After a morning exploring Niagara Falls, the Mr. & I decided to drive out to Niagara on the Lake, for a late lunch and to take a look around. After a search on YELP, I chose The Garrison House. The Garrison House is super cute, with a varied menu, full service bar, and friendly and attentive service. The Mr. & I were torn between the cottage pie and the Garrison burger. They had me at 'horseradish mayo' so we went with both, with a plan to share. We didn't even tell the server this was our plan, but she anticipated it anyway, and brought us two sharing plates! Both the cottage pie and the burger were made with Cumbrae Farms ground beef which was delicious. Why isn't horseradish mayo a thing on more burgers?? Truthfully, I can't stop thinking about it. Maybe I can figure out how to duplicate it... Anyway, if we were locals we'd be regulars! read more

My only negative was that I asked for my steak medium rare and it came medium well, which was fine because it was still very good. This place was chosen because it was close to the hotel we are staying at. We were greeted with a warm welcome immediately upon stepping foot close to the door. Our server, Fallon, was extremely nice and attentive. I opted for the cottage pie and my husband the burger. Both of our meals were unbelievably delicious. In fact, I could have used a round 2 of my meal. I don't mind spending hard earned money if it's good. And this was definitely a good meal. Came from California and was expecting a burger and fried chicken to be universal at a gastropub. For a 26 dollar burger it was painfully dry and they put the lettuce on the bottom- is that a Canada thing? It wilts and shrinks the lettuce especially when they use shredded lettuce. The hot honey is technically fried chicken but it is a chicken cutlet not traditional fried chicken. It is a lightly breaded chicken breast and agin over cooked and under seasoned .the 14 dollar onion soup was the best thing we had that wasn't below average but being a chef I know the cost of the soup and the mark up is outlandish for a slightly above average soup. I would understand the mark up if was in the town square but it's by a shoppers a bit out of the center of things. I came strictly from the reviews and I felt a bit mislead. read more

let me just start out the food is honestly pretty good and I would rate it probably a 9/10. ambiance is great, intimate setting and nice outdoor seating. The waitress we had was very well informed and had a good service too. I would say the only thing I would improve on, is either have a shorter time for dinners to come out, or be clear with clients that it'll be a bit before everything comes out because every dish is made fresh. We were talking amongst ourselves at the table and we all mentioned that we don't mind waiting for food especially when its this good, but we would've enjoyed an appetizer while we waited if we knew it would be 45 mins to an hour before our food came out. What a fantastic family dinner by a restaurant serving up some great quality food and service + great COVID protocol making the whole experience very comfortable. Headed to NOTL for a seasonal family dinner and after jumping in and out of the car a few times trying to find a place that was being diligent with their health and safety we settled on Garrison. They did a great job checking vax passes, safe seating, serving, and cleaning. The Garrison is a wonderful spot with a quality menu, great selection for everyone, serving up locally inspired and flavourful eats. Most of the brews are local and mix drinks are creative and fun. All the food was such great quality and served hot and tasty with a friendly smile by knowledgeable staff. We started with the calamari and it was AWESOME! Super fresh, large pieces, and serviced with a delicious garlic sriracha sauce. The salads are MASSIVE and I think made with some of the freshest veg and lettuce I've had! The house salad is gently dressed with a bright flavour and features roasted almonds and radishes. 2 of us split this and it probably could have served a 3rd! We also split a burger and DAMN this burger was ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL! Thick local beef patty perfectly cooked medium in a red wine glaze with horseradish mayo, bacon, beer mustard (YUM), and lettuce on a super fresh bun. The burger was served with dang good fresh fries too, crispy and light, hot and perfectly salted. This burger is prob in my top 5 fav burgers! At the table also ordered was the special tomato and fennel soup with fresh croutons and a baguette + the Arctic char special with roasted new potatoes and veg with a tomato chutney and it was beautiful!!! Overall this dinner was so delicious and wonderfully presented! In a tough time with the pandemic, the Garrison is doing a fantastic job at bringing people together over great food in a safe way. Ever since I got the steak 3 years ago when I visited Niagara On The Lake, I've been craving it ever since! Was able to come back after a day trip to the wineries and they did not disappoint. They extended their patio so it was nice to be out but sitting inside is nice also as you can see inside the kitchen and see the chefs in action like you see on TV. I asked for a Medium Rare and the steak was cooked the way I liked it. The jus compliments the steak SO well. Makes it juicy and adds some flavour. Never a dry bite. I was worried that the fries would just get soggy on the jus over time but surprisingly they were done before that happened they were enjoyable to eat throughout. Can't wait to come back. read more

So, so good. Partner had the burger and said it was great! The mustard was probably the best part. I got the chicken sandwich. It's made with chicken thighs so it's super juicy and the breading is AMAZING. Fries were also great. The star of the show for both of us was the seasonal mozzarella tomato salad. There were slices of plums and apricots in it as well, and a cherry vinaigrette and the flavors were just perfect together. AND it was gorgeous. I don't understand why this has as high a rating - anyone who recommends this place doesn't season their own food. The food was below average - we got the mushroom tart, which came out half cold and the pastry was undercooked. The chicken sandwich, the breading was burned and had no seasoning. The cottage pie, which was beyond bland. No salt, just potatoes and the "brisket" was just ground beef. But that's not even the worst part! I asked for extra ranch with my chicken, and they charged me 2$ for a small condiment cup! $2 to make my food edible! It all left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

I can not say enough about the Garrison House. It's a little more than walking distance from Niagara on the lake town center. We arrived before it filled up but it filled up fast and after tasting the food we know why. We went on a Friday so it was Fry Fish Friday. So of course I had the fish and chips. The fish was not a tiny piece. The batter was crispy and delicious encasing the delicate halibut. Best fried fish I ever had. And I don't know what was different about the tartar sauce but I'm typically not a huge fan and I couldn't get enough! The fries were fresh cut and salted to my taste but might ask for a little less salt if your more sensitive (I loved it!). We had a local wine which can't be more local as it was from the vineyard across the street. So delicious! Best meal for us so far in Canada. We picked this place for my wife and my anniversary dinner. We were placed outside to wait for a table. It was a chilly evening, about 55 degrees. We were initially told it wouldn't be but a 10 to 20 minute wait. We purchased $29 worth of drinks during our more than 30 minute wait. When we were finally seated we were then told that the dish we had specifically gone there for, not a special but a regular menu item, was sold out. When we were first placed outside we were brought menus. That would have been the perfect time to let us know what was sold out not after we had waited 40 minutes in the cold. When I first walked into the Garrison House, I was amazed by the layout. It has a modern yet distinctly rural atmosphere, a celebration of being located in the Ontarien wine country. The size of the establishment is rather small, but if I were to ever own a restaurant, I would want something that sized. We were kindly greeted by who I assumed was the general manager/owner of the eatery and shown to our seats. I looked at the menu, and I was delighted that the list of options was rather small. "Finally," I thought to myself, "I'm going to have a great dining experience in Ontario" Our server was very kind (though I cannot remember her name), and brought us our drinks. I had an Irish Red Ale, and it was a solid draught beer. After receiving our drinks, we ordered our mains. My girlfriend, her mother, and her father all got the burger, done medium. I wanted to go against the grain, and I decided to get the halibut and stewed beans they were serving that evening. We waited about 30-40 minutes to receive our meal. The server tend to our needs during this time, which was very much appreciated. Finally, about 5 minutes before we are served, I smell a familiar scent wafting from the open kitchen. It's my halibut! I ready myself, and my mouth starts salivating. I am happy to see our plates be delivered to our table. With anticipation, I taste the stewed beans. I'm disappointed with how salty the beans are, but I do not fret, because if the fish is well done (not THAT kind of well done, mind you), I will be a happy man. The first bite of halibut is nice I would have personally like the fish to have been a bit more seasoned, but with the salty beans, I can live with the combo. The next bite is not quite as good, the flesh seems to be undercooked (closer to rare than a medium that I am used to), and so I cut the piece of Pisces on have to investigate further. The fish is plain raw. I'm disappointed, but in hindsight I'm makes sense, as I started smelling my dish being cooked minutes before it was brought to my table. Maybe the cook forgot to fire it on time, and trying to get the food out in a timely fashion, sent out the filet without taking its temperature. We're on a time crunch, having to drive back to the Toronto airport to catch our ride back East, so I inform our server of the fish situation and get the soup instead. The server is kind enough to take the halibut off our bill, and gives me a bowl of parsnip pottage on the house. The soup has a very buttery taste, which I find enjoyable, but the parsnip is not as pronounced as I would have liked. Once again, there is an overwhelming saltiness coming from my dish. I inform our server so that she can tell the kitchen. If it were not for our server, I would have a much lower opinion of this restaurant. My girlfriend and her family enjoyed the food, but I was left with a sour (er, salty) taste in my mouth. I know cooks can have a higher tolerance to salt because of how prevalent smoking is, but whoever seasoned both the beans and the soup should take a break from cigarettes in order to recalibrate their tastebuds. There should also be more use of thermometers in the kitchen. I can understand undercooked fish being served when it's busy or a large group of people all order halibut, but as I stated earlier, it's a fairly small restaurant, and it was nowhere near busy. read more

The Garrison House is arguably the best casual dining spot in Niagara on the Lake. Unpretentious and informal, yet classy. While it gets crowded on busy weekend and summer days, you might snag a table without a reservation here. Walk-ins are welcome. While lots of places in touristy NOTL serve a Shepherd's Pie, a burger, and fish & chips, the best versions are most often found here. Additionally, Garrison serves up fresh Thai and root vegetable curries, salads, and other fresh options that are simply delicious. Garrison has a bar as well. They mix cocktails as well as serve local/regional beers and wines. Service is attentive. Located across a popular winery, and along a small plaza with Shoppers Drug Mart, this place did not disappoint. From the outside it didn't look impressive, but once you walked in, it didn't feel like a tavern. With an open kitchen and a rustic feel, it was welcoming on a cool night. They didn't have many tables for 2, so we sat surrounded by other customers. The waitress was friendly and knew how to please her customers. My partner had the burger and cream of mushroom soup. The soup was lukewarm so definitely not to my liking. She took it back and I was surprised within minutes we got a HOT soup placed in front of us. The taste and texture was different for a hot soup. We both enjoyed it to the last bit!! He said that the burger was cooked well but it could be bigger in size. I ordered chicken schnitzel with potatoes (which were not hot) and red cabbage slaw that was delicious!! It was cooked and the flavour was wonderful. I could eat more of that!! I was in Niagara for a day trip and was browsing where to eat. While searching Yelp, this was the first result to show up on the list so we decided to give it a try. If you're searching on Google Maps, please do search "The Garrison House" and not "Garrison House". We made this mistake and brought us to a residential area. We arrived at the location at around 4pm and were starving from a morning of shopping. They had patio as well as indoor seating. We were offered the indoor option as outdoor patio was full. Because we were so hungry, we decided to go for indoor seating. The restaurant was nicely spaced out with hand sanitizer right by the entrance. There's also arrow markings on the floor so patrons know to follow them out. The hostess also addressed to follow the arrows and have our masks on when we leave from the table. They outlined on their menu each party must order a minimum of $20.00 worth of food/drinks. This wasn't difficult since a burger is already $19.00. Between the 3 of us, we ordered a salad with chicken and 2 medium rare burgers. We waited for about half an hour before we were presented with our food. At that point, we were very hungry. Although the burger was cooked a little more than medium rare, we just ate it anyways. Aside from being a little overcooked, the burger was pretty good. The fries were fresh cut and was very delicious. We noticed on the menu, there was a peach pie which we were curious about and wanted to order after our main course. Unfortunately, it was sold out by the time we were ready to order. We did order the peach icecream and that was the highlight of our entire meal! We read raving reviews and tried to dine here on THREE separate occasions before finally getting a table this weekend (we can be persistent about food). Maybe the build-up set too high of an expectation, the experience turned out to be good, but not amazing. I liked their selection of draft beers and the burger was as good as promised (would return for this). The manager (?) explained they make the patties fresh on site out of quality cuts and I could taste the difference. We came to this place after finding it on Yelp. The ambiance and food is pretty good. We ordered the curry soup (chef's daily special) and it was tasted pretty good. I was a bit surprised. For entrees we had the Garrison Burger and the Silversmith Black Lager Lam Sheppard's Pie (that was a mouthful). My burger came with a side salad and if you are a grown man like me then it is actually not enough food unless you go for the fries. The Sheppard's pie was delicious. This is one entree I would recommend people to try. If you are into beer, try the Brimstone (blond ale). I enjoyed that one. read more

Great find after a long day of driving and all the touristy things in Niagara Falls. We were staying in Niagara on the Lake so we decided to check this place out. Ordered the panko fried calamari which was perfectly seasoned and served with a delicious sauce - not the usual breaded and deep fried version you typically encounter, this was subtle and delicious. Portion is small though so if you're expecting what I've described above (which usually comes in a heaping portion) this ain't it. If you're sharing with the table, order two. I had the cottage pie which was quite delicious and hearty, The fried chicken was juicy - it had been brined to perfection and the meat itself was very flavorful. I've been twice to the GH for a burger since moving to NOTL and will go back again ... and again. They use Cumbrae Butcher shop for the meat and it shows in the flavour and quality of the burger. They cook it perfectly. I didn't care for the horseradish mayo on the first burger, but the second one without that sauce was the best hamburger that I've had at a restaurant in a long time. We enjoyed dinner at The Garrison House on our first day in Niagara-on-the-lake. Food, atmosphere and service were all excellent. We walked in hungry & not quite oriented to the area just yet. Our server was very friendly and glad to write down a few places to check out during our trip. The ambiance was casual and clean. I enjoyed the wood and chalkboard details against the stark white walls. I also loved that The Garrison House serves local (NOTL) wines and beers. I had an unoaked Chardonnay & my husband tried a beer from the local Oast brewery. The menu was very simple and included several interesting options. My husband had the Garrison Burger which we found to be juicy and flavorful without being overly greasy. I had the BLT salad, which was basically a wedge salad with house made ranch and bacon crumbles. I added the House fish, which happened to be salmon. It was all very delicious and not too heavy.
