I love this place. It's the perfect spot for lunch and snacks. The town is very expensive. They have some good restaurants, but they are all pricy. To save a buck, come here and get lunch, drinks, and snacks. We came here twice in our week's stay across the street. The first time I had the chorizo sandwich and the next time I had the tamale (a bit tooo dry for my liking) and the ravioli soup (reminded me of chef boyardee with more broth and veggies thrown in). I really liked the soup and would order it again along with the sandwich. I also picked up a watermelon $7.00 for a whole watermelon was so much cheaper then buying berries or oranges. I asked the produce guy where the knives were to cut up my watermelon as I didn't bring one on this trip. Who would bring a giant knife on a trip?! He was a gem. He offered to cut it for me. He even took off the rind, cut out the seeds. After a week, 99% of the watermelon has been eater. He saved me lots to money and gave me lots of tasty snacks. They have a huge wine collection, including local vineyards . If you need it, they have it. They even have a slushy machine in the deli. If you want a fresh salad, make it. yourself and pay by the pound. We also got a chicken salad sandwich, made as you wish at the deli. This place is a must stop. You won't regret it. Walked in and looked at the hot food options, then then at the deli case and the boards with the food menus. Both ladies working didn't great us or even acknowledge we were there. I really want to love this market, I want to love it so much I stop there even though I know I will most likely be disappointed. I typically don't get anything super exciting here but I really want to love the deli and ready to eat items and give them a try again and again. This last time I got a small cold sandwich that I assumed by the date was made that morning. Maybe it was. But it was so soggy the bread fell off as I went to bite into it. Bought a chicken curry burrito. The most disgusting thing I have ever tasted. Not one to complain usually but decided they needed to know. The tortilla covering was soggy and slimy and the ingredients tasted worse than awful. Unbelievable. It was 8 pm probably sat there all day if not all week. I took it in and told the two ladies working in the deli. They were very nice. They wanted to have me tell someone so they motioned for someone to come over. I do not think any managers were around so up strolls some 16 year old wise ass I told him the sandwich was the worst thing I ever tasted and he shrugged his shoulders and said I didn't make it. I told him I realized that just wanted to let them know so they could check it out. He asked me ok so what do you want me to do about it?I did not come back in for anything but to let them know but with his attitude I told him I would like a refund. Two bites out of it. Second one to be sure it was so gross. I spit it out in trash can outside. He said he couldn't help me with that and acted like a total idiot kid that knows nothing except smart ass and helps run businesses that work hard to do their best into the ground. I won't go back and hopefully the management trains their help to not be rude especially when the customer is not being rude and has a very horrible taste left in their mouth after spending ten bucks on food and left hungry still no compensation or other item offered. The ladies behind deli very sweet and classy the jack ass punk that was standing around doing nothing and tried to fill in as a manager was way out of his league. For just over 40 bucks I got all this food! Granted I'm only shopping for myself. But I found this super market a great stopping on my way home through the central valley. It was clean and organized. And the produce was awesome! The prices were pretty decent as well. What I was really impressed with was the meat selection. I buy small portions because as I mentioned I'm only shopping for myself. So I don't need a lot. I was able to buy affordable high quality meat. I got a New York steak for just under five dollars. And three pork chops for $3.50. Great deal! And I found a really yummy looking sourdough bread that will last me two weeks. They also have a wide selection of other things if you need that. Like medicine and deodorant first aid supplies etc. I highly recommend stopping here for a stretch break if you're driving along this road. read more

I (wife) ordered a breakfast burrito with no sausage. I got a burrito with sausage. I said, "I asked for no sausage, can you remake it?" She very rudely said,"Well, I'm not going to remake it. I'm just going to pick out the sausage". I gave her the burrito (and my husband's) and walked out of the store. I had another terrible customer service experience a while back, but the food is pretty good (and there isn't much around in SJB), so I came back. I won't make that mistake again. Hollister and Prunedale aren't that far away. As a side note, they have a sign on the women's bathroom door that says "No men allowed". I am pretty sure this is illegal in California. read more

Three stars... Not going to say that this place is good or not going to say this place is bad. This store appears to cater to the local community here, but those who are staying in the hotel across the street will appreciate it being close by here. This is a typical grocery store and it appears to be the only one for miles according to Yelp and Waze. It is smaller than say Lucky's or Safeway but does have things like a Deli and other items you can have cooked and taken away. The alcohol here is considerably higher than back home (I can get a Steel Reserve for $2.19 at 7-11 on Jackson Street in Hayward and it's $2.69 a can here) Also, for obvious reasons the medication items are not in any of the isles, they are in the front of the registers. So if you need something of the medicine variety, you'll need to make that your last thing to look for before leaving the store. It is a store and it's there to serve it's purpose, that's about it. Cashier was friendly on checkout though. read more

The Wraps, the Windmill Club sandwich and the tostadas (All are delicious) I recommend to ask the tostadas in a side if you want them to go. The staff is polite and friendly but the staff that prepare the sandwiches/burritos/wraps sometimes is slow... so if you are hurry I recommend to get something for the bar that is already made. read more

This is an IGA associated market just off the highway right on the main way into San Juan Bautista. This is located in s trip mall shopping thingy and as such has a lot of parking. Unless it's a festival day in San Juan Bautista there will always be lots parking, and even on the busiest festival days, there is likely to be a spot somewhere in that lot. This is a medium to largish store and as such will carry just about anything you'll need for the kitchen. The produce section is smaller then you might , but does have a bargain bin of soon to expired veggies for cheap. Like three pounds for a dollar cheap. Sure you need to prepare or freeze them as soon as you get home, but serious savings can be had. The wine selection is both larger and of higher quality then you'd expect. The wine section is actually better then most liquor stores. Pricing for the wine can be as low as three to five dollars all the way up to several hundred for some premium thing. There is an indifferent (quality wise) hot bar and a deli which is very popular. The latino styled food offerings-burritos, tacos etc, are both better and cheaper then any similiar options in town. All in all it's pretty solid pit stop choice. read more

Windmill market is a medium sized market with a hot food bar and a deli that you can pick up sandwiches, burritos and more. I work nearby and my co-workers go to Windmill on a regular basis to grab lunch. I've never seen such a selection of spicy chip options. They have almost of the classic chips in a spicy/hot version. I was starving and I ordered a chicken burrito with everything and the verde salsa. It took maybe 10 minutes and only cost 5 bucks. It's not a HUGE burrito but it's filling enough without being sleep inducing. The burrito was an okay burrito. The flavor was alright and the chicken wasn't really seasoned. For my personal tastes it needed a bit more seasoning and wasn't the best burrito. I'm on a search now to find the best $5 burrito but I can't say Windmill's is my favorite. They do have a seating area outside which is a good place to eat your lunch without having to go back to work. The customer service was okay but nothing too special either. I'll probably come back and maybe try one of the sandwiches next time. read more

This market is totally legit. Fresh produce, hot lunch bar, full deli and tons of bevs, from wine and craft brews to energy drinks and Seattle's Best. Come anytime for the best tacos and burritos in a ten miles. They serve the lunch menu all day long. This can be you daily local market for all types of household items, or just a quick stop for brews on your way to the golf course. One star away from perfect. They used to have "free coffee Friday" but have stopped because free loaders were taking advantage of the free service. Mostly everyone is bilingual too. Cool. read more

I've lived here 6 years, so I have quite a bit of data to back what I'm about to say. The only thing worthwhile in the entire store is the produce, and its horrible. I say worthwhile because sometimes the prices are good, but you might be purchasing a rotten avocado (the odds are high), or potatoes that taste like wood chips (like what happened a couple of days ago). The lettuce is wilted, the fruit is ultra expensive or rotten or both. Organic bananas are decent, I buy those. The non organic bananas look diseased while green, they are that bad. The tomatoes aren't horrid. Their prepackaged organic lettuce is crazy expensive ($3.49 for 5 oz; same price for 16 oz at Costco). All other non-perishable items are severely over-priced. The milk is bottom of the barrell quality except for the organic they sometimes carry in 1/2 gallons, that's decent but way overpriced. Chips are outrageously priced. Think gas station on a roadtrip expensive. I wouldn't trust them to even purchase a burrito given the low quality of the produce. San Juan Bautista is a black hole, I love the people here, but you have to travel to Morgan Hill or Monterey or possibly Salinas for anything decent. Sad but true. read more

I have given Windmill Market a fair try, visiting a considerable amount of times before writing this. So unfortunate that this is such a nice market with huge potential. But the FACT is this place is f*cking disgusting and filthy when it comes to getting prepared food. The salad bar would be amazing but there is always a horrible gross sight when I go. People's fingerprints are all over everything and I am talking fingerprints where someone gets dressing on their hand and wipes it on the glass which is not cleaned or maintained through the day. Then there are the flies and this is the nastiest thing of all. There is always a swarm of flies around the fruit bar, salad bar, hot bar. One time I wanted fruit and scooped up a piece of melon. There was a fly treading water in the melon dish and it climbed onto my spoon like it was a victim of a shipwreck. I wanted to throw up. There are flies all over the food every single time I have visited. Flies crawling all over the cups for soup and dressings. To me this is just disgusting and unsanitary and I don't get how management seems to think it's not a problem, apparently. Lastly the biggest problem are the employees because no matter what section of the store I'm in, they are always talking. Like the cashiers are standing back-to-back carrying on inappropriate conversations with each other, or the women at the deli are constantly chatting as they make food and I have had to interrupt to tell one she was making my food not how I had asked for. Maybe 1 of the 5 I saw behind the counter could wipe down the salad bar and swat a fly every hour? Is that too much to suggest? I don't know...not coming here anymore. read more

Anytime you go anywhere and buy packaged food, you're taking a chance on any number of variables affecting the outcome of your meal. I've been coming here for 15 years and have never gotten a bad sandwich. They make in front of me and they are using fresh ingredients. They hand it to me and I walk out and eat it. Went back again shouldn't have but there is nothing fast and quick to eat when visiting san juan. I ordered 2 tacos which cost $5, I got one table spoon of carnitas on each taco.
