I was having trouble finding a vintage Art Deco ring to propose to my girlfriend and a friend recommended Jon at The Goldsmith. I had my ring custom made at another jeweler with a very specific design. When I received it back, 2 weeks before the surprise proposal, it was completely UNACCEPTABLE craftsmanship. I don't bother getting any of my jewelry from big name stores anymore after realizing how overpriced other places can be. This is a small family business that listens to your needs. Before I proposed, I did months of research on diamonds. Come to find out, commercial jewelry stores such as Jared's or Robins Brothers mark up the price by more than 200%. Why get ripped off? You can get the same spec. diamond for much less by purchasing from honest jewelers. Jonathan at The Goldsmith is the man to speak to when you're in need of any jewelry! I can confidently say I'll be a customer for life. Did my homework and at the time I was in the market for an engagement ring, I only wanted a GIA certified diamond. If you're about to propose, learn your 4 C's, any change in specs will fluctuate the price by hundreds, maybe even thousands. Once I found the specs I was comfortable with, Jonathan walked me thru the shopping process and made it FUN! I told him I wanted a GIA certified 1 carat round cut with excellent cut/polish/symmetry, no fluorescence, G color or higher grade, VVS2 clarity. Jonathan found me exactly that BUT I ended up with a 1.09 carat! EVEN BETTER. Few of the things I learned after all my research, color grade via GIA certification, there'S no scientific way it is determined, rather 6 gemologists must be in agreement with the color grade. Because of that, I did a side by side comparison of different color grades; example: D next to E, D next to F, D next to G, D next to H. When I got to H, my eyes could clearly see the faint hue of yellow. I determined I was comfortable with G. Another cool thing I learned was that clarity grade is not always what it seems. Clarity grade is ranked from: IF, VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, S1, S2. IF (internally flawless) literally has no inclusions/blemishes under magnification. I couldn't dish out the funds for IF but I got picky with the type of inclusions I was ok with. All their names are exactly what they sound like; clouds look like clouds, needles are like a line, pinpoints are dots. I was only ok with pinpoints. BUT GUESS WHAT? GIA certification does NOT specify the color of the inclusions. Your pinpoint may be black (carbon), which is unsightly under magnification, or it may be white (extremely difficult to spot even under magnification). Jonathan was able to confirm that the diamond I was interested in, having 4 pinpoints, were all white pinpoints!!! So, my diamond looks IF, for the price of VVS2. Thanks Jonathan for dealing with my OCD. Of note: when I was shopping around, I saw VVS1 diamonds with more inclusions than the VVS2 I got. It pays to shop around! For me, spending big money on a rock was a big deal. What's to determine the value of a rock, if at the end of the day, it's merely a material possession? Jonathan was patient with my process, extremely helpful and NEVER did I feel pressured to purchase. He's like the ultimate jeweler anyone could wish for; the jeweler that becomes the jeweler homie! HIGHLIGHTS: Jonathan is a licensed appraiser and can appraise the jewelry you purchase, saving you time and money. Appraisal certificates are needed for insurance purposes. I'm a risk taker, so my jewelry is not insured but I have the papers for if I wanted to insure. My appraisal value was 61% more than my purchase price!!! I'm sure Jonathan can work the same wonders for you too. Matter fact, I've sent my eldest sister's boyfriend to Jonathan, and my now future-bro-in-law told me "Jonathan saved me over $5k for the exact same ring Robin's Brothers would've sold me for wayyyy more." With The Goldsmith, you get the BEST service for life. Lifetime service: cleanings, resizing, and my favorite...DIPPING. My fiance's ring went from white gold to rose gold, and we can switch colors whenever we want for FREE. Can't do that if you bought from a commercial jewelry store. They also have the best upgrade policy. This is another thing I did a lot of research on. Commercial jewelry stores have an upgrade policy where you can only upgrade if you're upgrading for a stone 50% more in value. That's a definite handicap. At the Goldsmith, you can upgrade to a stone of more value, simply pay the difference. Recently just picked up wedding bands; I got a 24 karat band and my fiance Linda got a rose gold petite twist with tiny diamonds all over the top. We showed him images of how we wanted the rings and they were made even better than we expected. For my wedding band, Jonathan encouraged me to go 18 karat, as 24 karat gold is soft and prone to scratches. I told him I wanted to stay true to the lyrics of Bruno Mars' 24karat Magic LOL He gladly abided and provided me with the best looking ring. Lastly, Jonathan also gave me a Tungsten version of my 24 karat ring. I'll wear the Tungsten to work, and the real deal on occasions.
