I wanted something sweet for my walk back to my hotel so I stopped in for a treat. There were 2 workers and I got a half @$$ greeting when I walked in even though I was the only person in there. When I finally decided on some chocolate covered pretzels the guy behind the counter acted as if I were interrupting his day, it was pretty off-putting. I got 3 pretzels and it came out to be $5, seemed pretty steep for not getting too much. Next time I think I'll take my business elsewhere, it seems to be a trend with this place based off other reviews. read more

If I want pecan pralines, this is where I come! They have a great variety of chocolates and other sweets as well. I also have to give a mention to their sugar-free chocolate, which I purchased for a gift for someone who is diabetic and it was quite good. They will always allow you to sample which I appreciate. I wouldn't buy the sugar-free until I sampled it myself. I've been in several times and Steven is always quite friendly and helpful. read more

This was the last stop on our Secrets Food tour and we got to sample some of the fresh made Pralines that had just been poured. They were astounding. I'm not even a big sweets person but the richness of these fresh Pralines, absolutely incredible. I bought some to take home and my wife bought some chocolate covered orange peels that she loved. I truly can't express how decadent these Pralines were. The staff was super friendly and and while the price per pound seemed a little high was super chill about telling you what desserts actually didn't weigh that much and were the most bang for your dollar. My friend recommended I come here to try their banana pudding ice cream. After receiving a sample of their delicious pralines, I made my way to the back of the store where the ice cream is located. When I told the associate that I wanted to try the banana pudding ice cream, she told me that she suggests the flavor to everyone who enters the store. Well, my friend was right, the ice cream was amazing. It was rich and creamy. It tasted like the best banana pudding I've ever had. Well, all I know is this place rocks so much I had a flashback to childhood walking in the door! You got your selection of gummy bears (or fish, or worms, or whatever else is gummy). I'm thinking you have already taken a mind-trip to Willy Wonka"s. The real treasure is behind the counter. Various flavors of truffles, pralines (chocolate praline it the new normal), and OMG the chocolate covered Rice Kristy treat was so decadent I had to rush home for some insulin! There are candy shops everywhere. Some try to lure you in with nostalgia, spelling their place a "shoppe". Others pump their exhaust fans into the street like the Pied Piper enticing his followers. Homemade treats of every kind made fresh daily. We stopped in as we were on a stroll through the shopping area and were so glad we did. The women at the counter were cheerful and welcoming, providing samples and descriptions of the various treats in the cases. We ended up getting much more then we planned but were so glad we did when we had the treats to savor for the next few days! The pralines are fantastic- both regular and coffee flavor and the caramel turtles are exquisite! I love pralines and we stopped here to get some. Unfortunately, these were not up to par. The pralines were hard as a rock! They offered a sample when we arrived and I didn't take one. They had an offer for buy a pound and get 1/2 pound free. It cost about $30 for a pound of pralines which are about 8 of them based on the photo. Perhaps requesting a fresh batch would be the best option. read more

Mom heard about this place and had to try the pralines, so we did. A small, simple candy shop with all the trimmings. The wall o' candy, homemade candies and chocolates, and even homemade ice cream. They had a sign for gelato but said they haven't had any for some time. I got the butter pecan ice cream and it was really good. Mom liked her pralines so much she bought a bunch of them. You can't go wrong here. I probably sampled as much as a praline pecan in the end only because I wasn't expecting chocolate and butterscotch flavors too. My bf was like nah I don't want a praline pecan, they are so sweet as he got himself a cupcake sized dark chocolate peanut butter cup. Which was so gooey and soft in the middle and delicious. I got the butterscotch praline and it was great, and a little different from your usual praline pecan. Went here late night after dinner and drinks. This shop was staffed by a crew of very friendly folks who made me feel very welcome from the moment I stepped in. At the front of the shop, two ladies were making fresh praline candies, sort of like peanut brittle, but with pecans. They invited everyone who can in to try some freshly made still-warm samples. I don't eat nuts, but my husband tells me It was delicious! I ended up buying a large package of candied pecan, which were actually made in a different facility in Savannah, Georgia. Although this shop had a wide variety of temping candies and fudges made in house, I was hoping to get pecans, so I ended up with that purchase. Although the bag was a little on the expensive side, hubby greatly enjoyed them and did not regret my choice of purchase. As an extra treat, the cashier threw in one of their freshly made praline candies for free, which was a nice touch. Best pralines north of Savannah!! Oh wait, that's because it's where Market Street Sweets came from! If you hear them calling out for fresh samples, do not shy away! One of the best sweets that exist - caramel, buttery mounds of whole pecans that literally melt in your mouth. My favorite is the original flavor but the chocolate and pumpkin season makes it home with me as well as gifts. Love this place! Will never get southern pralines from anywhere else! read more

Despite the gelato tasting good, we got a small cup of blackberry, a small cup of strawberry, and a small cup of butter pecan. Before tax, it should have been $14.85. After tax our total should have been $16.19. The employee saw I was holding a $20 bill and said it was $20 even. I questioned her and she said there was tax. I know tax is 9% but that shouldn't be $5. I asked for a receipt and she gave me a receipt that said $0.01 on it. She never opened the drawer when I handed her the money. It appears that she pocketed the money instead of ringing up the sale. So if you come here, make sure to pay with a credit card.... read more

Stopped in after a meal to get some sweets to close out our dinner. My partner in crime got the Key Lime gelato and I got the Pina Colada. Both were good which was not something I would ding them on. Good but not real good and Not Great. Cost for the items they had were a bit pricey. I guess I should have expected that considering where we were but I'm not going to give it a pass because of that. Should be renamed as River Street Sweets and Crack. They employ shillers to tempt you in and provide the first sample free to ensnare you. Bobby B and I were strolling along the lovely downtown Charleston, when from the side of the shop doorway we heard a pssssst. Surprised, we both turned and nearly upset a large sample tray from the hand of a waiting shop employee. She pushed the tray towards us, laden with massive broken shards of bear claws, peanut brickle, divinity and fresh prailines. It was late afternoon and we hadn't yet had lunch. We helped our selves greedily. The shop's front marble table, viewable through the store front glass, was systematically being filled with ladleful plops of piping hot prailine from a big vat. They cooled quickly and were scraped from the marble and deposited in large piles inside gift tins. We looked at each other, a questioning look in our eyes- hang lunch and gorge on prailines instead? Naw. We are NYers. We can resist the siren call of crack candy. We walked on down to the marina where we had planned to have lunch. Afterwards, we headed back to River Street Sweets. Today was my first time stopping in. My mom had a craving for ice cream. As soon as we walked in, we were offered a sample. I don't remember what it was but I know it was something with chocolate. The first thing I noticed was how long and narrow and store is. It's difficult to walk around when it's crowded. Luckily, a lot of people were leaving as we were coming in. We made our way to the back of the store where the ice cream station is. There were two people in the back and they both were preoccupied with activities. Neither one of them greeted us or asked if we wanted anything. They just kept doing what they were doing. I asked if we could get a scoop of ice cream. One of the ladies came over, scooped the ice cream, and said we can pay at the front. We made our way back to the front of the store. We checked out and left. I didn't try the ice cream but my mom said it tasted kind of coarse, like sand. Single scoops were $4 which is comparable to other ice cream places around Charleston. They offer a large selection of candy and chocolates. I noticed blocks of fudge, chocolate dipped apples, truffles, rock candy, fruit slices, and gummies, just to name a few. Very disappointed. 15 before closing, standing in line for ice cream and the employee randomly shuts down the service and said they are closed. The sign clearly says 9pm and yet, they closed early. No interest in actually serving ice cream or treats. Read the reviews, go someplace else, not worth the visit--and you might not even get served. read more

**Watch out for the Praline SCAM!** They have signs/coupons everywhere advertising "Buy 1# Get 1/2# FREE"... Great Deal... BUT ONLY IF YOU ACTUALLY GET THE FULL 1/2 lb... Our server weighed out the first 1# box (insisting that I pick out exactly which pralines I wanted) then he bagged it & added a small box to the scale without doing a tare weight or zeroing it. He put 2 pralines in the box, folded it closed, and put it in the bag! When I questioned why he didn't weigh the amount in the second box, he got very defensive & stated "that's what it is, 2 pralines". He looked embarrassed and appeared to get upset as I explained that the total weight on the register showed 1.085 # for BOTH boxes! He said "Yeah, that's what it is... 1# and 8oz " then told us our total of $31. He glanced at the other male employee who laughed & turned away... then left the room! The employee then removed both boxes from the scale and insisted it said 1.5#. He insisted even when I showed him where the receipt printed out 1.085# ... lol, busted red handed cheating customers on their big advertising promo. He was both furious & embarrassed... I was appalled & wonder how many other people are cheated this same way... Since BOTH employees appeared to know "that's just the way we do it" and not know what to do to correct it! Shame on them for running this scam... imagine how much they are profiting by doing this repeatedly each day! Buyer Beware! Interesting selection of traditional bulk candy along with some charleston specialities. They have free samples of their pralines. The ice cream selection looked like it had better days. Very little in some of the bins that it didn't look like there was enough for one scoop. Some of the candy in the bins looked old like it has been sitting there for a while. Sugar coated candy with less sugar on it because it may have been in humidity too long. It is a cute place to try on king street that I'm sure would be busy any other day if it weren't a Sunday morning. read more
