    Donuts
    Sierra S.

The name pulled me into this café/diner. I walked in and was met with the donut case in the picture, which made me smile. They sell an assortment of items: homemade soups, spices, etc. I have been on a hunt for "the perfect" cake donut for the last few weeks, and I cannot explain it. I opted for the maple donut, and it was okay. Not too much sugar icing (read: decent crackle), flavor, and chewy. It looked like a cake donut, but alas, this was no cake donut. The staff is very friendly, and there is plenty of seating inside and outside. Parking is also not an issue.

    a pile of fried chicken

Takeout from this restaurant was a horrendously expensive mistake. This was the most money I have ever paid for fried chicken in my life -- and I've lived in very expensive cities and frequented plenty of pricey spots. $68 for one whole fried chicken is exorbitant. But I wouldn't have minded paying that much money -- I mean, after all, I knew what I was getting into, and I paid in advance (sadly) -- if it had been at least decent fried chicken. Our meal wasn't ready when we came at the appropriate pick-up time, and that apparently was because they were leaving it in the fryer for an extra 20 minutes or so in order to burn it through and through and dry out the meat entirely. I assumed, of course, that we had a decent take-out meal, and didn't check on the state of it before we drove an hour home. Imagine my surprise when I opened the bag to these chicken cinders. As per the accompanying pictures, be forewarned before you pay SIXTY EIGHT dollars for a burnt, dry fried chicken. They should never have put that in a bucket to serve to paying customers. For SHAME, Misery Loves Company. You certainly lived up to your name by providing us with quite an inordinately miserable meal tonight.

When I saw $26 for two pieces of fried chicken with sides, I rolled my eyes. Is Vermont this expensive? That is until multiple people said "this is the best damn chicken in the country". Let me tell you, this is the best fried chicken I have ever had in the entire country. I don't know how they get the chicken this crispy but it is worth every penny. The chicken goes excellent with the biscuit that's provided. The baked beans are also a big hit. I can't believe I'm saying this but I would come here again and pay for a whole bird.

I have only been here for Happy Hour, so I cannot speak to their Dinner and Brunch menus. I enjoyed the Oysters, Fried Oyster Ssam, and Chicken Wings in the Red Dragon Sauce. Service: Amazing. No other words necessary. Oysters: Not the greatest. I live by the water, so these oysters didn't quite compare. I did enjoy the $1/oyster price tag. Fried Oyster Ssam: The other reviews aren't lying - it is a must try! Chicken Wings: Absolutely delicious. They came with a Chive-like Aioli. All 3 apps came to $27. Can't beat that.

    The Croque Madame

The clever name is what initially drew me to this restaurant for brunch. This is a cute, quaint little place with accents like sparse, random decoration and mismatching plates -- hipstery vibe for sure, but it does feel homey and welcoming, like you're at a friend's house who hasn't quite got their life together yet. I'll just get right to it: four stars because the food is good but not amazing, and just a tad pricey, in my opinion. We got the cheddar beignets for the table, which were very interesting (in a good way) and then I ordered the Croque Madame as my meal. Like I said, it was good but not great; there wasn't anything super special about it. But still satisfying! Everyone has their own opinion on what's considered a little pricey, so I'll break it down so you can form your own thoughts on the matter: 3 people + 2 coffees + 1 app + 3 meals + tax & tip = $68.

    Roast beef sandwich
    Noah G.

Ive heard nothing but good things since i got to Burlington and have wanted to get here. When i saw they had a roast beef sandwich special i knew i needed to try it. Naturally i biked from uvm in a snowstorm to get it. Was it worth it? Well the sandwich was fantastic, it had a great tangy flavor from the horseradish cream and arugula salad, not to mention it came on a excellent crusty baguette. That being said, it felt a little lacking in the meat department. The flavor/texture of the roast beef was lost in the bread and arugula. A 21$ sandwich should NEVER have that problem... This sandwich is close to greatness- just not all the way there.

I love this place! Stopped by on a whim. Arrived at the airport between lunch and dinner. So we came here and they were doing happy hour. Dinner service didn't start til later but we didn't care because their happy hour menu is awesome! We started with 30+ oysters. They're only a dollar a piece! They're from Nova Scotia so they're a little on the small side and kinda briny. They were served with a mignonette and hot sauce. We also ordered the pate. It came w delicious toast points and pickled onions. So good. The tartare was also very tasty. I've never had it served with potato chips, but I used the chips for the pate too! Haha For beverages I was a bit disappointed because he happy hour menu had a few on there, but the price was no different than on the regular menu. So what's the point of having featured cocktails when the whole cocktail menu is available??? Service was pretty good. I think they forgot about our fried chicken sandwich because we had to ask for it, and then it came out right away. The server was quick to keep our waters full and to walk by and see if we needed more cocktails. The food as a whole was amazing. I would totally go back here and try some more. The place is cute, with cookbook decor and an open kitchen. Parking is on the street, no lot. So you gotta pay the hourly rate or find something in the neighborhood and walk. Check this place out. The name is funny but you won't be sorry!

This place is incredible. The chicken parm sandwich pictured was so fresh tasting. The restaurant appears to pride itself in sourcing its ingredients from local, organic sources, and it shows.

Imagine perfectly fried tender chicken, covered in buffalo sauce, and blue cheese on a soft bun... you knows it's going to be messy, but you also know it's totally worth it... yep! Order the Rough Francis! As you can tell from my description, it was okay. LOL The Chicken & Waffles looked amazing, and I can confirm the waffle was delicious. It was hard to steal a bite of the whole thing. Since he finished his dish before me, guessing it was really good. Also, they make a great Virgin Mary, the flavors are spot on.

Easily one of our favorite places anywhere in Vermont. So many choices, and they're ALL great. Well worth a trip or three!

A no laptop policy keeps things flowing and encourages folks to talk vs work. Breakfast menu is available all day while lunch starts at 11 and goes until close at 3p. We tried a few things: * croissant - super flaky and perfectly made. * breakfast sandwich - with sausage. Buttery and crispy edges toast with fried egg and melted cheese with sausage. One of my favorite breakfast sandwiches ever. * banner eighteen - a play on cheesesteak with broccoli mushrooms and shaved steak in a sesame hogie. This one had slight spice and a slight taste reminiscent of a combination pizza. It's a big sandwich and quite tasty. * oatmeal raisin cookie - not too sweet which I loved. Chewy. * fresh baquette. Bread . . . . . * maple lemonade - slightly sweet with a good bit of tartness. It was good! I'd definitely comeback here if I'm craving some sandwiches

We tried the eat the east breakfast sandwich ($11) and the vermonter sandwich ($16). I especially liked the vermonter sandwich and the bread it came on. The cafe also sells various bread items and baked goods. One thing to note is that since the cafe is counter-serve, seating is also first come first serve. We were able to snag a seat right as someone left, but for that reason I would recommend coming at a less peak time if able. August First is deservedly a busy spot in Burlington and I would be there often if I were a local.
