I only write reviews on exemplary service, and horrible places to stay away from. With that said, the rooms were cool! Tons of history, that goes with the cities small town charm! My only issue with this hotel was the customer service from front desk personnel, more specifically "Maria." I was quoted over the phone and in person, a rate, and they tried to change the rate by close to 45% upon check-out. In a nutshell they tried charging me a higher rate than I was quoted because of an internal mistake!!! Keyword: INTERNAL MISTAKE!!! That doesn't mean customer mistake, or system failure. It means it was an internal mistake, that NO customer should be on the hook for. As far as Maria goes, she definitely needs more training in customer service, and communication. Rolling your eyes, and talking to customers in a condescending way, shouldn't be something a hotel service prides itself on. If love to stay here again because of the historical beauty of the hotel, but the humans that run and facilitate the hotel should get a lesson or refresher course in customer service!! The El Conquistador Restaurant inside the hotel...It is listed as 'Closed' but the name has only changed, it is still open. Several years ago i stayed for several days at the Gadsden Hotel and the El Conquistador restaurant is connected. I had every meal..breakfast, lunch and dinner there. The Mexican food was the best I ever had. On a recent trip to Scottsdale AZ with my wife, she was tired of me comparing every Mexican restaurant to this place and insisted on driving down to Douglas just to eat there. We found that it was no longer under the same management and it's name was going to be changed, but the food and service was still outstanding!!. The waitress was friendly, charming and eager to answer any question on the dishes and their preparation. I couldn't recommend any one single dish, I've eaten most of them and were 100% blown away. This is a beautiful hotel, lovingly restored and quite elegant in its lobby presentation. The only problem with staying there is once you leave you are still in downtown Douglas! The restaurant is reasonably priced with excellent food, and a friendly wait staff that is efficient and attentive. We particularly liked the chili rellenos and the vegetarian fajitas. Chose this hotel over options in Bisbee and so glad we did. They were sold out the night we had planned our trip to Bisbee but after viewing their website, I asked if there was anyway to find a room for us. They ended up having one guest depart early from their group booking, lucky us. If you enjoy historic buildings, you will absolutely fall in love with the lobby. The rooms have been pleasantly redone, keeping a hint of the 1920s when the hotel was rebuilt after a fire. We really enjoyed chatting with the owners who are lovingly restoring this beautiful property. We searched for a reason to find ourselves in Douglas again and plan to visit the Chiricahua National monument just so we can stay at the Gadsden again. Get out, Stay Out and do not come back!!! Thank goodness Google Maps is relatively helpful and honest! Gadsden ownership is NOT. Unfortunate things happen with traveling. However, no other business -especially a business in the HOSPITALLITY industry- has been so unaccountable for their own actions and business practices. If you expect a hospitality business to assist you and provide you with helpful advice during a difficult time, if you expect a business to be even slightly accountable for their choice of on line reservation service or employee actions, the GADSDEN is NOT the place. And understand that these actions are not the result of one unfortunate encounter with one irresponsible employee, they are the deliberate choices of the owner/manager. We made room reservations online. When our online confirmation did not mention our dog, 3 weeks prior to our arrival we called Gadsden desk clerk and she checked our reservation and verified our reservation was for a dog friendly room. When we arrived to check in at 4pm, the desk clerk that our reservation was not for a dog friendly room and they did not have a dog friendly room open. Sadly, Owner/manager Flourencio was also completely dismissive and unhelpful. Even after I pleaded to him to an least help us find another place to stay, he adamantly argued and sought small details and used those details to justify his not accommodating us and his commitment to NOT make any effort to help us find another place. As details made it clear we had in fact been very diligent to confirm our reservations and it was his employees who misled us, the Owner continuously altered his rationale & justifications further to dismiss us without providing any assistance, details below. Finally, after I repeatedly appealed to him to at least help us find another place in town, he told his desk clerk to call the Best Western (BW). He told us that BW advised they did not have any dog friendly rooms available for that night either. But he advised us to personally to go the BW and request a dog friendly room from their front desk. Fortunately, I called the Best Western before going over. The BW told me that NONE of their rooms pet friendly, they are NOT a pet friendly hotel !!! BW acknowledged that the Gadsden had just called, and they told the Gadsden they were not a pet friendly hotel So, why would the Gadsden owner advise us to go there? It would seem this was the Gadsden's owner's slimy attempt to just get us to leave without he or his staff from making any real effort to help us. And it worked. We did leave. And no customers should ever patronize an owner with business ethics like this! It is sad and unfortunate this is these are the Gadsden owner/manager's deliberate choices and business practices. Details: First, he declared his online reservation service was not reliable. He stated he wouldn't honor what his on-line reservation did. When we told him that we called his desk clerk, because the on line confirmation was not clear that we got a dog friendly room reserved, (2ndly) he said his desk clerk couldn't be held accountable for an online reservation without her getting the exact reservation number. 3rd when he realized from looking at our notes that we did provide his desk clerk with the necessary online reservation number and she confirmed that our reservation was for a dog friendly room, he then dismissed us because we could not provide the name of his employee and the exact time we called. 4th After he read our printed reservation notice, and the conversation notes, he dismissed us again because we did not insist that his employee provide us with a REVISED reservation number confirming her verbal confirmation that we were getting a dog friendly room. 5th He also stated that all his dog friendly rooms have been booked solid for 3 months. Then my questions are... why would his desk clerk not know that all dog friendly rooms have been booked for 3 months and then tell us, just 3 weeks ago, that we did have a dog friendly room reserved??? Why would his desk clerk not tell us we needed a REVISED reservation number? All of these unpleasant conversations were his justifications for just dismissing us without making any effort to help us find an alternative place to stay. .. in this fairly isolated town, where he lived and ran a business and we were not familiar with!! Even if/as he could not honor his employee's verification and our reservation for a dog friendly room, a simple apology, and a reasonable effort to assist us .. stranded travelers .. should have been provided. We had visited 2 years ago without incident, choosing to pay the significant premium to support this historical local business. But we realize now that we were just simply lucky. It is so unfortunate that the Gadsden ownership is so committed to provide no customer service. Via Google Maps, we are grateful we found simple dog friendly rooms at the Motel 6. read more

Why am I only now rating the Gadsden Hotel when I stayed there in April 1957? Well, my parents always told me that I procrastinated. Besides, I haven't spent a night in Douglas since 1995 or thereabouts. However, I have been in the Gadsden countless times and gone to many an event there. After all, the Gadsden has been the tallest building in Douglas since 1905 (except when it burned down) and outside of the Bushmasters and Douglas High School, the only place large enough to hold a large social event. Now the reasons for my rating it a "3." It's pluses are the fantastic lobby (which they brag about), the "old west" ambiance and (to me anyway) the fact that it still has an old-fashioned manually operated elevator. It's negatives are it's way too expensive for what it is, the rest rooms need to be better maintained, the old west ambiance is a little too old (as in run down) and I haven't seen the ghost they claim haunts the place. I can understand why folks would rate it a "one" and I can understand why folks would rate it a "four" but five? That's a little much. Anyone who rates it a five must be from Pirtleville and not get out very often. But what the hey, I stayed in it 56 years ago and it's been only a few days since I last wandered around through the lobby and ate in their restaurant. It's like an old shoe or an old jacket. It may be worn out but it feels comfortable. I like to stand in the lobby and imagine Pancho Villa riding down the grand staircase and picture Texas John Slaughter dealing five card stud. That's what comes to my mind when I think of the Gadsden. (P.S. The Paul Newman movie about Judge Roy Bean was partly filmed in the lobby). read more

I'm blown away, this hotel amazed me. After seeing the hotel impossible episode that featured this hotel in 2013 and parking in the rear of the hotel and seeing the general condition I was thinking maybe I should just head back home but the hotel is a general case of not judging a book by it's cover. The lobby is amazing, the restaurant is brand new and has great food. We went to the speakeasy down stairs and had better drinks than we've had a restaurants like Flemings and Capital Grille. The room was on par with the room rate, very clean, a new fridge and tv. The only thing that was ehhh was the window air conditioner and the small bathroom but that comes with the fact this hotel is more than 100 years old and pre air conditioning. The small bathroom came with the era even the Westin St. Francis (built 1904) had bathrooms the same size. So these are very easy to overlook. I'm glad to see new ownership actively involved and improving the hotel as I think they've done a great job and I am excited to come back in a year as I am sure it will be even better. read more

What an amazing hidden gem! A group of us just spent a night and this historic hotel and loved it. A young couple just purchased the property in the new year and they are two of the most amazing people you could meet. They are working very hard to bring this historic site back to life. In the meantime, they provide the best customer service I've experienced in a very long time. The owners engage with customers and it's clear they genuinely love this gorgeous building. Their level of customer service carries into the bar and restaurant. The rooms are quaint and bathrooms a little small, but that's a very small inconvenience compared to the charm of the hotel and the opportunity to meet some amazing people. I love Th Gadsden Hotel! We have stayed there twice this year on family trips. The atmosphere and history are everywhere. My children loved the stairs and the mounted mountain lion in the lobby. The suite we had on our last visit had a jacuzzi tub which was quite entertaining with all three kids splashing around. I would definately stay there again. We recently held a reception at this gorgeous hotel for 80 people. The manager was very accommodating and just lovely to work with. Where we held the reception was beautiful and the food from the restaurant was exceptional! The customer service was fantastic. The manager oversaw the reception's success by being present and making sure everything ran smoothly. We used the catering service, Casa Segovia, which runs the hotel's restaurant and the food and service was fabulous! I would highly recommend this GORGEOUS historic hotel to anyone with a party, wedding or any special occasion. read more

This review is for the restaurant. They use to have the best beef ribs in southern Arizona. Now they are not even on the menu and the staff apparently doesn't know a cow from a pig. I both called and asked about their beef ribs when I got there and was told they were on the menu but apparently the staff does not know that baby back ribs are PORK. At any rate the food was very bad. Everything was reheated. My potato was just warm. The pork ribs were just your avg fair nothing special. This is a review of the restaurant, the El Conquistador dining room, as I did not stay in the Gadsden overnight. I found the food at the hotel restaurant was really quite good. I had bean & cheese enchiladas and a michelada (like a bloody mary, but with beer instead of vodka). Everyone around me loved the food they got, including chicken fried steak, fresh squeeze lemonade, and burgers. This is a decent option for vegetarians, as it can be difficult to find veggie friendly options in the southwest and on the border of Mexico. As a side note... What an absolutely beautiful building! The place has a really fantastic history, including the fact that it was built before Arizona was officially a member of the Union... complete with rumors about civil war soldier ghosts that haunt the hotel. Remember, you're just minutes from the Mexican border at Agua Prieta, so be prepared to have an easy international excursion! The hotel's website says that "no passports or visas are needed to cross over the Mexican Border." read more

This is my second time here. I didn't want Mexican food so I came to the Gadsden hotel restaurant I don't remember what I got for dinner the first time but it must have been good cuz I'm here again. Tonight I get the chicken alfredo I'm hoping the alfredo sauce is going to be a good so I asked the waitress and she says it is homemade not out of a can. So this is what I ordered she brings it out and you get a very good serving with plenty of chicken and two pieces of garlic bread. Surprisingly this Alfredo is very good I know where to get chicken alfredo when I come out here again. If you like chicken alfredo it is definitely the place to get it. read more

While the Hotel lobby is indeed beautiful, the wedding in the lobby from noon to 11:30 PM was not. Definitely NOT. Loud music made sleep impossible. Hell it made normal conversation impossible. As far as I am concerned the people getting married shouldn't have pissed off hotel patrons satelliting around their happy day trying to get the hotel staff to turn the music down to a level that allows sleep. All the renovated rooms are ringed around the lobby, no hallway to dampen the noise level. When we went to ask for the music to be turned down, the poor desk person was right there with us, feeling bad that we couldn't sleep. They got it turned down somewhat, but... The Hotel should have let us know that there would be a loud function happening so that we could have gone elsewhere. Totally lame. When we checked out, the desk person said that Saturday functions were a regular part of the hotel's schedule. So be warned. You won't be able to sleep on Saturday nights here at the Gadsden Hotel. If you come on another night or can sleep through anything, the rooms were nice, but they have issues. We were first put into rm 128, but the window was stuck open. I was glad to move to 102 as the carpet in the first room was not laid properly, and had ridged badly enough to trip me. Not to mention that the toilet seat was less than an inch from the wall of the bathroom. Alas, the 2nd room had bad carpet ridges also! (I guess Hotel Hell didn't really care if they did it right.) The carpet was also filthy. The bed skirts are overly long and were also a tripping hazard. (wth?) The window coverings while nice, kept out zero light, and the street lights were right outside the window. It was like High Noon all night long. (Did I mention zero sleep?) Beds nice. No fridge, and the microwave was on the floor..? read more

My husband and I stayed at the Gadsden in order to attend a function over the weekend. We stayed in room 108 (facing the lobby on the second floor) which is one of the renovated rooms. The Hotel is old, charming, and the staff if very accommodating. The room itself, while updated, was small- but that is normal for historic hotels- at least here in AZ. If you want a 5 star hotel with a large room and all the modern conveniences, then this is not the place for you. It can get loud if people are in the lobby but for the most part, we slept well and really enjoyed our stay. **TIP: Make your reservation with the hotel and not through a 3rd party or you risk getting one of the old rooms. Ask for the newly renovated rooms. Also, if you want Wi-Fi, you have to ask. They don't give out the password freely or have it listed in the rooms. read more

We stayed in room 333. Bed was horribly hard and uncomfortable. We ate in the restaurant for breakfast. Breakfast menu ends at 11am which sucks, so I had the chimichanga it was so plain just roast beef with chopped green Chile, no sour cream, no guacamole, no cheese, no onion not good. Decided to give it a second chance for dinner. We waited for about 10 min just for menu's. Come to find out they pretty much where out of all of the steak choices except the ribeye, which the server wasn't even sure of from the start. They need to shape up!!! This restaurant was absolutely awful! The service was slow, drinks took 20 minutes, it took them another 15 to take our order and then the food was dreadful. I ordered a simple breakfast burrito (eggs and bacon wrapped in a tortilla) thinking that would be good. Wrong I was. The burritos had a very noticeable fish taste and the toast on the side came out broken and dried up. Their coffee was so weak that it could have been mistaken for water. Unless you want to waste time and have an awful breakfast, go to Denny's or even Kandy's. The only plus about this place was that the waitresses are so very nice. Not a good eatery. read more

Just spent the night at the Gadsden. What a terrific place! A historical grand hotel with new owners as of 1/1/17. Being a "grand old Hotel", the new owners have really improved all aspects of the Gadsden. The service was impeccable at every level. The renovated rooms were new, clean and welcoming. New beds, bedding and furniture make the rooms quite comfortable. The restaurant meals were reasonably priced and quite delicious. Service was prompt and courteous. The old elevator was a "hoot". We sat out on the mezzanine with a drink before dinner and just enjoyed the grandness of it all. If you are traveling anywhere close to Douglas, AZ, this is the place to stay!! This review is for the restaurant. No. No. No. Dinner was incredibly bad. The rib eye was not recognizably as a rib eye, poorly cooked and had no capers and garlic butter as advertised. They were out of baked potatoes even though there were only 2 other diners so I had the mashed. The mashed was terrible, some lumps in a gruel. The salad was actually very good. The rolls were reheated frozen rolls. The lobby is charming, the rooms are very shabby and no no no to the restaurant. Should have negative stars. read more

Ate here on Mother's Day for breakfast and although the service from the waitresses wasn't all that great, the food was good. The new kitchen manger at the time, even came to each table to ask how everyone's meal was and we overheard no complaints about the food, only that they needed more waitresses. I ate there again for breakfast this weekend and all I can say is that I should've just gone to McDonald's. The service wasn't only worse than our previous visit but the food is now just as bad. Our food took over 45 minutes to arrive, was cold, looked old, and tasted horrible. When we told the waitress this, she then took our plates and said she'd have the cook redo each plate. 30 minutes later the waitress brought out the same food from before only it looked as if it had microwaved a few times, making it look overcooked and dry. We decided not to eat it but were told we still had to pay for it. We, unlike what most people would've done, paid for our nearly uneaten meal with no complaints. I did ask though, if the same kitchen manger from Mother's Day was working. I was told he no longer worked for the Gadsden and I'm thinking this is probably due to the fact that he wised up and found better work or if he was fired, he found that he'd be better off. So the next time I feel like eating out for breakfast, I'll take a McMuffin instead :-D read more

I had never been to Douglas and my lady friend who grew up in Bisbee and Douglas wanted to show me the Gadsden Hotel. She said it is a hysterical land mark and you have got to see it. And to eat in the hotel restaurant was a treat when she grew up. I am from Phoenix and she lives in Sierra Vista and we travel to Douglas to see the Great Gadsden Hotel. Upon entry the Hotel is an eye full. Beautiful piece of history preserved as well as can be. Stained glass windows and marble entries. My lady friend lit up with joy to share her stories of days when she too first walked in to this master of grandeur. Now after the tour of the entrance, we walked to the restaurant and decided to try it out. There was one one customer in there so we had many choices of tables. We walked through to the cafe and passed a lady who was painting some signs at the counter. She said she would move if the fumes were too bad. We chose a booth by the door and were not bothered by the fumes. The lady was nice and seemed to be the owner or manager of the restaurant and I told her we saw the bad reviews but wanted to eat here just to say we had. She said they had been through 3 chefs in the past 8 months and now they have a new one and he is really good. I said ok let's try him out and I would review him on Yelp. We order the cheese crisp with green chillies, nachos, and tacos for the appetizers, then we ordered hamburgers with fries and one with onion rings. Well, pros and cons here. First, the waitress came back to me and said they are out of green chilies, I said ok, see what you can find. Then the cheese crisp came to the table with the green chillies. I guess the chef found a can and he put the whole can on the tortilla. I could have made that at home. My biggest complaint was the let tubs that was served with a slice of onion on it to top the hamburger. It was rotten, brown and wilted. Good thing it was not on the burger. If I ate that I would have gotten sick for sure. I called the waitress back after lifting the dried onion that had obviously been sitting out and dried up on one side. I gave her the plate and asked her if she would eat that, she said no, the I asked her then why would she serve it? She said she would let the Chef know. Wow, got a fresh piece of lettuce on the second round. I had to ask the waitress for mayo, catchup and mustard. We waited for at least 5 minutes for her to return with it and she gave me two containers which she said was the chefs special mayo. I opened one container and smelled it and told her I wanted mayo not tarter sauce. She again said it's the chefs special recipe. I said no it's tarter sauce and I would like some mayo with no shit in it. She said they didn't have any and I told her to go see what she could find. Low and behold, she came back with two containers with mayo. Now the burger was cooked perfect for me and the fries were crunchy and good. The onion rings were a little over done but I was hungry so I ate them. I survived. Outside of the freshness issue, presentation and the waitress's reluctance to fix the issues I had, and the dated decor, it was ok. When we left the restaurant was full and the average age of the customers were in their 60s. If they want the restaurant to be profitable, they need to fix many things. One being the standards of the chef and the waitress experience on how to deal with customers. In closing, I won't go back to the Gadsden hotel to eat. It was cool to see it but they need Chef Ramsey to go in and fix that because it needs help for sure. Hope they get the chef they need to fix the menu. read more

The lobby of this former gem of the southwest is beautiful, but unless you're in the area for other business, don't waste your time. The history and tales of bygone days are unfortunately the only things left in poor old Douglas, AZ. The Gadsden hotel is one of a scant few buildings in this downtrodden town, that isn't either abandoned or boarded up. We checked in and immediately checked out! Pretty photos on the hotel's website are misleading and do not represent the horribly dirty and decrepit condition of the rooms. I can say that the staffers at the front desk were very sweet and even told us of others that had left for the same reason. They explained that only a few rooms had been updated but progress was almost at a standstill because the building itself is so old. They encountered a myriad of expensive problems with the aged infrastructure, preventing further updates. Save yourself the gas and stay in Bisbee, about 25 miles west. read more

No ghosts here, just roaches. Fiancé wanted to plan a weekend trip to check out some old western towns/ghost towns nearby and thought staying in this historic haunted hotel would be a great choice. I should have paid more attention to the area this hotel is in because it is not safe. Every building is boarded up, the town is deserted, and the locals make it clear you do not belong there. We received the worst service from every staff member we encountered at the hotel, restaurant, etc. The food wasn't even very good- not even the Mexican food and you expect better 500 feet from the border. The margaritas in the bar were actually really good, the highlight of the trip. I can deal with the small bathrooms, I can deal with the decaying windows, I can deal with the 25 year old tube televisions in the rooms. The hotel is old and the lobby is beautiful. But what I can't deal with is roaches. Found roaches crawling in my room (105) and the hotel staff couldn't car less. They were so apathetic about the situation. I asked to change rooms and they gave me room 125 because nobody was staying there anyway. 160 hotel rooms here and I imagine there were like 4 guests there on the Saturday we stayed over. We didn't see another guest the entire time except two couples in the bar. So room 125 was fine, we did not physically see any roaches. Of course I'm sure they were just hiding in the walls but we still managed to sleep through the night. I think the potential is there for the Gadsen but I don't see how they could ever unleash it. I don't think anyone really goes to Douglas, AZ and I can't believe I actually let my fiancé take me! Not safe! So with few guests staying at the Gadsen I don't believe it would be financially viable for them to do all the remodeling they need. That lobby though. read more

This historic hotel is the best kept secret in the state. Bisbee claims tits Copper Queen and Prescott brags on the Hassayampa, but the Gadsden put both those buildings to shame! The beautiful 2 story lobby has a white marble staircase leading to the Mezzanine floor which overlooks the lobby with its marble pillars and grand piano. The lobby ceiling is stained glass and there is a second floor lounge deck overlooking the main street. The walls of the historic western bar are decorated with the brands of the many ranches of Cochise County. The dining room has beautiful old murals of Spanish conquistadors. The elevator is right out of the 19th century and adds to the ambiance of timelessness. You have to see the Gadsden to believe it! The staff is so pleasant and friendly. The new owners are working hard to restore the entire hotel to its former dignity. This place looks like something that should be in Paris or London! read more

This is a nice place to bring people when they are visiting just to look at the inside because of it's rich history. However, the last time we brought visitors to the restaurant the food was terrible. We will no longer go to this restaurant and stick to the Grand Cafe across the street which is always great. read more

Big on charm, short on common sense. I was not told that they would be having a LOUD wedding in the lobby all day and night. It is now 11 pm and the music is still blaring. Because of the set up of the hotel, there are no walls between the lobby and the rooms. This shows an extreme disrespect for the guests here. Had I known this, I would have checked out today. Instead, I'm stuck in my room being kept awake by a frat party. read more
