Recently, the Oxbow Western Timothy Hay I've been buying online has been *terrible*; the worst quality I've ever seen. I wonder if it's sitting around for longer than it should be in a hot warehouse or truck? The hay is also frequently unavailable randomly on Amazon; and, Amazon frequently can't ship this hay out for at least seven to ten days for some reason. Unsure why this is happening, but enough is enough. So now I'm Team Animal House (and, again, I'm so sorry it took me so long to make this decision). It seems locally-owned. There's currently three locations: Damariscotta (which has a self-service wash facility), Brunswick, and Westbrook. The Westbrook location is in a strip mall and has loads of parking. The store is pretty clean, and while it's predominantly focused on dogs and cats, there is alllllllllllll the way in the back lefthand corner a section for our rodent and bird friends. And... voila! A wall full of Oxbow Western Timothy Hay (other kinds available as well) in all sizes: 15 ounce, 40 ounce, 90 ounce. It's nice to be able to look at each bag in person to see what the color/consistency/quality of the hay is and doublecheck lot numbers against each other. I bought a 40 ounce and 90 ounce bag just in case one ended up being not good, and the OH SO LOVELY employee cashing me out asked me if I wanted to join their loyalty program which would, for this particular item, get me a complimentary bag of hay after my seventh purchase. Um... what? YES. I didn't see the litter that I use here (Carefresh, all natural) or the hay cubes (Kaytee Timothy Blend), so unfortunately I can't swap all my shopping here. But I would if/when it becomes an option! THANKS for saving the day, Animal House! My extremely picky and always very hungry rabbit appreciates the good and immediate hay!

So eventually, I stopped trying to socialize him at dog parks. Woof Play Eat opened and I figured "Well, might as well give it a shot." JC absolutely loved it! And he is so much better in his middle age. The business is a genius idea (note: I have not been yet to the competition in South Portland). There's a large indoor monitored dog park with an outdoor section as well. The anonymity of outdoor dog parks yields some terrible dog owners that can be dangerous. Since Woof Play Eat is an actual business with employees, and isn't free, it appears to attract a far more respectful clientele. Outside of the dog park is a dining area for both you and your dog, where you order food and drinks via QR code. The Pawstrami Paco was great, and massive. This business is a legit good restaurant in addition to dog park. The alcoholic drinks are pricey (think Old Port prices) but the margarita was well made. There is an attractive restaurant and bar area that does not allow dogs as well. You could easily visit solo just to eat and drink. JC had the time of his life at Woof Play Eat and we're already planning our next visit.

We're also convinced that he developed CPV shortly after visiting, likely from shared toys you'll find around the property. The park is mostly dirt and located in a vacant industrial area -- to speak frankly, it's sketchy, trashy and I'm tired of giving it chances.

And still small enough that for the most part you can see your pup wherever you sit. There is what kind of appears similar in design to a large bus stop- a plexiglass glass and wood "shack" to protect you from the elements with benches inside. Great for blocking sun, rain, and wind. 6 months a year there is running water. And even a tub for the dogs to climb in and cool down Another great thing about Valley St is it is awesome for elderly and disabled pet owners in that the park is flat and enclosed and full of friendly awesome dog owners. There are poop bags for you if you don't bring your own and now that it's November you should try to remember to bring water if your dog gets thirsty. I met my totally awesome dog walker Louise here. Less than 20 minutes later the squeaker and all the stuffing was torn out before my other two boys had their chance to play with it. Pretty disappointed the toy failed to live up to the hollow sales pitch, now I've got 3 unhappy pups wondering what why they no longer have a gift from my trip to Portland :(

Between the owners Terresa and Taylor who are just so so nice, fun and compassionate, to the rest of their staff they're all genuinely happy to see my boy Tucker and seem to enjoy what they do which is so rare. I'm never worried that the staff can't handle a situation with all the dogs in the yard which I've felt before with other doggie day cares. Taylor makes sure everyone outside with the dogs has a good calm energy, which when your working with a pack this size you need. I was worried too about the hot summer weather that it would make the turf too hot for the dogs but they do a great job flooding the turf with the hose so the dogs can cool off, they also have great frozen treats you can purchase for them to give your dog during the day. Tucker has never been happier with a daycare, nor more tired when he comes home, which to me and I'm sure most dog owners is the sign of a successful day. Thank you A1K9.

I purchased a Yorkshire Terrier from Pawsitively Pets in Scarborough Maine July 3, 2011. I had…read moretechnically bought him June 30, but wasn't allowed to take him home until the 3rd due to him needing his vaccinations and to be checked by their vet. When I finally brought him home I was so happy! About 16 hours later, I awoke covered in the poor puppy's feces and him non-responsive. I thought it was because he was hypoglycemic so I gave him some honey and thought nothing of it. He bounced back, was barking and jumping everywhere. I thought I fixed the problem and that would be the end of it. About 8 hours later, it happened again. I called the emergency vet, by this time is was the 4th of July and the regular vet was closed. I rushed him down to the emergency vet in scarborough, Maine Veterinary Referral Center. They took him out back right away. When the vet came to see me after what felt like forever, she told me they had to do "life saving procedures" on the table, and he had officially died and they brought him back. She asked me where I got him and so I told her. She told me that was the 2nd or 3rd yorkie she had seen in the last week and a half that suffered the same fate from that pet store. She said the puppy was unfit for sale, he had pneumonia, an upper respiratory infection, and was hypoglycemic. He needed to stay the night and be kept on an IV to keep his blood sugar balanced. That was the first 800 I spent in vet bills. I couldn't afford to keep him there anymore than a day, so at 8 in the morning on July 5, I picked him up, promising to bring him to a normal vet for a check up and further instructions. I did just that, however they suggested that he continue hospital care with an IV and it would cost me around 500 per day. Now, I had just spent 800 in vet bills that morning, and the day before that I had spent 1050 on the puppy itself. I was hurting financially. I told them about my situation and the vet pretty much wished me good luck and sent me on my way. They had given me a high fat soft food to help him gain weight (he weight a pound and 12 ounces) and it would help him keep his sugar where it needed to be. After the bleak outcome from the vet, I drove this poor defenseless little puppy back to the pet store and demanded they take it back. I was not going to let this poor little guy die on me, in my arms. I wasn't about to watch that. They refused. Stating that I needed to mail in the proper paperwork to the contract place and they would do something for me when I did that. That obviously didn't help me in the mean time, and the poor little guy would probably die waiting for the stupid paperwork to get where it had to go. I begged and pleaded. But, they did nothing, and I had to leave that store puppy in hand. I'm a young girl, I was 20 at the time, and I still lived at home with my grandparents. My grandmother was so furious that I had spent all of this money on this puppy, it was very ill, and they refused to do anything about it. After a very heated battle over the phone with the owner, Ryan Cheplic, they agreed to help me. I brought the puppy back in and they gave it a nebulizer treatment to help with its breathing. One of the employees there was going to school to become a veterinarian, so she agreed to take him for the night and feed him every 2 hours. He absolutely refused to eat for me, and I didn't think she was going to have much luck either. The next day, he was still alive. She kept him the next night as well and for the next week, I brought him in a couple of times a day for nebulizer treatments. When the contract place finally got my paperwork, they told me I could either give the puppy back and get a full refund, get a different puppy, or keep the puppy and they would reimburse me half of what I paid for him for vet bills. I chose reimbursement of half of the purchase price. I had grown so attached to him, the 4 days that he had to stay there, I visited 3 times a day and I was going to love this little guy until he died. When I finally got him back, the employee told me her trick to get him to eat; watering down the high-fat soft food so that it could be sucked up through a syringe. And force feeding him 2-3 syringes every 2 hours. So, for the next month and a half, that's what I did, along with Clavamox, a liquid antibiotic. That was only the first scare with Miles. Since then, I have spent $10,000 in vet bills for numerous visits. He has had to have IVs 4-5 times, and had many overnight stays at the ER. After a lot of heartache, and an anxiety filled year, at the beginning of April 2012, he was diagnosed with a port-systemic shunt on his liver. This type of shunt carries most of his blood around his liver, instead of being filtered through his liver. Because of this, his blood becomes toxic, and he cant keep food down, he paces until exhaustion, has seizures, and gets psychosis. We began treatment, which consists of 3 different medications, Lactulose,

One of ours is an older 35 lb dog that does not see well. She had at least two giant dogs running right at her. My husband had her leashed and walked away. I could not follow with the other dog because if I did, the horde would have rushed at us and my older dog would have been even more scared. They kept screaming at the dogs and the dogs did not listen at all. They just kept coming at us. I lost it on the women and instead of being nice and apologetic, they were rude and snotty. Told us to turn around and keep walking. They finally got the dogs loaded on the buses, and we could hear them talking rudely about us. If you don't want your dogs to get hurt, or handled by people that obviously have no control, you might want to skip this place. They really are unprofessional and need some training in how to handle dogs safely.
