Their website touts: "The Gas Lantern Drinking Company is a casual bar in Boise providing customers with an assortment of distinctive beers as well as wine." Which, seems to me, to be overlooking their best asset--their magnificent mixology. From smoked cocktails to the more fruity, The Gas Lantern boasts a delicious cocktail menu that is as delicious as it is diverse. Want something other than one of their specialty cocktails? I'm certain their bartenders could accommodate. I've been here on a couple of occasions and have been delighted each time. The interior perfectly suits the name of their establishment and is both comfortable and cozy as well as roomy (plenty of room and elbow space for your group). I love a good smoked cocktail. I love the flavor but also love watching the entire swirling smoky cocktail as it's being created. To me, great cocktails are always delightful, but made slightly more so when their creation is a bit of a show. The service is kind and efficient, their prices are about what you'd expect to pay for specialty cocktails made with quality ingredients, and they have a pool table. Really, what's not to love? Get to it!

    Midnight in Manhattan ($12)

I came here on a Saturday night at around 9:30pm and I was surprised to see that it wasn't as busy as I would've expected, but I wasn't complaining! It's a cool vibe when you walk in and there is a pool table if you want some entertainment. My first drink was the smoke & thyme ($12) which despite its name does not have thyme in the drink. After they make the drink they put smoke in it and cover it up when they serve it so it has that smokey presentation when you lift the lid. The drink itself reminds me of a whiskey sour without the egg white but smoked instead, so if you're into whiskey sours you'll love this drink. My second drink was the midnight in manhattan ($12) which is a riff off of a Manhattan and is boozy but slightly sweet and bitter from the averna. The cool thing was that this drink was served in a completely black cocktail glass which just added to the sleekness of the drink. I want to give a shoutout to my bartender Randy (and the other bartender but I never got her name). They were both amazing and we got to chat about road trips and sharing cocktail recipes!

Will is awesome he set me up with a flight of whiskey they have a great selection to choose from. Also had an orange ave wit which was delicious. The prices are fair in comparison to other places Gas Lantern is the way to go. Would recommend.

I will definitely go back and update my review when I have had more than one drink and my memory isn't so impaired. This review is based off of one beer around 11:00 PM with a group of my friends. It was crowded, which is a great sign! We had a bit of a pickle squeezing into one tiny booth, but it was just more reason to love on each other. We also had decent service for how busy it was! Way to go staff! I have no idea what I ordered, but it was definitely a beer. Probably a Lager. I also can't remember what anyone else ordered. Haha, this is my best, most detailed review ever. :) I do remember the actual gas lanterns hanging around and that was super cool. The rest of the decor was unique and special.

Very quite on a Wednesday evening. Tried the mid-tier whisky flight all picked be the bartender! Fantastic selection! The place has a great vibe. Music was relaxing, but up beat. Lots of windows to see the passerby's!

10th reviewer of The Gas Lantern Drinking Company in Downtown Boise, on the corner of Capital and Fulton. This is my 399th Yelp review. After a Yelp event at the Ballet Idaho, my yelpies Yulia Chanda, and I decided to go out for drinks and chit-chat. People at the event were talking about the lantern and since I've never been I thought it would be fun. With the three friends in agreement, we went and had drinks and some snacks. The drinks were top of the line. They have a drink menu and the drinks are funky and fun. The smoked my drink, per my request, but I didn't taste a difference in it. We also ordered some apps-- two fries and a pretzel. My pretzel was hard and not impressive, but the pork belly fries were pretty good.

$12 burger + fries. Substitute the fries for a side soup or salad for $2 more.

Ever since I came across photos of Gas Lantern on their Facebook page I KNEW I had to check them out! They're located a few blocks from the Capitol building in downtown Boise, making this the perfect meet up spot. Right away, we noticed there were a variety of people in here at 8 p.m. on a Tuesday...always a great sign! The place is beautifully appointed (very Joss & Main) and has ample seating and some fun additions like a pool table which was an excellent touch! In terms of drinks, their cocktail menu only features a handful of items ranging between $8-12. They do make well drinks and they serve beer on tap as well but none of those prices were included in the menu. I ordered a drink called Afternoon and my boyfriend tried the only other $8 drink option. Both of the drinks we tried tasted strong. When I go to a place that focuses on cocktails, I've never had to worry about coughing after taking a sip of a mix drink, but here we are. The drinks are beautiful but very small. Furthermore, on top of being miniature, my boyfriends drink was completely filled with ice. It's a fancy place, smaller portions are to be expected, but we still weren't expecting them to be that small. For the price and the buzz it's a 3/5. They also serve food from a food truck but as good as it looks, it's not worth it. The fries worn't fried (possibly baked?), the poutine had a flour tase, and the burgers are incredibly small. We 100% could have had an off-night experience because people have been raving about the food, but nothing stood out as something I'd order again. If you're down for a night out, this place seems like a great spot to pre-party during happy hour. It's only a few blocks from the Grove Plaza, there's ample street parking, and they have drink discounts from 4-6 pm. It didn't end up standing out to me with service, drinks or food, but it's definitely worth stopping by at least once. I strongly feel like we just picked a bad night when service was iffy, drinks were prepared without much attention, and the food truck was starting to slow down for the night (they stop serving at 9 pm fyi). I look forward to trying them again at happy hour sometime to see how the experiences compare.

I enjoyed this place a great deal. A large immense extreme great substantial deal. Smoked liquors. Yes. Ample areas to talk, mingle, interact, yes. Epic back grounds for selfies, instagrams, and snaps. Oh- and the most fantastical beverages. It has it all. Please come. Please support. Please keep this place in business. It's all I ask.

Ohhhh I like this place!!! Upscale drink list with awesome mixologists that will blow your mind! The atmosphere is bad ass....what a great place to have a prefunk or a post dinner drink!!!! They only serve drinks, but there is a food truck that hangs around. Another cool thing about this location, it shares a hall with Long Drop Cidery and White Dog Brewing....so hit up all three locations...BRILLIANT!!! Come have a drink here...you won't regret it!! Oh and did I mention tons of parking??? That's right no garages baby, just park and walk in....at a downtown location, YOU CANT BEAT THAT!

    Happy Hour Menu

While on a road trip stop in Boise we discovered this gem of a cocktail bar. I can confidently say that this is my favorite stop of the trip. (We covered 4 states!) We rolled into the Gas Lantern at 11pm on a Sunday night. We were excited to find a place that was still open, and even more excited because the bartender Hunter, was genuinely happy to have us. As soon as we sit down he informs us that it's happy hour and hands us the happy hour menu. Craft cocktails for $5 or $6. We had a couple rounds before they closed and promised that we would return the following day. On Monday we returned and were happy to see that things were just as we expected. Our bartender Aidan whipped up some great drinks and provided an excellent experience as well. I truly feel like we've discovered a hidden gem in Boise. If you are looking for a welcoming place to drink great cocktails, this is your place. Everyone that served us seemed excited to be working here and passionate about cocktails. Oh ya did I mention that they have insane happy hour prices?

I had the sestero 29, quite good!

I was in town for business, and I had a local friend tell me, "you gotta go in here. You can tell…read morethe bartender what you like flavor wise, and they will make you something even better than you can imagine." And that, my friends, is exactly what happened. I walked in, not sure what to get. The bartender asked me what flavors I like. She went away and made me this epic cocktail. She told me all the things she added, and it was clear, these bartenders are the real deal. They know their stuff. I drank my delightful cocktail way too fast. But it was so damn good. The vibe is fun. They bartenders interact with everyone and do all kinds of cool things with cool ingredients and tell you about it all. Perfect spot for a loungey date night, or a meet up with a friend. There is no food. But plenty of spots on 8th in walking distance. This is probably one of the best cocktail bars I've ever been to. ... and I've been to a lot. :)

A small window in the door opened and we had to provide a password to gain entry. (Initially our large group had to reserve 3 time slots and we would be seated separately.) I was in the first group. We were let into a small area with floor to ceiling bookcases. Of course there was a book that once pulled, opened a secret door to the bar within. The ambiance was dim lighting and groups of comfortable seating areas. The waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable about the drinks on the menu. I started with a mocktail that could be made vegan by omitting the egg white. Beautifully presented with a flower design. It was sweet and it was tart. The second drink I got was a cocktail that was smooth with a perfect amount of sweet. My friends got cocktails in their unique glasses. When our next group came through, they were led into a room. After a while, one friend came out to say hello to us. The waiter noticed that we knew each other and told my group to follow him. The room was dimly lit and was furnished with comfortable armchairs and couches. Our third group was able to join us in the room and we were able to mingle seated or standing. The different drinks that were ordered were so cool. A smoky bubble was set on top of a cone shaped glass that resembled an ice cream cone. I had a couple of friends that ordered gin drinks and they were served in a bathtub complete with rubber ducky! This was such a fun and special way to celebrate a friend's birthday! The service was superb!

I've been to several speakeasies around the USA and Gatsby should be the standard of what a…read morespeakeasy should be. No really! Imagine yourself walking through the 8th St promenade in downtown Boise. It's hustling and bustling with people and restaurants that are packed. Then, out of the corner of your eye, you see an alley. It's kinda dark, maybe a little unsettling at first. You see a steel door with a small panel at the top of the door. No door handles but a green lit old stagecoach light, a small wooden sign hanging g just beyond the door with a key on it. Hmmm, strange. In faded sharpie letters it says Knock knock on the metal door, so you knock twice. The panel on the door slides open and they ask for the password. Whoa!!!! Luckily you called ahead to make reservations so they whispered it to you. You give the password and door opens to a tiny little library with a couple of shelves full of books. The hosts welcomes you and you stare at the bookshelf knowing it isn't just a bookshelf but a door. You try pulling on different books guessing which is the right one but after a minute the hostess shows you and you enter a beautiful brick walled 1920s decorated room with seats and dim lights and no windows whatsoever. The artwork is prohibition-era themed. Heck, there's even a stack of wooden barrels that supposedly hold spirits. That is exactly the speakeasy experience you are looking for. We were seated in the boiler room, a private area which had beautiful wooden lockers with glass doors all lit up and full of booze. Books line the wall and there is an old fireplace covered with candles that have melted wax all over the mantle. In the corner is a poker table. Really the perfect vibe for a speakeasy. Glance at the menu and notice their tang of cheaper to very rare and unique spirits, some costing hundreds of dollars for a shot. Whisky, vodka, rum, gin, scotch, bourbon, you name it. But also check out their cocktails. They can even make mocktails if you don't want alcohol. Not only are the drinks unique but so is their presentation. The glades used I've never seen. Some drinks have a printed pattern on them, others come with dry ice that quickly evaporates or a cool smoked filled bubble. The whole experience was just amazing. This is a do not miss opportunity if you like drinks and cool, unique experiences. They even have another room in the back called the Garrison Room which looks like a mineshaft. I just love the thought put into this place. And when you are done, you exit through a nondescript door and exits to a patio area of another restaurant and back out to the promenade. Just a wow experience! So glad I did it.
