I have a mini split heat pump system that was leaking freon. I had someone else work on it, and weeks later it stopped working. So I decided to call the furnace room to have them come out and take a look at it. Maddy was the tech worker who came out to check it out. Right away he spotted what he thought was wrong with it. He showed me what he suspected, and I agreed that made total sense. Once he took the fittings apart, the problem was evident. I've been unfortunately disappointed in my experience with the furnace room. I wanted to support a local, long standing, family business, but there have just been wildly too many issues regarding my experience. To start, I reached out for bids from a few places, and the furnace room didn't say there would be a diagnosis fee like the others did when I called, so I went with them. They came, inspected my unit, and told me I needed to replace my furnace. When they went to leave, at the last minute they turned around and seemed to remember that I needed to pay a diagnostics fee which was never discussed or disclosed at the time of making the inquiry and appointment . There was a new guy training- so I wrote it off as part of the training experience of a growing company. I paid the fee and just decided to go with them for the install so I didn't lose the money. Then, they wrote the bid and forgot to discount the fee I already paid, not once, but twice, they sent me incorrect invoices which I had to carefully review and have adjusted. The owner then came out to do a walk through prior to the install. He asked if the techs went over the various types of furnaces and options for my heating needs- I wasn't aware of options as I was told they typically used the same furnaces. The owner then talked me into an upgraded system that was a better match (another new, incorrect bid to follow). I was told which thermostats were my options to purchase, only to get a call and text the day of install that the thermostat I got was not a match for the system I purchased and I had to frantically move appointments around and race to Home Depot to get the one they needed. The owner told me he would come by during install to oversee and ensure all was on track and going well, and he did not- the techs said he had other things going on. Additionally, I was told the install would take 6 hours and so I carefully planned to be there at the beginning to get them situated and the end to review the system and pay- but they finished hours early and I again had to rearrange my appointments and race home. It was unfortunate stress when I had booked back to back medical appointments to fill the day and had to race to Home Depot and home early due to a lack of communication. They said they finished early because they brought an additional tech, which would have been good to know so I could have planned for a 4 hour window. They were flexible and waited for me, but it was preventable stress. After the installation, they want to sell you on a maintenance package and they follow up with a post visit to see how everything is working. They late cancelled the first scheduled visit, and no showed the second time. Still no call or contact about this. To note- the folks I interacted with were all very kind, but the overall poor/lack of communication, last minute cancellations and no-shows, and incorrect invoices really left me with a mixed experience. It felt disappointing and disrespectful of my time, money and effort to have to work around their company's shortcomings. I have a working furnace, but it would have been a lot nicer without all the ongoing issues and poor communication. read more

BUYER BEWARE: I was screwed by this company. I give 5-star reviews but could not let this bad experience with The Furnace Room go. The Furnace Room was hired to fix my broken A/C, did not fix it, but decided to keep the full payment. While initially telling me the A/C could be repaired with 90% confidence, they ended up telling me I needed a full replacement after having already paid $1k. NEVER hire a company that charges by the hour with a minimum time allotment. Lesson learned. The Furnace Room pricing estimates just kept increasing. Ryan E. was the original estimator who came out and verbally quoted $300-400 for the fix, with $900 being the "worst case scenario". When I got the written proposal, $1000 was the given total cost. However, when the technicians came to fix the A/C, they charged me $1250, but said they would need to return because a part needed to be ordered. I knew what that meant: parts + labor meant more $$ for this company. (Mind you, there was no point having two technicians. I checked on the status of the A/C a few times and found one technician loafing around/chatting/sitting down... basically not participating in any repair or work.) So where does the $150 per hour come from? Having two technicians you need to pay, really? After talking and getting more HVAC estimates I've come to learn lead technicians make $45-50/hour, and junior technicians earn $30-35/hour - so at least $70/hour goes directly to the owner off-bat. The day before the last part was supposed to be installed, I got a phone call from the office manager, informing me they were canceling their own appointment. She said the owner took a look at the pictures and said "this is not going to work." She was unable to provide an answer as to why. The owner made no attempt to reach out to explain what went wrong. After a few tries to get answers I felt ghosted by The Furnace Room. They kept my money, did not repair the A/C unit, and I was told a replacement was recommended. The email states one part (" valve) is obsolete! Excuse me, um, wasn't that supposed to have been figured out by the estimator originally when he took down the model number, serial number, refrigerant charge when assessing whether a unit is fixable? This is 100% the company's fault because of their own oversight and lack of proper initial research. I have come to know that HVAC companies typically regard this as standard practice to credit the customer back and use the funds toward installing a new unit. Nope, not The Furnace Room. read more

This was Second time I've had them out for an intermittent problem with furnace-cold air blowing out instead of heat. (Of course it works fine when repairman is here!) I had another company come in between time, when It wasnt giving heat. This company said it would be a major part with a major cost to repair. When Greg from furnace room last came out, he said 'no' it was not that major part. it could be any number of smaller parts causing an intermittent problem. He gave me options, clues on what to look for and lots of tips. We decided to wait on replacing any parts yet. Service call fee was reasonable. I used to work for a tv repair shop and I know that intermittent problems are common and often difficult to pin down. I trust Greg and will use them again. As a side note, he had a young man with him that he was training. I was impressed with the way he respectfully treated the young man, talked him through the thought process and gave him some hands on with the billing. read more

Called because of a faint odor when running. Tech told us that our direct vent wall furnace was made by an unreliable manufacturer (Empire) and that it had failed and was leaking dangerous levels of gas, (despite being only a few years old) requiring a full replacement of the unit. This seemed questionable given we have two other Empire units in another structure that have been working reliably for 20 years. (he would not have known that, so maybe this tactic failed a little harder than it would have otherwise) Had another company in the area give it a look and it turned out to be one small untight connection which took him 5 minutes to fix. read more

i didn't realize when you try to edit your review it just deletes the old one. i needed a repair in the middle of escrow... the furnace room diagnosed it as the circuit board.. they ordered a new one. their tech installed it, and at first tried to write up the receipt as if the furnace was repaired. i said it isnt repaired the pilot isn't even lighting. he said "it takes a while for the circuit board to program" that didnt sound right, but i kept waiting, and said no its still not lighting the pilot. then he said, oh the transformer is down, power is going into it but not coming out of it. these are end of life symptoms you should get a new furnace" i said "how is the transformer down, power is not going coming out of it when it was obviously working before the fan wouldnt turn off" and he said "i dont know" yesterday the furnace room said they would mail me a refund check and pay for the labor for the 2nd company 5 star. look at the receipts - i forgot to attach the photos ... everyone loves photos on the on the internet... $269 and it was a scam on the blower lead huh? .. classy! so glad the 2nd company was honest with me. he told me when you wire it this way it makes the transformer seem like its not working not sure how long that scam has been going around, but didnt need this ... especially during escrow. so glad i didnt give the furnace room 5k for a new furnace.. and so glad i didnt hand the receipt to the new owners the first way.. just lie and say it was working when i last saw it ... read more

This company(family owned business) is a liar. Here are the facts: 1. The office lady was very rude. 2. I wasn't told to pay for diagnose fee($79) in advance, but the office lady kept yelling at me: 'I don't care, you need to pay today, and we don't send bill, you just need to pay now!!'. 3. The heat pump was installed less than 2 year. Doesn't work at night, when temperature was very low. I was told this is normal, and all their customers either don't use a lot at night or get used to it. Then what's the point of having this shit? I was also told it works great during summer. The fact we need it most in this freezing winter. (I have to say the technician guy, Greg was great, and doing his job professionally. I met with over 6 different AC contractors for quotes, and Ryan Emory of The Furnace Room offered to have the full air duct replacement to make the entire system run most efficiently. I chose Ryan because he demonstrated confidence and authenticity, and I could sense that he has a good leadership with his team. Additionally, I wanted to support local independent businesses whenever possible. The crew worked full 3 days on site fully masked to reduce COVID exposure, and they were always professional. Also, they were sensitive to the tenants "working at home," giving notice before power is shutdown or loud noise will be made, such that arrangements will be made to avoid video conferencing or online class during those times. Despite having to have 3 separate San Jose City permit inspections to complete the job, Ryan and his team worked through the wild fire days of last October to complete and attain the SJC permit. I needed to upgrade the heating system for my home (which has no ducts) from my old, clunky, dirty, expensive propane heaters that barely kept the house warm at all in the winter. The Furnace Room gave me two options for my mini-split heat pump system (heating one bedroom or both) and the bids on each were very competitive with others I received. I visited their Soquel office to hear and watch the heat pump in action to make sure it was quiet and the controls were simple. The system took 2 days to install (they'd scheduled it for 3 just in case) and everything went very smoothly. I was a miserable 8 month pregnant woman living in SLV during the middle of summer. My husband, bless his soul, decided that a happy wife is a happy life and told me that he was going to install air conditioning in our home. He had done a lot of research because he initially thought that he could install a ductless system himself, he was wrong. We contacted several places and The Furnace Room was the contractor who was able to come out and evaluate our situation. Ryan came out to our home and looked around, assessing our home and what we would need. He and my husband spoke at length and we decided on a ductless system that would provide cool air in the summer and heat in the winter. We were on the books within a few weeks to have the work done. The day of install, Paxton and Douglas arrived on time and were extremely polite. Morgan also came by during the install and everything was going great. They did all the electrical and anything else that needed to be added in order to make our house compatible with the new system. Greg came over later in the day and helped to finish the project by end of day. This was no small feat, but they installed the 2 ductless units in our master bedroom and nursery in one day. They were so polite and made sure to try not to disturb this 8+ month pregnant woman during their work. They laid tarps down wherever they were in our home and made sure to run a fan and vacuum when they had to drill into things, greatly cutting down on creating any dust or mess. When it was all done, Paxton walked me through using my new system and they left me standing for an hour in front of my new air condition unit turned on high. Tears of joy!!! I am so happy with this system. We were concerned that our electricity bill would be ridiculous because I had the unit on high 24hrs a day for the first month we had it. We were pleasantly surprised when our first bill came after the install and our increase was $6. $6!!!! Now that the seasons have turned and our son is here, the system is working incredible at keeping our home warm and at a consistent and comfortable temperature. This was the best investment we have made in our home. And we have the Furnace Room to thank for that. This fall, as temperatures began to drop, we decided it was time to replace our 40 year old furnace with something newer and more efficient. But as we began to depend on it, it suddenly quit working! So we needed someone get it running, at least temporarily. We called several HVAC contractors and we learned that when it turns cold, it is a bad time to look for help. Several companies couldn't commit to come out for at least a month. However, the friendly voice at the Furnace Room found a slot a few days out. Greg would come look at the furnace and also discuss options for replacing it. By the time Greg arrived, I had breathed a some life into the old furnace, so he made measurements and took time to explain the options available to us. We discussed heat pumps vs gas furnaces. Since we have natural gas, the heat pump was going to be at least twice as expensive to operate. We discussed efficiencies and 1 vs 2 stage gas furnaces. We settled on a 2-stage, 95% efficiency gas furnace. The proposal came a couple of days later. After researching furnace costs on-line, we decided their bid of $12,000 to completely replace the furnace and all the old duct work was reasonable. So we accepted the Furnace Room bit and installation was set for early January, which fit our schedule well. The installation team completed the work on time and within the bid price. All three installers were easy to talk to and very respectful. They wore masks (due to covid-19) and put plastic booties over their shoes every time they came in the house. At each point where we might have an opinion about the installation, Chris came to ask our preference before proceeding. We were very impressed with the quality of their work and their attention to detail. Unlike the previous duct work, this installation should not be knocked loose by the animals that occasionally pass through our crawl space, it is screwed, sealed and taped. Old flues were brought up to code, and they left our house and crawl space tidy and clean. We are now cozy and warm, and love the new furnace. And since the whole installation is more efficient, we have bumped the thermostat up to 70, enjoying the extra warmth that should be costing us less. It's great to finally feel warm in our home, after many years of being cold because the system was heating the outside as much as the inside of our house! We are very satisfied with our experience working with the Furnace Room Inc of Santa Cruz, as well as with the results of their work, and will definitely call them again! read more

"Bryant Furnace" shoppers beware ! The second time Bryant furnaces have failed on us because of defective heat exchangers. The last furnace only lasted four years. Both times Bryant refuse to repair and uphold their warranty. For the second time a new gas furnace has been offered to us and we are required to pay for install $$$$$$$ ( at a cost for whatever this Factory Trained local rep/ business wants to charge). The Bryant warranties are not what they claim.......easier for them to just give us a new defective furnace, have us pay expensive install fees and kick the problem down the road until the new one fails. We went with their furnace replacement and paid for the install for the first Bryant furnace failure but not this time around. Bryant and their distributors (Slakey Bros).....factory trained retailers and installers (Furnace Room) are all coordinated in these tactics and bad practices. Bryant/Carrier has in the past been a reputable name but everything went south for them and their reps beginning with the loss of a US/Canadian class action suit for faulty heat exchangers in 2008......See: Lieff, Cabraser, Heimanns & Bernstein's VS Carrier/Bryant 2008.
