The fudge is pre- sliced and you HAVE to buy an entire slice. And then it's weighed. You can't choose which slice either. So it's about a pound of fudge or nothing. How bizarre! The fudge is decent. If you want to eat some fudge right there, there are some weak plastic knives to cut the fudge with. This did not work. So we asked for it to be cut by the server. She went and got a large slicing knife. She would not let us do it. She had to do it. And then she couldn't follow instructions. "Cut this way and that, no over here..." well at least we had a laugh. My friend then went around the store and started giving pieces of fudge out!!! We had a blast!!! Overall- this is a tourist trap. I love coming in here, even just for the delightful smells of chocolate and waffle cones. It's a combo fudgery and ice cream parlor. Their staff are always incredibly friendly, informative and happy to be there which is nice, especially on such a busy street in Charleston. I love their rocky road fudge, and their ice cream flavors offer a wide variety. I do wish their peanut butter had it more throughout rather than just a slab in the middle of the bar. So many other treats to enjoy like pralines and chocolate turtles. Their rice krispy treats are huge and covered in candy or crumbled oreos. There is also chocolate covered marshmellows. In case you are unfamiliar, Ashby's Sterling is basically food-service ice cream, like the kind that arrived at your university on a semi or the kind that you've paid too much for at a hotel Marriott, only to wonder why it's so aggressively mediocre. I'd just received terrible news from back home - The Parlour, Durham's most delicious hand-crafted ice cream, was releasing a tiny batch of my very favorite flavor while I was away: key lime pie. Oh, yay! The Fudgery has KLP too! All is not lost! EXCEPT IT IS TERRIBLE AND EVERYTHING IS AWFUL AND WHAT CIRCLE OF HELL AM I IN. If you're looking for sweet treats in Charleston, a there are so many offerings, this is probably a place you do not want to go. The service is very friendly and welcoming, but the product is simply not good. The wide variety of sweet snacks just looks so aesthetically appealing behind glass. But the lack of diligence behind the recipes for these poorly manufactured goods is evident. Having eaten fudge all over America, there is some serious 5-star fudge out there! It should be creamy yet firm, sweet but not overly sugary, flavorful but not overtly. Unfortunately, the fudge we bought at The Fudgery is too soft - even slimy - despite the aid of a refrigerator to salvage its texture. The recipe is far too sugary and overpowering. Even those attractive crisped rice squares covered with chocolate and M&M's are not the correct balance of flavor and are far too sweet. There are so many great fudge shops in the U.S., and even a few in Charleston. This is not one of them. read more

As I completed my shopping tour in Historic Down-Town Charleston and finished grabbing up some stone ground yellow grits, I heard this awesome song coming from the Fudgery about free Fudge. I peered in and started salivating at the many flavors of fudge and ice cream that filled the freezer and shelves. The aroma was intoxicating and I felt like a kid in a candy store. After sampling some rocky road, Lucy came from around the corner and helped usher the line into some sort of order and convinced me that their Mango smoothie was going to be a number One Hit. She prepared it quickly and also made me smile with a generous military discount! I had to agree she was right because the smoothie was fantastic and it is definitely a number One in my book. We had out of town company and went into Charlestown. That was the first good move. The second and even better move was going to the surgery. What an amazing place. I stopped in to get one or two pieces of fudge and we left with a shopping bag full. The Mississippi mud pie was outrageous, full of pecans and marshmallows. The maple, the chocolate and just about every other kind of fudge came home with us minus a few bites. Staff at the surgery could not have been sweeter. Ladies were very helpful in the suggestions they made to us. They offered us small pieces I think Think, tasting pieces. And discussed all the ingredients that were in each piece. That was a deal because of allergies. We were here for quite a while and we were not rushed out It's just an amazing fridge please and I will be enjoying the candy for a month, or more. read more

I feel really badly about leaving a bad review, but I have to be honest. For a shop that's called, "The Fudgery" their fudge is awful. My husband and I thought it would be fun to go to a few dessert places around Charleston and try the samples before deciding where to purchase our dessert. I tried several kinds of the fudge here and ALL of them were stale and crumbly. Not at all how fudge should be. They have nice employees, offer samples, and the place is really clean and cute so I gave it a couple of stars. Unfortunately, we did not purchase our dessert there that night. After spending three days vacationing in Charleston, SC, we decided to "treat" ourselves at a local sweet shop with ice cream cones and traditional candies. Everyone here was so friendly and helpful! They were more than willing to let us sample different ice creams and fudges, which were all DELICIOUS!! Our favorites were the caramel chocolate fudge and the jacked-up Tennessee toffee ice cream. But the coolest thing by far was watching Delaney make the fudge from scratch. She told funny jokes and made great conversation as we watched her for about 20 minutes. When she finished, she shared AMAZING samples with our family of 12!! Endless options of fudge and treats. I can't resist a good candied apple, so I bought two (they save well!).
