My now financee & I went here because we wanted a vintage engagement ring. we made an appointment with Diane (not necessary but seemed a good idea during COVID), and we were not disappointed. Diane had us come into her booth (the shop is a smaller space inside a larger antique mall) and and briefly remove our masks for the camera (this is a jewelry shop, after all). In COVID times, precautions were in place, followed & reasonable (Masks, plastic screens at counter). Diane was very polite, professional & helpful. We did go to a few other jewelry stores in the western suburbs, all pretty standard. They all had a few vintage rings, but nowhere near the selection of The Gold Hatpin. We had plenty to look at and Diane was great at listening & educating us. This was helpful because my fiancee & I *thought* we knew what we wanted but there were a couple factors we hadn't considered & her input was very helpful. Along those same lines, she was not pushy in the least. Many other "basic" jewelry stores wanted to source rings from other places, construct a "vintage looking" ring, etc & we got the feeling that we were dealing with a used car salesman at times. Diane was none of that & truly a pleasure to work with. We can't recommend Diane and The Gold Hatpin enough. read more

I've never seen a shop as cute as this, it's literally a hidden gem. I found out about this boutique from purchasing an item from one of their online sources. I decided to come pick it up in person and I was so glad that I did. It was a little hard to find because they are with in another store, but the store employee was kind enough to direct me to them. The shop is very small, owned by two separate owners Diane and Lynn. They specialize in antique, vintage and estate jewelry both fine and costume. They have many great and unique pieces that will mesmerize you. Everyone who works there are nice. There are a couple reasons that kept them from getting a perfect 5 from me. One is that my debit card never works there. The first time I thought it was because I'm dropping $800 in a town that I've never been. So the second time, I called my bank right before I went in to make sure they knew where I was and I'm about to make a purchase. And it still did not work(I have chase, not sure if it's just me?) I don't mind using my credit card, but I prefer using my debit on things like this for some reason, and it was just a bit inconvenient. Secondly, when I purchased from their online source, I made an offer and was able to get $200 off of the original listing price. And I figured that they would accept offers in store too but they don't, which is kind of odd to me. Especially I bought like 4 pieces from them already. I'm a big fine jewelry collector so obviously I know a lot about jewelry. I have to say they are slightly overpriced (some pieces more than others). I do understand if something is very rare and hard to find a higher mark up would be fine. I just don't get the logic of accepting offers online but not to normal frequent customers, especially on highly marked up pieces. Also, I bought a ring there (from Diane's side) and the stone was loose in the setting. They charged me $15 to have it tightened. I know it's not much, but I don't think I should be responsible for that and it's not good business etiquette. Overall, my shopping experience has been great. read more

What a fine shop! I needed a replacement for my engagement ring -- it had been damaged in an accident. I figured i would do the legwork -- identify a few possibilities -- then bring my husband in for final approval. Working with Diane was a pleasure. The shop is small but well stocked. The inventory of options was large, varied, and well priced. My vintage ring is beautiful and one-of-a-kind. It needed resizing. Diane took care of that. My fiance and I wanted something really special for our engagement ring. We had 2 pieces of unworn, but special, jewelry from our grandmothers and were hoping to have something made that would put the two together as ambitious as it seemed. Llyn at the jewelry studio made it possible. She was absolutely incredible. We went into her shop with the two pieces and looked through her great inventory at things we liked (shapes, styles, cuts of stones). She put together a sketch out of all of our ideas. She got the opal from my fiance's grandmother's ring polished and perfected to look as good as new and created a beautiful art deco design for the setting. She even incorporated the Frank Lloyd Write designs (so special to oak park!) in some of the cut out work on the sides. She was in cheerful communication with us the whole time, always asking for opinions and sending new ideas and updates. In the end, she was able to create the most amazing ring, exactly what we wanted, and within our teacher budgets. We are going back to her to to a matching piece for my fiance's wedding band. Such a AMAZING shop if you are interested in vintage jewelry at very fair prices. Lynn made my engagement ring a dream come true. I bought a simple gold filigree ring from the gold hatpin and she completely transformed it by placing my family diamond in the center. I was worried because I wanted to retain the integrity of the original vintage ring (not look like some modern setting placed on a vintage ring) and wanted to make sure the diamond looked like it was meant to be there. Lynn listened to all my concerns and delivered a result better than I could have imagined (she has quite the eye for vintage jewelry and how to tastefully modify it)!!! Fantastic place to find antique jewelry. They have everything from fashion to high end, with prices for pretty much every budget. Got my engagement ring here. The shop assistant was really helpful, worked with us a little bit on the price. I was pretty confused the first time I tried to find this place- it as actually located INSIDE the antique store in a small side room. My only complaint is that it is so small that it gets cramped if there are more than 2-3 people in there at once. read more

This is really a great place for antique jewelry. A friend of ours got their engagement and wedding rings here and they were really nice, so nice that my then boyfriend who was said friend's best man (and holder of the rings) swiped the business card and had his Grandmother's ring fixed up here. That ring is now my wedding ring, and I still go to the Gold Hat Pin to get the settings tightened so the stones don't fall out (like I said it's an old ring) or if I am in the neighborhood and want to get the ring cleaned. I wanted to love this place but their selection wasn't as large as promised. Most of the rings were a pretty small size and the woman staffing the shop wasn't knowledgeable about resizing. She admitted she didn't know as much as the owner though, so I would recommend going when owners are there. Cute shop, friendly staff. I'm always looking for things with a history and this little hidden nook in a curiosity shop of beautiful well loved antique furniture, trinkets, and enough piles of old mysterious oriental rugs to play princess and the pea with never fails to please. When I arrive at the jewelry studio I feel like I'm in a magical gypsy caravan with a stockpile of treasures from faraway places. It feels a little bit like Old Town did in the 1960's. The memento I chose, or perhaps it chose me, was a Victorian rectangular fancy cut banded agate brooch set in gold vermeil that looked to me to be of Scottish origin. I felt the price was fair. My boyfriend and I came here to look at rings based on a recommendation, but unfortunately will not be returning. On their website it says "Contact us today to set up an appointment so that we can help you make the right choice for your special day." My boyfriend called on a Saturday afternoon to ask about an appointment for the next day. He was told they don't do appointments/their foot traffic is slow so we could just come in, and they would be open 12-5. On Sunday we showed up at 3:30pm to a woman closing up shop. She said they were closing early and apologized. From what she said, it sounded like she wasn't supposed to work that day/was just filling in. I understand last minute emergencies, but we were upset after driving 35min from the city to Oak Park, and were excited to ring shop, but instead had to turn around and drive home. At one point, the women told us if we called she could've told us they were closing early, and when we repeated to her that we called the day prior and were told the hours were 12-5 her response was "oh really?"... She also said they'd be open the next day, but as two people with full time jobs we aren't able to shop on a Monday from 11-6 when we live/work in the city. It's frustrating that we tried to make an appointment based on the recommendation from the website, but it ended up being a waste of our time and turned what should've been a special experience into a disappointment. I was really excited to check this place out, but we won't waste our time going back and will be shopping elsewhere. read more

Everything in this store is beautiful but incredibly over priced. If you'd like something good that's worth the price you're so much better going just about anywhere else. I especially like the Antique & Resale Shoppe on Harlem and Touhy. Diane, the owner of The Gold Hatpin is very stuck up and rude, her employee Lynn treats you like a common criminal even when you are spending nearly $1K. Not sure if its a racial issue (I'm middle eastern) but was very uncomfortable and this has been the same over the course of several visits and purchases. The last purchase I made was a gold ring, they did not know the karat or stone in the gold... only that it was Victorian English gold. I was surprised at how little they knew. Probably wont go back now that I've found better outlets for antique jewelry. read more
