Attended the 25th Anniversary of the Frank Lloyd Wright "Gordon House" at its current location. It was built in 1963, (a few years after Frank Lloyd Wright's death) for Conrad and Evelyn Gordon of Wilsonville, OR. The House was saved from being torn down in 2001 by being deconstructed. Then moved 40 miles over to Silverton. We were able to tour the yard, and the 1st and second floors. Each space was unique with angular wood work, colored concrete and light pouring in through wide panes of glass. All typical of FLW architecture, which he referred to as "Usonian". Simple, beautiful and functional. There were cupcakes, coloring activities and a pianist along with specialists answering questions throughout the home. My favorite part was the red kitchen and skylight. Afterwards we went over to the Oregon Garden right next door. It was two great properties to explore on a beautiful day. Maybe I'm spoiled since I grew up with Fallingwater in my backyard (not literally), but this house just didn't do it for me. We didn't get to go in as tickets were sold out for the day when we got there so we walked around the grounds and looked at it. It had some cool features and I'm sure if we had a tour guide explaining it all, it may have been more interesting. You may need to buy tickets in advance for this one. We tried just stopping in and were unsuccessful at securing a spot on the tour. read more

Frank Lloyd Wright. If you know the name and you haven't been in New York City to the Guggenheim Museum or to the outskirts of Chicago or Pennsylvania then this is really the only place around that one can see a truly amazing piece of architecture. That is simply all there is. This house is the one and only example here in Oregon. The house is known as the Gordon House because of the original owners of it. This location is also not it's original location. The descendants of the family decided to do something else with the land the structure was on so in stepped the foundation associated with Frank Lloyd Wright and they relocated the house to Silverton. From the website "The Gordon House, the only building in Oregon designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, offers guided tours of the interior of the house. The tours are conducted by knowledgeable and entertaining docents who will cover the theories and practices of Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture, the story of how an Oregon farm family commissioned Mr. Wright to design their new home, the near destruction of the home in 2000 and the rescue, dismantling, moving and reconstruction of the house in Historic Silverton next door to The Oregon Garden." The tours are $15 and they even offer overnight stays. The Gordon House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright at the tail end of his career and built after his death. It's the only Frank Lloyd Wright home in the Pacific Northwest that is open to public touring by appointment. How the Gordon House came to live in Silverton, Oregon is a bit of a story, although oddly it is not actually far from its original home (about 30 miles away.) Its a great story of preservation in the face of a shortsighted attempt by new owners to demolish this original Usonian home. There are only three Frank Lloyd Wright homes in the Pacific Northwest, and the others are privately owned, so being able to visit this house is a unique opportunity. We appreciated the intimate personalized tour. We were able to arrange ours a day ahead of when we were going to be in the area, and our call was returned within the hour. The tour cost $10 a person, a bargain. The tour guides are volunteers, mainly retired, passionate architecture buffs, but clearly they do this out of love for FLW and the house. The guide we had was very knowledgeable and passionate about the building and its legacy. The Gordon House is remarkably well preserved for a home that needed to be moved in 4 pieces across Oregon and reassembled in Silverton. It's a must see for any Frank Lloyd Wright fan or architecture buff. read more

I'm a big fan of Frank Lloyd Wright, so I was excited about visiting the Gordon House. The only thing that would have made the visit better is if the house had remained in Wilsonville, since Wright's houses are designed to suit their surroundings. However, once you learn the reason for the relocation, you will understand that we are lucky that this house is still on this earth. I've seen other Frank Lloyd Wright homes and they are all unique, but they are all an extension of nature. Wright is a perfectionist almost to a fault, but his designs are truly remarkable. You will learn that he is not someone who was very willing to compromise his designs, no matter who he was building a house for. Our docent was wonderful. read more

Visiting a friend in Portland, she suggested a day trip to the gardens and on it, what luck, the only FLW home in Oregon and because it was FLW's birthday, admission was free! We were even served cookies and cake. The excellent docent made me feel like I knew FLW personally and when friend and I were sitting on a sofa, she laughed and said, FLW would be so happy to see you two sitting on his sofa, just as he intended. I had a lot of questions for docent, and she answered them all with smiling eyes and good info. Love this place, just another FLW masterpiece made even better thanks to our tour guide. Ok, this was a bummer , in so many ways. i would not recommend it. Biggest problem is that the people who are paid to work there are lazy. According to the website, it's open from 12-4, and guided tours are offered at noon, 1 and 2 , with price of admission. We were a group of 4 adults - one of whom was a retired architect. We had called ahead to make sure they would be open. When we got to the house, a girl named Mairie came to the door of the house, and said, "no, you can't go thru it, only open for school tours . " I said, "No one told us that when I called ahead She just smiled and said, "You can look thru the windows", and she shut the door as we stood there! We walked around it, which took 5 minutes. It was much smaller than we expected. Then 2 more people pulled up in the parking lot, so now we are a group of 6 people. We knocked on door again. Mairie came to the door,.... And so did another woman who was working there. TWO women were present in the office of this place, and neither one could show us around ? That was 6 admissions that were turned away! I asked the 2nd woman , "When is the next school tour? We could come back tomorrow-- our friend is a retired architect and really wanted to see this . " Her answer was "The next school tour is not until Saturday. " Okay, this was a Thursday afternoon, and the next school tour was not until Saturday? 48 hours from now? and they were completely not doing anything until Saturday?? New levels of Lazy. I asked her , "If the next school tour is not until Saturday, what's going on here for 2 days? " She had no answer. She simply shut the door in our face. Secondly, the house wasn't very big, and was not particularly interesting. There was no landscaping. There were no plaques or any explanation of anything at the house. There were 2 cars in the car port ,belonging to the 2 women who were "working there", but too busy to do anything . There was no notice on the website, that the house would be closed. Our group of 4 and the other group of 2 were all in agreement, that the house should be open for tours. On the other hand, we all agreed that we should let the public know, the house is not anything worth seeing , and the people working there should be fired for not doing their job. They need from Thurs thru Saturday to prepare.... for a school tour..... which is the only thing that their job is about ? Skip this one. A waste of time, and these women were rude. read more

We did this tour yesterday, the guide/speaker was great! He was knowledgeable and entertaining. Both my husband and I are fans of the architecture, but I learned so much more here. Frank Lloyd Wright had a reason for every detail and it is done to perfection. read more

The tour guide was fantastic, great sense of humor and extremely knowlegable. The hour long tour, $15/pp, just flew by. The house itself is small, but the details are astounding (you'll have to take the tour to find out what those are). We learned a lot about FLW's vision of the Usonian home and was glad to see such an example preserved here. Tour began downstairs in the main room, went through the kitchen and "workspace", then upstairs to the bedrooms and cantilever balcony. I have toured the Gordon House three times now and always enjoyed the experience. The commenter who was upset about not being able to get a tour at the last minute and then proceeded to slam a volunteer (those "clerks" are not paid employees) doesn't seem to have much of an understanding of how small projects of passion are run. The Gordon House is not a very profitable destination at this point. The people who love it do what they can to get donations and lease out the space for events so they can keep the place running. $10 is indeed a steal for the scheduled guided tours. Make sure to call at least a day in advance to see what tour times are available. They typically run from noon-3pm, but if there is an event the tours can't be conducted. It's a lovely and unique home with an amazing story, and currently the only way for Oregonians to experience Wright's architecture in person without hopping a plane. read more

Make sure you make a reservation as the house is open only by guided tours. The only Frank Lloyd Wright designed building in the State of Oregon. It was built nearby and moved to The Oregon Garden to save it from being demolished. Excellent tour guide provided so much information about the house. I recommend the tour. read more

I went to the Gordon house on a road trip from LA to Portland, and if you get a chance, go take a tour. Might as well include the Oregon Gardens (the property the house is located on) and it's an easy day trip from Portland too. I can't say too much about the Frank Lloyd Wright house, because I got there after closing on Sunday, so obviously I missed the tour. I will have to go back, even though it is a far drive from Portland. I was most impressed that there was a Wright House in Oregon, especially since I am flying across the country in a few weeks to see Falling Water outside of Pittsburgh. I did peek in the windows and it looked like quite a house. There is a nice story associated with the house, and I hope to have a chance to take the tour. read more

If you're in any way interested in architecture as art, you have to see the Gordon house. The tour was on point, and we got to see almost the entire house (the basement is not tour-friendly). As far as I understand this is the only Frank Lloyd Wright house in Oregon, and is the only publicly viewable one in the Northwest. Definitely worth going out of your way to see. read more

we went last Saturday, $5 a person for a self-guided tour. parking was a mess, due to some bicyclist event. but the house is situated next to parking lots, so the walk isn't too bad, unless it's 90+ degrees as it was when we visited. House is just over 2000 square feet, and divided into two levels. the upper level has two bedrooms, and two balconies. downstairs is two more "wing" rooms and one grand living room. the place is very geometric in design, with tons of light absorbing the entire house. upstairs it's kinda of squished, with low headroom. but the kitchen and living room have super high ceilings. I guess they do weddings here, and I highly suggest this location for such an event. the story of the house is amazing, and is documented well throughout the house with museum quality readables/facts/stories. read more
