This place is located right where two highways meet which probably helps drive in business. We spent about 5-10 minutes browsing through the store without anyone greeting us. It was kind of strange how silent the two employees were while my husband and I walked around. Prices are healthily inflated for unsuspecting tourists and many products were from non Gilroy/Central Valley businesses and things you could easily buy at a WalMart. I was looking for more locally produced items. We did purchase several products but discovered that some of the containers didn't have any seals on them. Just the bottle cap, no safety sticker inside and no plastic wrapping outside which seems like a complete health code violation! Our fault for not checking better but wanted to warn future customers. Restroom was out of service leaving a dirty, unkept porta potty as your only option. Inside the store wasn't much better; there was many employees on shift but none of them greeted you or showed any interest. Counters were dusty. Tasting station was not set up. As I walked in with my friend (we're from Los Angeles) I wasn't greeted by staff and couldn't find anyone to assist me with finding certain items. I needed to use the bathroom and only saw one sign (that i missed) on the side of the door. As I realized the bathrooms are locked, I exited immediately. A older Caucasian woman approached me and asked if I used the restroom and I said no. She disrespected my friend and ignored her when she bought items and proceeded to call me a liar and demanded that I'm honest. I felt threatened and in fear because of how aggressive she became. There are lots of garlic shops in Gilroy, but how many have a donkey? The Garlic Shoppe does! This store is located at the southern end of Gilroy near the intersection of Highways 25 and 101. Access is off Highway 25 so you need to exit onto 25 from 101 and make a U-turn. This is a classic garlic shop with garlic everything. There are lots of locally made food items like salsa, hot sauce, mustard, and plain garlic alongside other gourmet picnic items and wine. Staff was friendly and helpful in choosing items and helping with selections. I left with some delicious garlic mustard and some Pepper Plant hot sauce of course! There are a few animals in the parking lot making for a nice photo op. Hours are pretty good too for the area making The Garlic Shoppe a great stop. read more

Overall, felt this place was a waste of our time... everything is overpriced. Lots of random, unorganized dusty stuff in the back that made it feel like you're in a flea market shop. We decided to try the garlic ice cream which cost $3 for a small cup. They had the regular flavor and chocolate and we got the original. It was probably the worst ice cream I've ever had... tasted basically like creamy garlic powder... If you stop by here, at least stay away from the garlic ice cream. read more

Must stop roadside attraction in Gilroy. I've passed it a few times on my way to Monterrey and slo, but finally stopped. You get out of the car and it immediately smells of garlic! Yum! Inside it has anything you can think of- and it all has garlic in it. This place is a waste of time!! Stopped by on the way home 2/20/2021 from a trip to pick up Pepper Plant sauce (the garlic one). The shelves were practically bare and what they did have was very very limited as far as selection!! Immediately as I walked in I was stopped by the owner and told that Santa Clara county had banned face gaiters and cloth masks and was given a paper mask which honestly makes no sense but I complied. I looked it up after and it is not true but just wait the lies kept coming!!! I asked about Pepper Plant Sauce specifically the 64oz jug and was told that I wouldn't find ANY!! Because the company was out of it till next Thursday!?!? He informed me that his place was the only one who even carried it which is another LIE!! I didn't think it was the right place because I had remembered the store being much bigger and then I remembered it was Garlic World up the street so we immediately left and headed to Garlic World! Upon entering Garlic World I asked the two very helpful young men working about the Pepper Plant Sauce and was told it was in the back section of their store, as I had remembered. I also asked about the face gaiters and cloth masks being banned and they had no idea what I was talking about!! Not only did they have what I was looking for but the shelves were completely stocked!!! They had every flavor and in EVERY SIZE!! Including the 64oz jug that the liar at garlic shoppe claimed to be the only one to carry!! What also made no sense was he demanded I wear a paper mask over my face gaiter but yet they had an old dirty big hairy dog lying right in the middle of the store as well as a cooler door that was next to all the beverages for sale that was for "employees only" containing personal drink containers. I'm not sure how sanitary it is to allow your employees to store their personal drink containers that they drink off of all day in the cooler next to beverages for sale!!! Like I said WASTE OF TIME! Just go to garlic world they are friendly, the store is clean, fully stocked and in great order and the port-a potty isn't filled to almost the top of the seat with human waste like Garlic Shoppes and most of all they aren't going to lie to you about products and face coverings!! They have a ton of great stuff having to do with garlic mostly. They have a garlic steak sauce I love. I can't find it any place other than here so it becomes a mandatory stop anytime I pass by. I make Beef jerky with the steak sauce and the garlic BBQ sauce they have. They have a great selection of sauces, jams and seasonings. I really like this place more than the others in the same area. I feel like they have a more robust selection and it's always fun to stop. If you love garlic you have to check this place out. read more

There are a few reasons I won't be back nor would I recommend this place to anyone. First being, everything is dusty and ridiculously overpriced. Second, the cashier who resembles Santa was rude and unwelcoming. After making a purchase I asked to use the bathroom and he gave me directions followed by telling me, "go left don't use the one on the right or you'll be sorry." I reached for my bag of items I purchased and he literally stopped my hand with his and took the bag back. I was confused and he said, "it's not so u don't steal, but you can leave your bag here". Probably my new favorite spot! If passing through Gilroy it should be on your list to come here. It's not super big but they have a ton of stuff, and even pony petting outside! There are some standard seasoning and sauces just like any other "shoppe" but they do carry a line of special Gilroy Garlic seasonings. We bought way to much stuff to list, but two of the best things are a seasoning brand from Big Cock Ranch (yes, that's the name) called "Special Sh!t" and "Good Sh!t" they are SO GOOD! The other purchase worth mentioning is the Garlic Pasta sauce. I'm not a fan of premade sauce but this was really good strait out of the can. We also got to try garlic ice cream, and opted for the chocolate. It wasn't bad, but as you'd expect it was chocolatey and garlicy. I'm giving five stars because not only is that place top notch but some days they give you free wine tasting to the winery behind the shoppe just for purchasing something! Which, by the way, you should also check that place out. Some of the best wine I've ever had and the owner is super entertaining. Found my favorite salsa..fair orice. However, order defaulted to next day shipping. Upon discovering this my wife called to correct..was tol they would take care of it. They didnt..5 calls later i was basically told tough..ir is what it is. $20 charge to ship 30 miles. Will never, ever buy from them again. No big deal, since we saw a car parked and figured it was an employee car. We waited and waited and then another couple come over to see if the shop was open and as of 9:10am, it wasn't. A girl stepped out of the car and said she was waiting on a coworker with keys who is notorious for being late. She called him, but kept her cool. "He's around the corner, I'm so sorry." So we were just waiting and he pulled up around 9:15. He did NOT apologize for being late, didn't acknowledge anyone; he didn't offer anything to rectify the fact that 5 people, including a coworker, were waiting on him. My dad asked about the garlic and as the girl was telling him, Mr. Dont-give-a-crap cuts in with attitude to correct her. Love that girl, FIRE that dude, because he doesn't care about being there or having a job. And give that girl keys and take them away from him! They have various veggies pickled in jars, garlic oils, garlic nuts, garlic salsa, garlic chips, pasta and stuff like garlic ice cream 'll pass on. The spices and sauce collection are quite extensive too. There's even stuff unrelated to garlic like wine and fruit spreads. The Shit spice collection by Big Cock Ranch is as good as it is a novelty. I put that Aw Shit on everything and will find a way to find it somewhere near once I run out. The jerky collection is quite nice too. You have a choice of elk, duck, alligator, boar, ostrich, buffalo or pheasant- a carnivores delight! I would stop here again next time I'm passing through here! read more

We intended on going to Garlic World, but it was actually closed that day so up next was, Garlic Shoppe. I'm not sure what I expected. Probably all home made single label items. A Mom and Pop store feel. Very much handmade, artisan goods. What I got was a gift shop of canned goods and appetizers, kinda like a Bevmo. Basically this place is a Bevmo of garlic when I was expecting a winery. They have a ton of different kinds of garlic and make none of them. The honey picked up some pumpkin butter, and I picked up some artichoke hearts and pickled garlic which I ended up throwing out. The butter wasn't anything much to speak of (I'd prefer to attend a Farmer's market and pick up a homemade preserve) the artichoke hearts were a big hit and the pickled garlic tasted very very strange. The space itself was thrown together very haphazardly, seeming to have been styled with items no longer working or found laying around. I think it was meant to have a vintage re-purposed look, but not enough TLC and shine went into the re-vamped fridges and vintage bookcases and it looked far too weathered to be chic. The service was offhand polite and they had fair prices but it's not a high class or artisan shop by any means. It's just a gift shop, trying to get you to buy things you don't need. read more

First off, Adrian Z nails this place in his review (link below) You've got a touristy stop (as you might expect) with some interesting local samples & garlicky treats. You've also got an eerily uninhabited, unlit back portion of the sales room where walkers and the undead *might* be lurking. And then there's the Pepper Plant sauce. Kind of a lot of Pepper Plant sauce, even if it's a little pricier than it can be found elsewhere ($5.99 a bottle vs $4.99 up the street at Garlic World). They've even got the the Dry Seasoning and Original & Chunky Garlic in half-gallon size, which you almost never find (also both available and cheaper at Garlic World)! So I'm left with that Bud Light commercial in mind, where the hitchhiker has a bloody axe in one hand and a case of Bud Light in the other. We've stopped by The Garlic Shoppe a handful of times during road trips between northern and southern California and it is a quaint little shop with a nice owner. Lots of local offerings and of course garlic flavored offerings, as that is what the area is famous for. My favorite is the farm animals kept in the adjacent parking lot. Yesterday as the owner closed up shop he told me I could feed the animals some hay before we left and I was elated despite being allergic to hay, I couldn't resist because they were so cute. 2 horses, 3 cows, a donkey, and a chicken in the tree.
