I visited the Gelb center recently for my TMJ. The office was nice and clean, and the staff was nice and respectful. I really appreciated the steps they took to ensure people's health during covid. As far as technology and diagnostics, I would say A+. I had a scan of my skull done and after Dr. Gelb was able to map out what a treatment plan would be for me. They give you a copy of the scan as well so you can provide to your regular doctor or future doctors. The appliances looked really top quality, I was excited to potentially own a new night and day guard that Dr. Gelb makes, they look really nice (in comparison to the one I received from my regular dentist/orthodontist). The downside is that the mouth guard was pricey in the end and for myself it would have come out of pocket- so I wasn't able to get it. Consensus: Dr. Gelb is super knowledgeable, has good bedside manner, and the technology in his office is top notch. Unfortunately given that he's out of my insurance network, and four dollar signs level pricey- I will need to explore other options for my TMJ. But if I ever hit bank in the future I would definitely come back. read more

The medical staff at Gelb Center were very nice and friendly. The doctor was friendly on my first visit. However as I visited him more, he started losing interest and gets annoyed when he hears the mouth piece he made for me isn't working. I felt helpless because the dentist is unapproachable and beneath his breath told me while I was on the chair that I should be grateful. Also at that time , he was yelling at his female Asian dental staff who was assisting him together with a white male staff. He was giving her instructions on a condescending tone too but not to the white male staff. This dentist has a god complex like the fellow yelpers has mentioned. I decided not to go back to him even though I spent thousands of money because didn't trust him anymore. I am glad I backed out before the change in my bite becomes permanent as I found out from other doctors that it was a terrible decision and not the right option for me. I went to too many "specialists" for my sleep apnea before finding Gelb Center. I would be very, very wary of this place. They were very easy to schedule, and their staff is very pleasant and polite. However, the whole vibe I got from the center was of a place that charges exorbitant rates for one-size-fits-all treatment that may or may not work. I didn't move forward with their treatment plan for TMJ - after they tried to get me to pay $3500 per retainer (one for night, one for day) - not covered by insurance - that was about all I needed to hear. They quoted me one price for the consultation, then charged me a different (higher) amount. When I called to complain, they said they would send a check for the difference, but never did. read more

Dr Gelb is the best! I first went to him 6 months ago when I was experiencing severe vertigo, disorientation and pain in my jaw. I saw countless doctors that were not able to understand what was happening for over a year. Dr Gelb did extensive diagnostic work ups and got to the root of my issue. I have to agree with the negative reviewers. I saw Dr. Gelb in mid January. First I had extensive 3D photographs taken of my teeth. The he came in to introduce himself and talk to me. He was very easy going and pleasant. He said that the mouth guard I got from my regular dentist wasn't right and suggested I get a top and bottom for night time and a bottom guard for day time. He thought it would take about 4 months for my TMJ to become less painful. We made an appointment for the following month to pick up my guards. When I got there, one of his assistants fitted me with the night time guard but wanted to do more work on the daytime one. I received that one in the mail a couple of weeks later in a plain envelope with no instructions. I figured out how to wear all the guards and had another appointment a month after that. Again, it was an assistant who saw me. He mentioned that my mouth seemed better (?). I said that the guards were hurting the inside of my mouth and he adjusted them. A couple of months later I went in and saw yet another assistant who didn't look at the guards and suggested that I might need Invisaligns. My son had invisaligns in high school and is still wearing them in college. They are just as expensive as the guards that Gelb created for me. The assistant made an appointment for me to see Dr. Gelb a few months later. When I went in, a very nice doctor came to talk to me about invisaligns. I told him I wasn't interested. He was OK with that. When he left the assistant told me that that was my last visit and I should call if I needed anything. I never saw Dr. Gelb after that first visit. I agree that it's clearly a money making racket and I'm sorry I spent the money I did. There is very very little customer service for all the money. Don't waste yours. read more

Nope. Stay far, far away. They sell you a bunch of BS, started by the father, who I saw. All he did was empty my pockets. It's a total exploitation of the pain patient. What this place charges thousands for you can get at the drug store for $30 (called a bite guard). The concept is to open your bite to rest your jaw muscle and stop you from grinding your teeth. Do you really need to spend your life savings to understand that concept? No, you do not. They traffic in false hope. Glad to see the other one star reviews here as well. read more

I was referred to visit The Gelb Center due to issues I've had for a long time (10ish+ years). For years I would have headaches/ migraines/dizziness, experience sleepiness during the day, jaw clicking, and have heartburn. I had no idea that all of this relates to TMJ. I was given a day and night time appliance-which fixed my jaw clicking pain, clenching, and grinding. I can't begin to express how much better I feel since then. My headaches and heartburn have subsided. Prior to wearing the night appliances I would wake up with my heartbeat racing and exhausted. Now I wake up energized and ready for the day! I don't feel sleepy during the day either. Pretty bad experience here- I was encouraged to go through the works and nearly promised a cure for my tmj pain and dystfunction and the oral appliances that I wore for over a year did not help. I still have the same problem I started with and felt the office staff got tired of me calling with questions as soon as they got the chunk of money I paid them. I paid over 5 thousands dollars to be treated by the Gelb center and felt like they lost interest in me when my problem was not easily quickly resolved and or they werent getting more money from me. The person that takes the payments was rude and so are other assistants that work in the office. I was excited at first about finding a "cure" but now I just fell like I got the old run around. DO NOT GO HERE. Terrible dentists with highly questionable ethics. They just want to sell you their extremely expensive one-size-fits-all product for TMJ and headaches, which is a joke. I tried their custom mouthguard for a few months and it hurt my teeth. When I asked if it would move my teeth, the dentist said uncaringly "well your teeth are already not straight." All they care about is their money and covering their asses. I went to see Dr. Gelb because I couldn't open my mouth more than a 1/4 of an inch from how bad my TMJ problem had become, Dr. Gelb did a great job alleviating the pain and readjusting my jaw, my face is even looking better (one side was caving in from the misalignment caused by my grinding)!! I had seen other dentists in the past who had made me mouth guards to help protect my teeth from grinding, but not addressing the underlying problems (arthritis in jaw, for example). Now that I live in California, I trek across the country every few months for him to adjust my appliance. I love Dr. Gelb's energy, efficiency, and ability to make me laugh. His staff is great, very professional and always kind. Lastly, his hygienist is amazing! First time I've had my teeth cleaned without pain from my overly sensitive teeth. He lectures locally, nationally and internationally as he is the "go-to-source". He is a friend who is always willing to give a helping hand no matter what the situation. Though his fees are reasonably priced, it is well worth going to someone who helped write the book on TMD with his father and has a patented oral device that he created and bears his name When I have a challenging case that I cannot handle, I refer them to the last source, Dr Michael Gelb because if he can't help them, no one else can!!! Although Dr Gelb himself is wonderful I cannot say the same thing for his billing staff. I was mistakenly charged $1000 toward an appliance that I cancelled the next day after my appointment. (It was deemed not necessary for the problem I was having by my orthopedist). They never credited it back to my credit card. They told me they would send me a check for the amount. That was 7 weeks ago!!! I have been calling them constantly but they always seem to be in "meetings". I have still not received the refund check and it was their mistake to begin with. While I do agree with a lot of the reviews in terms of cost - my bite plate for $3000 was not covered by insurance (OK this was a few years back and they have gone up like crazy) The bite plate did and does the job it is supposed to. I am a nite grinder and instead of having horrible migraines in the morning - most of the time I wake up pain free. I felt the need to re-post my experience after reading some others. This larceny has been going on for years. I brought my daughter for headaches and he diagnosed TMJ. Sold us a $5K "special" retainer that failed to provide any relief. Claimed she had other issues and tried to send us for expensive blood tests that an endocrinologist would prescribe - but he has no medical training in that area - and to top it off, his office overcharged me by $1,700 and it took 13 months and complaints to the BBB to get it back. Complete fraud! He uses a common con man trick of pushing down on your arm, then inserting his bite plate, pushing down again and stating that your stronger with his bite plate in. He also made me a bite plate that did´nt fit in my mouth (poorly made). He only gives each patient 10 minutes, and if he can´t fix your problem he moves on to the next patient. In my case because he could´nt fix my bite plate in 10 minutes, he got angry and told me I had to wear it, and I was just exaggerating. End result his bite plate pushed my teeth in, and ruined the job my braces had done earlier in my life. I had a perfect smile, now after his bite plate pushed my teeth in, I have a crooked smile. I could never say enough good about DR.Gelb ...he literally saved my life!!..I went to 6 doctors, yes 6! Without any of them knowing why I was having terrible Ear fullness and titus that kept me up through out the night ...I had to actually take an LOA from work because it became so difficult to deal with that I became super depressed and felt so bad for my 8 year old son..it was true torture...the upsetting moment after leaving every doctor with un-answered questions as to why??? I had a brain mri, I had multiple hearing test I was placed on anti inflammatory medicine. NOTHING worked, finally an ENT said maybe TMJ? that's when my mother found DR. Gelb ... the cat scan showed my jaw had basically collapsed on my ear and was blocking a huge part of my air way which caused a struggle to breathe at night....yes it's a costly center but I would spend every dollar because it is worth it ,I spent 400 on a mouth guard from my dentist prior that did absolutely nothing...less than 24 hours after wearing these mouth pieces from DR. Gelb my ear opened up because the mouth piece already began to reconfigure my jaw ..by my next visit all my issues were practically gone those mouth pieces are Gold!!!!! I'm surprised to see such a terrible review for Doctor Gelb here. For me, he's been soooo helpful. The appliance made my TMJ much, much better. And they actually helped my insurance pay for it, and were nice about providing a lower price for me for the stuff my insurance didn't cover. I can honestly say that Dr. Gelb is my hero. I never had TMJ problems before and I was never aware this type of issue existed. I was diagnosed with a form of Rheumatoid Arthritis when I was 13, so when my jaw started hurting, I attributed it to that. However, one day I bit into a peanut butter sandwich and everything changed. My jaw locked in place and I felt the most excruciating pain. At first my jaw would lock once every few weeks, but it quickly increased to locking everyday, multiple times a day. My jaw locked for up to an hour at one point. I was only 15 and it was occurring while I was in school or hanging out with friends. My mom brought me to a total of 8 different doctors who either had no idea what/why this was happening, or prescribed me pain killers that would just knock me out and prevented me from doing my best in class. One doctor even thought I was lying about my jaw and asked if I was just Depressed. He laughed at me. I gave up all hope and then one day my mom discovered the Gelb Center and brought me. I had no expectations and thought I would have to live with such horrible pain for the rest of my life. Dr. Gelb changed everything for me. He was extremely thorough and took photos and x-rays of my jaw, muscles, and teeth. He was so nice and really took the time to listen to all of my complaints. His assistants were also incredibly nice and thorough. He fitted me for two bite plates, one for sleeping, and one for the day time. By leaving them in and following his instructions, I can say with complete honesty, that my jaw has not locked since the day he helped me. It has been almost 5 years since I have been seeing him and I have no more clicking, locking, pain, discomfort, my headaches decreased, and my face is not as round as it used to be. My muscles are no longer tense and I have a clear jaw line. Dr. Gelb even helped me in determining my sleeping problems. He sent me for an overnight sleep test and recommended I go see Dr. Rickert, an ENT. My tonsils needed to be removed and afterwards, my sleep got so much better. My insurance does not cover his visits, which is the only downside, and recently there have been some problems with the staff at the front desk. In the past few months, there was a constant back-and-forth with my insurance, me, and his staff in getting me a new bite plate. Dr. Gelb is doing his best in hiring better staff and giving his patients the care they deserve. He gave me three new bite plates free of charge due to what was happening and is making sure that his staff properly helps. He is the only doctor I will ever trust with my TMJ, and the only doctor who seemed to really care and want to help me. Dr. Gelb made sure to assist me in finding me a Rheumatologist, Physical Therapist, and ENT. By far the best doctor in NYC. I was referred to Dr. Gelb by my dentist after I had an excruciatingly painful 4 week episode of what he thought was TMJ. I went for a consultation. I would never go back. Here's why. 1) He insisted on taking a 360 degree x-ray even though I'd had one within the past year. He said he needed a current one. He also wanted to check my airway, which I told him was unnecessary because I'm under the care of a sleep specialist who is head of the department at a major teaching hospital and was previously head at another one. He took it, diagnosed a slight problem, which my doctor said was not an issue. He wanted to "check my airway" as soon as I came in. I declined. So they said they needed it for my jaw. And used it, in part, to diagnose a non-existent airway problem. 2) He didn't listen carefully to my description of my symptoms. He asked questions about me as a person, but asked no questions about my careful report. 3) I initially agreed to get the two appliances, for $5,000, but decided that I wanted a second opinion. I called early the following morning, cancelled, was told work hadn't begun and so I could get a full refund. I then received a call stating that they had to deduct a $300 fee for transporting the impressions to the lab - which is in the building. Even if it was in Kathmandu, $300? 4) He gave me a book written in 1982, I think, so I could do the TMJ exercises. It contains chapters on Trigeminal Neuralgia, an extremely painful condition known as "the Suicide Disease." The treatment information is woefully out of date. That's appalling. 5) He said that I would receive a copy of the report and my 360 degree x-ray within a week and had me fill out a list of doctors and dentists who should receive copies. I received the x-ray pasted into a document - not a jpeg - which is pretty useless. After 2 weeks, I called to see where the report was. He's been busy. I received it. None of the folks who were supposed to get copies did, including my dentist. 6) At the bottom of page 2 of the report, in clinical language I didn't understood, was a brief comment about a tooth in the area where I'd had pain. The dentist I sent it to noticed it, and sent me for a root canal. Turns out that the tooth was the cause of the pain I'd experienced. It was now three weeks after he'd examined me. No call, nothing to alert me to the problem. The endodontist said it was infected and about to become very painful. He also said that the tooth was the cause of the pain I'd experienced. He did a 90 minute root canal and hoped he saved the tooth. 3 weeks matters. 7) Between the consult, x-ray and lab transport fee, I was charged about $1,000. They bill using medical codes, but don't take my insurance, which I knew. I asked if they could submit the x-ray to my dental insurance, using dental codes. They said that wasn't possible. I will never, ever believe that I needed that x-ray. 8) His exam findings were that I have TMJ. But I don't have any symptoms, so I see his test as equivalent to what they say about back pain and x-rays - how things look on an x-ray has nothing to do with how you feel. in sum, I would NEVER go back. I won't articulate my thoughts and feelings about my experience because I think the facts are sufficiently damning. read more

I thought I just wanted my front teeth straightened, but Dr. Gelb showed me what was happening structurally that was causing/affecting the teeth. My bite was completely off, causing not just chewing but airway problems and snoring. As we talked, I realized I had stopped using the right side of my mouth after previous gum surgery, but I hadn't really focused on it. So the first step was to fix the bite, which he did with a night appliance that looks weird but not only straightened my bite but also stopped my snoring. Better sleep quality has increased my energy and improved my breathing. (I had no idea I snored -- I thought my husband was exaggerating. The take-home sleep test they administered proved me wrong.) Once my bite was in the right place, it became clear that the crooked teeth in front were keeping my bite from closing. So now, after the initial bite work, I'm doing invisalign to straighten the front teeth, which I completely love. And in a couple of months, I'll not only have straight teeth, but they will function correctly!! All of this is also breaking bad habits I had of chewing, pushing, grinding, jutting -- all kinds of constant movement I hadn't been aware of that was moving my teeth every whichway. All along the way Dr. Gelb has listened and been really thorough in teaching what he's doing. I pushed back on upper and lower invisalign and he heard me and figured out how to do just the part I need most. He's probably not your guy if you just want to walk in and self-prescribe a quick solution (which I originally did), but if you have a little faith, he knows what he's talking about, he's looking at the architecture of the entire breathing and chewing mechanism, and in the end, everything he said has happened. I feel 100% better, sleep better, have more energy, breathe better, was able to stop taking an anti-depressant, and will soon have very pretty teeth again. He's not cheap, but this is a major health component that most people pay zero attention to, and I'm confident this is going to keep me in better health for the rest of my life. read more
