Have you ever wondered why there was such a high turnover rate for servers here? It's because of the management. The management treats staff with an unbelievable level of disrespect. Servers are made to feel incompetent over the smallest mistakes, like one error suddenly ruins everything, yet the kitchen is apparently allowed to make mistakes without the same treatment or accountability. The double standard was impossible not to notice. What really shocked me was seeing staff get yelled at in front of customers. At one point I saw a server visibly holding back tears after being spoken to so harshly. It created such an uncomfortable atmosphere while trying to eat breakfast. The kitchen staff was also loudly cursing throughout the restaurant. It made the environment feel chaotic and hostile, especially considering there were kids around. Honestly, I didn't want to hear that either while trying to enjoy a meal. Manager Kim also came across as snarky and arrogant toward staff, which completely put me off. The attitude from management overall seemed toxic and dismissive. The food itself was fine -- nothing special, but reasonably priced. Unfortunately, decent prices don't make up for the environment. I also witnessed staff openly talking badly about people behind their backs, which only added to the negativity. Overall, it was a horrible experience, and I can't justify supporting a business that appears to treat its employees so poorly. No restaurant is worth that kind of environment. read more

After having a daughter at UVM, we finally made it to Henry's diner. Loved reading about the history of it and how the original building was brought from Bayonne NJ to Burlington. I am originally from NJ, the land of diners, so I couldn't wait to try this one. The interior had a vibe of diners gone by and I loved it. Our server was sweet and attentive. Stopped here on our drive home from Montreal and it was perfect. We immediately got seated and was warmly greeted by our waiter. The waitress we had was not nice at all and had a nasty attitude. We would ask her a question and she would give us a dirty look as to why we are asking her the questions we did. Inside is very cute looking, they have nice booths and it's very yellow looking. The food could have been a little bit better. The home fires barley had any flavor to it , the sausage patties were okay I wished I would had received the links but I think they only came as pork. The French toast and the biscuit was on point. YES. AMAZING STOP! Really cool 100 yr old diner and the food was fantastic! It's a tiny space so we sat at the barstools and watched them cook our breakfast. I don't get the hype. ‍ Coffee The menu notes it was Vermont coffee, being a coffee connoisseur I indulged. I immediately regretted that decision. The coffee was so bitter it wasn't drinkable, clearly Vermont coffee makers pick the cherries too soon or maybe that's the standard? The coffee was also overly strong, like jet fuel. Again, maybe that's the standard. Clearly it was not my jam, I tasted it and couldn't even drink it. Irish Benedict I Cynivised and switched the English Muffin to their homemade biscuits. Good hollandaise sauce with a lemon presence that was balanced. Perfectly poached eggs. I liked that the hash was real and not the canned stuff. The potatoes in the hash were a bit underdone. The biscuit was a little stale in the middle. The side of potatoes that it comes with were a great golden brown, and still under cooked, with several hard pieces of potato. Chocolate Chip Pancake Golden brown pancake. I Cynivised by adding chocolate chips. The chips were perfectly melted. I loved that in Vermont you get maple syrup! I'd expect nothing less. The pancake itself was very chewy, indicating that the batter was over mixed. The food at this diner was edible, at best. Nevertheless you go for historical reasons, one of the first diners in the State with only 4 owners in over 100 years and still operating today is very impressive. read more

I stopped by for brunch on a random Tuesday. The diner is in a great location right off Church Street. Upon arriving, I was quickly seated and the place wasn't too busy. Perfect diner in Burlington! We came in on a Friday morning and the service was excellent. It's a small old train car and they really utilize the space perfectly. When someone says old fashioned diner Henry's is what I picture in my mind. Sadly they aren't open Monday through Thursday so I didn't get a chance to get here until Friday when I was in town. When I walked in the first thing that I noticed was how low the ceiling was. I am 6'2" and I had the hunch over to get to the bar seats. Once I was seated I got informed by the waitress that they don't allow outside beverages so I had to dump my Coffee out that I got on my walk over. Would have been nice to have a sign posted but won't hold that against them. The waitress was friendly and knew all of the regulars by name. Felt like was in a tv show. I just wanted a short stack of two pancakes with a side on bacon. It was ready super fast. Pancakes were nice and fluffy and the bacon was crispy. Price was grassy. I had the little Henry - two eggs any style, choice of ham sausage bacon (Vermont ham delish) potatoes and choice of french toast or pancake (my choice). So yummy!! Arrived for a 25-30 minute wait, which was right on the money. The waitstaff was hustling and keeping up with the flow. Sitting at the bar, you could see the 3 cooks doing the plate ballet. Deputy Yelper decided that we just had to stop in this Burlington Institution for lunch before it closed at 2:00pm. (Deputy Yelper seemed to associate this diner with various states of intoxication back in the day when it was apparently open well into the night - those days are over.) Mind you, it's not the most vegetarian-friendly place, which is kind of a surprise for downtown Burlington. Nevertheless, one of their lunch specials was the veggie sandwich, although it came with a decidedly non-vegetarian clam chowder. The sandwich, kind of a deluxe grilled cheese (the grilled cheese sandwich is the only item I found on the regular menu for vegetarians). Deputy Yelpers at the table praised their various animal-based burgers. But what made this visit memorable was our excellent server, Jess, who, when she noticed that I was taking some photos with my phone, volunteered to take one of our group. She is a more than competent photographer. Then, she confessed that we were sitting in the same booth where she had her first date some years previously. "How did it go?" I felt compelled to ask. Henrys Diner is one of downtown Burlington's most affordable and delicious breakfast places. The building is small and quaint, and stands out from the rest of the modernized downtown area. It looks like what I picture when I think "old-fashioned diner." Don't be surprised if you have a longer wait time during peak business hours, as the restaurant is small and popular. Jen is one of my favorite waitresses of all time -- she is hilarious, is always kind, and will keep it real with you if you have a question. A few months ago, the restaurant was bought from the previous owner. The changes have been great thus far -- the servers now have handheld devices so the front area doesn't get crowded from people lined up to pay (which was always an issue in the past). Additionally, they will soon be moving to having hours on all seven days of the week! We came after seeing such great reviews, and they were one of the few places open earlier for breakfast. We got here around 7:20 am on a Sunday morning, and there was already a line out the door. They were short staffed, so we didn't mind waiting. (PS, if you know they're short staff and trying their best, don't be like that miserable family in front of us that spent the whole time in line complaining and being pretty mean. It's not going to get you anywhere faster. And you look like jerks) We got seated before 8 am, which was a win for us. There were only 2 waitresses, and one was doing most of the bar area and the back room which was filled with a team of rugby players. They were absolutely killing it. Super efficent and nonstop. I got the pumpkin pancakes with homefries, wheat toast, ham, and over easy eggs. I also got a yogurt with granola and apple cider. My husband got a big breakfast with coffee. He said the coffee was actually pretty good and was surprising for a diner like establishment. The food didn't take too long. And wow, it was very worth the wait in line. We were both blown away with how delicious everything was. My ham was so juicy and flavorful. The potatoes? Dear god, I could wat that for the rest of my life and be fine with it. It was very well seasoned. The pumpkin pancakes were the perfect diner pancakes I love. The yogurt was a whole fat type which was very filling but delicious. Apple cider of course was standout. There was enough, though I wouldn't call it plentiful and there are no large chunks of meat--all fine and crispy. (Again, enjoyed the crispy.) And I like that there are NO green peppers (or any other veggies) taking up space here. It is just the meat. Down side: it was a bit oily. That might be the skillet preparation specifically. Stopped by here looking for brunch. Note we waited about 15 minutes but that's because Burlington was definitely more bustling due to the eclipse. Our waitress and host were incredibly kind. I took our waitress's recommendation and went with the Irish Eggs Benedict while my boyfriend got the chicken fried steak. The food is super delicious -- if you're craving diner food this place will absolutely hit the spot. The price is also fantastic for the quality of the food and the size of it. The ambiance inside too is super cute and bright and it's just a wonderful spot. Highly recommend and will definitely be stopping by again next time I'm in Burlington. read more
