My husband, his parents, and I went to Kaminsky's at around 8:30ish on a weeknight for a sweet treat. It's a super small establishment with a few tables and some bar seating. Luckily, we were able to be seated immediately but it was very close quarters with surrounding tables. The menu is vast with different dessert options. If you want to know what cakes are available, you should check out the display stand right when you enter. Since we were there 2.5 hours before closing, there didn't seem to be a lot of cake options available, but my husband and I decided to share a slice of the s'mores cake with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream to make it à la mode. The s'mores cake was a chocolate cake with mini marshmallows, chocolate fudge, graham crackers, and more marshmallows. The cake was good and had everything I could ever want in it, but it was a little dry. I think this also had to do with it being the end of the night. The ice cream complemented the flavor well. It would have been better with a second scoop of ice cream though. Service was great! It took about 10 minutes from when we ordered to get our dessert. We gave Kaminsky's Dessert Cafe a second try, but unfortunately they couldn't redeem themselves. On both visits, service was lacking. We waited about 5 to 10 minutes to be acknowledged while two employees stood nearby. The two layer chocolate caramel pecan cake, which our waitress initially could not find, was dry and tasted stale. I would not order it again. The Tollhouse pie was a bit better, but the presentation and the whipped cream were the standouts, and the whipped cream wasn't even homemade! That's the best thing I could say about our experience. The food, pricing, service, and ambiance all fell below average. When you are located downtown with so many great dessert options around, you really need to step up your game. We will not be returning. read more

Every year I come here for my birthday cake. It's usually either hair or saffrons but the last couple years I came here last year I had the hummingbird everybody loved that cake, it was super thick. So the slices were gigantic, but it was worth it. All you needed was a cool glass of almond milk. This year, I went with the lemon cheesecake and the red velvet cake, and they did not let me down, they were so damn good. The crust on the lemon cheesecake I can eat all day by itself. After dinner, we decided to grab dessert in Charleston and upon searching found Kaminsky's Dessert Cafe. Parking was outside on the street, and when we walked in, it was busy with people ordering takeout and enjoying their desert. We checked out the place, and found a table, and soon our server, Grace, came over. We ordered the A La Mode and milkshake. We enjoyed the desert. First of all, kudos for having multiple dessert bars open late! We need these in every city! Bakeries always close early and then the only establishments open after 7pm are just bars and pubs. I've always felt the intense need for a proper dessert place. Kaminisky's has cakes, milkshakes and pies offered. My hope is that one day there would also be pastries, cupcakes and single serving Euro or Asian style cakes and desserts open somewhere. Okay, back to Kaminiskys--their cakes and pies were by the slice and I kid you not, they went for $8 - $12 a slice. Craziness. I would have happily paid $5 - $6 for a regular portion sized slice of cake. Instead, my bill was close to $13 for a gigantic slice of chocolate cake. The flavors were kind of similar and didn't have anything too exciting; I was looking for lemon cream or strawberries 'n cream, pear and graham cracker, etc. I opted for the Mountain of Chocolate. I don't particularly go for chocolate flavored desserts because I like fruit flavors better or more interesting ingredients like creme brulee, etc. but the description of ganache and buttercream sounded fab. For what I got, it definitely was chocolately but fortunately, not overly sweet. There was way too much cake ratio to cream. The server mentioned chocolate mousse but there was none. The buttercream was delicious but way too little! I wanted a thick layer of it but alas, could not even cover the massive amount of cake. I didn't taste any ganache either. My family and friends visited Kaminsky's for my birthday dessert! This location is in downtown Charleston so there is no stand alone parking. You can find street parking close by. As someone born and raised in Charleston, I was shocked by my experience at Kaminsky's. On a busy Saturday night, my boyfriend and I stopped in for dessert. An open table became available, and when we sat down, the hostess, the woman working that evening (Saturday), immediately told us we could not sit there. No explanation was provided, which left us confused and feeling unwelcome. Because of the way we were treated, we ordered a slice of key lime pie to go instead of staying. We even left a tip despite the poor service. Unfortunately, the key lime pie was awful and very disappointing. What bothered me most was the hostess's rude and dismissive attitude. If there was a reason we couldn't sit at the open table, it was never communicated to us. The interaction was so strange and unwelcoming that it left me wondering whether we were being treated differently for some reason. So many desserts to choose from, a great playlist, great coffee and drink choices...we got the ice cream sundae and added pecans. I mean, how could it go wrong?! A case full of cakes, pies, cobblers and cookies and brownies ready to go. Staff was friendly, plenty of seating, and located right across from the market...and the sundae was very good. Visited on February 21st. This place was amazing. I had never heard of a cafe that also caters to adult "alcohol added" desserts. Collectively we tasted the Mochatini, Bushwhacker, and the Up All Night. Our overall consensus was the "Up All Night" was the best! The Hummingbird cake (spice cake, pineapples, bananas, cream cheese icing and pecans) it was delicious and large enough for 2 1/2 servings. We also had the Toll House which was rich with chocolate chips and also plenty enouh to share. Overall, we were pleased with our visit and dessert choices. Coffee was good as well, smooth! They have a bar inside the cafe and an attached restaurant bar calls TBonz. Although the vibe looked chill, we didn't eat there so this review is only for Kaminsky's. I came right at open and as soon as I walked in, I was greeted with a bunch of scrumptious looking dessert in a display case. But I only came for one thing and that was a slice of tollhouse pie. ($8+ with tax). The friendly worker asked if I wanted it heated and I said oh yes! Had a craving for something sweet and boy did this place deliver. Located down in the middle of it all in Charleston. The decor is like a historic looking cafe which was clean and classic. The service was a tad slow but they were busy. We had two different cakes both of which were incredibly moist and full of flavor. (take out) When I opened the bag, there was chocolate all over the outside of the packaging--far more than the photo even shows. The overall presentation was messy and unexpected, especially for a place with such a strong reputation. More concerning was the quality of the dessert itself. The Bourbon Pecan Pie slice did not reflect the price point. The crust was extremely tough and tasted stale, and the overall slice seemed old rather than fresh. The name alone had me really looking forward to it, which made the experience even more disappointing. This one hit a little deeper for me--my wife has been at Medical University of South Carolina for the past 34 days, and I was hoping a high-end dessert would lift her spirits. I truly wanted this to be a special moment for her. I'm sharing this in hopes that quality and attention to detail improve, because the concept and reputation suggest it should be much better. read more

My go to was the Mountain of Chocolate cake for years but I'll never forget when my sister brought me a whole Fruit and Buttercream cake all the way to our hometown for my 23rd birthday. I've since had to change my eating to gluten-free so the Double Dare Chocolate Torte is my new love, lol. I decided to venture out of my box last Saturday and tried the Lemon Poppy Seed Cake and ... nope I'll stick to my new favorite. I also had the Nutty Irish (coffee, Irish cream liqueur, hazelnut liqueur) and it was divine! My daughter had her usual, the brownie sundae and of course it was delicious! Due to the expected weather, the restaurant was bare which was perfect for us! Our server was knowledgeable of the menu and had a great personality (although she recommended that lemon poppy seed cake lol). We are tourists in Charleston and came to this place because it was promised to be a fun ambiance and "the best milkshakes in town." When we arrived it was dead and we waited several minutes before someone showed us to a table. Everyone was busy with side chores, but we were happy selecting our milkshakes. After a long wait some came by to tell us that they were actually running counter service--which was news to us. When we went up to the counter to place our order we were informed that the ice cream machine was broken and they weren't making milkshakes. Look I get it. Things break. But when your ice cream machine breaks and you are known for milkshakes, at a bare minimum you need a manager on the floor.
