried their housemade maple turmeric hot sauce and that made the dish. Not too sweet, not too spicy - they should sell this by the bottle! Five stars for atmosphere. If you want a fun diner experience that's cute and not dingy, Friendly Toast delivers. Drinks-wise, I just ordered black coffee. It's very dark and very strong. Having frequented other Friendly Toast locations when I lived in Boston, I was psyched to discover they had opened in Burlington on our recent trip. We stopped by for breakfast before hitting the road to drive home and had a delicious and efficient breakfast with attentive staff. The highlight for us was definitely the Churro French Toast Sticks --- just superb with crispy exterior, soft inside, tons of cinnamon flavor, and delicious sauces (cheesecake drizzle, strawberry jam) that we absolutely devoured. I ordered the Medley Crue, a veggie packed hash with an avocado cilantro sauce that kicked everything up a notch and felt like a healthier balance to our indulgent french toast sticks. Stopped in here at noon before heading to the airport. We had about 45 minutes and the waitress assured us it would be quick. She eventually came out and apologized for the wait, and asked if we would be fine with hash instead of home fries. We said sure, whatever is quickest. She graciously boxed it up, but after we left we discovered no silverware or napkins in the to go bag. No discount for how long it took. The real maple syrup was served in mini bottles custom made for Friendly Toast - the waitress even offered for me to take my 2nd mini bottle home because I had only used 1 bottle. The toast was lightly toasted but not very sourdough-y tasting and 2 small half slices - for $3 side, I would have expected 4 small half slices - maybe it's from a special bakery but it wasn't listed like that. The coffee was good but standard and they did not offer a refill. The home fries were not great - they were neither crispy nor flavorful. We didn't finish the churros - we should have read the menu closer as it is paired with "spicy strawberry habanero jam" - creative? yes, tasty? no. We thought we were having a food allergy because we couldn't figure out the tingling in our mouths. Our fault - we didn't read the menu carefully and this just wasn't for us. The fruit salad was mostly melon hidden underneath a top layer of a strawberry cut in half and a handful of blueberries - not worth $6 side. Prices are reasonable except the sides as noted.
