Don remade my 36 year old wedding set and a 20 year old anniversary band, and they are perfect! We got my wedding set from him originally in 1990. I managed to lose both of those rings and a diamond anniversary band, and still have not found them. The replacement set is even better than the original! He worked to find the best center diamond (better quality than the original) and to find the best emeralds, which are very fragile and have to be purchased with more than is required since some get cracked during the setting process. I was referred by my in-laws. They had good experience with the previous owner, Sherman Tucker. The first time I came to Tucker was for resizing my engagement ring. I called, Don told me I could just stop by without making an appointment. Couple months later, I stopped by to check my wedding band without making an appointment. Don was not in the store at that time. So I waited at the door. When he saw me, he asked, "Who are you? Why you are here? Did you make appointment? You need to make an appointment." I apologized very politely and told him because last time when I called, I was told no need to make an appointment. But I'll do so next time. He said that's okay and let me in. He then showed me wedding bands and quoted me the prices. I told him I'll have to discuss with my fiancé and will let him know if I need it. I discussed with my in-laws, and also shopped around at other jewelry stores. I got quotes from others, and were lower than Don quoted me. In the meantime, my fiancé was thinking to melt down his two family old gold rings into a man's wedding band, or, just get a new white gold wedding band. We don't know which one is better/easier. So I called and made an appointment. I asked Don if he can match the price with the quote I got from other jewelry stores. He said, "Then just go to other jewelry store. I don't play that game. I don't know their stone quality. I don't play that game." Then I said, "Oh, okay, it's totally understandable." and asked him, "So back to my fiancé's wedding bands. We want to know which way is worth it. What is the price if he wants to get a new wedding band?" Don said, "You know what? I'm not the right jeweler for you. Go to other place." and kicked me out. I still said thank you and okay to him very politely before I left. I think it's reasonable customers have budget concern. And I wasn't keeping bargaining the price. I'm totally fine with that if he doesn't want to match the price. And I don't see any wrong when I asked him whether to get a new band or melt down old rings is better deal. I was really surprised he acted in such a rude way! I'm always being polite and saying "thank you" or "sorry". Purchasing diamonds is a lot of money. Jewelers should expect people to compare prices. I get that Don might be very proud of his diamonds qualities. But you should not treat your (potential) customers in this way. Remember when you step into Tucker, it's not you're picking the jeweler, it's he's picking customers. And you gotta be careful you might said something offend Don and he will kick you out right away. Don took over this business from the previous owner, Sherman Tucker. Don used to be Tucker's gemologist. A lot old customers came back is because their families had good experience with Sherman Tucker. Don already lost business from me and my family for sure. And we will not recommend this store to our friends. But he probably doesn't care. If Don keeps doing business in this way, trust me, he would lose more customers that he took over from Sherman Tucker and also new customers. -Update: Doesn't seem like the owner try hard to accommodate everyone, or try hard to do business. He didn't even ask me what my budget or offer to work on my budget. Not let me finish my words, he turned mad immediately. If it's only me had the bad experience. Well, then Don is definitely a racist and probably I look young so he thought he can take advantage of that and give me a hard time! Btw, he didn't do a good job resizing my ring. He measured my finger and said either size 5 or 5 1/2 is fine. I was indecisive. Then I decided to go with 5 1/2 in case finger swelling in the summer. It turned out still big on me, within in a week, I asked for a second resizing and how much he would charge. He said, "ITS YOUR DECISION TO MAKE IT 5 1/2, NOT MY PROBLEM. So I still have to charge you." I was like, alright, whatever. So I came by again, he took my measurement and we decided to size down to 4 3/4. He is very proactive on keeping you within your budget and is upfront on costs and doesn't bring out stones outside your budget (unlike another unnamed jeweler, where one of the stones they brought out to show my girlfriend was almost 2x what I stated as a budget... Lets just say "He went to Tucker" instead). He also was great at helping me decide which stone to get, as I was struggling to choose between two. He wasn't invasive or in any way trying to push me towards the more expensive stone, which I ended up going with anyway. If you give Don a call a few days in advance and give him an idea of what you want in terms of the four C's and budget, he will make sure he has a wide variety of stones and bands in-house. Don was able to accommodate my schedule when I was delayed multiple hours, and even stayed late on the Friday before a holiday weekend to ensure I could get the stone set and walk out the door with it. My sister was thrilled with the diamond earrings that my mother and I gave her as a gift. Don was wonderful at explaining diamond quality, things to look for and picked out the perfect pair in our price range. I highly recommend Don at Tucker if you want a professional who will listen, patiently explain and pick out the perfect item. He did not try to up sell, and I was confident that I received an amazing and fair price. As a little background, I had previously purchased a pair of diamond earrings at Macy's. The price was good (around $300 for a pair), and in the store the Macy's earring sparkled. Don't get me wrong, I like Macy's and think they have quality products, and I continue to shop there a lot. But, when I got home to look at the Macy's earrings, they looked grey and did not sparkle. It had to be the store lighting that brought out all the colors. I am writing this as a long time associate of the Tucker Company, from the 50's, when my family's jewelry store, Frank's Jewelry, was just being established and there was some hesitancy from many to deal with a Japanese American business; holdouts from anti Japanese sentiments from WWll. Sherman and Norm Tucker and their father always dealt with our family fairly, generously offering items for us to borrow to show customers on consignment to augment our selection, and always in a gracious manner. I've known the current owner, Don, since he started working for the Tuckers decades ago. The Tuckers would have never hired anyone who didn't share and represent their aesthetic, but more importantly, their ethics. He has great style, is a certified gemologist, and as a teacher, sharing information comes naturally to him. I have never once found him to be dismissive or classist, as willing to offer help with a small melee as a carat diamond, a perfect quirky sterling bauble as a bracelet of precious gems. I know for sure that Don would never play the race or sex card to discriminate against anyone. I can understand a clashing of personalities, or perhaps a misunderstanding in a transaction, where communications failed or were misinterpreted (I can't tell you how tired we were of customers trying to talk us down on prices because they "saw the same thing" for a fraction of the price; So many factors come into play when the intrinsic value of precious jewelry is involved that goes far beyond appearances) None of us can make every client happy, but that shouldn't leave us victims to unfounded claims. read more

Under the Tuckers, this was the go-to jeweler for several generations, a trusted place for custom and ready-made jewelry. I've continued to sporadically use it after ownership change, including for a job that required replacing one tiny missing stone in a pave diamond ring. Except that he wouldn't do the job without adding a coating to the ring so he could charge more, it seemed fine when I picked up the ring. However, on closer look, the replaced stone is significantly different from the others, dark, dull and unhappy. So my experience with Tucker and Don started a little over 2 years ago, when I decided to propose to my girlfriend. After scouring the city for a rose cut champagne diamond, I ended up at Tucker. As I asked the question of a former employee in the front, a booming voice came from inside, saying "This man has been searching all over town for this diamond!". From that point on, I knew I had found my jeweler. I don't buy expensive jewelry often, but Don made the engagement ring purchase, and subsequent wedding ring purchases, unbelievably easy. Champagne diamonds are not expensive ones, but you couldn't tell the way Don treated me. On a handshake, he went to work crafting my fiance's engagement ring and he has been a man of his word since. Once again, Don astounded my fiancé and me. I could not be more satisfied. I am a repeat customer and will continue to work with only Don for all my custom jewelry needs. I found Tucker Company through a google search for wholesale diamonds in Chicago and after crosschecking the company on Yelp (because that's what we all do before going anywhere and spending a dime) I decided to check them out. I called Don up and he right away was able to get me an appointment for the next day to look at some stones for my soon to be wife's engagement ring. He asked me over the phone what I was looking for and what price range I wanted to stick to, this saved a lot of time so we were able to get straight down to business when I came in the next day. On our way there in the car I told my sweetie not to go falling in love because most of the guys on jewelers row try to up-sell or insult you by showing you a diamond that you can get for thousands of dollars less else where. We had been on jewelers row a few months back so we kind of knew what to expect...store front wise and value wise. Don's place is small but has a lot more to offer than whats in the counters. We were greeted and taken back to Dons office....way more comfortable than looking at diamonds on the showroom like some of those other places down the block. Don was very personable, made us feel like we were like some of his friends. He brought out 4 different stones that were comparable to what I was looking for. When I saw the diamonds I thought for sure he was trying to up-sell me, they were so beautiful and much, much bigger and better than any of the other stones we had seen elsewhere. Much to my surprise they were all in my price range, which made me the happiest gal around after seeing my sweeties eyes light up. She was able to put the stones in a setting to try the different stones out on her finger, through out the process Don never once made us feel rushed, even if she wanted to try them on a few different times, check them out in different lighting and then try the last one on again. Ultimately we went with a 2.52 cushion cut in a platinum setting, and we were able to pick it up that very day! Don never made me feel pressured to buy anything, after getting my sweeties decision it ultimately came down to me, and Don had no problem with me taking a coffee break at the near by Starbucks to think it over. I proposed about a month later in August 2013 and my sweetie still can't stop looking at her ring. She comments all the time on how it is the perfect stone for her. I've gotten so many compliments, but at the end of the day, its how she feels about it and I couldn't be happier that I found Don and Tucker Company.
