Came here on one of those pseudo dates me and my husband try and have every once in a while, you know to re-kindle the flame. It worked. It was a fancy breakfast date (milk and cereal can get boring). We were warmly greeted and because it is a small world after all, we saw the girl that works at our local pub working there! We felt right at home. Very clean feel and the brushed up wood reminds of a cottage in the woods, specially with the cold of the morning. I was hesitating between the full and proper english breakfast (£8.95) or the scotch pancakes with maple syrup and fruit conserve (£7.25) I went for the latter. No regrets, the pancakes were fluffy and buttery; the fruit conserve made it tastier. Top it up with one of their fresh juice combination try an apple, mint and pineapple combination (£4.20). To almost pay twelve pounds for breakfast, is a bit much, but consider this: it is a michelin recommended pub, greeted and treated warmly and you won't eat anything for the rest of the day. Fully booked on a Saturday at lunch time, the Garrison accommodated me and my companion at the bar. This pleased me, especially after I saw the FT Weekend sitting right in front of me as I perched myself atop a barstool. I'm the kind of person who actually quite enjoys dining at a bar, since this usually means you get great service. Operative word: usually. Throughout my visit, the bar staff was aloof and lacking proper restaurant/bartending knowledge. Someone beside me ordered a flat white, and a black americano arrived with milk. I am not joking. My companion and I were left alone for lengthy periods of time. The honey macademia nuts I ordered never arrived despite appearing on the bill. And we only received the bill and paid for our lunch after flagging the bar staff down to ask for it and looking at anyone and everyone with longing desperation of a chip and PIN machine. The food - while quite tasty and innovative - came in woefully small portions, at woefully high price points. The complimentary thick-sliced brown bread accompanied by soft butter? Well, it was the Garrison's saving grace. read more

On our last day in London, we came here for breakfast on a Monday morning. It was crowded with a business crew but we were still seated (which was next to a bathroom area that produced a pungent odor). When we sat, we were given menus and ordered coffee- at that point everything was off to a great start. When we placed our order, there were a few things we ordered that were no longer available (it was 8:35 AM), settling for second options, between the table we ordered two Egg & Bacon sandwiches, English breakfast and Eggs Benedict. Seeing majority of the restaurant had been served, we assumed it would be relatively normal service. Then we didn't see our waiter or food for a solid 35-40 minutes but we kept seeing staff go downstairs, grab one ingredient and then head to the kitchen (we realized these were our breakfast ingredients). During this time, we felt as though our waiter was purposefully avoiding eye contact- we had to ask for water twice and then once the food arrived it was good but nothing special and we waited for someone to come back around to ask for the check. Another forgettable London gastropub, I'm afraid. Artichoke risotto, beet carpaccio - a bit too desperate to be original, if you ask me. The lamb burger could've been decent had it not been so soggy, the patty collapsing at first touch. The artichoke risotto was also much too wet, having the texture of rice porridge. Extremely nice restaurant / gastropub, with a nice ambience, very friendly staff, well-kept kitchen (we can see the guys cooking while dancing :-), The food is really great, with quite large portions of delicate dishes. The venison is cooked perfectly, risotto is exactly what you'd get in Italy, and the cod is really rich of flavours. As for the desserts, the crumble is, for once, not just some little piece of tasters, but a great plate of a delicious piece of art. Brownies and hot fudge are over-the-top in terms of taste and texture. Last but not least, very fancy toilets with sinks on top of urinals so you can save some time down there ! The Garrison - oh, I liked you! A good friend took me for Sunday lunch - it took us a couple stops and a few mulled wines before enough time passed to finally sit down at the Garrison (3PM). Between the wonderful lunch time aromas and knickknack crap everywhere, I found it to be somewhat reminiscent of Sunday lunch at my grandmothers - just warm and inviting. I had my first Sunday roast - it was wonderful. I added a little English mustard on the side, making the meal near perfect for me. Delightful and delectable smells wafting from their windows & a good looking local neighbourhood gastropub...BUT... I've been to the Garrison before, a long time before! Its good to know that the interior hasn't changed much (sometimes too much change is a bad thing) cos its pretty perfect the way it is. Think of Kath Kidston meets the Stepford wives' country manor clubhouse. Its cutesy, country manor style decor, with one-off pieces here and there. I especially love the downstairs area for its warm table layout, with comfy mocha brown sofa lounges, original overhead screen projection-cum-cinema concept (screenings every Sunday evening) and a feature wall of illuminated glass bottles of various shapes and sizes. We were there on a lazy Sunday afternoon, nursing a not-quite-a-hangover from the previous nights' celebrations (my bday drinks) but certainly in need of good coffee and fine grub. With the former - it was a great macchiato, beautifully presented with the rich dark layer of espresso at the bottom, the middle layer being a warm hot chocolate looking melding of the espresso and hint of frothed milk, topped with a small dollop of foamy milk. Unfortunately, I can't pay too many compliments to the meal. Whilst the roast loin of pork that I ordered from the Sunday roast menu was reasonably apportioned for one, my friends' orders came out looking more of an entree sized dish for a mains price tag. Nonetheless, the food itself was absolutely delicious, my only gripe is that the pork was perhaps a little too overcooked in the middle (therefore rendering it slightly dry) and they could've been a little more generous with the side dishes (I recounted 2 pieces of everything, including 2 very lonely looking broccoli). Their roast potatoes were faultless however - crunchy thick coating but fluffy and powdery inside! Opinions about dessert was somewhat divided amongst the table - I thought the crumble on our pear and blackberry crumble with salted caramel ice cream, was a little too hard and too buttery that it risked overcoming the subtle flavours of the pear and blackberry filling. The ice cream was fantastic however. Portion size wise, we shared one dessert between 3 and there was more than enough to go round the table. Overall, I think the Garrison is a good spot to take your date out and impress him/her with both the daily specials menu, the relatively modest wine and cocktail list and ofcourse, the dessert to share! We got here at 1pm just in time for Sunday roast and we noticed that every table already had customers or a reserved sign. Nonetheless, there was room for us at several tables if we thought that we could leave by 2pm which was fine for us. We were seated at a great raised booth with comfy light blue seats and a "not-too-big" table. It was like our own fortress! If the food matched the decor, I would have given this a 5 star rating. The service was friendly and we soon had some complimentary breads and our drinks had arrived. You can see into the kitchen which is the first time for me when at a Sunday roast lunch. We saw our lunches were ready to be brought over - they looked great! We both ordered the pork belly with a yorkshire (it costs extra, but you really have to have a yorkshire when eating Sunday roast). The letdown was that the crackling had no crunch at all! That's pretty important to me. Still, at least it wasn't chewy leather. The meat itself was tender and delicious. The potatoes were fine and the vegetables were better than average. Most places only serve you one small parsnip; here you get several. The yorkshire tasted average. Overall cost was just under 50 pounds (we had a drink each too), which is above average price. read more

I am SO happy I finally tried this place. I'll give it five stars for food, and four stars for being way too busy on a Sunday night so we had to sit at the bar. We ordered a few glasses of wine and the special cider they were making, of course delicious. Appetizer started with the tomato and pepper soup as well as the warm goat cheese salad. Both delicious and super fresh tasting. Main--Roast pheasant with pancetta. I've never had pheasant before, but i adored this dish. it was succulent, with a good salty hearty flavor of the pancetta. The bar servers were super sweet as they felt bad for us eating in a crowded area but all in all, I would be happy to come back. This goes WAY beyond my expectations for a gastropub (read my last review on a gastropub :)), I was almost tempted to keep this info to myself but its too good not to check out! There are some really spot on things about the Garrison. The down to earth tables and decor give the place a really comfy, homey feel. The waitstaff are friendly and attentive and I really enjoyed the atmosphere - very buzzy and fun. The downfall was the food. We went as a large group. I ordered mackerel with lentils and orange because it sounded like a potentially interested started. It was bland and boring. The mackerel was overcooked and the lentils on the mushy side. The flavours blended into one another and the two measly slices of orange really did nothing to liven it up. As a main, I had the rabbit on pearl barley. The rabbit fell off the bone but it wasn't memorable otherwise. My partner had a lovely goats cheese salad and he liked his risotto but it came with old rocket which didn't look very nice on the plate. I felt like I could have made everything at home. The presentation also needed quite a bit of work. I don't need over the top, stacked food or anything but quite a few of dishes were monotone in colour. Brown lentils, brown fried fish with orange slices. Orange rabbit leg on orange pearl barley. I had a nice time with friends but definitely won't be going back for the food. read more

Visited with a friend on a sunny afternoon- what a great place! Cozy decor, great natural light and fantastic staff and service. I tried the red onion tart, served with a aft boiled egg and mushroom ragu- it was delightful, light and flavourful. My friend and I shared some rose, a great addition for a lazy afternoon lunch. The Garrison may well be a victim of its own success. It was absolutely full to capacity on a Monday night because it does have great food. I had the kedgeree which was very very slightly too liquidy with just a smidgin too much curry, but overall quite delicious. I also had the gingerbread with ginger ice cream that was perfectly nice. So why the gripe? Well it has tried to pack rather a lot of tables and chairs in, and it has gone from eclectic to claustrophobic. It was quite difficult to get the attention of anyone in order to get more tap water, but they were surprisingly persistent with the dessert menus. I also dislike the time limit on their tables - especially as we were dining with our friend who has supported them for years and years. It feels like it's become a place that simply tries to turn over as many customers as physically possible in a night. I do realise that's how money is made in the restaurant biz, but most places tend to be a little more subtle about it. So, I'm not sure I'm going back, and my friend who was been patronising them for years is also a little iffy on the whole idea. read more

I bloody love this place. An absolutely fantastic gastropub with a top-class menu and superb interior decor. It's got a bit of a wow-factor when you walk in, really interesting bits and pieces on the walls etc. We were on a working lunch, so rather sadly, I didn't sample the ales, but my grey mullet was out of this world - literally one of the nicest lunches I've had in ages. We sat on a long tall 'bar' table arrangement, which was actually surprisingly comfy. There's an old cinema downstairs, which they rent out during the day - also a great space. Keep it up! read more

A man unknown to me recommended my boyfriend take me here after said boyfriend had forgotten to meet me at the train station. I was instructed to meet said boyfriend at London Bridge before any more damage could be done. I can see why the unknown man recommended this place as somewhere to make up to a mildly angry girlfriend. It's beautiful inside - a little rustic Frenchy feel to it, lovely atmos and great looking food. I didn't eat - just put away a super glass of (expensive, apology) wine and a smidge of prosecco. A gastro pub with an old pub feel. A bit pretentious and it's dark inside. This place has left a lasting impression on me, there's something about it that I loved. As soon as you walk in, a welcoming and homely atmosphere greets you. Fantastic decor, lovely chairs and tables all different designs, light wooden floor and walls, big lampshades, and overall just a lovely cosy atmosphere. It almost feels like a cross between someone's living room and a restaurant. The day we were here it was a beautiful sunny day so the light outside really complimented the colours inside adding to the cool vibe. The lunch we had here was great, lovely menu with lots of choice, and I'd love to come back to sample the Sunday lunch. It's a great place to hang out on a Sunday afternoon reading the paper and I'll definitely be coming back. The cinema room downstairs is perfect to hire if you need a room to spend a day for any reason, great for companies to use who want something different. read more

The elegantly batty ballerina of Bermondsey Street, the Garrison requires the right treatment. If you don't book in advance, you'll be summarily rebuffed. It's a gorgeous place to eat, very atmospheric and done in that Louis XIV carboot sale style that you'll either love (me, hurray!) or find a bit boho desperate. Let me get this out of the way first; I actually had a head-spinning moment while eating here when I thought I'd somehow transported to Brooklyn, NY. Not in a good way though, but in a 'look-at-all-the-rediculous-hipsters' way. Skinny jeans and ironic mustaches everywhere! For a disorienting moment I was actually in Carroll Gardens! With that said, the garrison was a great place for dinner. Our waitress was super friendly and patient, the food was fantastic and the atmosphere lively without being oppressive. I have mixed feelings about this place. It has a lovely, eclectic, slightly quirky interior, great service and a really superb breakfast menu (everything from fruit or pastries to a full cooked English). However, I find the dinner menu quite pretentious and a too pricey. Good food, admittedly, but it certainly won't make my list for favourites. It doesn't feel much like a pub to me. Most Gastropubs at least feel like a pub underneath the fancy food. If you want a good pub, go to the Woolpack opposite, but stay here for a great breakfast or a more special meal. read more

Tasty dinner menu and helpful waiting staff, the only problem I have ever had here is trying to get a table. But you can tell a great restaurant when demand is more than they can possibly supply. Worth the effort though. And the downstairs cinema room is lovely, and you can hire it for private parties for a song! We even considered starting a movie club just so we could all go there once a month and lounge around enjoying their food and drink and watching a DVD. Check it out if you can. read more

This place passed the tough restaurant test known as impressing my mother, who knows what she likes and doesn't like anything too fancy, exotic or expensive in a place that isn't too loud or colourful but still has atmosphere. So when she clears her plate and declares her meal absolutely delicious, you know they've hit on something. The menu makes the simple things too impressive and the impressive dishes look simple. My mother's lamb with green beens was "cooked to perfection", my girlfriend's sea bass was polished off to happy noises and my duck breast with creamy leeks was tender and juicy. The wine list is very decent and praline ice cream to finish was deliciously creamy. This is no one off - last time at The Garrison the food was also delicious. It's very cosy and easy to while away the time with a glass or two, plus there's Adnan's for those who like their ale. Dates, long-term partners and parents will all be impressed with this place. Perhaps it could do with being a pound or two cheaper, but when the food is this good and the service this friendly, these are minor quibbles. Booking is essential though. read more

Loved this place! When we were traveling to London last month, we were told that while the food is good, pubs aren't always the place to find it. The Garrison proved that rule completely wrong! The vibe and atmosphere was unique and modern, the service extremely friendly and helpful, and you could really sense their dedication to unique and rustic food choices. If you want to get a good idea of the vibe of the place, their website is awesome and very representative of the pub itself. Not just the best food I've had at a pub, one of the best meals I've had anywhere! And, I hear they do movie night every now and again too! read more

The place was packed though it still wasn't dinnertime and my companions and I were given a time slot for dinner since we didn't have a reservation. A first look at the menu indicated that The Garrison isn't cheap but a second look inside convinced me to give this upscale pub a try. I was really impressed by the mix of pub, restaurant and living room atmosphere that in total looked like a sophisticated old school dollhouse. Since The Garrison is Michelin recommended I was even more curious about the food. Next to the menu it offers daily changing dishes. Our little group tried the fish, chicken, and tartar (everything around £12-18) and I personally have to say that it was tasteful but didn't put my socks off like the pizza at Pizza East or the burger at The Dean Swift. Maybe my expectations were too high or the pints were adulterating my taste. Overall I liked the atmosphere and interior, the food as well, though I expected more, and would return next time I am in London. read more

I'm a proper local to this area. I was there long before The Gaz opened and let it be known that this place helped change the face of the area. That was four or five years ago and whilst the area has spiralled out of control, very little has changed at this restaurant. Food is still rockin, best guinness around, they know how to pour a proper Havana 7 and the service is top notch. There are not many places in London that could incetivise you more to do a late lunch, then drink right through dinner service and beyond...just do it pumpkin, do it, do it. read more

We came here on a visit to London with some locals who recommended the traditional Sunday roast. It was a great atmosphere, and the food was very much as described - traditional. This is a comfort-based type of place and you leave full and satisfied. All 6 of us had one of the featured roasts, so we did not have a lot of variety, but what we did partake in was great. After my second trip to The Garrison on my second trip to London this place will be a regular visit every time I come. My first visit I did not have a reservation but the kind hostess informed us she could squeeze us in for 'a quick 2 courses'! This place is filled with quaint, carefully chosen but pieced together tables and chairs. While it's meant to look shanty, someone clearly took a lot of time to create a bohemian atmosphere. Overall it's quite charming. The menu changes rather frequently but I can honestly say I haven't tried anything that I haven't loved. The wines are spot on and go well with the food. The pork belly is not to be missed and seems to be a regular on the menu- melt in your mouth. On this last visit we ordered the rabbit terrine, and the chestnut parcel and both were delicious. The rabbit terrine was more rustic in style and laced with apricots, served with a delicious ale chutney that had a nice balance of acidity and sweetness to cut the fattiness of the terrine. The chestnut parcel was roasted chestnut with caramelized leeks wrapped in a flaky fillo-esque pastry, served with a red pepper coulis. Totally decadently wonderful. The Garrison in short is charming, authentic, and a wonderful culinary experience. If anyone has any hesitation about the substance and potential of British cuisine, visit The Garrison. read more

Was there last night for the first time since moving to London from Seattle. I live right down the street and this highly acclaimed spot has eluded my grip for weeks. Finally, had some friends from the states in town and I decided to go. It was good! The soups were delightful as was the bread to start. Main dish was Spatchcock chicken with a side of potatoes and grilled tomatoes. Dessert was light and flavorful. Definitely a must try. It is a little on the £££ side... be ready to part with £30 a person for a full on meal. Will definitely try other things there soon. Impetus to get more friends from Seattle to join me. read more
